who: Taako & whoever wants in on this
what: Fighting monsters in a tunnel basically counts as a dungeon crawl, right?
when: Late March
where: Those tunnels!!
warnings: Uh, violence, eldritch horrors maybe, he's got some weird spells
notes: If you wanna do something that doesn't involve fighting hmu at
batsecretary!!
[Regardless of who asks, Taako will maintain that he had a shitty cleric back home, but suddenly being without one at all is making him appreciate Merle way more than he ever did. Not having a team to rely on makes battle a lot more uncertain; there's no Magnus to take the brunt of the damage, no Merle to heal or buff them as needed, no helpful NPC to swoop in and save the day.
But a threat to the city means a threat to him, so he's signed up to help cull the creatures in the tunnels. He needs the experience, too, if he's going to level up and figure out a spell strong enough to get him home.
Really though he's just hoping that these creatures are easy enough to dispatch, and mostly he's right. Compared to some of the shit he's had to put up with, over-sized lizards aren't particularly scary, nor particularly threatening, though the amount of them is concerning. Luckily he has a lot of area of effect spells.
In the interest of not immediately running out of spell slots, he starts with low level spells and his single attack cantrip, which results in a lot of frozen creatures leaving a trail behind him, although a few of them have also been on the receiving end of a magic missile, leaving them just straight up dead.
Eventually he moves on to stronger shit: a large sphere of fire moves through the tunnels, directed by Taako, held still when he comes across any allies so that they can move around it, and he'll encourage people to stick with him, since he's used to fighting in groups. At some point, a little troupe of water elementals follow after him, attacking any of the creatures that get too close.
It starts to take it's toll, though, both the spellcasting and the attacks that the creatures manage to get in. His clothes are torn and bloody, and he leans a little more heavily on the Umbra Staff at some points, just needing to take a breather. Finally, he realizes it's worth spending two spell slots on fixing himself up, and waits until he comes across a large group of the lizards.
Sleep knocks them unconscious, and Taako kneels down in the middle of them, reaching out with a hand wreathed in shadow. When he touches the creatures, they awaken for a very brief struggle, before they just... die. Taako's wounds knit themselves back together, he sits up a little straighter, and moves on to the next one and the next one until they're all dead.
And then he gets back to work.]

[If he hits her with a spell he should definitely buy her a drink.
And he's totally cool with her taking point, propping his umbrella up on his shoulder as he starts walking.]
What's your defense like? You okay to take hits from these things or do you want a hand with that?
[He has a spell in mind that might help, since she's hardly the big & bulky type that he associates with high HP.]
no subject
I can handle most of what they dish out if they land a hit. Save your energy for yourself, or only if it seems like I need it.
[She's not big and bulky, it's true, but she's agile enough to evade the worst of the attacks, or quick enough on the offense to get them before they can get her. At least, consistently with the smaller, younger creatures. The older ones with more bulk have proven to be troublesome at times. And in the end, yes, she knows how to take a hit. Knows how to fall and get back up to her feet again. Adjusting her grip on her sword, she approaches an intersection in the tunnels quietly.]
You don't have anything that senses them in advance, do you?
no subject
At her question, though, he hums.]
Not exactly sense, but I got something.
[He points the umbra staff at a point in front of him, and from Bryn's perspective, literally nothing happens.
But Taako just summoned an invisible floating eye, that he waves forward to duck around the corner, his head tilted as he adjusts to the slight double vision it gives him.]
Alriiiight, we got one about 15 foot down that tunnel, against the left side of the wall.
[He's a helper.]
no subject
Well, might as well as see if he's right. Bryn heads down the corridor and around the corner and yes, fifteen feet down there's one of the creatures.
Sword held at the ready, she steps forward, expecting Taako to be behind her. Pleased to see it's facing away, she rushes in, thrusting her sword forward. If it lands, she'll pierce its brains and dispatch it before it can even fight back.
It hears her, spins around before she can land the blow, however. Her sword catches its shoulder, and she pulls the blade free, landing the next thrust more successfully. With a huff of breath she steps back, pulling her blade free. She looks back to Taako and gives him a little smile.]
One of the smaller ones, thank the deities.
no subject
It seems like she's got shit under control, though.]
Nice work, bubbale. But I think I got something fun for you, can I cast spell on that sword of yours? It'll beef it up for an hour.
no subject
The sword already has some magic to it. [With a little concentration, she focuses on the sword and the silver blade morphs, reshaping itself to grow smaller, and smaller until it encircles her wrist. Then, a little more quickly, she wills it to reform it's default shape. Bryn looks at Taako with some worry.] It's part of the blade itself. I don't have any magic itself. It won't affect the blade's innate qualities, will it?
no subject
[He'd love to study it to see if it can be replicated, but that's a conversation for another time.]
But nah, it won't mess with the magic that's already in there, it'll just give more damage to your hits.
[A +1 on attack rolls, if we're getting specific.]
no subject
Alright, lay it on me. Could use a little help if we're going to make a dent in these things.
[Then she flashes him a smile.]
And if you think the sword is cool, remind me to show you what else it can do when we've got some down time.
no subject
It's a not a sex thing, is it?
[pls]
no subject
You wish that was a sex thing.
