I ▹ PERIMETER GUARD ▹ SHUTTLE WORK
[ After the mission, getting the shuttle up and running, not to mention cleaning her up all nice and proper so she's ready for use again, is Jim's priority, and it's a project he throws himself into with vested interest and dedication. While the shuttle still works, there's a lot that needs repairing or even outright replacing, not to mention the overall old and worn aspect of both the interior and the exterior.
Despite this, Jim looks excited rather than bothered or tired, as he fumbles around the makeshift shuttle bay set up at the perimeter guard. Sounds of clinking and clattering around come from the area, and he can be found throughout the month working on several different aspects of the shuttle, from control panels to the shuttle exterior— repainting the outside completely, installing a more complete and advanced navigation system and flight controls, or he may just be found disappearing halfway into one of the panels beneath the dashboard, fumbling around with wiring and circuitry. If he hears someone approaching, he'll stick an arm out, gesturing vaguely towards a pen-shaped handheld device. ]
Hand me that laser cutter over there?

II ▹ CITY STREETS & OUTSKIRTS ▹ BIKE RIDE
[ In the midst of what starts to feel like a very good month, Jim gets a really nice surprise one of the days he gets to the perimeter guard: there, waiting for him, is an all too familiar bike— not just any bike either, but a peculiar engraving on the side of the leather seat lets him know that this exact bike used to belong to his father.
It's only natural that he takes especially good care of it, tuning it up and cleaning it until it's spotless and shiny, then promptly takes it out for a few spins during the next few weeks. From the city center to the outskirts where he won't find nearly as much traffic, he can be found just about anywhere, both riding the bike or taking a break somewhere, leaning comfortably against the seat as he sips on some juice or enjoys a tasty ice cream. Feel free to approach or even ask him to take you for a ride, if you happen to know him (or even if you don't, really). ]

III ▹ COMMUNAL APARTMENTS ▹ MOVING
[ Another change in Jim's life happens to be something he and Bones had been talking about, and finally now they've managed to find a place they both like and can afford (not that money's a problem for them, with both earning well and saving up the majority of what they earn). During the first two weeks of the month especially, Jim will be spending some time boxing up things and getting them ready for the move. They don't have a whole lot in their apartment here, and some of the lighter boxes he chooses to carry to their new home on his own. He'll smile at anyone he crosses paths with, daring to offer playfully to people he happens to know. ]
I'll accept a helping hand, if you've got the time.
I'll accept a helping hand, if you've got the time.
IV ▹ ANYWHERE ▹ WILDCARD
[ Jim is nothing if not both active and sociable, so throughout the month it's not difficult to find him in several spots, be them bars and coffeeshops, parks, grocery stores, and even the hospital when he's coming over to meet up with Bones.
He also feels the shift of the city when the strange outbreak sweeps the Quarantine and causes some random cases of memory loss. It is, sadly, something he's not unfamiliar with, but more than his insight on their mission beyond the walls and sharing some details he happens to remember, he finds himself overall useless in finding a resolution or a cure. He will, however, try to help anyone who happens to be affected by the outbreak. ]

[ Finding new and secluded places to tuck herself had become a bit of a sport for Re-L. It wasn't as though she was a stunning example of a social butterfly in any sense of the word, and now that she'd come to find out, one after another, all the viruses and germs she'd apparently missed out on as a child in a dome she'd managed to become somehow a little more withdrawn. She'd say, if anyone cared to ask, that it was for her health and for the most part it was. On the other she simply didn't want to deal with this whole ordeal of being around too many other people for the sake of a festival or something. It all had seemed fun in the beginning but now that it had happened month after month -
There's a slightly paranoid part of her that wonders why they need all this distraction.
Regardless, she's decided to take a walk today, get out of her apartment for a little while after some disinfecting and letting the place air out a little instead of being her convalescent home, dressed in her typical all black just, you know, some shorts and some tennis shoes. There's been no expectation to run in to anyone, much less Jim, and she seems a little surprised before clearing her throat.
Thankfully Jim wouldn't need explanation. She's sure he's heard all about her issues from Bones - ]
What's that you've gotten your hands on?
no subject
So, meeting out here is unexpected, but Jim's glad to see her out and about, especially when it doesn't look like she might pass out at any moment. She does look a bit worse for wear, but he figures that's to be expected after so long being sick. ]
Hey. A beauty, isn't she? [ He smiles as he glances over at her, hand patting the leather seat. ] Was my dad's bike actually. Popped up through the portal a few days ago, sort of like an early birthday present.

[ At the very least the blue eye shadow covers up a lot of the loss of sleep thanks to coughing and whatever else. When she'd been ill as a child Daedalus had simply taken care of it in a lick of time. Granted, there hadn't been much to catch in the small bubble of Romdeau Dome, and when new strains came to be they'd been eliminated in short order. Here there wasn't really that option - not for common colds she'd never even heard of much less experienced. Bones had said it would be best to let them run their course naturally, and though she believed him...
