( closed ) mystery transmission

After a transmission tower in the Abandoned City was repaired following the storm a few months ago, the Perimeter Guard radio center has been picking up a continuous eerie transmission that sounds like a combination of a sonar ping and a staticky voice saying a long series of seemingly random numbers. The transmission has been tracked to its source, which seems to be some sort of vessel that's under one of the many waterfalls in the delta area of the Abandoned City. It is not known if it is easily accessible or if caving will be required to reach it.

The objective is to follow the signal to its source with specialized equipment and find out whether it is a distress signal, an important piece of abandoned technology, or something else entirely. Besides the usual environmental dangers of traveling for several days by land into the Abandoned City, including monsters and other dangers, there is heavy speculation that whatever is sending the signal is super haunted. Additionally, some caving may be required to reach the signal source.

Oh, he is so glad she doesn't follow the rules. Well, generally speaking he's always an advocate for picking and choosing which rules to follow, but this time around he's glad for a very specific reason. His brow raises and he smiles almost instantly at the correction of the rank. "You don't say? Well, that's.... that's amazing. I always knew he had it in him, between you and me— and he looks really good on that chair. Glad to know I wasn't wrong."

"It's always a rewarding feeling, isn't it, to see someone you've helped mentor succeed?" Alyssa particularly comes to mind, for her. She hopes - knows - Alyssa has amazing things ahead of her.

"It is," Jim nods, smiling a little. "Not sure if he'd say I mentored him. You know he was ahead of me in Starfleet— I just graduated faster. And he never really needed much mentoring. He's a natural." Merit where merit's due, after all.

"You provided opportunities for him though - people don't just get to sit in the captain's chair whenever they want."

Well. Unless they're Vash.

"No, I suppose they don't." Thankfully he's never had to deal with that sort of disciplinary issue on his crew. They all have a great deal of respect for both the chair and their captain, something Jim genuinely appreciates, while hoping to return that same level of respect himself. "He's made for a fine acting captain on occasion, though. Very impressive. I'm sure he'll make for an excellent leader, too."

"From everything I've heard, he was." She smiles softly. "Or will be."

"And will be," he corrects with a faint little grin. Time being non-linear and all, both are probably happening at once. Hypothetically, anyway.

"Right." Time travel and other universes are without a doubt the most headache-inducing part of their lives. Finishing up her ministrations to his hands, she adds, "Well you're almost as good as new now. Try not to get into any more fights with trees or I might have to report you to Dr. McCoy."

He huffs a chuckle at that, shaking his head a little as he leans back and looks his hands over. "Trust me, even if you don't tell him, he'll find out anyway. He just has this way of knowing." He nods at her. "Anyway, thank you. Anything I can do for you?"

Shaking her head, she smiles softly. "No, I'm fine. More than fine actually - thank you for inviting me to come with you. It's been... rejuvenating for me, to be out here."

"Well, it wasn't why I asked you, but if it works," he shrugs, smiling a little at her. "Just let me know if you need anything during the trip. I'll do what I can."

Maybe not, but she appreciates it all the same. "Oh don't worry Jim Kirk - I know your true motivations. I'm just here to help you hide from a certain worrywart doctor, hmm?"

"Mm, exactly. That's the only reason you're part of this team." He's joking and he knows she can tell, as he knows well that she hadn't been serious at all with her own words, either.

Tsk! "Shameful! Good thing I like you so much."

[winscenario]

He grins and chuckles at that, nodding. "That's me. Infuriatingly likeable."

"You should put that on your friendr profile."

[winscenario]

Jim laughs at that. "You're probably joking, but I might just."

She laughs. "Come on, we probably should catch up with the others, before they get worried."

"Alright," he nods, standing up slowly so he won't feel dizzy or sick. Luckily there doesn't seem to be any side effects from the light concussion, and he walks alongside her back to where the rest of the group is without any problems.
