carnivale

In the days leading up to July 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Carnivale. This holiday is in celebration of music, and the onset of summer and warmer weather. The celebrations are marked by street parties, an extensive program of live musical performances, with a large parade (and paid holiday!) capping it off on July 8th.

After a couple of months of low-key or even solemn celebrations, it's time for Riverview Quarantine to throw a good, old-fashioned party. Carnivale is a city-wide festival that pretty much everyone gets into, and many residents take the entire week off so they can enjoy all the festivities. With events ranging from impromptu street parties, free live musical performances, food stands, themed club nights, adult lounges with kink shows, and topped off with a massive party parade, the holiday has a lot to offer for anyone who likes to sing, dance, and show some skin!

i. street parties and food

One of the staples of the Carnivale festival is the spontaneous street parties and food trucks and carts. It's not unusual during the holiday to turn a corner and run into a group of people dressed in bright colors and sequins having an impromptu party with a few drinks, and then be invited to join right in! Carnivale is a celebration of music as well as summer, so most shops and stalls will be blasting danceable music into the streets to facilitate these little street parties - it's considered a sign of good luck for the owner of a business if an impromptu Carnivale celebration starts up in front of their door.

Considering the proliferation of street parties and people out and about to celebrate the warmer weather, local business owners also take to the streets. Food carts, stands, and trucks pop up on almost every street corner offering a wide variety of food from savory treats to sweet desserts. Many of the carts are offering one free item to anyone dressed up for Carnivale - anything shimmery, shiny, or brightly colored will do!

ii. live musical performances

One of the major roads in the city center has been completely roped off for the entire week, and all along this street, various temporary stages have been set up, each with a nice hefty sound system. Volunteers hand out printed flyers, and digital boards are set up here and there with schedules of various performances that are all free to attend, ranging from well-known popular music artists to new up-and-comers or independent artists who are looking to make a name for themselves. This event is very widely advertised around the city, and is accepting entries until the very last minute.

At couple of the acts might be familiar faces to some of the residents.

Eichi Tenshouin has signed up himself and his friend Tsumugi Aoba into the music festival as a first-time appearing idol unit called "Higanbana." Dressed in all white with splashes of color (blue, largely, with only their headsets being a red spider lily), they carry a very commanding and angelic image together. They'll have a routine that emphasizes their great harmony with each other, taking turns doing solo lines and joining together to show off each of their talents. Singing and dancing, they interact heavily with the audience and will encourage a lot of involvement with speaking between songs and gestures, winks, and so on. Basically, they intend to make this Riverview's very first prominent "idol performance".

For his performance, Otabek Altin will start with rock remixes of a few popular pop songs. He wants to make sure that it starts off with recognizable pieces for some people, and he certainly thinks it is something that could get people excited even if they don't know it. Then, it shifts into a few original songs. They are upbeat, rock songs that he put together with the intention to make people dance and move, since he is a DJ. He'll end his set with a slower piece he put together that is also an original. Through the entire performance, he's focused and quiet, though he may occasionally try and excite the crowd with a few words.

Any other player-characters who are musically inclined are more than welcome to assume their character was fit in for a performance, and can post up a top-level with a rundown of their performance to get bonus Activity Points for posting a mingle!

iii. carnivale parade

The other main attraction of Carnivale week comes on July 8th, which is a paid holiday for everyone in the city. The Carnivale Parade will be starting out by City Hall and winding through downtown in a lazy pattern so everyone in the city has a chance to see it. There will be all sorts of floats, dancers, marching bands, with all sorts of clubs, businesses, and other organizations represented. The theme is theatrical, big and showy, bright and colorful, sparkly and shiny, with loud music and lots of glitz and glamour. Observers can expect great music, excellent dancing and marching shows, neat vehicles provided by classic car clubs, the fire, police, and Perimeter Guard. They can also expect a lot of party favors, whether it's a sparkly plastic beaded necklace, a fan to take the edge off the heat, candy, popsicles, a temporary tattoo, or any number of other little treats or toys to be tossed into the crowd - some of them fit for kids and teens, others of a more 'adult' nature handed out a bit more discreetly to anyone who looks the part.