It'd been real damn annoying if she's honest. ]
I can't say I've ever seen anything like it. That's for sure .. [ Again, not hard to do. Every bike like vehicle in Romdeau had been a very different style, and not one that she preferred over Jim's motorcycle if she's honest. Blue eyes sweep over the bike as if appraising, though for once she doesn't have a criticism to pass along it would seem. Maybe she's just not caught up enough on sleep and calories just yet, either. ]
Well aren't you lucky? When I turned 20 I only got to go to a festival.
Granted there's not a lot still in one piece to bring me from Romdeau.
no subject
He's fairly sure Bones will make sure to take care of that for her though, as soon as she's back on top shape. Evidently she needs it.
He lets out a laugh at that, tilting his head slightly. ] I'm looking at 20 in the rearview mirror, but thanks, I guess.
[ The bike's pretty different from most he sees around back home too. They're generally spokeless, a few don't even touch the ground, and they certainly don't run on the same kind of fuel. Pollution levels aside, he prefers this one. ]
Wanna go for a spin? I promise to take it real slow. [ Is he teasing her? It sounds like he's teasing her. ]
no subject
[ Thankfully they've already discussed it when she'd asked him about prevention or.. what the hell she could do to get rid of it right then and there. Since she'd waited so long to even tell him she knew she had annoyed the good doctor already, and by then her immune system was so worn down there wasn't a lot of options she could do immediately. She's already signed up for whatever he could do once he deemed her fit enough with enough eagerness to never deal with it again it was practically unreal.
Still, her head tips in curiosity as Jim says he's looking at it in the rear view, curiosity winning out - ]
Just how far in the rear view? Be careful you don't become an old man like Bones, you know. [ Not that time was something any of them could escape, let's be honest. ]
Sure. But you don't need to go slow. I can breathe through my nose enough to handle it now.
no subject
A decade, actually. And don't say that, Bones is only six years older than me. [ Hardly an old man, really. And Jim has a feeling the good doctor is the kind of person who'll live for at least a hundred years. More than that, he'd bet on it. ]
Mm, guess we'll see how well that goes. [ He smiles teasingly, nodding towards the passenger seat. He doesn't have helmets but he figures that, just like him, she won't care about that. ] Hop on, then.
no subject
Oh, look at you, ancient too. [ That little smirk says it all - a girl barely out of her teens taking a moment to get a shot in at him for the hell of it. She's learning to joke more, slowly but surely, and mostly on Jim and McCoy just because they're... easiest to joke with. Though the mention of Bones seems to jar something in her head as she takes a seat on the passenger seat of the bike, adjusting for a moment to make sure she's comfortable before a finger flies in the air almost like she's just remembered something out of the blue - ]
By the way, do you know what his favorite brand of whiskey is? I thought I might bring him a bottle when I come and get my vaccine to maybe... distract him from lecturing me too much like grandfather.
[ She's learned a lot about placation in life, and if she has to go through Jim to get the right stuff... she might as well. ]
Seat's comfortable at least.
no subject
Brand? [ He purses his lips and shrugs. ] I don't know. We don't really have brands where we come from anymore. Scotch's a good bet, though. If you can find that around here.
[ He glances over his shoulder, smiling briefly at her. ] Good. It was where my mom sat. [ She hated it, though. Without further explanation, he tugs back the kickstand with his heel, then revvs up the engine, waiting until she's holding onto him before starting down the street. ]
no subject
Great. So now I can still possibly hear shit because I didn't bring the right kind. [ There's one of those sarcastic rolls of her eye, but sh's sure Jim at least partially understands. If she's bringing a gift to placate or something to that effect, not bringing the right thing to get the wanted effect wasn't exactly ideal. She also considers the fact that McCoy might see right through it all and decide to call her on it, too, but it's a solid plan anyway.
That's what she's telling herself at least. ] I'll remember scotch, though. Hopefully there's not a thousand options on that and it exists..
