carnivale

In the days leading up to July 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Carnivale. This holiday is in celebration of music, and the onset of summer and warmer weather. The celebrations are marked by street parties, an extensive program of live musical performances, with a large parade (and paid holiday!) capping it off on July 8th.

After a couple of months of low-key or even solemn celebrations, it's time for Riverview Quarantine to throw a good, old-fashioned party. Carnivale is a city-wide festival that pretty much everyone gets into, and many residents take the entire week off so they can enjoy all the festivities. With events ranging from impromptu street parties, free live musical performances, food stands, themed club nights, adult lounges with kink shows, and topped off with a massive party parade, the holiday has a lot to offer for anyone who likes to sing, dance, and show some skin!

i. street parties and food

One of the staples of the Carnivale festival is the spontaneous street parties and food trucks and carts. It's not unusual during the holiday to turn a corner and run into a group of people dressed in bright colors and sequins having an impromptu party with a few drinks, and then be invited to join right in! Carnivale is a celebration of music as well as summer, so most shops and stalls will be blasting danceable music into the streets to facilitate these little street parties - it's considered a sign of good luck for the owner of a business if an impromptu Carnivale celebration starts up in front of their door.

Considering the proliferation of street parties and people out and about to celebrate the warmer weather, local business owners also take to the streets. Food carts, stands, and trucks pop up on almost every street corner offering a wide variety of food from savory treats to sweet desserts. Many of the carts are offering one free item to anyone dressed up for Carnivale - anything shimmery, shiny, or brightly colored will do!

ii. live musical performances

One of the major roads in the city center has been completely roped off for the entire week, and all along this street, various temporary stages have been set up, each with a nice hefty sound system. Volunteers hand out printed flyers, and digital boards are set up here and there with schedules of various performances that are all free to attend, ranging from well-known popular music artists to new up-and-comers or independent artists who are looking to make a name for themselves. This event is very widely advertised around the city, and is accepting entries until the very last minute.

At couple of the acts might be familiar faces to some of the residents.

Eichi Tenshouin has signed up himself and his friend Tsumugi Aoba into the music festival as a first-time appearing idol unit called "Higanbana." Dressed in all white with splashes of color (blue, largely, with only their headsets being a red spider lily), they carry a very commanding and angelic image together. They'll have a routine that emphasizes their great harmony with each other, taking turns doing solo lines and joining together to show off each of their talents. Singing and dancing, they interact heavily with the audience and will encourage a lot of involvement with speaking between songs and gestures, winks, and so on. Basically, they intend to make this Riverview's very first prominent "idol performance".

For his performance, Otabek Altin will start with rock remixes of a few popular pop songs. He wants to make sure that it starts off with recognizable pieces for some people, and he certainly thinks it is something that could get people excited even if they don't know it. Then, it shifts into a few original songs. They are upbeat, rock songs that he put together with the intention to make people dance and move, since he is a DJ. He'll end his set with a slower piece he put together that is also an original. Through the entire performance, he's focused and quiet, though he may occasionally try and excite the crowd with a few words.

Any other player-characters who are musically inclined are more than welcome to assume their character was fit in for a performance, and can post up a top-level with a rundown of their performance to get bonus Activity Points for posting a mingle!

iii. carnivale parade

The other main attraction of Carnivale week comes on July 8th, which is a paid holiday for everyone in the city. The Carnivale Parade will be starting out by City Hall and winding through downtown in a lazy pattern so everyone in the city has a chance to see it. There will be all sorts of floats, dancers, marching bands, with all sorts of clubs, businesses, and other organizations represented. The theme is theatrical, big and showy, bright and colorful, sparkly and shiny, with loud music and lots of glitz and glamour. Observers can expect great music, excellent dancing and marching shows, neat vehicles provided by classic car clubs, the fire, police, and Perimeter Guard. They can also expect a lot of party favors, whether it's a sparkly plastic beaded necklace, a fan to take the edge off the heat, candy, popsicles, a temporary tattoo, or any number of other little treats or toys to be tossed into the crowd - some of them fit for kids and teens, others of a more 'adult' nature handed out a bit more discreetly to anyone who looks the part.

