I ▹ PERIMETER GUARD ▹ SHUTTLE WORK
[ After the mission, getting the shuttle up and running, not to mention cleaning her up all nice and proper so she's ready for use again, is Jim's priority, and it's a project he throws himself into with vested interest and dedication. While the shuttle still works, there's a lot that needs repairing or even outright replacing, not to mention the overall old and worn aspect of both the interior and the exterior.
Despite this, Jim looks excited rather than bothered or tired, as he fumbles around the makeshift shuttle bay set up at the perimeter guard. Sounds of clinking and clattering around come from the area, and he can be found throughout the month working on several different aspects of the shuttle, from control panels to the shuttle exterior— repainting the outside completely, installing a more complete and advanced navigation system and flight controls, or he may just be found disappearing halfway into one of the panels beneath the dashboard, fumbling around with wiring and circuitry. If he hears someone approaching, he'll stick an arm out, gesturing vaguely towards a pen-shaped handheld device. ]
Hand me that laser cutter over there?

II ▹ CITY STREETS & OUTSKIRTS ▹ BIKE RIDE
[ In the midst of what starts to feel like a very good month, Jim gets a really nice surprise one of the days he gets to the perimeter guard: there, waiting for him, is an all too familiar bike— not just any bike either, but a peculiar engraving on the side of the leather seat lets him know that this exact bike used to belong to his father.
It's only natural that he takes especially good care of it, tuning it up and cleaning it until it's spotless and shiny, then promptly takes it out for a few spins during the next few weeks. From the city center to the outskirts where he won't find nearly as much traffic, he can be found just about anywhere, both riding the bike or taking a break somewhere, leaning comfortably against the seat as he sips on some juice or enjoys a tasty ice cream. Feel free to approach or even ask him to take you for a ride, if you happen to know him (or even if you don't, really). ]

III ▹ COMMUNAL APARTMENTS ▹ MOVING
[ Another change in Jim's life happens to be something he and Bones had been talking about, and finally now they've managed to find a place they both like and can afford (not that money's a problem for them, with both earning well and saving up the majority of what they earn). During the first two weeks of the month especially, Jim will be spending some time boxing up things and getting them ready for the move. They don't have a whole lot in their apartment here, and some of the lighter boxes he chooses to carry to their new home on his own. He'll smile at anyone he crosses paths with, daring to offer playfully to people he happens to know. ]
I'll accept a helping hand, if you've got the time.

IV ▹ ANYWHERE ▹ WILDCARD
[ Jim is nothing if not both active and sociable, so throughout the month it's not difficult to find him in several spots, be them bars and coffeeshops, parks, grocery stores, and even the hospital when he's coming over to meet up with Bones.
He also feels the shift of the city when the strange outbreak sweeps the Quarantine and causes some random cases of memory loss. It is, sadly, something he's not unfamiliar with, but more than his insight on their mission beyond the walls and sharing some details he happens to remember, he finds himself overall useless in finding a resolution or a cure. He will, however, try to help anyone who happens to be affected by the outbreak. ]

That's pretty impressive. Ever fixed those parts and put them back into a working ship? [ Taking a ship apart and separating parts between those that still work and those that are a lost cause is one thing, but replacing parts or fixing errors on an already working ship is another thing entirely. On a graveyard she wouldn't have to worry about a ship's life support or main engines shutting down because of a faulty connection or a wrong move. ]

There was a slight nod of her head.]
Yes, I found a light freighter in pretty decent condition. The reactor core still worked. It took some time before I was able to complete the repairs and the ship was functional again. [The memory was a bitter one, but she learned two valuable things: with time she could repair almost anything, and to not get attached to people.]
What have you repaired so far? [She didn't want to reveal too much of what she could do. Best to play things close to the chest and let him know of her other skills later...if they were needed.]

But you got it off the ground. [ It's what it sounds like, at least. ] Good enough for me to not mind you poking around some. Although you might have to deal with me hovering a little and double-checking things at times.
[ He glances over his shoulder, letting out a thoughtful hum. ] Frayed wiring and some burnt parts in the controls, mostly. The engine's dirty and has been stagnant for too long, so I'm sure it'll need some parts replaced and a thorough and proper cleaning. Some systems are still offline, such as the navigation system, and I was hoping to manage to get a shield modulator installed. I know it used to have one, but it's too damaged, it can't be salvaged. I'll have to replace it completely. [ He pauses a moment, tilting his head at her. ] Are you assigned to the Perimeter Guard? You could ask for a transfer, if not. I think it'd suit you, and you could work more closely with the shuttle.