[Okay, she could probably form the blade into a dildo if she wanted by why would she do that. The blade has two default forms. Bracelet. Sword. The last thing she needs is to lose track of herself in the heat of the moment and accidentally will it into bracelet form once more, or worse, sword.]
Anything else or should we start tracking down more of these beasties?
no subject
That's about all I got without breaking out the big guns, but lemme know if you want stone skin later.
[He has a spell for that!]
no subject
Stone skin? Have you got a list somewhere for all of these spells you know?
[And in the meantime, Bryn starts walking down the hallway again. The monster she's killed before has been left behind. She's certain that there will be clean-up crew later.]
And where's our next target? Or targets?
no subject
[Taako follows after Bryn, half his attention on her and the other half on the arcane eye that's still floating several yards ahead of them.]
Uh, lemme just.. [Another wave of his hand and the invisible eye moves further ahead.] We got a couple more turns to make and then there's about a dozen, it's weird to do this.
[Seeing two things at once is hard, although not as hard as seeing three things at once, so at least there's that.]
no subject
Bryn keeps walking, a little more slowly as Taako explains that they have a little time before the next group. But there are a dozen, not one, and which means that they'll definitely have to handle them together.]
Why don't you shut that off for the moment so you don't have to split your attention. Can we split them half, I'll get the first six that come to me and you get the other?
no subject
[And he does, letting his focus shift from the arcane eye back to what's in front of them, as he considers Bryn's question.]
I could try drawing some of them out, couple at a time?
[He's not sure how well the lizards will respond to whatever they do, but thinning the pack seems like a pretty good idea.]
no subject
Can you use any sort of shielding spell to let through just a couple at a time? If you can do that I can work through them at my own pace.
[If not, well, then she's just going to have to work fast.]
Or whatever you think is best. Just give me a heads up if things change and I'll adapt.
[She turns one corner, headed for the second at a bit of a quicker pace.]
no subject
[It's kind of a whisper-hiss as he jogs after her; he was thinking more along the lines of "lure a couple out at a time if that's possible".]
You want me to take point on this one, I've got a couple area of effect spells left?
[If the numbers are worrying her.]
no subject
She glances at Taako over her shoulder, and falls back a step.]
Why not. Show me what you can do, I've got your back.
[She'll jump in if necessary, and probably will be able to pick up on whatever he's doing enough to not get caught in the blast if she needs to join in.]
no subject
[That really doesn't sound all that reassuring, at least not if you're a lizard monster thing, but Taako rounds the final corner and stops at the entrance to a little side tunnel, where the lizards are waiting.
He gives them a couple seconds to notice him and Bryn, waiting until they've started running forwards. Then he holds out a hand as if he's gripping something and pulls upwards.
Black, viscous tentacles appear out of the ground (although there's no damage to the tunnel) and start grabbing the lizards, battering them against each other and the walls. A few of the lizards are probably going to make a high enough dex saving through to avoid being grabbed, so those are Bryn's.
Taako kinda needs to concentrate on the tentacles right now.]
no subject
Sword at the ready, she waits for their approach, timing their speed just right. And when they're close enough, she leaps up and over the gaping jaws of one lizard, landing a foot solidly on it's head before continuing past. At the rear, she thrusts her blade forward toward the open mouth of the second lizard as it whirls around to lunge at her. She catches it at the roof of its mouth, and holds it there for a split second as it hisses in response. Jerking the blade free, she brings it down on its head, but only a moment before the second lizard smacks her with its tail.
Skilled as she is, she can't suddenly increase her mass or weight. She stumbles, giving the lizards a chance to recover. Half growling at the back of her throat, she cuts off the tail of the first lizard, and kicks the second away long enough to pierce the first one's side while it's in pain. A second, a third time, before turning back to the second. With Taako still upright so far as she can tell, she doesn't turn to watch. Merely calls out:] Still good?
no subject
All good, but you got one incoming!
[It slashes at him but he dives out the way, a little too slow to completely avoid getting scratched, but it keeps moving forward rather than slowing it's momentum to turn around, so it's about to Bryn's problem.]
no subject
Got it!
[The lizard is bigger than the other two, but with only one to focus on she can dodge more easily, can give it all of her focus. Sword held before her, she slashes across it's claws as it swipes at her. The lizard snarls, and Bryn sidesteps, jabs at the lizard. It sweeps back out of the way, and Bryn circles to hold her ground against it. To keep from being circled into a disadvantageous position. The creature is intelligent, more than the others that Bryn has slain before, but not enough to overwhelm Bryn. Before too long she's stabbed her blade deep into it's skull, hitting the brain and killing it in an instant.
A smaller lizard holds back, self-preservation keeping it from attacking, but Bryn's on a roll and she lunges forward to skewer it before it can get away. Panting, she turns to check on Taako once more.]
no subject
He can't exactly control them, that's not how this spell works, but it does help to keep as focused as possible.
Bryn dispatches two more lizards, and the ones left in the tentacles aren't exactly... doing well.]
If I drop this do you wanna pick off anything left?
no subject
I've got it. Let them go and I'll finish them off.
[And then ask him where in the blighting hell he got tentacles because that is both rad and really fucking crazy ok.]
no subject
He drops his hand and the tentacles disappear back into the ground, leaving no sign of their existence aside from the lizard corpses. If Bryn looks like she needs any help dispatching the last few, he'll shoot a few rays of frost at any stray lizards.]