And make sure you wear your waterproof mascara - Carnivale floats have a tendency of spraying or spritzing water, both in an unspoken competition to see who can make the biggest water-refraction rainbow in the air, and to keep observers cool in the new summer heat.

iv. adult: lounges and kink exhibition

Thanks to the Carnivale tradition of showing as much skin as possible, some event organizers' minds have turned to topics of a more adult nature. In the evenings, residents may see clubs doing "lounge nights"; these adults-only events have bouncers IDing everyone at the door to ensure they're 18+. The themes may vary, from very specific niche themes like 'golden age superheroes' to broad themes like 'rainbows,' and each event is clearly marked as what it is - all-nude or clothing-optional, and can host events ranging from amateur to professional exotic dancing, food served off of nude bodies, anonymous masked hookups, or just provide a comfortable space where casual sex is encouraged with whoever happens to be around. Various legal substances can be found at these lounges, but nothing that would cause violation of consent, and every substance would be clearly labeled and have warnings to ensure that no one partakes unless they choose to. Please be sure to warn in the subject line for sexual content or drug use (since some mild party drugs are legal in Riverview).

For the weekend from July 7th-9th, there will be a kink exhibition in one of the large exhibition centers downtown, limited to characters 18+. The exhibition is a sexy adult informational convention featuring various kinks and fetishes. Whether you're into leather, latex, lace, or anything else, you'll be able to find the clothes, toys, guides, books, erotica, fiction, and a wide variety of other interesting stuff to explore. While the atmosphere is sex-positive and there are private and public (for the voyeurs and exhibitionists in the room) venues for having sex, it's definitely focused on exploration and information about different stuff to try.

We could look for something. [Yuffie snickers. The fact that Frank isn't good at saying what he means is adorable and Yuffie is having way to much fun with it.]

You don't have magic or materia where you're from? That's so sad. [And she means it. Materia is not only the coolest thing ever: it's shiny, expensive and pretty. Yuffie might have a small problem when it comes to her materia obsession.]

YEAH! If we go out there I can show you some magic too. I am pretty awesome. [The waiter returns again. Putting a pause in their conversation as he places town plates down on the table. Each one has a burger as well as a heaping mound of fries. Yuffie pops one into her mouth and then makes a face.] HOT! [But also salty and delicious and wonderful.

She swallows and then continues as if there hasn't been a break in the conversation.] I joined the perimeter guard and do surveying crap around the wall. If you want someone to go out there with you I'm probably a good bet. [And then Yuffie might be able to get a vehicle! Or ride in one. It's an exciting but also stomach turning prospect.]

[ He'll just scowl at the floor while she laughs. What? He can't exactly get mad at *her* because he sounded like an idiot. Just, for the record, he doesn't think anyone's considered him 'adorable', like, ever. ]

If we had magic, the Chairman would probably keep it all to himself.

[Probably hid it under his stupid hair.]

So. [Thank someone for the interruption by the arrival of food. He hadn't realized how hungry he was. ]

[He doesn't doubt her. Just been a long time since he felt, you know, inadequate.]

Most people try to and those people are the buttheads I usually end up trying to kill.

[She puts it candidly since he'd already mentioned people wanting him dead. Clearly he's used to those sort of thing.] That's why I said I'd only try to kill you if you were a butthead. [Yuffie is pretty sure she said something to that effect.]

That sums it up pretty well but you missed the word's: ninja, beautiful and awesome in there.

[Yuffie picks up her burger and digs in. Juicy meat, crisp lettuce and perfectly ripe tomatoes with the salty cheesy compliment: it's so good.]

[Eyetwitch as he's imagining her vs the Chairman. The Chairman wouldn't stand a chance. It would be a hell of a show, though.]

He'd deserve it.

[And more. Can she kill him more than once? Is that possible?]

Right. [He apparently stands corrected. Give him a second to try to string them all together.] Awesome beautiful magical ninja princess.

[Words Frankenstein never thought he'd say, ever. He's not sure his face is going to survive.]

[If Yuffie has a phoenix down her on then she can totally kill The Chairman twice and would gladly do so if she knew all of the shit he's done. Yuffie is rather judgement of those in a seat of power. It comes with being a princess. She's been taught that you rule over people a certain way, doing things to help them, not yourself.

She licks the burgers juices off her fingers as she watches Frank.]

Yes! [Yuffie flashes him a grin before popping another fry in her mouth.]

Rolls pretty well off the tongue too.

You like the food? Because I am definitely coming back here sometime.

[If she ever gets to meet (and kill) the Chairman, Frankenstein wants to watch.

Wait. That sounds kinky.

Fuck, it probably is. He'll take it.

Meanwhile, right. Food. He should eat. He's a bit wary of the burger. Most of the stuff he eats back home is white bread and chemicals and this looks like...neither of those. So don't mind him side-eyeing it for a moment before he takes a bite.

And give him a minute here. He might be dying of deliciousness.

