[ When Steve steps out onto the roof, the world dissolves. Every structure, light or cloud fades away to reveal nothing but stars. Stars that stretched out far into the horizon, galaxies and planets, flickering colour lights both far and close enough to touch. In fact, Steve can touch it, even cup the darkness into his hands. Loki lets Steve step out into the vastness of space, every beautiful light within distance, to hold, to catch, to feel the light trickle down his shoulders like stardust. Then he steps out from behind him with a quiet murmur. ]
How does it feel?
[ There is some trepidation. Like he might have miscalculated along the way. ]
[ The message comes unexpectedly, but it doesn't seem pensive or foreboding, and Steve goes up to the roof without any sense of alarm. After Loki apparently visited Tony, things have calmed down. Whatever answers the god found at the lab have at least started to soothe him. Steve is just happy to have a visit.
When he reaches the roof, he moves toward the lawn chairs that he and Bucky have sitting up next to the exhaust system and air conditioning unit, but those vanish before he can reach them. The world vanishes, fading like Tempera washed out with water, melting into a black background. And then around him he sees lights come alive, pin pricks and spheres that flicker and shimmer in the dark. Holding his breath, he reaches out to scoop one up, cradling his catch in the pool of shadows.
Loki's voice makes him jump. He almost forgot he had come up to meet him, but when he turns his head quickly toward him, his eyes are wide and his lets his breath go. ]
It's incredible.
[ Steve returns the star to its place in the vacuum that somehow lets him breathe and takes a few steps back, closing the distance between him and the god. His smile is still full of confused wonder. ]
[ Loki lets that slide. Nobody really knows what he can do. They only care if what he can do hurts others. His skills aren't notable, after all. Lights flicker through his hair as the stars turn. ]
No one does.
[ Except the Queen of Asgard, who taught Loki what he knew. ]
I thought you might enjoy the appeal of catching stars.
[ Steve doesn't even think about how what he says might suggest he hasn't taken the chance to appreciate Loki's magic before. It's true, he hasn't really considered what Loki can do, but at the moment he is caught up in the brilliance of stars playing around them. The dancing lights that seem alive as he moves through darkness to brush his hand through Loki's hair, chasing bits of stardust that clings to him. ]
Do you do things like this all the time?
[ Maybe that's why Loki said he wanted all the stars. A single throne can't possibly compare to being able to move star systems like this, even if it is an illusion. Steve curls his fingers around the back of Loki's neck and pulls him forward, offering a kiss. ]
[ Loki purrs, curling his arms around Steve's neck in a loose but slightly possessive hold, his fingers casually splayed over his skin. His body hums, pleased that his little surprise has garnered such a positive reaction of awe and wonder. It is rare, after all and Loki doesn't display his powers for just anyone. Loki loved his magic. It was the only part of himself that he is willing to nurture. Everything else is obsolete. ]
No. Of course not. Who would see the value of this?
[ Steve doesn't think too deeply about magic most of the time. He doesn't completely understand what Loki says, that no one else would see the value in Loki's ability, especially when he's standing in the middle of an ocean of stars. Who wouldn't be impressed by something like that? Instead of answering Loki's words with another statement of his own, Steve responds with a kiss. It's a sudden decision, deep and sensual with his fingers winding in Loki's hair. If nothing he says will convince Loki that he's happy with his magic, then Steve can demonstrate it. ]
I would.
[ Because there's nothing else he can guarantee, but at least he can say that. ]
[ He chases after those kisses, deepening his own want, a hoarse pleased sound that goes straight to the knees. Loki does not soften easily. He is sharp angles and cut-throat words. He has learned the art of restraint. Anger no longer dictates his actions though it lingers under his skin. There is always a guard up in Loki's eyes, a tightness in his lips. But for Steve, those edges smooth over. Steve isn't the only person who is awed. ]
Sometimes I cannot believe you are happy with me.
[ He rests his hand over Steve's heart, their foundation. ]
[ Steve answers Loki's pleased noises with more kisses, pushing eagerly forward so he can claim him with possessive nips and questing hands seeking to touch and hold the fleeting image of Loki finding happiness with him. He knows how difficult it is. When they stop and Loki presses his hand against Steve's chest, he can feel his heart beating quicker than normal. As if Loki's palm against him draws that knowledge out. ]
Of course I'm happy with you. You make incredible things come to life. All of this is because of you.
[ He doesn't quite understand how Loki couldn't see how amazing he is. Distantly, Steve does know the logic, but when he's standing there in what appears to be a pocket of nothing but lights and wonder, that is hard to remember. All he sees is the brilliance of it all reflected in the deep green of Loki's eyes. ]
[ At that, Loki stills, his eyes going wide. He stares at Steve, disbelieving because no one is ever happy because of him. It is unheard of and Loki finds all his careful words and defenses slowly slip away. He blinks starlight from his eyes. ]
Because of me?
