[i: thief at the hospital]

[Bucky has used the last of what Steve brought him on the night he was pulled from underneath the girder and patched up, but the wound still isn't completely healed and he doesn't want to risk it getting infected from substandard care. The bastardised serum he has might help keep infection at bay, but he's still human and he knows better than to risk it.

So clearly the best thing to do is head on over to the hospital, right?

Anyone passing by the hospital on a few days throughout the month might catch sight of a man subtly climbing in through one of the upper windows, and then climbing out again a few minutes later with his hoodie noticeably more full as if he's been pilfering supplies... mostly because that's exactly what he's doing.]

[ii: a stitch in time]

[Following the hospital raids, Bucky can be found out in the ruins tending to himself.

He has his shirt off, meaning that his metal arm is exposed to view for once, and is dealing with a nasty looking gut wound. It's already been stitched up, he's not in danger of keeling over any more, but he's cleaning out the dried blood and wrapping with fresh bandages.]

[iii: kiss and tell]

[After the disaster with Obi-Wan, Bucky has been keeping a very close watch out for those stupid little lights, determined not to get himself trapped under someone else's influence again. But they're more numerous than he'd like and sometimes one doesn't get seen until it's just a bit too late...

A warning to anyone getting themselves caught with Bucky in the kiss and tell, he may not react well and it could lead to fighting rather than kissing.]

[iv: songs from the old days]

[Bucky doesn't have much of a solid base, more a few bolt holes that he uses in a random pattern to keep him from being easy to track down, and that means that he doesn't have much in the way of possessions. It has to be easy to carry and flee with at a moment's notice, after all. But he has one or two indulgences that he's picked up on a whim, driven by half remembered days from before the Soldier.

He has a kite that he can sometimes be seen perched on a rooftop flying in the breeze, looking unaccountably peaceful. He also now has a record player. He found it in a little curiosity shop, a proper old one with some vinyls to go with it. He doesn't play the music too loudly, but anyone passing by some of the abandoned buildings or ruins might hear the quiet strains of the Andrews Sisters.]

[Bucky can also be found at nights having nightmares, skulking around at the gun range watching others play, or generally observing the world around him. [ Well working in the hospital for late night shifts is something Shigeru has gotten used to. What he's not used to is seeing someone pilfering supplies from the medicine closets. Shigeru might rush over and grab the other's arm, but its a brief hold, before he pulls away.

His phone comes out immediately as he types something. ]

Do you need medical assistance?! [ Or did someone he knows need it?! He looks pretty worried regardless. ]

[If Shigeru tries to grab Bucky's arm, however briefly, he'll find that Bucky dodges away on instinct. It's hard not to lash out, threat buzzing at the base of his skull, but he's getting better at that now.]

No.

[The slight bloodstain on his top probably says he's lying, but his expression is completely free of pain.]

Back off, I have what I need and this doesn't need to be an issue.

[ Shigeru might flinch and move away slightly before typing up something. ]

I'm a doctor here. I can help you if you need it. Just tell me what's wrong. I promise I won't tell anyone, if that's what you're worried about?

[ Honestly he wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't push the issue, but Bucky seems pretty steadfast in his decision for the moment. The bloodstain only fuels Shigeru's worry even more, however. ]

My powers let me heal things quickly, so whatever the issue is, I could try to fix it.

[It's not a very charitable thought, but Bucky can't help wondering how effective a doctor who can't talk to his patients could be.]

I said back off.

[The mention of powers only has him tensing further. He doesn't like doctors as it is, but add in powers that he doesn't understand and it gets a hell of a lot worse.]

[ AH. well, that does make him stop. Not that he'd ever force himself or his powers on anyone. Shigeru knows what it's like to be afraid of something unknown to him. So he just nods and holds out his phone for the man to read. ]

I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable. But...if you need anymore supplies I can get them for you.

It would be bad if someone found you in here like this. At least...I work here and they won't be too suspicious.

