Ivar rubs at the back of his neck with one hand, a movement that makes him look younger than he actually is. It's so easy to pretend things are just fine when they see each other on a regular basis with some distance in-between them. Being this close without any warnings made it a lot harder. He had no reference for how he was supposed to act.

Not for the first time, he wished his brothers were here. Ubbe or Hvitserk had plenty of experience with girls. They could have told him how to keep things from getting awkward. Alas, Ivar was on his own here.

"Going to run out of here with your tail between your legs?" The words came out a little sardonic. It was just Ivar's way, using sarcasm to create a barrier where one had been smashed to pieces already.

Ivar looked absolutely stricken at the mention of Letha, as though Letha had stabbed him with a knife instead of with words. Sometimes, it was all too easy to pretend things were alright. Then he'd hear a mention of her name, or smell someone's perfume, or hear someone talking, and he'd remember that she'd left him.

In a paradox to the grief-filled expression on his face, Ivar's words are level, almost calm in an odd way. "Letha...no longer matters."

His voice stays even as he explains in short phrases, but this time it's more through sheer force of will. If he gives into what he's feeling right now, he's not going to be able to stop crying. "She left. Both me and Winter. Went through the portal to my world. And she didn't even tell me goodbye."

He didn't bother telling her what had come before. How they had slept together for the first time or how he'd finally told Letha that he loved her. Telling that would once again result in nothing but tears.
ragnarsson: ([11.27] Crying)

"Then go." His voice came out a harsh, raspy bark. It was the voice of someone on the verge of tears who was desperately trying not to cry. He could feel them gathering at the edges of his eyes, threatening to spill over. So he furiously swiped at them, as if he could will them back inside.

It was bad enough going through this heartbreak. But to show such a blatant form of weakness? That was more than any young Viking warrior could have stood.
