[Closed] Breakfast 101

who: Jace Wayland, Magnus Bane
what: Jace attempts to embrace the Mundane life and cooks breakfast.
when: July 20th 5 a.m.
where: Magnus and Jace's apartment. The kitchen.
warnings: Will update as needed.

Jace can cook. He learned very young to survive a Shadowhunter needed more than a seraph blade. He needed to know how not to burn himself making eggs. Toast was easy enough to learn. But beyond the basics cooking wasn't really his thing. Killing demons. Fighting. Being a weapon. Those were the things he knew best.

He also knew anything less than perfection was not acceptable. Cooking was no different than fighting or playing the piano. The only difference was he felt an odd sense of satisfaction reading several cookbooks and moving beyond scrambled eggs to an omelette.

He'd gone shopping the day before and had everything spread out over the counters. Books, eggs, vegetables, cheese-freshly shredded, etc. No mess, everything organized and kept clean, the way he kept his room. He was still wearing his pajama pants and at-shirt, barefoot, while cutting mushrooms. Sleep was not something he did often. The one night he'd spent with Alec had been the most sleep he'd had in days, but he couldn't simply climb into bed with Magnus's husband every time he had a bad dream or couldn't fall asleep for more than a few hours.

So here he was. Cooking. Alec had seemed strangely fond of the Mundane life he and Magnus had been living in Idaho and he'd caused his parabatai enough problems and worry. It was time to embrace his new life. Cooking seemed like the logical first step. Max and Izzy, Alec and Magnus, they all simply wanted a home and family. Jace wasn't sure what he wanted, but he needed to do something.
appetitive: (we'll go down in history)

Living apart from Alec, though easily remedied, was becoming something of an annoyance. After their large home in Wayward Pines, being assigned to a simple apartment to share with Jace was something of a downgrade. It was nothing personal against Jace—they had cohabitated with relative success before, when desperate times had called for desperate measures. And while they don't always see eye to eye, at least they can agree on one thing: Alec.

It's something that Magnus is struggling to adjust to being without, however. Having fallen asleep and woken up in his husband's arms for what now must have been half a year made it difficult to suddenly kick the habit. They had slept together, but with Max around it wasn't surprising that Alec spent most of his nights in his shared apartment with his little brother. It made Magnus into a lighter sleeper than usual, and when he heard the clink of pots and the smell of food early one morning, he knew that he might as well go investigate since he wouldn't be able to get back to sleep.

Shrugging on a silk robe and tying it at the waist, he padded barefoot out into the shared space and spotted Jace in the kitchen. He'd mentioned it before, briefly, but seeing it in person was something else entirely. Slowing his steps, as if approaching an easily startled animal, Magnus cocked his head to one side and smiled. "I didn't think you were serious about cooking," he remarked once he was closer.
appetitive: (and here's the frozen proof)

Magnus eyed the kitchen and was surprised to find how orderly everything was. Jace appeared to be the type to clean up as he went, so even though there were multiple omelettes sitting off to one side of the counter, there was no evidence of all the mess they should have made. He'd always kept his room fairly organized, too, but this was a level of control Magnus hadn't expected.

Glancing down at his hands as they were filled, he delicately sniffed the omelette and found it to be highly appetizing. He set it down at the breakfast counter and slide onto one of the stools so he could have a meal and a show. "He surprised me with his cooking, considering Isabelle's interesting opinions on cuisine," he said, trying to be kind when honestly he couldn't stomach Izzy's cooking. Taking a bit of the omelette, he made a sound of appreciation for the taste. "The pepper is a nice touch," he said as he lazily waved his free hand through the air to start two mugs of tea brewing for them on the opposite side of the kitchen.

Magnus nodded, listening as Jace told him things he had both guessed about Alec early on and been told a number of times. "Alec has an interesting habit of sharing his food with people he cares about," he remarked, taking another thoughtful bite of omelette. "Even with a plateful of cookies, he'd break one in half to give to me." It was endearing, even if it was a little silly considering there was enough for everyone. Eyebrows lifting, he tilted his head to one side. "I can't remember if she had any successful attempts, but don't let her make anything involving tuna."

As he watched Jace go through the motions of cooking, Magnus had to retract his earlier surprise at finding him in the kitchen. Cooking took focus as well as planning, and it lent a certain sense of control to the chef, all of which seemed to be things that suited Jace. He could also imagine that certain recipes would take a bit of muscle to carry out.

Reaching out a hand for his tea, which suddenly appeared from across the kitchen, he sipped thoughtfully rather than immediately answering the question. It made sense that Alec would tell Jace everything that happened to them while the parabatai were apart, even if it hadn't seemed that way to Jace. "No," he said, relaxing in his seat and leaning forward with his elbows on the counter. "Though I miss aspects of it. Mainly, I thought it was a safe place, but that was proven wrong rather quickly."
