[ A little over a month and Stephen is still needing breaks after using his hands for surgery. Or any procedures that require steady hands. There aren't many traumatic brain injuries to be found here - which is good, in all honesty. There had been a time he would've complained about being "bored" by the lack of complex cases. Now, he takes on other cases when he's not needed in surgery. Stitching people up, dressing wounds, diagnosing illnesses, signing prescription slips. It all comes back naturally to more he falls back into the routine.
He's even missed wearing the scrubs, in a way. The only thing that he finds discomfort in are the scars along his hands. tops, palms, and fingers bear them for anyone to see if they were to look. It was rare for him to feel self-conscious in that sense considering how vain he had been in the past. Or maybe he just hated the reminder some days. Other days, he barely noticed aside from the tremors that would result after using them too much.
All the same, he tries to focus on his work, meditating during his breaks in an attempt to recharge himself from all the energy he was using to steady his hands. By the time his shift was over, it was usual for him to feel exhausted.
During the days he's at the hospital he can be found making his rounds, meditating on his break (usually in the garden on the grounds), using his magic to get the vending machine to work because this fucking thing, or anyone could run into him as he's leaving after his shift. ]

[ Aside from the time spent at Kamar-Taj, the last time Stephen shared a living space with anyone was back during his time in the residency program in New York at his first hospital. He had loathed it in a way but also grew to enjoy the attention he ended up getting. He made the highest grades during school and performed nearly every procedure perfectly, earning him routine praise from the surgeons and other medical staff. He ended up being the one everyone came to for help (and sometimes wanted a little more than help with studies - both of which he was happy to provide).
Then, at that age, he had been young and ambitious, growing more arrogant and yet secretly terrified of screwing it all up before he had really gotten a chance to start.
Now, he was older and in a completely different phase of his life. It was almost surreal to go back to being a doctor some days and then talking about magic on others. And then he would come back to his floor in the communal housing and roommates and his cloak was always the first to greet him, launching at him the moment he entered the room and wrapping around him in its form of a hug. The first few times, he protested and shoved it off. Now, he would pat it and give a muffled greeting of his own as the collar would pat at his face the same way a dog would lick it. ]
Yeah, yeah, I missed you, too.
[ And it was mostly true. He was growing more fond of the cloak the more he was around it, folding itself at the foot of his bed when he slept and always floating nearby when he was awake. ]

[ Since he was still getting used to the whole "Master of the Mystic Arts" title (and not being the Sorcerer Supreme everyone keeps saying he is), Stephen felt comfortable in his title as advisor rather than taking on a teaching role. Plus, he didn't think he had the patience to be a teacher.
Didn't stop him from keeping an eye on classes or sitting in on lectures, even giving a few himself. When he's not doing that, he can usually be found in his office (with those incantations up to keep a certain AsgardianLoki out) or practicing more of his own spells on the roof of the building. ]

He doesn't even turn around as he tosses over his shoulder, ]
Not all of us can be silver-tongued.
no subject
[ He chuckles, his attention caught somewhat. Usually he brushes such things to the side. ]
Or do you truly believe a threat like that does more good than harm? A boast of fighting worse is meant to cower? There is no harm in learning the skill if you wish to remain in this trade.
no subject
Does it bother you that much? That I've faced worse than you.
[ Because he's amused Loki isn't just letting it go like he did his initial warning. ]
no subject
[ If it was an Asgardian, perhaps Loki would. But a human he barely knows? Unlikely. ]
All I meant was you're clearly very new to this.
no subject
"Clearly"?
no subject
Most heroes don't boast or threaten on their first conversation. They usually at least try to introduce themselves first.
Or provide some kind of witty quip. But they tend to reserve their comedy for battle.
i feel like we're getting so meta with this lmao
So... let me get this straight: you want me to be like "other heroes".
[ Yes, he even did the air quotes. ]
How about no? How about, I do my own thing because, again, I'm not an Avenger. I don't like making quips when I'm trying to focus on, you know, saving the world.
:>
I didn't say want. I'm not particularly invested in what heroes or Avengers do. They're not my concern anymore.
[ Thanos can have them. C'est la vie. ]
I simply said you're not convincing in any way. You come off as young and inexperienced. I thought you'd like to at least work on that, if nothing else.
no subject
And you're not convincing as a teacher so we're both unimpressed with each other.

Yes, except I have no interest in that either. You, on the other hand, have wagered your soul on this. Being good is what rises you in the morning. It reminds you that there is something in you worth seeing and worth fighting for.
[ The papers vanish as Loki moves to the door. But he stops, turning around. ]
What is that thing you did with your fingers? Is it a lewd gesture?
no subject
It's not about me.
[ Another lesson he had to learn the hard way.
But then Loki is taking the subject somewhere else and Stephen has to blink at him, brow furrowed in confusion before he raises his hands and does the air quotes again. ]
What? This?
no subject
Yes. What does it mean?
no subject
His hands go back to his hips, ]
It means I've put a curse on you.
no subject
Don't give magic a bad name.
no subject
You've seriously never seen anyone do that before? They're air quotes.
no subject
[ He tests it on his tongue slowly. Perhaps he'll ask his other self. He is far more well-versed in the slang and literature than Loki was. ]
I am not familiar with mortals say or do these days. It has been a century since I truly walked among you.
no subject
It's just repeating what someone else said in a mocking way. Usually when you don't agree with that other person. Like... when someone said they only had one shot the night before and they still look wasted the next day. Their "only one shot" story is clearly bullshit.
[ And he repeats the gesture around the words 'only one shot' as a demonstration. ]
no subject
Fascinating.
[ Absently, he mimics the gesture with child-like curiosity, looking pleased at his attempt. ]
Certainly better than the lewd ones.
