prijata

In the days leading up to June 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Prijata. Riverview Quarantine has a strong culture of love, and they celebrate all types - Prijata is a special celebration of platonic love and building community through friendship. Prijata traditions include gift exchanges between friends, sharing meals cooked together by friend groups, and a variety of events and services aimed at making friends.

a celebration of platonic love

Prijata is a relatively relaxed holiday, focused mainly on friendship and platonic love - dedicated to appreciating the friends already in one's life, and opening oneself up to making new friends. Besides the private giving of gifts between friends, there is also a city-wide government-sponsored gift fountain that is open throughout the entire week. Included in the wide variety of events catered to finding new friends, are 'speed friending' and a large open exhibition where all the specialized clubs in Riverview can recruit for new members - and residents new or old can create a club and recruit.

i. gift fountain

While Prijata gift exchanges between friends are generally a quiet affair, done at friend-group dinners or parties, the element of gift giving does extend outward - community-wide, in fact. Throughout the course of the week, anyone living in Riverview Quarantine can drop by the huge fountain in the City Center, in front of the City Hall. They will find that the fountain is chock full of floating gift boxes in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and different shapes - though none larger than a shoe box. There are signs put up around the fountain stating that the boxes are magic and will only seek and open for their rightful owners. Characters will find that, upon touching the water, a box will float over to them, and when they pick it up, the top will unfurl like flower petals, displaying the gift inside. Sometimes, the box won't appear on the first try, since there's only so much space in the fountain at any given time, but if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Every person in the city (including new arrivals) will receive one gift by the end of the week.

Gift fountain boxes will contain one small item from each character's home dimension (or, for CRAUs, from their previous game), similar to the "items from home" bonus reward, but without needing to spend points. The item should be small enough to fit in a shoebox, sentimental, and cannot be something intended for another person's character. ETA: If you can't think of an item like this that would work for your character, something of similar size and quality to what's described above that would make the character very happy can be substituted.

This prompt can also be used for gift exchanges and for characters to receive the Government-given gifts that were suggested in the Prijata Pregaming posts on the OOC community and the TDM.

ii. speed-friending

This is pretty much what it says on the tin! Much like speed-dating setups, many bars, coffee shops, and other places that people might gather are holding speed-friending! It's your standard setup - characters enter and fill out a quick questionnaire about themselves, and flit from table to table looking for someone with great friend chemistry. Not all of them are general and open to anyone who walks in, though, with many being specialized to people who are invested in certain hobbies, occupations, or with specific sets of interests. With specialized speed-friending setups ranging from horror movie buffs to members of the Perimeter Guard to fashionistas to sports or martial arts to video games, no matter what your character is into, they're likely to be able to sign up for a special event where they can go looking for a friend who's into the same things they are!

For this prompt, you can put up a list of hobbies or interests your character has, and compatible characters can hit them up for a speed-friending thread, like the IC equivalent of the CR meme!

iii. club exhibition

Speed-friending is all well and good, but not everyone is outgoing or open enough to know if they have friend chemistry in only a few minutes. For anyone looking to find groups of like-minded individuals they can spend more than a few minutes with before committing to something as daunting as a friendship, there is a week-long club exhibition happening in the Town Square in the City Center. Table after table and booth after booth are occupied by existing clubs in the city, with an incredibly broad scope of focus interests and hobbies - enough that any character should be able to find a club with their niche interest represented.

And if it isn't? Characters are welcome to start their own clubs - much like a business, a character-run club can have space set aside in the city for meetings and event mingles that are eligible for Activity Point Bonuses for the organizer.

iv. unveiling the new friendr

Prijata this year is marked by something special - the unveiling of a code rebuild of the ubiquitous Friendr app! Anyone with the app installed already will receive a prompt to update the app, and if anyone hasn't yet downloaded it, they'll receive a quick, easily-dismissed pop-up ad on their device when they next access the network, asking if they want to. No one is obligated, and the ad is a one-time instance, intended to make sure any character who hasn't heard of the app gets a chance.

The Friendr app is a swipe-left-or-right style friend matching and/or dating app that is very common in Riverview, both for PCs and NPCs, and it has received an upgrade with a new appearance, a new interests line for more accurate matching, and a wide variety of themes so that the colors can be customized!

Please see the updated appearance below, with the 'default' color scheme. Players are free to change the colors or appearance of the code but please do not remove the credit line showing where the base code came from, out of respect for the code creator.

[ Jon's nose scrunches up. His fingers grip the edge of the table (and there are grooves in the wood, just barely there). It feels like a sore spot, one Jon doesn't know how to avoid right now. His mother is gone (and she was never his) just like his cousin. His father was the only Kryptonian here and he had no answers for Jon as he stays here, some strange hybrid who has to hide his identity.

It's sore and he's ten and not at all practiced at this. ]

Well, you don't know anyone like me.

[ His tone is sullen and churlish, but Jon can't help himself. ]

[axefight]

[ he leans forward slightly, gaze briefly flicking down to the table. ]

I should hope not. What'd be the point in talking to you, if you're just the same as someone I already know? Boring.

[ then drops his voice, conspiratorially, ]

D'you know what? No one else like me here, either.

