flower festival

In the days leading up to April 2nd, residents new and old may notice advertising around the city, everywhere from digital screens to paper flyers pasted on blank walls, all advertising an upcoming holiday: The Flower Festival. Celebrating springtime, beauty, joy, and togetherness, the festival heavily features floral themes and dancing. The advertising mentions that on April 10th, a paid holiday, there will be a Blossom Picnic, as well as lists of various public dances at clubs or other open venues, and adult raves.

a celebration of spring

The Flower Festival's main event is the Blossom Picnic on April 10th, but it also features traditions of sharing food and drink, and dancing that span over the course of the whole two weeks. There are a large variety of events going on throughout the city, from dancing lessons in any wide variety of traditional dances, to old-fashioned sock hops, to adult raves complete with mild party drugs. Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own event at any point during the festival, and if your character creates an event and hosts it in a top-level, you can submit that thread for extra bonus points.

i. blossom picnic

The main event that kicks off the second week of the Flower Festival is the Blossom Picnic on April 10th. A relaxed and low-key event, it draws several thousand people every year to the spacious Riverview Central Park, where there is a generous lawn lined with various blossoming trees, and families, found families, lovers, and groups of friends are encouraged to lay out a picnic blanket and share food. There will be live bands playing (but not loudly enough to distract from conversation and peacefully watching the petals flutter in the wind), a variety of demonstrations of traditional cultural dances from many different realities and planets, and a ton of ice cream vendors. This is an excellent festival not only for celebrating togetherness with the people who are already important, but for mingling and making new friends.

Characters may either pack their own lunches or they can purchase pre-packed Blossom Festival lunches. Stores and street markets are carrying a wide variety of specialty food that is only available at this time of year - predominantly pastries, an assortment of types of candies, and ice cream treats all in various floral flavors, as well as a sort of ambrosia salad based around a sweet rose-flavored cream and a native fruit that is bright green and tastes like a combination of peach and citrus.

ii. dancing lessons

Starting on April 2nd, there will be dancing lessons offered almost everywhere you look! From partner dances to group dances to line dances; sexy and sensual or innocent and childlike - almost any type of dance you can imagine is represented, from any reality or planet that has people in Riverview Quarantine.

Additionally, the Riverview Central Community Center has multiple rooms blocked off so anyone who knows a dance from home can teach it to others in their community - sharing is caring, after all. Characters are welcome to block off one of these rooms and offer lessons in any dance they happen to know from home (and these sorts of thread starters would be eligible for the mingle AC Point bonus)!

iii. flower festival dancing

This is pretty simply what it says on the tin - in almost every club, community center, or other public space, there will be dancing at almost all hours of the day or night, formal and informal. Musicians bring out their instruments and play in the street for demonstrations of cultural dances and music at the same time as clubs are offering VIP cover charges for exclusive dances, and you can find anything in between.

There are also many low-cover-charge raves that allow under-18s so younger characters can stay up all night and dance like crazy. The legal drinking age in Riverview Quarantine is 14, and so anyone over 14 can enter and indulge in a few drinks, dancing, and playing tag with a non-intoxicating version of the colored powder featured at the adult raves. There is copious amounts of security on site to ensure that everyone is safe, as well as nurses and off-duty police officers to offer advice or care for anyone who overindulges out of lack of experience.

Grab a partner, a group of friends, or just cruise and mingle the various dancing events.

Characters may also notice that most of the street markets and clothing shops are offering clothing that features floral patterns, flowers as accessories, and that show a lot of skin - for men, women, and anyone in between!

iv. adult raves

Advertised on flyers and digital screens around the city, made to pop as if they were under blacklight, is a series of adult raves that are happening in various large empty warehouse spaces around the city, including one that is listed as the danger rave and hosted in an abandoned factory outside the inhabited city walls. With bouncers at the door to ensure that anyone entering is 18+, the raves are comfortably adult in nature. Clothing is optional, showing skin is encouraged, and there are a lot of neatly tucked away spaces for attendees to get some time alone with one or more than one person, as well as spaces intended for orgies. The atmosphere is sex-positive and non-judgemental, open to any orientation or preference, with various forms of protection available for free, however, to ensure that everyone plays safe there are sober security teams out en masse at all premises to oversee the events.

