carnivale

In the days leading up to July 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Carnivale. This holiday is in celebration of music, and the onset of summer and warmer weather. The celebrations are marked by street parties, an extensive program of live musical performances, with a large parade (and paid holiday!) capping it off on July 8th.

After a couple of months of low-key or even solemn celebrations, it's time for Riverview Quarantine to throw a good, old-fashioned party. Carnivale is a city-wide festival that pretty much everyone gets into, and many residents take the entire week off so they can enjoy all the festivities. With events ranging from impromptu street parties, free live musical performances, food stands, themed club nights, adult lounges with kink shows, and topped off with a massive party parade, the holiday has a lot to offer for anyone who likes to sing, dance, and show some skin!

i. street parties and food

One of the staples of the Carnivale festival is the spontaneous street parties and food trucks and carts. It's not unusual during the holiday to turn a corner and run into a group of people dressed in bright colors and sequins having an impromptu party with a few drinks, and then be invited to join right in! Carnivale is a celebration of music as well as summer, so most shops and stalls will be blasting danceable music into the streets to facilitate these little street parties - it's considered a sign of good luck for the owner of a business if an impromptu Carnivale celebration starts up in front of their door.

Considering the proliferation of street parties and people out and about to celebrate the warmer weather, local business owners also take to the streets. Food carts, stands, and trucks pop up on almost every street corner offering a wide variety of food from savory treats to sweet desserts. Many of the carts are offering one free item to anyone dressed up for Carnivale - anything shimmery, shiny, or brightly colored will do!

ii. live musical performances

One of the major roads in the city center has been completely roped off for the entire week, and all along this street, various temporary stages have been set up, each with a nice hefty sound system. Volunteers hand out printed flyers, and digital boards are set up here and there with schedules of various performances that are all free to attend, ranging from well-known popular music artists to new up-and-comers or independent artists who are looking to make a name for themselves. This event is very widely advertised around the city, and is accepting entries until the very last minute.

At couple of the acts might be familiar faces to some of the residents.

Eichi Tenshouin has signed up himself and his friend Tsumugi Aoba into the music festival as a first-time appearing idol unit called "Higanbana." Dressed in all white with splashes of color (blue, largely, with only their headsets being a red spider lily), they carry a very commanding and angelic image together. They'll have a routine that emphasizes their great harmony with each other, taking turns doing solo lines and joining together to show off each of their talents. Singing and dancing, they interact heavily with the audience and will encourage a lot of involvement with speaking between songs and gestures, winks, and so on. Basically, they intend to make this Riverview's very first prominent "idol performance".

For his performance, Otabek Altin will start with rock remixes of a few popular pop songs. He wants to make sure that it starts off with recognizable pieces for some people, and he certainly thinks it is something that could get people excited even if they don't know it. Then, it shifts into a few original songs. They are upbeat, rock songs that he put together with the intention to make people dance and move, since he is a DJ. He'll end his set with a slower piece he put together that is also an original. Through the entire performance, he's focused and quiet, though he may occasionally try and excite the crowd with a few words.

Any other player-characters who are musically inclined are more than welcome to assume their character was fit in for a performance, and can post up a top-level with a rundown of their performance to get bonus Activity Points for posting a mingle!

iii. carnivale parade

The other main attraction of Carnivale week comes on July 8th, which is a paid holiday for everyone in the city. The Carnivale Parade will be starting out by City Hall and winding through downtown in a lazy pattern so everyone in the city has a chance to see it. There will be all sorts of floats, dancers, marching bands, with all sorts of clubs, businesses, and other organizations represented. The theme is theatrical, big and showy, bright and colorful, sparkly and shiny, with loud music and lots of glitz and glamour. Observers can expect great music, excellent dancing and marching shows, neat vehicles provided by classic car clubs, the fire, police, and Perimeter Guard. They can also expect a lot of party favors, whether it's a sparkly plastic beaded necklace, a fan to take the edge off the heat, candy, popsicles, a temporary tattoo, or any number of other little treats or toys to be tossed into the crowd - some of them fit for kids and teens, others of a more 'adult' nature handed out a bit more discreetly to anyone who looks the part.