[supersweet]

[ Jon's eyes widen slightly as he takes the Doctor in with a new gaze. ]

Because you're really, really old?

[axefight]

Ye--

what? No, it's... [ he trips eloquently over whatever he was going to say there, ] --Well, yes.

But that's not entirely what I meant.

[supersweet]

[ Hmm. Come to think of it, Jon has been hearing something strange for a while. He's naturally attuned to the heartbeats of Riverview, able to listen and find people from the sound alone. And from this man, he can hear . . . two heartbeats. ]

What do you mean then?

[axefight]

[ glances around furtively, holding one hand up to the side of his mouth, and just generally acting like he's about to divulge a huge secret or something. ]

I'm an alien. From space.

[supersweet]

[ Jon has better manners than anyone else his age . . . but he is also ten. His look is a deadpan worthy of his mother. ]

We have those. Lots of them. I guess you're kind of different because you're the oldest human-looking alien I've ever seen.

Come on. I can't look that old.

[ he may be absolute shit at determining people's physical ages, including his own, but he's PRETTY SURE he doesn't look as old as everyone keeps insisting. SURELY. ]

[axefight]

[ he gets over it a second later, though - and doesn't seem the least bit bothered by jon's non-reaction. like he was expecting it. ]

I am over two thousand. And not a sort you've met before, I'm sure.

[ waves his hand, like he's brushing the topic aside, ] But I shouldn't tell you everything about me, when I know very little about you.

[supersweet]

[ Jon hesitates once more. An alien . . . like Jon. Well. Not quite but still. If his dad can trust other people, maybe Jon could . . . say a few things without breaking his word. ]

I'm not allowed to talk about it. Because then people will come and take me away.

[ But no one in Riverview would do that and Jon knows it. For the first time, it's safe in a way he never expected it to be. ]

I'm half. Alien, I mean.

[axefight]

[ his expression shifts, watching the kid intently from under lowered brows, a flash of concern in there, to some sort of understanding. he expected alien; wasn't so sure about 'half.' ]

Oh.

Well, I'm hardly going to blab.

[ he narrows his eyes. ] But you're not worried... about that happening to you here, are you?

[ or is he gonna have to go take care of some half-alien child-napping villains? ]

[supersweet]

[ Jon shrugs, rocking his chair a little. ]

It can happen anywhere. We have a lot of enemies. I've been kidnapped like. Twice?

[ Scrunching up his face, Jon wracks his (short) memory before nodding sagely. ]

Twice. Though maybe the second time doesn't count.

[axefight]

[ things that are not alright: that. ]

Who would your enemies here be?

[supersweet]

Here? I dunno.

[ Jon purses his lips thinking about Intergang, the Eradicator . . . there were too many to list. None of them were here, but the promise is binding. Jon has to keep his life a secret. ]

I mean, I don't think anyone here will do it but . . . [ He shrugs helplessly. ] I've got to keep my promise. I mean, you probably have to hide stuff too, right?

[ concern not entirely abated, but.

he looks down at his hands, resting on his table. oh, he certainly does have stuff - even more so than usual lately. ]

I do.

[axefight]

[ he looks up with a renewed intensity - a sudden air of gravitas, ]

I've sworn to protect the secrets... of the ancient and arcane powers of my people -

[ accompanies this with several strange hand motions, reaches towards jon-- ]

[ and "pulls" a coin outta his ear with an unnecessary flourish. ]

[supersweet]

Woah.

[ Jon's awe is non-feigned and completely awed before his grin splits his face. ]

That's cool! We don't have any arcane secrets, I don't think. I mean, we have other stuff but dad doesn't really remember much of it.

[axefight]

[ holy shit, it worked. that might be a first.

he sits back, soaking this victory in for a second. ]

Oh, that's a shame. Everyone ought to have a few arcane secrets.

[ taps his fingers together, seems to consider something... ]

Tell you what. Maybe someday I'll let you in on one or two. Alien to alien.

[supersweet]

Only if you feel like it.

[ Jon smiles warmly. ]

Everyone has stuff they don't want to talk about.

[axefight]

[ shrugs. ]

Wouldn't have mentioned it, in that case - don't you worry.

[supersweet]

Cool. I grew up on Earth so I don't actually know much about my world. And it doesn't exist anymore so Dad doesn't know everything either.

[ Jon wished he knew more though. Or that his father would tell him more. He gets that, in a way, he wants Jon to feel more connected to Earth. But that connection can only go so far. ]

[axefight]

Ah.

[ he glances down, something quite sad passing over his expression. ]

What was it called?

[supersweet]

[ Jon hesitates before he replies quietly. ]

Krypton.

[axefight]

[ sad, and looking every inch his age, now. he goes over the massive rolodex of planet names in his head, and surprisingly (to him), comes up empty. ]

The little pieces you do have, they may not seem like much - but they are. You're keeping it alive.

I suspect... you'll learn more as you grow.

[supersweet]

[ Jon can't help the flicker of belligerence. It's not the Doctor's fault, but the "as you get older" line has been constantly in use since Jon got here. He wonders though, if he is truly keeping Krypton alive.

The last he checked, some parts of Krypton would prefer him dead. ]