[ His voice cracks and Loki curses his weakness, but finds he cannot hold it back. ]
[ Loki looks at him like he's said something impossible. Steve doesn't get it. He smiles, soft and bemused, and runs his fingers up the inside of Loki's arm. ]
No one has ever done something like this for me. It might be easy for you, but I've never gotten to touch a star before. You took the time to give me something special, Loki, and I can't repay you properly, but I'm grateful.
[ He raises his hand to cup Loki's cheek and wipe away the scattered lights from his eyes. ]
[ Loki does not blink before he tilts his head to kiss Steve's palm in thanks, brushing his lips fondly over his skin, curling his own fingers around Steve's hand. The smile that blooms is tentative, weak around the edges, like he hasn't done it enough because it's real and full of tentative hope. ]
[ Steve doesn't expect the kiss. Somehow, even when he's perfectly comfortable with Loki and their relationship, he doesn't always expect the kisses and affection. After all, it is Loki, and expecting affection is something like expecting affection from a cat. He almost flushes at the light brush against his palm, eyes widening as he watches Loki hold his hand and smile with the almost unsteady fondness. They are having a nice moment and he really doesn't need to stir up stardust, but Steve moves forward quickly, pulling Loki in by arm he has hold of, and kisses him, lips closing over the cautious smile, swallowing his words with a rough passion and a purr in his throat. ]
[ It takes him by surprise, but it is a surprise Loki happily melts into with a pleased groan that vibrates in his throat. Loki curls his arms around Steve's neck, pulling him closer as he teases the man with playful bites and nips, enjoying the idea of making Steve work for it even as Loki's hold is unrelenting and possessive, his fingers like brands on Steve's skin. ]
[ The heat that rises up under his skin makes Steve's head spin. The twinkle of lights around them blur and dance behind Loki as Steve pulls him forward, meeting the god tug for tug until he's wrapped around him, arms catching him in an embrace and his hands stroking down Loki's lithe back. He turns his head and sucks at a patch of skin exposed to him, licking along the edge of his jaw when he can't capture his lips. Soon he's panting, flushed, with the light of stars reflecting in his eyes as he looks dazedly into Loki's. ]
Loki.
[ He says his name with a loss of breath, lips brushing against his smooth skin as he leans in. It's a soft word, spoken like a secret. His fingers find the edge of Loki's clothes and slip under them, pulling his shirt up so Steve can stroke his back. ]
[ He arches his neck with a hiss, his eyelids fluttering. At the mention of his name, Loki turns his lidded gaze at Steve, brilliant green peeking through, all unveiled rapture. What happens next is a flurry of motion. Loki helps Steve tug his shirt off as he pushes Steve down on a floor of stars, straddling his hips. Stars burst as they land on the ground, colours reflected on their skin. Loki's hair falls over his face, but he never loses his intensity as he lingers on Steve, trapping their hands and fingers together, knitted close.
For a moment, he breathes heavily. Then he bends to kiss Steve, sweetness mixed with urgency. His hold loosens so that Loki can rest his fingers in Steve's hair, combing through it. ]
[ Steve goes down willingly, watching Loki lean over him against that backdrop of stars with wonder in his eyes as he lies back, pinned down by Loki's weight and squeezing his hand with their fingers laced together, caught by how fitting the god looks bathed in stardust. He's about to say something, maybe a comment about Loki being perfect just like that and how he'd like to draw him, but those words are forgotten when Loki leans forward. Steve pushes himself up with one elbow to meet the kiss, more heat and eager fire than gentle affection in the way he nips and tilts his head to deepen the kiss. A soft noise humming in his throat as he reaches up to cup his hand behind Loki's neck and pull him in. He lifts his chin, baring his throat as Loki's fingers run through his hair, the lights around them making Steve dizzy with no way to tell direction. As he can do is breathe in the moment, basking in the scene that was made as a gift. ]
[ Stars bathe themselves in Loki's pale skin and whipcord muscles. Steve's enthusiasm melts away some of Loki's intensity, making him warm and heady. Even the coolness of his skin does not dampen the heat behind his touches, the possessive tug on Steve's hair, even as Loki leans into Steve's touch on his neck. Loki lets out a contented sigh, a soft puff of air as he breaks apart briefly, blinking the light of the universe from his eyes. He looks at Steve as if he hung the stars there himself. ]
[ He never really thought that deeply about magic. It exists and it is useful enough, but like the fancy technology Steve doesn't consider it further than that. A skill or talent that happens to be useful. He's never looked up with wonder and thought about how beautiful magic could be until now. Until he was standing in a whole ocean of stars with someone that can make them as easily as breathing, yet looks at Steve like he's some sort of wonder. He brushes his thumb over Loki's cheek, watching the sparkles leave his skin and float up into the sky. It's like seeing the sky for the first time.
