who: Taako & whoever wants in on this
what: Fighting monsters in a tunnel basically counts as a dungeon crawl, right?
when: Late March
where: Those tunnels!!
warnings: Uh, violence, eldritch horrors maybe, he's got some weird spells
notes: If you wanna do something that doesn't involve fighting hmu at
batsecretary!!
[Regardless of who asks, Taako will maintain that he had a shitty cleric back home, but suddenly being without one at all is making him appreciate Merle way more than he ever did. Not having a team to rely on makes battle a lot more uncertain; there's no Magnus to take the brunt of the damage, no Merle to heal or buff them as needed, no helpful NPC to swoop in and save the day.
But a threat to the city means a threat to him, so he's signed up to help cull the creatures in the tunnels. He needs the experience, too, if he's going to level up and figure out a spell strong enough to get him home.
Really though he's just hoping that these creatures are easy enough to dispatch, and mostly he's right. Compared to some of the shit he's had to put up with, over-sized lizards aren't particularly scary, nor particularly threatening, though the amount of them is concerning. Luckily he has a lot of area of effect spells.
In the interest of not immediately running out of spell slots, he starts with low level spells and his single attack cantrip, which results in a lot of frozen creatures leaving a trail behind him, although a few of them have also been on the receiving end of a magic missile, leaving them just straight up dead.
Eventually he moves on to stronger shit: a large sphere of fire moves through the tunnels, directed by Taako, held still when he comes across any allies so that they can move around it, and he'll encourage people to stick with him, since he's used to fighting in groups. At some point, a little troupe of water elementals follow after him, attacking any of the creatures that get too close.
It starts to take it's toll, though, both the spellcasting and the attacks that the creatures manage to get in. His clothes are torn and bloody, and he leans a little more heavily on the Umbra Staff at some points, just needing to take a breather. Finally, he realizes it's worth spending two spell slots on fixing himself up, and waits until he comes across a large group of the lizards.
Sleep knocks them unconscious, and Taako kneels down in the middle of them, reaching out with a hand wreathed in shadow. When he touches the creatures, they awaken for a very brief struggle, before they just... die. Taako's wounds knit themselves back together, he sits up a little straighter, and moves on to the next one and the next one until they're all dead.
And then he gets back to work.]

I don't know what wizards do, we don't have them where I'm from. The closest is an Asgardian who tried to take over the planet and killed a bunch of people.
[So forgive him if magic makes him a bit antsy.]
no subject
[They don't have Asgardian gods, and logically he realizes that his frustration at not knowing something he's feeling is the same as what other people are feeling when he talks about magic but he's... lonely.
It's lonely, when no one understands the world he comes from. There are people that seem to follow similar rules, but it's not the same.]
You don't have to believe me if you don't want, I give no shits, but before this place decided to drag me in, I was trying to save the goddamn world, and actually doing a pretty fucking okay job of it, go figure!
[And now he's here, feeling useless and trapped and maybe that's really why he was so eager to come fight. He just wanted to throw magic at emotionless monsters until he felt better.]
no subject
Maybe Taako was trying to save the world, maybe he is in the presence of another hero. He's certainly got enough blood on his hands that he has no right to be potentially taking Taako to task for his actions. He feels wrong-footed, sort of like an idiot, but he just nods shortly.]
You helped me before, didn't have to, I guess that means I'll believe you in return.
[For now, at least.]
Come on, I'll escort you out of here.
no subject
[Maybe he should tone down the sarcasm now that Bucky has relented a little, but, well, Taako's an asshole sometimes.]
But I don't need to go back. I'm fine.
[As if to make a point, he waves a hand over himself and casts prestidigitation, cleaning off all the dried blood and dirt, to show that underneath it all he's faring pretty well, now that he's healed himself with the HP from those poor lizards.]
no subject
Fine.
[He looks reluctant, but he steps forward to place himself at Taako's shoulder as if in a silent offer to fight with him until he is ready to go back.]
no subject
Taako's eyebrows shoot up, because he kind of expected that fine to mean bye, since it seems like Bucky has made it pretty clear how he feels about Taako and his whole magic thing.]
Are we doing this?
[A team up or whatever.]
no subject
I owe you.
[He might not have appreciated the help, or said thanks properly, but he wants to pay his debt for the use of his leg.]
no subject
[It's an economy he's intimately familiar with; a favor given is something owed, but it's not particularly something he wants to perpetuate right now. If it was someone he was familiar with, someone he was comfortable with, it would be different, and he'd happily milk it for all it's worth.
But Bucky is going through some heavy shit, he's messed up, and that's not the kind of situation Taako wants to feel like he's taking advantage of.]
You wanna stick around, I'm not gonna send you packing, but don't do it 'cause you think you owe me.
no subject
But he just nods, not making any move to leave.