Your mother? [ More and more she's realizing she's kind of alien for having never had that kind of relationship - a mother or a father, even if they weren't completely and genetically her own. Donov Mayer hadn't really been either, but.. she decides to just take a grip of his shirt and move on, for now - ]
I see the genetics are strong, then, if the driver was typically your father.
no subject
Once they make it out of the more crowded streets, he picks up on speed, though not doing any dangerous stunts in case Re-L isn't feeling too well. ]
Wonder what gave it away, [ He throws over his shoulder, the amusement still clear even with the sound of the engine. Funny how he inherited his taste for fast rides from a man he never even knew. ]
no subject
[ If she were in tip-top shape she'd be annoyed with him, but as it stood at the moment she's fairly happy with the wind on her face and hair billowing around her. It's a sense of freedom she's not felt in a little while, probably since she'd last stood beside Vincent to watch the frozen wastes around them fly by. Granted, that wind had been a lot more bitter and cold, but it was the same in the sense of the sense it gave her. Particularly after being cooped up for the past few weeks, it's nice. She's glad she stumbled on Jim, at least, in her little meandering walks. ]
I've got a good eye for these things. A bit of a natural. [ Or well.. she'd been made a bit of a natural. There's a distinction to be made, there, but not one that's big enough to make to Jim. ]
A car is nothing like this. It reminds me of the Rabbit, a little. Wind in your face and hair..
no subject
The name is unfamiliar to him, and while he keeps his focus on driving the bike, it does pique his curiosity. ] What's the Rabbit?
no subject
[ There's a pause as Re-L thinks of the best way to describe the air ship. In a way it would be nice to have around Riverview - it didn't need fuel (other than air) and was nimble enough to navigate in strange environments. She'd still have no idea how in the hell to put it all together, though - that had been Vincent's job, after all, and, well... she might feel a little bad about it if the others would be without it, or something. ]
If you want to be technical it was called the Centzon Totochtin - "four hundred rabbits." [ Re-L's tone indicates how foolish she thinks the name is, formal or not, but she presses on anyway. ] We simplified it to "the Rabbit."
It's an air ship. So far as I can tell everything is wind driven, including the electrical components and the repulsor technology that lifted it above the ground. Without wind we were stranded but... you can imagine that wind technology and no need for fuel helps a lot in a nuclear wasteland..
no subject
Wind-powered? Sounds neat. [ He can always appreciate an environment-friendly transport like that, even if he is a fan of those really old rides that all worked on gasoline or diesel fuel. In his time, all those engines had to be adapted one way or the other, even those someone who collected vintage cars. Couldn't have an engine being fuelled by something that no longer exists, after all. ]
Tell you what, if you ever get it here, you can take me for a ride.
no subject
[ The Rabbit is thankfully small and fairly easy to maneuver once one masters the width and breadth of it. Getting it out of the Quarantine would likely be the most difficult step, if only for streets clear enough to get it through. Still, she's fine without it for now. She's not exactly the type that likes to go adventuring too terribly often out of the walls of the Quarantine.
Too many things out for blood when it came down to it, though the Rabbit's motility might make all of that easier to get through on the whole. ]
Until there's no wind to power it. We once sat in the same lake bed for ... I think a week. I nearly drove myself insane in that period of time. [ But she'd learned to let go, a little, too. Big lessons from a little patience. ] Though out on the Delta there's always at least some breeze. Getting around outside the Quarantine might be a lot easier that way.
.. We'll see. Who knows what that portal may not deem to bring through next.
no subject
[ It's probably a big thing, so he knows she likely couldn't do that. His suggestion is more of a teasing jab rather than serious advice, though. ]
We'll have the shuttle up and running soon enough, [ He remembers suddenly. He glances very briefly over his shoulder, before his eyes turn back to the road ahead of them, slowing down just a hint. ] You heard about that already, right? [ He knows he hasn't told her himself, but he figures the news must've traveled fast. The shuttle hasn't been kept a secret by any means, after all. ]
no subject
You can only imagine. [ Granted, if she'd just been able to loosen up a little bit Pino and Vincent could've helped her to be content with where they were for the moment. The small autoreiv had taken a liking to mimicking everything she did, though, in that time, and really... she'd thought about ways to dismantle her more than once. Still, she's learned, though painfully, a little bit about patience.
And how to yank out errant chin hairs. ] I'm strong, but not that strong, Jim. Your vote of confidence is appreciated, though.
[ She wishes she'd be able to yank the thing around but.. not something she'd fine totally possible, honestly. Even on a really good day. ]
I've heard murmurs and rumors but.. hadn't thought to ask you about it if I'm honest. I was a little more concerned with this whole cold fiasco. I supposed I couldn't just texted, but.. [ He can maybe feel her shrug before she continues - ]
When do you think you'll have your maiden flight?
no subject
No clue. She can fly, there are just a lot of systems down so it's not safe yet. [ He's bound to get restless eventually, he knows, but he's trying hard not to give into the urge until he knows the shuttle is at least minimally prepared for it. ] You should come by sometime. Can't promise I'll take you for a spin, but if she's good enough to fly, you can count on it.
no subject
If it ever arrives you'll be the first to try to tug it down the alleyways of Riverview. [ It's a very large gift to be given, after all - that being Re-L's trust to take care of something that's hers. Or, well, at least try to steer it. With a little bit of wind to help it might not be so bad, if she's honest, but she's not sure about the length of the air ship in the corners. It's one of those strange measurements that would need to be seen to when the time came. ]
.. Have you tried it, then, to know it can fly but it's not safe? [ She can only imagine the size of Bones' aneurism at this point, if he has. Maybe he'll be in a better mood to see her than she expected - ]
I wouldn't mind that. I may even be a little bit of help, depending on what systems you have down at the moment.. No promises, though.