And make sure you wear your waterproof mascara - Carnivale floats have a tendency of spraying or spritzing water, both in an unspoken competition to see who can make the biggest water-refraction rainbow in the air, and to keep observers cool in the new summer heat.

iv. adult: lounges and kink exhibition

Thanks to the Carnivale tradition of showing as much skin as possible, some event organizers' minds have turned to topics of a more adult nature. In the evenings, residents may see clubs doing "lounge nights"; these adults-only events have bouncers IDing everyone at the door to ensure they're 18+. The themes may vary, from very specific niche themes like 'golden age superheroes' to broad themes like 'rainbows,' and each event is clearly marked as what it is - all-nude or clothing-optional, and can host events ranging from amateur to professional exotic dancing, food served off of nude bodies, anonymous masked hookups, or just provide a comfortable space where casual sex is encouraged with whoever happens to be around. Various legal substances can be found at these lounges, but nothing that would cause violation of consent, and every substance would be clearly labeled and have warnings to ensure that no one partakes unless they choose to. Please be sure to warn in the subject line for sexual content or drug use (since some mild party drugs are legal in Riverview).

For the weekend from July 7th-9th, there will be a kink exhibition in one of the large exhibition centers downtown, limited to characters 18+. The exhibition is a sexy adult informational convention featuring various kinks and fetishes. Whether you're into leather, latex, lace, or anything else, you'll be able to find the clothes, toys, guides, books, erotica, fiction, and a wide variety of other interesting stuff to explore. While the atmosphere is sex-positive and there are private and public (for the voyeurs and exhibitionists in the room) venues for having sex, it's definitely focused on exploration and information about different stuff to try.

[ That gets a brief smile and he shrugs. Talking about Abel and his own problems seems dishonest to his brother somehow. Much as he appreciates the offer, it's... personal. ]

Yeah... There's just a lot of complicated there, too, so I'd have to actually put it in order first.

[ Frankenstein was walking by, kind of in a daze. So many people, and so much...stuff. Brightly colored stuff. Stuff he didn't even know what it was for, and stuff he didn't WANT to know what it was for.

But lingerie? He's seen that stuff before. At least, some of it. A bunch of it, lying on the table, seems like a bunch of frilly straps, and he had no idea how it was supposed to actually go on a human body.

Oh! [ Dang, she should have gone with her gut. And... the latter statement gets SUCH a look. That sort of '... he's gotta be pulling my leg, but this place is pretty strange so he might be telling the truth' kind of look. ]

[ He doesn't LOOK like a space alien, but...what does a space alien look like? ]

[Some people actually have the charisma to make first meetings go smoothly. Wikus is not one of those people.]

Oh, I think- wow, three months now? Kind of feels like- [He pauses for a moment as his mind blanks on the Prawn word for 'forever'. Second languages are hard, especially when you've only been physically able to speak one for less than a month.] -uh, a lot longer.

Nah, I wouldn't call a vampire immortal. We die. I've killed a fair few myself. In fact, when you look at it, we die pretty bloody easily. We just can live longer. No expiration date, so to speak.

Never mind. I'd like to avoid whatever punishment this place would have for talking lewdly to a minor.

Frankenstein is great at getting on people's nerves. It's why he doesn't understand how he has fans.

And he was going to show even more of his winning personality, until she makes that copilot crack. Ouch. Might as well have just punched him in the gut. "Yeah, I know. But people surprise you sometimes." Being let down by people is not the surprise, obviously.

Here's the thing, though. "If you go out there, and don't come back, a lot of people will come looking for you. Some of whom might be your friends. Who could get hurt." See? Logic. "Or, you could just endanger me." Simple choice.

[Unfortunately, despite having Thor as roommate, Wikus doesn't know anything about Loki.

