001 - August Happenings! [OPEN]

who: Kate Fuller & OPEN
what: August Post
when: 1st - 15th
where: Library/Coffee Shop/Bar/Around
warnings: N/A

Library/Coffee Shop[Open]

Kate had taken Cisco's advice and started taking part time classes while in quarantine. She doesn't have a specific plan for the future but she's having fun and doing something with her time besides working. She's decided to take calculus, a mechanics course with a Lab component and anthropology. Being overly studious meant that she wanted to get ahead before her classes even started. She could be found at the library or at a coffee house taking up a table with notes, textbooks and random post-its.

She's wearing plaid with a tank-top underneath and a plan pair of jeans. She's mindful of those around her while also remaining focused on her task. Besides textbooks she has what looks like a safe lock at her table that she's occasionally fiddling with. In a strange way picking and resetting the tumblers in the lock helped her relax and focus.

There are things that she didn't want to forget and bit by bit she felt them slipping away; maybe she just didn't want a normal life anymore.

The Quarantine[Open]

Kate didn't know what kind of bar the Quarantine was going to be but it didn't really matter. Her goal was to visit Drew while he was working. She had managed to get a job as a waitress with a boss who was willing to train her as a bartender but she still wanted to do some research on her own.

She wasn't dressed to be at a bar, wearing a cardigan and a pair of jeans, but she was open to talking to those around her. There was a light orange drink in front of her that sat mostly untouched. She wanted to try it and learn what was inside of it but she could only taste the sugar on her tongue.

Kate's thoughts twisted and wandered, wondering if bartenders had to know about wine or beer or if it was just mixed drinks. She played with a small plastic sword that had been in her drink with a cherry before she ate it. She wasn't looking to get drunk but Kate really wasn't an expert drinker.

Wildcard

[ooc: Come at me. Kate can be found walking home late at night or around the shared housing or getting a feel for the city so feel free to run into her; literally or figuratively. You can also hit me up for plans.]

Curiosity got the better of him as he watched her, wondering what she was doing with the lock tumbler, and what she was so interested in at the library was well. Kate was a curiosity, mostly because he never really took the time to get to know people, either back home or here. She was innocent, almost naive, and there was something refreshingly clean about her demeanor. She didn't seem to have any ulterior motives or desires. Kate simply was, and that among many things, made her a sort of magnet for his typically dour personality.

When she made her greeting, he found himself agreeing. "You too." And he meant it. He gave a gentle shake of his head at her question, though. While he had a vague sort of idea, he wasn't looking for anything specific.

"No. I've just...heard things about this place."

"That there are books here from...other worlds. I...don't know if it's true or not." He was hearsay, but in all his training, one of the most tried and true truths of things is there was always some truth to be found in rumors.

Still, his eyes flitted to the lock she was fumbling with before looking back to her. "What are you doing here?"

He didn't mean for his tone to sound accusatory or like an interrogation, but unfortunately, Vincent had a habit of sounding that way regardless.

Vincent shook his head in agreement to her comment. No. It wasn't strange. After being stolen from Gaia, brought here by some sort of portal that collected him simply because he had the fleeting thought of not belonging...but that didn't mean it couldn't be other things.

"No, but it could be useful."

Studying. It hadn't occurred to Vincent until this moment that anything normal may be occurring here.

"...you're a student." It was a question, but it wasn't stated as such.

Archeology and engineering. It was a strange combination, and Vincent found himself curious as to what sparked it. He'd heard her, of course, that she was trying to figure out what she wanted to do with her life now that she had one, potentially.

Archeology made sense, given there being so many ruins, but he also found himself curious as to what she thought she'd find. So many in Kate's position would give up, seeing nothing in their future, assume there was nothing worth fighting for after death had taken them, lamented their lot in the afterlife. Vincent figured he'd probably be among them.

Kate was an admirable woman, whether she realized it or not. "So...you want to find answers? Answers to what?"

It occurred to him that Kate had nothing to return to. She would most likely be dead in her own world, and this place truly did offer her the second chance she wanted. More than that, that chance included an all new home, complete with histories, peoples how had come before, and she had a naturally inquisitive mind. It left her seeming innocent, though he'd seen the sadness in her eyes, knew that the weight of some event somewhere, or sequence thereof, had taken away true innocent from her long ago.

All scientists, at least those left uncorrupted by the pursuit of power, shared that innocence, that sparkle of desire to know, that spurred them on, even when answers seemed always just beyond their reach.

"You...have a scientific mind." Vincent never had. It was one of the many bolts driven between himself and his father, even before his death.