His question does make her let out a soft chuckle.] Yes, I got it off the ground, and then it flew off the planet and probably into the next star system. [Her tone became slightly bitter at the end, those memories coming to the surface again. She never knew what happened to the ship, and she didn't care anymore.]
No, I wouldn't mind. I would ask for you to double check anyway. [She wouldn't want months of his hard work to suddenly go up in smoke because she did something wrong. Besides, this ship, it's not like what she's seen before. A bit too civilian, whereas she was used to finding old Imperial ships or X-Wings crashed on the sand.
She listened and created a mental list all the things that still needed to be done with the ship. The engine would definitely need a thorough cleaning and parts would be needed. His question though, that brought her out of her thoughts and blinked.]
I'm not assigned anywhere, or have been given a job if that's what you're asking. [She briefly recalled during orientation someone asking about her skill set or, wanting her to list it and she didn't. Rey didn't think it was worth it at the time, but...she would have to rethink her options. This ship wouldn't be suited for hyperspace, and building one from scratch would take time. She would, unfortunately, need a job.]
I haven't given much thought to what I would do here. I'm still trying to get my bearings. [She naively thought she could find a way off this rock within a matter of days...]

Great, then. I'll give you a crash course anyway, and we can try and figure out the differences between this ship and the ones in your own world. There are some differences between this shuttle and the systems I'm used to as well, so it's taken a bit of adapting. It's not too difficult, though. There are similarities that are universal, I feel.
[ She's familiar with spacefaring vessels, so that's all the advantage she needs. The rest can only be learned by studying and doing it herself.
Jim nods, perfectly understanding the need to have some time to adapt. ] Well, if you're ever interested, I can show you around the guard, introduce you to the different areas. I think it could be a nice fit for you, and there are plenty of people around to help you out. It's... it gives you a sense of purpose. Exploring and learning more about this place. Whether you want to go back home or you'd like to stay here, it's nice to have something to work towards, to feel like you're part of something, and that you're making a difference.
no subject
But, that was in the past. This was something new, and hopefully it wouldn't come back to bite her later on.]
Really? [Rey was taken aback by his offer. He'd give a crash course? Not expect her to do anything to prove herself or...anything of the like? It's refreshing, and nice. Though, some part of her is a bit on edge, wondering if this is a test in itself, but he seems like a good person. Poe said he was working with him, so...she shouldn't have anything to worry about. A small smile began to dance across her lips, excited about the prospect of working on a ship, getting it repair..some sense of normalcy returning.]
The ships I'm used to taking apart were war vessels. Imperial ships, or x-wing fighters. Sometimes Walkers.. [And he probably has no idea what she was talking about. Different ship types and how they were built.] But somethings are universal, like the physicals of actually flying and going through space.
[For the guard...she was still unsure of it. She needed a job, and since there wasn't a junkyard...what could she do? All she knew how to do was repair things. Maybe she should take him up on this.]
I might be. I need to go back home, and I know I'm on a time limit with funds. [They only give you so much when you get here, and then the next month she would have to pay rent....] But, I'm still trying to make sense of this place. Not what I'm used to--which is a good thing. [lack of sand for starters and not having it get everywhere.] If...it's not too much trouble, maybe you could show me around next week? The Perimeter Guard was briefly touched upon, I think. it's hard to really grasp what they're telling you at orientation.

[ Jim couldn't imagine keeping anyone in the dark like that, or leave them behind as some sort of distraction as he got away. He could only imagine how betrayed she'd felt, and to him it painted a poor picture of the world she came from. She'd have no such things to worry about here, not with Jim at least. He couldn't speak for everyone in the Quarantine of course, but there was a handful of people he'd trust to do the right thing, too. ]
Alright, well... I've heard about the Imperial ships and the x-wing from your friend. You'll have to enlighten me on what a Walker is sometime, though. [ He was curious to learn, even if he knew it would make very little difference here. ] And that works for me. Tell you what, whenever you want to take a look around, just find me on your phone and shoot me a message. We can meet up somewhere. And if you need anything, whatever it is, you can pester me too. If I can, I'll help you out.
Until then, if you've got any questions, I'll happily answer them for you. Sounds good?