His face goes through an array of expressions ranging from bewildered to annoyed before settling on a flat look of disapproval.]

I changed my mind, I think I'll have that.

[He's pretty sure there isn't a Prawn word for cotton candy, so he just gestures at it instead.]

Doesn’t it? That’s what I learned from TV.

[ That’s a load of bullshit, but Alec will never turn down the opportunity to screw with someone. ]

[Bucky doesn't do a whole lot of socialising, but at least he's used to the streets being full of party goers by now, this is at least the third big celebration that's happened since he arrived and it's not longer a cause for immediate concern when the streets become filled with people.

He glances around as he hears someone speak, mistakenly thinking he's the one being addressed.]

It's octopus.

[Isn't that obvious, stranger guy?]

[Bucky isn't taking part in the festivities, so much as he's just trying to get back to where he's calling home at the moment. There's not a lot of streets that aren't full so, even though it makes the back of his neck prickle, he's threading his way through the revellers carefully.

He feels a jostle at his elbow and glances around, only to find himself face to face with Tony Stark of all people, offering him what looks like a necklace of beads.]

Not my colour either.

[Of all the people that he has to run into while he's trying to get home, it has to be Steve? He doesn't see the man until he's almost on top of him, which is ridiculous considering how huge and blond he is, and nearly steps on some poor lady behind him as he stops abruptly.]

Still two left feet?

[The question is quiet, out before he can bite the words back and just retreat.]

[ Alec can count on one hand the number of times someone has actually looked happy to see him, the majority of which happened before he was like, ten years old, so the look on this woman’s face pretty quickly throws him for a loop.

It doesn’t help that he’s seriously lacking some context, because he has no idea what that question is supposed to mean. ]

Sorry, what happened to my what now?

[ He very likely doesn’t sound like she’s expecting him to, being a native of Chicago and all. ]

Drew just blinks a couple of times when she comes out with that particular situation. "Uh... I'm pretty sure the kinda rope they're sellin' ain't the kind you're meant to use to dangle people over a rockface." He scratches his head. "Like... it ain't bondage for tyin' people up in any kinda way that ain't consensual."

Because wow that was quite a reaction to the kinky window setting in front of them. "But uh, if you're more interested in gettin' in an' outta the rope I guess that's the kinda thing y'gotta practise. Y'wouldn't be able to tie me up in it anyway so I'm the wrong guy to start askin'... I was more interested in those." He points to a set of manacles and chains further back in the display.

"Yeah! That's me. You're Kate, huh?" He grins openly at her, pleased to be seeing a familiar-ish face so soon after his arrival in the city.

He gestures with her to the plate. "Maybe not... y'want some?" Because at the end of the day he was a pack animal and those were known for their ways when it came to sharing food. Besides, his eyes were probably a little big for his belly to begin with.

Didn't Ed know that food tasted better when it didn't technically belong to you? Yuffie was trying to curb her desire to take things that didn't belong to her but some habits were harder to kick than others. Since it was a half eaten skewer of meat, Yuffie considered the crime rather innocent.

At least she didn't steal all his stuff and left him in a monster ridden forest.

A knowing grin settled across her features as she eyed the blush creeping across Ed's cheeks. She found a small crack in his grumpiness. "Oh? Why do you doubt it? You're pretty cute and you have good taste in snacks." She spoke as she licked the juice from her fingers.

Yuffie ate quickly and often.

Yuffie's head turned towards where he pointed. She didn't see anything wrong with what she had said but then her world was very different from most and her view of the world was very skewed. "Oh? Those look easier to get out of." Metal wasn't as bad as rope but then Yuffie hadn't really tried.

She skirted around Drew to take a closer look at the chains, only glancing back at Drew to imagine him held down by them. "You'd look good in chains. But if the idea is the same then why do you prefer chains?"

Yuffie was perhaps to curious.