And make sure you wear your waterproof mascara - Carnivale floats have a tendency of spraying or spritzing water, both in an unspoken competition to see who can make the biggest water-refraction rainbow in the air, and to keep observers cool in the new summer heat.

iv. adult: lounges and kink exhibition

Thanks to the Carnivale tradition of showing as much skin as possible, some event organizers' minds have turned to topics of a more adult nature. In the evenings, residents may see clubs doing "lounge nights"; these adults-only events have bouncers IDing everyone at the door to ensure they're 18+. The themes may vary, from very specific niche themes like 'golden age superheroes' to broad themes like 'rainbows,' and each event is clearly marked as what it is - all-nude or clothing-optional, and can host events ranging from amateur to professional exotic dancing, food served off of nude bodies, anonymous masked hookups, or just provide a comfortable space where casual sex is encouraged with whoever happens to be around. Various legal substances can be found at these lounges, but nothing that would cause violation of consent, and every substance would be clearly labeled and have warnings to ensure that no one partakes unless they choose to. Please be sure to warn in the subject line for sexual content or drug use (since some mild party drugs are legal in Riverview).

For the weekend from July 7th-9th, there will be a kink exhibition in one of the large exhibition centers downtown, limited to characters 18+. The exhibition is a sexy adult informational convention featuring various kinks and fetishes. Whether you're into leather, latex, lace, or anything else, you'll be able to find the clothes, toys, guides, books, erotica, fiction, and a wide variety of other interesting stuff to explore. While the atmosphere is sex-positive and there are private and public (for the voyeurs and exhibitionists in the room) venues for having sex, it's definitely focused on exploration and information about different stuff to try.

i. street parties and food:

[ While nothing continued to make sense for Steve, he wanted to try and attempt to mingle around more. How could he figure anything out if he stayed away from where most of the crowds were? No one seemed to care about his image in the very least and it nearly relieved him but also unsettled him at the same time. Moving through the crowds, Steve eventually ended up at a promising looking food cart, decked out in all kinds of shiny and glittery things. People kept passing them off to him and he didn't want to be rude. ]

It seems like people are really friendly. I think I might shine brighter than anything else around here now.

[ He gave a grin. ]

What should I try first, you think?

iii. carnivale parade:

[ By the time the parade rolled around, Steve had relaxed somewhat but not too much just in case. Rather than shiny things, he decked himself out in temporary tattoos and something glittery in his hair. Again, with the not being able to stay no thanks. But when it seemed someone wanted to dance, he quickly found a way to shake his head. ]

No, no - thanks - but I'm not the best dancer. You don't want to endure that.

v. roommates:

[ Sharing such close quarters reminded Steve a lot of his time in the army but he tried to keep the thoughts from closing in too much around him. Sighing deeply, he tried to figure out the coffee machine to make a pot. It would help him meet those on his floor, hopefully and make a good impression. His awkwardness never helped him much there but he wanted to try to do things a little differently than he did the first time he woke up in a strange place. ]

No one's this friendly unless they've got a motive.

[Annie was friendly to him...then tried to kill him. Twice. Trust issues? Maybe, but at least they're earned. ]

I'd make sure whatever it was wasn't dog meat.

[Someone here, messing with his mind about the food. See? Trust issues, again.]

[ Looking over, Steve frowned slightly at the negative outlook. Pleasant.

But the dog meat comment made him pause from popping the meatball into his mouth. Oh. ]

Do they eat dog here? [ He really needed to find out more about the place he found himself in. ] Or are you just not going to eat anything while we are here?

[Not negative. Just realistic. ]

Not sure. Someone told me it was.

[And then told him it was a joke but, yeah, err on the side of NOPE.]

I'm still trying to work that out myself. [Suddenly cricketmeal doesn't seem so bad.]

[ Someone probably wanted to make him paranoid but Steve decided against voicing such thoughts out loud. The guy would figure things out one way or another, even without his commentary on the fact.

Eyes moving around, he found a cart selling what looked like vegetables. ]

Maybe we can try something that doesn't look like meat. Might be safer.

[It took decades to make Frankenstein this paranoid. Decades, and a copilot who tried to kill him (twice). ]

I don't know what half that stuff is.

[Or why we're a 'we' apparently. But he'll roll with it.]

Like they say - nothing ventured, nothing gained.

[ With a lopsided grin, he walked over to one of the carts and decided to try a free sample of what looked like a candied yam. He offered a part of it to the other guy. ]

Here goes nothing!

Where the hell did they dig you up from, anyway?

[Frankenstein's going to lag back for a bit, because this guy is too much. Like, unreal. Like Frankenstein would believe in a unicorn faster than someone THIS naive.

He takes the...whatever this orange thing is, but he's gonna wait before he bites into it for a moment. ]

Tastes...weird.

[ Not the friendliest person by far but Steve dealt with far worse in the past. ]

Unfroze actually and you'll find that mingling around offers you far more information and culture than acting like something is going to end you at any moment. You make more mistakes when you're paranoid and expecting trouble.

[ See, Steve, you say that... but then this asshole walks over with a veritable collection. Tons of necklaces, bracelets, a glitter-glued paper hat, all over the super casual outfit of a t-shirt and jeans. Cain just laughs at the comment and shrugs, all of his extra pieces jingling like hollow plastic at the movement. ]

Ever had funnel cake before? I know that one, it's best place to start.