He'll do this because he owes him, but he can pretend it's for other reasons if it makes Taako more comfortable.]
James.
[Not 'my man' not any of the other weird terms of endearment he seems to keep coming out with. James doesn't sound right, but it's easier to bear than Bucky.]
no subject
Taako.
[If they're trading names, although Taako knows he's not exactly hard to figure out, considering he's been on the network pretty vocally and assumes that everyone has access to it. But it's the gesture that matters.
And then he starts walking.]
no subject
Maybe it's a fake name.
He doesn't bother to question it, though, just following on just a half step behind. He is still wearing the splint under his clothes, but it's nearly impossible to tell as he makes a concerted effort not to favour one leg over the other.]
Why did you come down here?
no subject
[There's a little more to it than that, he does want to help, he just isn't going to admit that there's even a tiny bone of selflessness in him, since that sort of thing is too easy to exploit.]
no subject
[Meaning, he's not buying it as the only answer. He's trying to get a read on if Taako just enjoys fighting, or if he's a hero-type.]
no subject
[It's still not an entirely straight answer, but it's almost an admission that he feels responsible to help when he has something that can help.
Taako shrugs.]
Anyway, gotta keep practicing if I plan to get less shit at this.
[He figures saying "more powerful" might not be what Bucky wants to hear, even if that's what he's going for.]
no subject
Most people can't fight like me either.
[Which is why he's also down here doing his thing to help out.]
Come on, stick close.
no subject
[Whether that's to the "fight like me" or the "stay close" will forever main a mystery, but Taako does actually stick by Bucky's side, about a foot behind him because if something comes barreling down the tunnel, Taako doesn't want to be the first one hit.]
no subject
There's nothing for about eight minutes, and then all of a sudden more creatures are appearing as if out of nowhere.]
Protect the rear!
[He snaps it out as he dives into the fray ahead, knives flashing.]
no subject
Just like he isn't surprised that Bucky decides to throw himself right into a fight.
Dude's got a death wish.]
I got you.
[He's getting a whole lot of use out of Ray of Frost, today, but it's easier enough to point the umbra staff at any creatures that get a little too close for comfort.
He spares a glance towards the ceiling of the tunnel and notices a handful of lizards crawling out from the cracks there, one of them right above Bucky. Taako can't cast anything harmful without risking hitting Bucky, so he uses prestidigitation to throw a shower of sparks in the lizard's face. It's just an illusion, but it's enough to scare it into losing it's grip on the ceiling.]
Head's up.
[He thinks he's funny.]
no subject
Or, at least, Bucky doesn't think so when a lizard lands directly on his head. Luckily, he's pretty fast and so he only gets a few superficial scratches to the scalp before he's dragging it off and throwing it into a nearby wall with a horrific cracking noise.
The spells set him on edge. He knows they're being used by someone apparently on the same side of this fight as him, but they're completely alien and it bothers him not to know how well he'd fare in fighting Taako. He does his best not to think about it for now, keeping his all into the fight, though more keep swarming around him and nearly pulling him under.]
no subject
Taako has a spell in mind that can clear this up real quick, but what he can't do is cast it with James in the way, not if he doesn't want to do some serious damage to the guy, and Taako isn't that much of a dick.
He moves forward, continuing to shoot rays of frost at the lizards he can see.]
James, get your ass back here!
[If... he can...]
no subject
Can't.
[It's a bitten off reply as he goes under another two, emerging coated in blood from stabbing them in the soft underbelly.]
Just do whatever you need to do.
no subject
I guess we're doing this.
[The umbra staff clatters to the ground, and Taako runs towards the mass of lizards, changing as he does, so that the figure that leaps into the fray isn't so much elf shaped as it is polar bear shaped.
Teeth and claws tear into the lizards, but he's careful to avoid Bucky, using his new bulk to keep the creatures back for long enough that Bucky can catch his breath, get to his feet again. Taako can't talk, when he's in this form, but there's not a whole lot to say right now anyway.]
no subject
Bucky very nearly drives his knife towards the bear before he realises who it really is, and even then he keeps the weapon ready for if Taako suddenly forgets who's side he's on and who he is under bear instincts.
It makes him slower and sloppier at killing the lizards. Not that slow or sloppy, he is still a trained assassin, but the bear probably kills more of them before there's nothing but corpses littered around them.
Bucky takes up a wary stance in a pool of slippery blood, stained knife held outwards.]
Change back.
no subject
And then he stands up and he's Taako again, all the scratches and bites he'd gained while in the bear form disappearing, because that's how magic works, so long as he hadn't passed out.]
I wasn't gonna eat you, jeez.
no subject
Why didn't you do that from the start?
[It's the question he chooses to go with because he has a strong suspicion that anything similar to 'how did you do that?' will be answered with 'magic'.]