(CW: DRUG USE) In each location, there is one specific room where attendees can enter, and dance or play tag with brightly colored powder that contains small amounts of a legal party drug commonly available in Riverview, which is absorbed through the skin. Not much more intoxicating than having a few beers, the effects of the drug are a pleasant low-key buzzing euphoria, positive sensitivity to touch, a heightening of desires for intimacy, and a mild lowering of inhibitions. Once a character has been hit with the powder, the color lingers on the skin so other attendees can know who has partaken, but once the powder makes contact with a surface it deactivates, meaning that partakers can safely dance with non-partakers without sharing the intoxicating effects.

Please be sure to warn in subject lines for any threads involving drug use. And remember, there is always security to intervene and make sure everyone is safe.

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set at the Flower Festival, feel free to write it up!

[All things considered this whole festival thing is kind of a wash. Like, the foods good, and the flowers are real pretty, but nothing about it feels as fun as it's supposed to. At this point, Mae's seriously considering just going back to bed and sleeping for the rest of the day. At least that's something she knows she'll enjoy.

But then someone's inviting her to sit and her ears perk up and hey there's someone she actually kinda recognizes! Not from home or anything, but Lia did kinda save her life that one time, so they're pretty tight.
]

Sure!

[She ambles over and settles (more like plops) down onto the blanket, eyeing the assortment of goodies hungrily.]

Just so you know I am gonna be eating one half to three fourths of this, so I hope that's cool in advance.

[ Now there's a face Líadan recognizes and one she's quite happy to see. Mae's is a spirit she greatly appreciates. It isn't every day one comes into a body willing and ready to climb to any great height and she'd been wondering what her climbing partner was up to after the whole construct power matter was seen to. She's glad to see her looking well. ]

And here I thought no one in Riverview had a decent appetite! I'd be glad if you proved me wrong. Please, feel free! The stalls have plenty more.

[ And she'll be plucking a couple of the lemon cookies she got from Taako's stall out of the bunch. She favors them, okay? He knows his craft! ]

What have you been at? It has been some time since we took to the rooftop.
trashmammal: (and stay there if you have to)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-04-07 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
What can I say, I'm hungry for life! Food, also. Looooots of food.

[It's a healthy appetite for someone her age, she's pretty sure. Either way, she'd be an idiot to turn down free food, and Mae Borowski is no idiot! Her hand hovers over the spread laid out before her before she reaches down to snatch one of those weird candied fruit things.

Her face falls just a tiny bit when Lia asks how she's been doing, because it's really hard to come up with an answer that isn't "real shitty".
]

Just cruisin', you know? Livin' the life. I got a job now, that I have to go to. That's pretty weird.

[personal profile] leadintheyoung 2017-04-08 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
We have plenty of that available. If you'd like something less... sugary, was it? I'm sure we could find something like that in the stalls as well.

[ Lí herself is currently content enough with the sugary things. Taako said not to overdo it and she doesn't intend to, but then, she's not exactly sure what overdoing it for her would be. What is overdoing it to someone who eats the portion sizes offered in this place and ceases to be hungry from it?

And hey, hey. She didn't miss that face falling, lady. Or the word choice. Her brows knit a bit at that. ]

What sort of... job... is it? You don't sound very enthused...
trashmammal: (and sing the words)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-04-08 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sugar's fine. It's part of the food pyramid for a reason, you know.

[She pops the fruit into her mouth, savoring that weird, kinda orange-y tang. One hand reaches down to draw lazy shapes in the blanket, swooping and curving without any real direction. That Lia picks up on it so quickly is a little embarrassing, but she doesn't mind that much. She'd figure out one way or another. ]

It's... I dunno. [Not "I don't know what my job is", but "I don't know if I should feel excited".] They got me helping out old folks down at the hospital. Helping them get around and eat and stuff. I think I'm just still getting used to having like a "job" job. Like one that pays money.
leadintheyoung: (pic#11143544)

[personal profile] leadintheyoung 2017-04-09 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Is it? I was unaware there was a food pyramid. What's it for?

[ She is one hundred and ten percent earnest about that as she pops a cookie into her mouth, chewing thoughtfully. ]

It sounds strange me for the money part.

[ But it doesn't sound very exciting to Lí, what with it being a relatively stationary job and her love of activity and excitement. To have to slow down and be confined to such menial tasks is... well, it doesn't surprise her that Mae sounds the way she does considering her spirit. Not only that, but with as good a climber as Mae is and her balance? It really seems a waste. The reminder that a job brings money in is certainly helpful, but... well, she's a bit baffled. ]

What sort of job did you have before this, Mae? I would think you better qualified for something... more adventurous. Why ever would they place you there?
trashmammal: (where the fire burns hot and bright)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-04-09 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't! That's what makes this so weird!