[ Alec is just watching. He hasn’t been much for participating in the festivities, but it’s a good chance to do some people watching. So far, it’s proven quite the enlightening experience, and by some miracle he’s managed to void getting drenched or covered in glitter, so hey, win-win.

He can tell by the look on this guy’s face as he approaches that he’s going to want to talk to him, and Alec has to throttle down the desire to wink out of existence and walk away. Observing will only get him so far, and he does need to talk to some of these people.

An invitation to dance is sure as hell not what he expected. ]

Yeah, no. I’m not a dancer.

"Yeah." Kate laughed softly before reaching for the top most item on the plate. It looked like a skewer with some sort of meat on it. "Thank you," She took a bite and smiled as the savory flavor filled her mouth. Her fingers rose to cover her lips as she chewed and then dropped back down to her side.

"It's good." She hadn't had that much of the food here yet. "Are you going to try a bit of everything?" It sounded like a hefty goal.

[Bellamy glances up as well when he hears Bucky speak, frowning slightly. Or maybe that's just his default expression, who knows.]

You ever had it before?

[Just a little more is right. Eichi is impossibly close, overcome with pleasure from the intensity of these vibrations. He's not used to it at all. He's not used to any of this at all. His motions get more desperate the closer he gets, really grabbing at Gladio's arm as muffled moans and quick breaths are covered by that hand, and his hips keep trying to rock up to make that feeling last longer.

Soon enough, it hits the right spot long enough to send him over the edge. He comes hard, his whole body shuddering as his mess spills out over himself, and all of that sound slowly dies as his body practically melts through the table. He's breathing incredibly hard, and his heart beat is out of control— but it will stabilize.

He can't even keep holding on to Gladio, both of his hands dropping uselessly to his sides as he struggles to catch his breath. His eyes are only halfway open, if at all, as he tries to steal a glance up to Gladio. That bulge in those leather pants is too obvious, looks too painful, but he's too exhausted to even reach up to touch him.]

Gladio... [Well, he's a satisfied mess.]

[ Hana manages to barely avoid a collision with what is probably one of many wizards now slumming it in the Quarantine. He skirts around her a step or two, eyes tracking her as she moves past, his expression somewhere between skeptical and impressed, considering the load of food she’s balancing. ]

Are you seriously gonna eat all that?

[ Peter’s kind of used to the whole “end up some place completely alien totally out of the blue” deal, even though he wishes he wasn’t, but like the last time this happened to him, he learned to make do. He spends a fair bit of time exploring the Quarantine, and he’s startled and pleased to find how many similarities it shares with what he remembers of Earth – some of the same foods, the same music, even a few old movies he recognizes, here and there. The rest of it, though, is about as alien as Peter’s used to, and the way all these worlds settle together is kind of fascinating.

It’s nice out, despite the heat of summer, and Peter learned early in his arrival that the balcony connected to the room he shares with Gamora offers one hell of a view of the city. He steps out, Zune in his jacket pocket, one headphone in his ear while the other dangles, while “Once in a Lifetime” by Talking Heads plays.

And he jumps a little when he hears someone speak, and his gaze snaps to the kid with the book. Peter blinks at him for a second, then, putting on a polite sort of smile, ]

Uh. Hey there.

[ #nailedit. ]

[ boo. How will people know you’re enjoying your food unless they can see the chewed up lump in your mouth? It’s just common sense, Gamora.

Peter grins at her praise – slight though it is – before he nudges the little baggy closer to her, plucking up a chocolate coin for himself. Ever since he’s been in the Quarantine, he’s been collecting up little bits of chocolate, and probably partaking of more than his fair share. He’s missed chocolate, and it shows with the way he tears off the foil and pops the whole coin in his mouth. ]

Yeah. [ Again, with his mouthful. Old habits die hard. ] Man, I missed this stuff. I used to beg for it as a kid. Mom and I would go grocery shopping, and at checkout, they always had these big displays of candy bars and junk food. I’d pull out all the stops just so Mom would buy me a Hershey’s bar or something, but she never budged.

It’s good, right?