[ No, it's... not... really. ]

[ Eyes widened for a fraction of a second as he took in the man approaching him. The guy nearly looked like a disco ball Natasha showed him once during their 'this is the culture you missed' education. Lopsided smile filling his face, he nodded his head a little. ]

Once at a fair but then I threw it up on a ride. [ The mere thought of the memory made his heart clench tightly in his chest. Bucky. ]

But let's see what happens this time. Lead the way. I'm Steve, by the way.

[ Cain sees you eyeing his bling, Steve, and he doesn't hesitate to lift a few of the necklaces and his brows at the same time. Want some? One? Any? C'mon. ]

Oh good, probably from Earth, then. I'm Jacob.

[ That said, he's heading down to where he saw a traditional carnival foods stall. Maybe a corndog on the way would be good, too. ]

[ With a slight laugh, he shook his head. He is more than content with his state of sparkle at the moment, thank you. ]

Nice to meet you, Jacob. I am from Earth even if it doesn't seem like it sometimes. Are you?

[ Following after the guy, he tried to not lose him in the crowd of people all intent to bump and grind on everyone it seemed. No, no, no. ]

[ Steve's loss, really. Cain is pretty off the chain right now, and he's been picking up freebies all day for his glam. ]

Yeah, an Earth. Considering the actual statistics, this place sure has a lot of earthlings here. So far I haven't met anyone else from mine that I can tell.

[ They arrived at the stand with Steve trying to determine if the food would be eatable or not. ]

What's your Earth like?

Well... from what I've been reading, compared to the "standard" kind of Earths, it's kind of... death-oriented?

[ Cain screws up his face because that sounds weird and he obviously knows it. ]

Rather it's harder to deny the effect it has when people get to say goodbye after they pass if they cooperate with the Reapers. That's something I haven't seen any records mention elsewhere.

[ Death oriented? He gave the guy a look as he reached for two funnel cakes, passing one off and keeping the other for himself to try. He only hoped he wouldn't throw up this time around! Fair rides had been involved last time, though. ]

What are the reapers? How exactly is it death oriented? [ He questioned too many things on a normal basis. ]

[Of all the people that he has to run into while he's trying to get home, it has to be Steve? He doesn't see the man until he's almost on top of him, which is ridiculous considering how huge and blond he is, and nearly steps on some poor lady behind him as he stops abruptly.]

[The question is quiet, out before he can bite the words back and just retreat.]

[ Pure happiness filled Steve's face at the sight of Bucky and some of the tension seeped right away from the line of his shoulders. What he wouldn't give to hug Bucky and to reassure them both of everything being better this time around. .

Could he ever make such a promise, though? ]

Worse now. You were always the dancer between us. [ Add in fondness to the happiness on his face. ] But, I mean, if you want to try.

[ Under no circumstance did he honestly believe Bucky would dance with him. ]

[It hurts to see that naked happiness, because it just drives home the guilt that he's not who Steve needs him to be yet. Maybe not ever. It almost has him walking away there and then, but he's at least got better at that.

So he shakes his head.]

I don't remember how to dance.

[It's something that Clark has been trying to help with too.]

[ Things were a challenge between them but Steve thrived on beating the odds. Plus, there would never could a time he would give up on Bucky. Too many people wanted him to be something but Steve only wanted him to be okay. Whether that involved in much or not didn't really matter in the end. It would hurt, yes, but he'd understand. ]

I could try to show you if you want. I can't promise it'd be good but I haven't really tried much lately. Might be better now than I think.

[He really doesn't think that dancing with Steve is something that's going to happen, though it does tickle a tiny fragment of memory free of trying to teach Steve to dance back when he weighed ninety pounds.]

[Sorry, Steve. Refusal meted out, he abruptly changes the subject.]

What's the last thing you remember from home?

[ it's okay, Steve never really thought Bucky would dance with him, not now and not really ever. just having the other man remember him at all mattered the most.

nodding his head, he tried to not let the flicker of disappointment show on his face. ]

It's not really a happy memory. [ a frown tugged at his lips for a moment. ] What about you? What's the last thing you remember?

I didn't ask if it was happy, I asked what it was.

[He pointedly ignored the return question until he gets an answer of his own. He wants to place where Steve is, to find out if he's also from the future-- or, rather, a potential future.]

[ He rolled his eyes as his hands settled onto his hips. The abrupt manner didn't surprise him, though, he remembered the disjointed manner Bucky had before he adjusted more to being out from under HYDRA'S thumb. ]

Hearing the debate about the Accords and getting a text about Peggy.