Steve kisses the bridge of Loki's nose, smiling against him, and then pulls back again, the heat between their bodies making the cool air more refreshing. ]
[ Loki shakes his head. It is still startling, being here, being with someone who wants him. It has been so long that Loki has forgotten it. Or perhaps he never truly felt it to begin with. ]
[ The hesitation just gives Steve room to act. He trails his hand back over Loki's shoulder and downward, fingers sliding over the slope of bare skin like he's mapping his way. He pauses as he reaches the edge of his pants and then shifts his weight so he can bring his other arm up to join the first, cupping his hands under Loki's thighs and pulling him forward, raising his hips up to meet him. ]
[ Loki stares at Steve. You're the one who made this happen. This was Loki's doing. Loki's work. Not terrible, not tragic, not tainted by his own hubris. Something he has forged, daring and fearful. He trembles briefly, caught in the sensation that this is his in a way nothing else is, that he can call it his and be proud.
With a sudden movement, he kisses Steve hungrily, helping him tugs his pants off. ]
[ The sudden response makes Steve purr. he returns Loki's kiss with force of his own, pulling off his pants eagerly and sliding his palms over the newly exposed skin, exploring the muscle of Loki's thighs and the dip between them. One hand curls over the shape of Loki's cock, fingers teasing the head as Steve brushes along the length. He tests him, trailing his hand back up to pet the area below his navel while he nips at Loki's lips. ]
You look like you're made of stars. Is that the secret? You're magic because you're made of light?
[ Loki whines, his knees buckling with a shiver. Praise was his weak spot and it was open for everyone to see. Not many people ever deign to pay him compliments after all, and right now, he was very susceptible to them. His nimble fingers work with Steve's shirt, practically close to tearing it off as Loki's teeth graze the bottom of Steve's lips, sharp and insistent. ]
[ The impatience only encourages Steve, who leans into the sharp edge of Loki's teeth, responding to the prompt willingly as his tongue flicks out to meet them. He raises his body up to help Loki get his shirt down over his shoulders, sighing as the cool air and the god's fingers touch his skin. The blond pauses briefly as he takes in the hunger in Loki's touch, the way he can't wait for Steve to shrug off his shirt before threatening to rip it. Then he moves, quickly sliding his leg beneath the god and bending his knee so his thigh is pressed up behind him, nudging him forward. ]
[ Loki huffs, a breathless laugh. He lets himself be nudged forward as his hands wander over Steve's chest and pecs with a reverence Loki rarely shows. ]
I want you.
[ Kissing the corner of Steve's lips. ]
I want your hands all over me. I want you to hold me so tight I cannot breathe.
[ Those three simple words out of Loki feel like he's getting handed a key to a brand new world. He breathes in deeply, admiring the way Loki seems to shimmer as he laughs. And then he turns his body, flipping Loki to the side and rolling so he can pin the god beneath him, holding him down like he might try to escape. ]
I'm not letting you go. I hope you know that.
[ He obliges Loki's words by running his hands down his sides, fingers bouncing lightly off of his skin as Steve counts his ribs and traces the edge of his hips. Once they reach that point, they hold him, kneading the tension lying in his frame as Steve perches over him. ]
[ It is the simple expressions Steve uses that catch his breath, making Loki pause and stutter. Even now, he looks up, eyes blown wide open, catching the light of stars in green. Sinuously, Loki curls his arms around Steve's neck, fingers brushing over his nape and short hairs. There was something utterly seductive about being at Steve's mercy, letting him dictate what Loki should get. He shivers at the thought. ]
[ The questions earns a grin from the soldier. He can tell Loki is looking for a compliment, and instead of finding that needy or selfish, he thinks it's sweet. The fact Loki cares what Steve might say is as meaningful as the fact he created a world of stars for them to lie in. He leans down, kisses him with a slow, deliberate attention. When he breaks off, Steve licks the edge of his lips, breathing warmth against his skin. ]
You're a small star, but the brightest one in the sky. I can pick you out from all the others. My light.
[ He runs his fingers through Loki's hair, threading them between the black strands and watching the stardust shiver as it's dislodged. Steve slides down Loki's body smoothly, teasing as he goes, taking the time to rub his erection against Loki's stomach and brush his calloused thumb pad over one of his nipples, guiding his legs apart once he gets to them so he can kneel between his thighs. ]
[ It is a rare thing to see Loki overwhelmed. But he's practically glowing, his cheeks warm from the compliments and the praise, turning him loose and limber. He whines softly, trying to get more friction. His hands reach out to grab Steve and pull him closer, though his success at that seems dubious at best. ]
