Once he's there, he realizes that there isn't much of a difference between being lonely at home and being lonely in a bar. At least, with him being here, he doesn't have to deal with being moody around the roommates he hardly knows.
After he's settled in with a drink, he sees a familiar face. Vaguely familiar. He considers the pros and cons of starting a conversation with this almost-stranger, but ultimately, he figures: why not?]
Hey, haven't I seen you at the gym?

But he still ends up at the bar by himself because he has nothing against trying to make some new ones. It's always worth the effort.
Which is why he's extremely pleased when someone comes over to him, asks if he's seen him at the gym. Looking up, Eddie's mouth curves into a wide smile, his eyes warm and bright. The guy is familiar, Eddie's seen him at the gym, thought of approaching him but not wanted to interrupt his reps or anything.]
Hey! Yeah, I've definitely seen you. Wanna join me? The Pale Ale here is great.

Name's Magnus Burnsides. I might've introduced myself before, except the gym is—you know, it's the gym. Don't wanna bother you when you're in the zone.
argh a million years later
Nice to meet you. I'm Eddie Thawne. And I totally get that, the gym is the gym. The only place I know where you go to suffer and be disgusting in public at the same time.
[The grin stays in place, and he leans his elbow on the bar, glancing over at Magnus.]
How long have you been in Riverview?
no subject
I think, like... [He starts to count the weeks on his fingers.] Maybe a month now? Not very long at all. What about you?

[Working out has never come naturally to Eddie - it was something he had to do to shed weight when he was younger, to be the person he wanted to be. To look good, to get fit so he could meet the physical requirements to be a police officer. It's always been something he had to work at, and that didn't come easy. But that doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy it either. At this point, he's been working out so regularly for so long that he starts to feel a little down and edgy if he misses a day at the gym.]
Been here since February. I guess it'll be coming up on a year in a few months here. Hard to believe, but I've even had a birthday here.

Hey, happy birthday! What am I, like, four months late? [A chuckle.] So you've been here a little bit longer than me. You probably know more about Riverview than I do. So what's cool here?
no subject
[A little laugh at that, and he shakes his head.]
Only a couple, actually. It was in early July. And cool, wow...mostly I work out, go to the bar, hit up the punching bag, that kind of thing. Not much different than what I did at home, honestly. I work as a Detective, so that eats up a lot of my time.

I'm a carpenter. Not a lot of Helping People in my job, but I still try to help out where I can on my own time.
no subject
Thanks. I do my best. And yeah, I'm in Homicide, so my job is basically gathering evidence and figuring out who committed murders, then bringing them to justice. Making sure they don't get away with hurting people.
[A soft smile at Magnus' comment though, and he shrugs.]
Nothing wrong with carpentry. I mean, I probably couldn't build something to save my own life. Closest I get is painting the walls.