[ Because the security guards here probably wouldn't take for someone ransacking and stealing hospital supplies. ]

Why the hell would you offer that?

[That just makes him seem ten times more suspicious. What kind of doctor walks in on a thief and, instead of reporting them, actively offers to steal things for them to make it easier?]

[ he's not condoning what Bucky is doing, not at all, in fact he's offering so that the other will stop hopefully. Stealing medications is never right, of course, and if their supplies are off by a great enough margin they might not have enough to treat people when something bad really does happen. ]

Because I can see that you or someone else you know is injured. It's only natural to give the proper medications, and I'm worried that you might end up taking the wrong kind for whatever it is you need those for.

And...I was hoping that you might not...break into the hospital like this again. If you have a doctor like myself helping you I can make it easier on you to get what you need. If you don't have the money to pay for it either I can supplement you and perhaps you could pay me back in some other way? I just...don't want you to keep stealing and taking these medications because the hospital only has a certain amount at any given time. If some great disaster were to happen...we might not have enough medication for other people.

[ He pauses to let the other read what he's writing. Though he looks back at Bucky with a hopeful expression. He hopes that the other will listen to what he's saying and might give him a chance with this?! ]

[It's quite strange having a conversation that has to pause each time for someone to write a reply, but it gives him time to process things and not react quite so vehemently when he might have done if this were a spoken conversation.

This stranger, this doctor, he seems so earnest and trying to do the right thing. Bucky doesn't trust him even a little bit, but that doesn't mean that he's not what he seems, just that Bucky doesn't trust doctors in general.]

If you take them for me, you're still depriving the hospital of the same amount of medication as if you just let me take them.

[ He pauses and tilts his head at the response. ]

True. But with me having direct knowledge and overseeing how much has been taken I can put in orders and replenish the hospital's supplies quickly and more efficiently.

[ Whereas having them stolen and not having anyone know would be detrimental in the long run. Shigeru acting as the middle man will decrease these risks that would otherwise go unnoticed. ]

And I have eidetic memory so I definitely won't ever forget the count or to put in the orders for more! [ And here he'll just give Bucky a smile and a thumbs up. Shigeru...please. ]

[That does actually have some logical sense behind it, though the thumbs up and the smile just makes him... stare. He doesn't know whether this is actually a doctor trying to be kind, or something leading him on for reasons that he doesn't know yet.]

Alright.

[He'll test him on this once. If Shigeru doesn't come back, or tries to bring security, Bucky can handle it.]

Morphine, low grade, antiseptic wipes, bandages.

[ Listen here, Bucky, Shigeru is just trying to make the situation a bit less tense. Don't judge him and his methods!!

Shigeru does nod however, his expression serious, as he turns and goes to get said supplies. After several minutes he'll return with the required items. He'll hand them over to Bucky with a small smile. ]

[ He's kinda worried about leaving the other to his own devices like this still but...there's really no other choice, is there? ]

I can come to you where ever you want to meet and examine you. I don't want an infection to settle in, but since I haven't seen the wounds personally I can't say for certain how well the healing process is going. [ Which is his main concern because septicemia is a very dangerous, life threatening, condition to get. ]

[In those few minutes when he's left alone, Bucky nearly just bolts out of the window. It would be the sensible thing to do, he could come back later when this guy is out of the way and do what he intended to do, especially because he might very well be coming back with security.

But he's somehow still there when Shigeru returns, with medicine and not with security, so that makes him go up in Bucky's estimation a little bit. He wants to take the medicine with a quick snatch and retreat like a feral animal, but he has more control over himself than that and so he just takes it in one gloved hand and slips it into the large pocket at the front of his hoodie.]

I don't like doctors.

[This time it's almost an apology as well as a refusal. He gets a doctor wanting to do their job, but he has too many bad memories of being under someone else's medical control.]

I don't think it's infected, it's just taking a while to heal.