The smile on her lips became a little wider. Of course she should've known that Poe would've brought up the ships they have in their world.]
It's bigger than a ship. It doesn't fly through space, it's... [How could she put it in a way that he would understand?] It's huge, big enough to have a lot of men in the center of it, long legs and a head or the combat cockpit area can fire at enemies.. And she was getting a head of herself here.] But, I might be able to find something that resembles it.
[Maybe a picture, or something similar to it...but, it's really nice to speak to someone like Jim. She could see why Poe wanted to work with him.
His offer though...it was a lot, and Rey was already thinking of a way to say thank you to him. But...her device could make calls?]
It can? Messages and calls? [They really didn't have comms like this in her world, could he tell?] I was about to try and take it apart to see how it works.
But.. is there anything I can do for you?

It also made him wonder how long she ended up stuck on that planet afterwards. Assuming she made it out eventually— she must have, if she knew Poe. Jim knew he wasn't the type to keep his feet on a single planet for long. ]
If you can make a crude sketch, that'll do. Although the library has plenty information on various universes, so there might be a picture in there somewhere.
[ He chuckled at her question, amused. Clearly she wasn't used to similar devices. ] Yeah, it can do all that. It can do even more stuff, but that's their main purpose.
[ He shakes his head. ] Never mind me. You've only just got here, so you should focus on getting acclimated.
no subject
So it's like a comm then...[Something similar to home, but more handheld and able to do more than just communicate to people.] What else can it do? [She wanted to learn about it as much as she could, and any help would be appreciated. Good thing she hadn't taken it apart just yet.]
Ah...[Getting acclimated. That was so much easier said than done.] I know I should, but doing something even for someone else, helps. Keeps me busy until I'm used to this place or find a way back.

[ He can see the appeal, definitely, but he hasn't been particularly tempted to look too deeply himself. He does have Beverly here, who comes from a hundred years in his future, and while she does come from a slightly different timeline, Jim is sure she could tell him a lot about the future were he to ask— and were she willing to share. But he'd rather not know, really. ]
Yes, exactly. A comm device, exactly like it. [ Smartphones are an ancient thing for Jim, but he's not unfamiliar with them. They're plenty useful around here, and about as advanced as the devices he himself is used to back in his world. ] Well, you can navigate the network, search information, listen to music, take pictures, play games, even check the weather or available maps... There's a lot you can do with these. Handy little things.
[ Her last words make one thing clear for him: she's one of those people who don't intend on staying here long, not if she can help it. ]
Tell you what, if and when I can think of something you can do for me, I'll ask. Deal?

[And really, was it cheating if she trying to see if the First Order were defeated or not. To know if Luke Skywalker and the Resistance had won and brought peace to the Galaxy. That's all she wants to know. To have some assurance that those she cares about are safe with Poe being the exception.
She nods her head, soaking up the information about the device could do. She wouldn't listen to music because...she didn't care for it? Rather, listening to music was nice but not a priority. Same with games, not unless there was a flight simulator on it, but it wouldn't compare to what she had on Hellhound 2.] Interesting. The comms we have are basically for communication, mostly voice, text or sending coordinates.
[The deal Jim is willing to make with her is one she can agree with.]
Deal. [If he needed something for the ship or for himself, he only need to ask. But she wasn't kidding when she said she wanted to help, because what else would she be doing right now?]
But, do you need any more help with rewiring?
no subject
Well— still. Probably for the best you don't go looking. Not to mention that you might find out about the future of that person, but in some other alternate timeline. Nothing's to say it'll happen the same way in your world.
[ He hums thoughtfully at her question, looking around them before shrugging. ] Sure, I don't see why not. It's not as thrilling as going for a spin, but we'll make do. Come on.
[ He beckons her closer, so they can both dive back into the panel and pick back up where he left off, pulling out old or frayed wiring and replacing it with new parts. ]