no subject
But he digresses. That'll become important if and when the Rabbit pops up through the portal. Which, admittedly, Jim hopes will happen now. ]
Well, we did fly her back to the Guard, after finding her. But yes, I have tried to take her up a couple times. Test flights, if you will. [ Not that Bones knows anything about that, and what he doesn't know won't hurt him. ]
no subject
I know you will, and it's fine. I have a feeling wrangling it out of the city is going to be the worst part. That and prying you off of it once you realize how fast it can go with the right wind. [ She remembers putting her face to the wind on a particularly gusty day, Vincent at the helm as he usually was, sipping her allowance of ginger ale. It had been peaceful, something she wishes she could replicate here, but knows won't be quite the same. For one, she'd have to fly it, and for two - well, it's still too damn hot in the Quarantine to replicate that bitter cold wind that was so fast to wake her up in the mornings.
Being able to get around within the Outer walls in a faster fashion won't hurt either - it might even provide more opportunity for longer range missions or just.. getting out of town for a little while. Both sounded rather appealing if she's honest. ]
Who is 'we'? [ She has a rising suspicion who that doesn't involve - ]
Sure, test flights. Whatever you want to call it, really. If you get it running, I would like to see it. I've never seen space before other than, you know, photos that probably do it no justice.
no subject
But well, until then he always has the shuttle. That counts for something.
He drives the bike down a steep paved road, taking a sharp turn towards an empty field in the outskirts of the city. There's not much there, but he pulls up and draws to a halt, turning off the engine and kicking the stand down to give the bike a rest. ]
Me, Poe, Bones, Beverly and Loki. We went out there and tracked down a mystery signal; that's how we found the shuttle.
[ So yes, despite what she might think, Bones was there. Praying to survive and cursing the damn shuttle that threatened to bring them down crashing more than once during the short trip. ]
I'll keep that in mind. You'll be one of the first I'll get in touch when she's ready.
no subject
I never planned to. You're too inquisitive for your own good on a level I don't think I could match. [ Sure, she'd gone and hurtled herself out in to a nuclear abyss to go and retrieve a single fascinating person, once, but she wouldn't be caught dead in a shuttle when she didn't know if it was going to be able to get her from one place to another safely. No way in hell, even. She'd be just as thrilled to find the air ship suddenly in the Quarantine, even if she'd only minimally participated in Vincent's maintenance to the thing..
Even if she could use it to just flit off and get away every once in a while, it'd be nice. She's maybe grown a little too used to the silence of the outside in their time exploring. Sometimes, the city and the constant festivals can creep under her skin a little bit more than she's willing to admit it dos.
Not that she'd ever admit as much. ]
Taking a rest, here? [ She swings a leg off to stretch a little bit, restless after her few weeks of chosen seclusion. She's not healthy enough to exercise yet, but once she is.. well, a few early morning classes might be in order to get back in to the swing of things. ]
The rest of those names other than Bones are new to me... [ Another shocker : Re-L the unsocial butterfly. ]
I appreciate it. Getting to see stars from here is one thing, but I'm almost positive it's a completely different view once you pass atmosphere.
no subject
Probably a bit of his captain habits kicking in, he's far too used to it. ]
Kind of hard to keep talking with all that wind in my face, you know? [ And to hear her, too. The bike's old and the engine's not exactly a quiet one. ]
They're alright. Friendly and helpful. Beverly's from the same universe Bones and I come from, or at least a parallel one. A few things are different between them, but we're both familiar with Starfleet and the Federation, and she was familiar with both me and Bones from her world. Poe's a pilot, and Loki's... well, Loki. He's an Asgardian god.
no subject
[ If she wasn't so like him then it wouldn't have been a compliment. Surely she wouldn't go around insulting herself even if it was in an effort to mess with Jim - that's a bit too far even for Re-L. While she liked to be deprecating, she wasn't particularly harsh toward herself ever. ]
Fair enough. [ The explanation makes sense and the view isn't bad either, her hands crossing over her chest out of habit as she stands there, looking out over the field and enjoying the fresh air. It's been too long since she'd been able to be out and about in public, really. ]
Oh? Well that's an interesting crux on her, then. I would guess she's from a time past you two, then? [ She's never heard of people from the same time lines if not similar, yet, but now that Jim says it, it seems pretty interesting to investigate. After all, how many chances might they have to investigate this kind of thing? ]
Asgardian? [ That pings her interest. ] I know Thor who's called himself Asgardian as well...