[ Shigeru understands it and respects it too. But he'll always worry as a doctor and of course as someone with a rather big heart. But he shakes his head and then turns around and leaves the room for another second or two. He'll come back with an electronic thermometer and hand that over to Bucky as well. He hands it over with a smile regardless. He's dealt with patients like this before and he can honestly say he's not offended by it. People have different limits and that's fine too. ]

It's okay! I understand. I want you to take this as well. Just monitor your temperature and if it ever gets above 102 you should really come see me or someone else at the hospital. I have my own private clinic if that's more...comfortable for you? But if it's taking a long time to heal there's a higher risk for infection. So just as a precaution I'll give you this as well.

[ For now that's all Shigeru can do for Bucky without him feeling uncomfortable or being pushy. ]

[He's wrong, it's already infected. It's his own fault, he tends not to consider that sort of thing because he has the bastardised super soldier serum to protect him. But sometimes it's easy to forget that the serum doesn't make him inhuman, it just makes him hardier, it doesn't mean he's immune.

He frowns and takes the thermometer, popping it in his mouth there and then. If he can show this doctor that everything is okay, then maybe he'll back off without complaint.]

How long do I have to hold it in for?

[Whatever the answer, the reading is easily visible as 105 when it settles down.]

[ Shigeru isn't even paying attention to Bucky's question when he sees that number on the read out. Oh my god?! 105 how are you alive right now?! He looks so concerned that he takes the thermometer back to make sure it's not broken. He doesn't type anything for a minute or two, still processing this whole mess.

Bucky why. ]

You definitely have an infection. I need to give you some antibiotics too, just to get the fever down. I'm worried if we leave it...it could have negative effects on the other parts of your body.

[The serum is keeping him going despite the fever, to the point where he's almost able to ignore it (or pretend that he is), meaning he looks sceptical at the diagnosis.]

I don't feel like I have a fever, I just need the bandages and things.

[ Shigeru will shake his head rather vehemently in protest. ]

Your fever is at 105! That's...really not good. I don't want to let you leave without giving you a course of antibiotics. It won't do anything bad to you so just take them with you, okay?

[ He's sort of giving Bucky this...worried but also rather uncompromising look now. ]

[He really doesn't trust any drugs that he's being given, he'd just throw them away rather than take them, so he shakes his head.]

I can drain the infection later.

[If there even is one, he doesn't know how much he trusts Shigeru on that.]

[ Shigeru gives him a stern look as if he's not willing to back down from this. ]

I can't as a doctor let you leave without taking them. Especially now that I've seen to you. It would be held against me if I did that.

[ So he offers them again and this time a bit more...insistent. ]

I thought you said you weren't gonna force any treatment on me.

[He glares at the tablets he's being offered and then up to Shigeru.]

Nobody will know you've seen me, why would it be held against you?

That was when I didn't think your condition this serious. Even if you're...not in pain or don't feel anything, 105 degree fever is not something to take lightly. You could die going on like this, and I don't want to alarm you, but leaving you like this...

It just doesn't sit well with me as a person and a doctor I'm afraid.

[ Of course 105 degree fever would have killed any normal human being, which Shigeru knows Bucky is not, but even so...inhuman beings have their limits too. ]

[He takes a step back towards the window he came in through, frowning fiercely at Shigeru.]

I'm not going to let you force any kind of treatment on me, you can go to hell.

[ Shigeru will fumble with his phone and the pills as he moves a step closer. He'll shake his head holding up his phone after he's quickly typed something. ]

I'm not forcing you because I want to! I'm...really worried about your health.

[ He really, truly, is because this sort of thing can escalate rather quickly. Given how long Bucky has probably let this sit it's no wonder that his temperature is that high. ]

I'm sorry if I...offended you or made you angry. I'm just trying to do what's best.

What's best is letting me handle this myself. I know what I'm doing.

[He doesn't, particularly, but he also knows he's pretty damn hard to kill and he doesn't think an infection is going to polish him off.]

I'm-- thank you for what you've given me so far, but that has to be it, you have to back off now.