Okay, wait, he's back. Probably talking with his mouth full. Sorry, princess. ]

Guess I'm going to have to practice saying it more.

[Wait, is he flirting or admitting he's bad at words? WHO KNOWS?]

[Killing someone can totally be a date activity.

Yuffie watches Frank as he eats. It's really fun to watch his expression as it shifts from caution, to resign and then to what Yuffie can only describe as amazement. She laughs softly and then pops another fry in her mouth.]

[ Wait till he gets a car, if she wants good date activities.

She better not be laughing at him.

Okay, so she probably is. Not really much he can do about it. And besides, he's not done eating. And he's not SO much of an idiot that he's going to get upset about a pretty woman being happy in his vicinity. ]

[Yuffie doesn't always eat nice meals. They were a little to expensive and she's trying to give up the whole thieving thing.]

I get what I can since I travel a lot. Not really the sort of thing where you have time to sit and eat. Not like this place. [She has an abundance of time and she really isn't sure what to do with that.]

My favorite food is steamed buns.

Hnh. Yeah. Me too.

I haven't seen them but I'm on the look out.

[She has amazing memories of sneaking into the kitchen to steal steamed buns before dinner. Her father had always been furious with her because she was usually skipping lessons in order to go on her fantastic steamed bun heists.]

They usually have pork or other meat inside and are a little bit salty. They're also surrounded in a white super fluffy outside that's absolutely amazing.

[Yuffie is full of her hamburger but talking about it makes her hungry.

She can eat a lot.]

Anything's better than food back home.

[And he ate better than most. Still, you got tired of white bread. ]

You can look out for them when you do....whatever we're supposed to be doing here.

[He somehow strongly suspects that 'stuffing their faces' wasn't why their hosts had brought them here. At least he hoped not. It would really make him worry about mystery meat.]

[Yuffie licks the salt from her thumb as she looks up at him. He's said a little bit about his home though most of what she's picked up has been through inference.]

Why did the food where you're from suck? No good cooks or no good food. [She phrases it in an innocent way before flashing him a grin.]

Oh, I don't plan to give up looking for them. [If she can't find dumplings she'll ask a place to start making them. Yuffie isn't above being loud and pushy to get her way. Not that it always works.]

I'm pretty sure we're here to repopulate or some such nonsense. I'm honestly just along for the ride and looking around. [There isn't a need to stress about it, or so Yuffie thinks.]

Famine. Mostly white bread and artificial cheese pharmaceuticals.

[And that's the good stuff. Bland chemicals.

He may just about choke on the next bite of burger.]

Repopulate.

[That sounds like...wow, more than he's signed up for. ]

That sounds gross. I'm glad they have better food here.

[Just saying.]

Yeah. I'm pretty sure that's what they're doing but I wouldn't worry about it. It's not like they can make you hit up everyone.

[Yuffie is very practiced in doing things she's not supposed to do.]

You get used to it.

[By which he meant, you didn't eat because you enjoyed it. Not like this.

But oh. HELL. No. ]

They can't make me do anything.

[Yuffie is finished with her fries and has begun to slowly steal his while he's finishing his burger.]

I ate burnt food for a year. [She'd been 13 then and learning how to survive in the forest so that she could loot people and return Wutai to it's former glory. It hadn't exactly happened that way but she'd learned how to cook over an open fire.]

That's the spirit!

Don't worry. I don't think they'll force you. They seem weirdly chill here. [She's forming a few theories in her head.]

I can't imagine a princess eating burnt anything.

[ Hey. He spots the fry thievery, but since she's the one who knows what this food is, he's not really going to complain. ]

They might seem that way. Now.

We'll see how long it lasts.

[Optimism. Clearly that's what chicks dig. ]

I eat a lot of things.

[She winks before stealing another fry and making a show of eating it.]

You know my rule, if they become butt-heads we just take them down a notch or two.

[Yuffie is always optimistic.]

[He has no idea how to take that wink. Was she flirting with him? About eating things? In certain parts of the UCA that could be an invitation to cannibalism or something.]

You seem pretty sure of your ability to take on an entire system by yourself.

[Flirting yes. Cannibalism is a weird stretch though.]

I've done it once before. [Her and at least 6 other people but details.]

Took on ShinRa and beat them up pretty good.

[His world isn't, you know, well-adjusted. ]

It was an organization and I'm pretty sure they wanted to take over the planet.

[Yuffie puffs up her cheeks and then realizes that this is his plate and his food and she can't really get mad at him for eating his own food.]

Yeah. [She agrees though there is less enthusiasm in her voice.] First of all, I'd just ninja a room. Second, what do you suggest?