[She throws her hands up, partly out of exasperation and partly just 'cause she feels like being dramatic, and flops down onto her back. The sky's way too bright for her, so she has to squint to keep her eyes from hurting, but it's a lot easier to keep talking about this without having to look Lia in the face. They've known each other for like, two weeks, tops, and she's already admitting she's a failure.

Way to go, Mae. Another friendship wrecked.
]

It's not like I don't like it or anything. It just feels... wrong. Like I don't belong there.
leadintheyoung: (pic#11143406)

[personal profile] leadintheyoung 2017-04-11 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Friendship wrecked? Hardly. Lí isn't going anywhere... except to the food stalls at some point in the future to get them more food probably. Mae's theatrics do earn a chuckle, though, and Lí shifts to make herself more comfortable. ]

You may belong elsewhere, then. There's no shame in admitting that or looking elsewhere for work should you find it true. You do have the benefit of choice.
trashmammal: (and stay there if you have to)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-04-12 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
[The words sting, probably more than Lia means them to. It's not her fault. Mae's been on the other end of this conversation before, and having all that thrown back in her face hurts in more ways than one. God Bea would just be eating this shit up if she were here.]

Yeah but... what if I can't go anywhere else? Like I'll be the first to admit I have zero applicable skills. [She pauses, laying her hands across her stomach and fidgeting, trying to find the words.] The first job I ever had, I got fired for stealing from work. Now I've got this whole second chance and I'm so goddamn scared of ruining it. Like if I leave or get fired and all a sudden it just [She wiggles her fingers, motioning like something's exploding into a puff of smoke.] Poof. Gone.

I dunno. Maybe I'm just being dumb.
leadintheyoung: (pic#11143444)

[personal profile] leadintheyoung 2017-04-12 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
[ Bea would also be told to mind her own damned business if Lí caught wind of it. The brunette will be reaching for another cookie. ]

I don't think you're being dumb at all. There's always somewhere else to go, though, and there always will be. Jobs won't cease to exist if this one doesn't work out for you, but... I wouldn't advise stealing if you haven't improved to the point so as not to get caught.

[ Did she just advocate stealing or increasing one's ability to do so? Details. ]

As for your skills, you're an excellent climber with impeccable balance and you've got such a spirit to you! I think you may have more skills than you realize, Mae.
trashmammal: (play with matches)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-04-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[She smiles, just a little bit, and sits up to snag one of them there cookies ( the way Lia's been snacking on them makes them look good as hell and she is not going to miss out ). Stealing definitely a thing she could do, and definitely has done before. It's prolly get boring after awhile, though, so she'll just shove that one in the 'maybe' pile for now.]

I dunno. You've clearly never seen me do crimes before. Mae Borowski, the Bandit Queen they call me! [She laughs, a little self-consciously, and sighs.]

But, uh, thanks. Doooon't think you can put "spirit" on a résumé, though.

[personal profile] leadintheyoung 2017-04-14 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's quite the title! Perhaps I'll tag along sometime to see you in action.

[ It's said in earnest and she's glad to see Mae reaching for a cookie. The only people who tend to be without appetites are the upset, the full, and the dead, after all. That word, though -- ]

What's a résumé?
trashmammal: (for the choices that you make)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-04-15 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah! You can run interference while I make off with the goods. We'll be the perfect criminal duo!

[She pauses to take a bite and oh. Oh man. Hot diggety shit that is one baller cookie. She quickly scarfs down the rest of it in time to hear Lia's question, which makes her look at her like she just grew a second head.]

Oh yeah, I forgot you were from weirdo fantasy land. A résumé's pretty much some bullshit, honestly. It's like this big list you make of all the work you've done and all the stuff you can do and then you just send it to people? And then they hire you based off of that.

Like I said. Super bullshit.
leadintheyoung: (pic#11143544)

[personal profile] leadintheyoung 2017-04-20 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
They won't know what hit them.

[ Devious? Who, her? Surely she didn't just sound as much and she honestly doesn't look it. Mae's explanation of a résumé gets a quirked brow that is decidedly more pronounced for the 'weirdo fantasy land' bit. ]

I suppose I can see the logic in it, but I'd rather see for myself what a body can do than take it plain on paper. There's more to a skill than simply having it.
