prijata

In the days leading up to June 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Prijata. Riverview Quarantine has a strong culture of love, and they celebrate all types - Prijata is a special celebration of platonic love and building community through friendship. Prijata traditions include gift exchanges between friends, sharing meals cooked together by friend groups, and a variety of events and services aimed at making friends.

a celebration of platonic love

Prijata is a relatively relaxed holiday, focused mainly on friendship and platonic love - dedicated to appreciating the friends already in one's life, and opening oneself up to making new friends. Besides the private giving of gifts between friends, there is also a city-wide government-sponsored gift fountain that is open throughout the entire week. Included in the wide variety of events catered to finding new friends, are 'speed friending' and a large open exhibition where all the specialized clubs in Riverview can recruit for new members - and residents new or old can create a club and recruit.

i. gift fountain

While Prijata gift exchanges between friends are generally a quiet affair, done at friend-group dinners or parties, the element of gift giving does extend outward - community-wide, in fact. Throughout the course of the week, anyone living in Riverview Quarantine can drop by the huge fountain in the City Center, in front of the City Hall. They will find that the fountain is chock full of floating gift boxes in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and different shapes - though none larger than a shoe box. There are signs put up around the fountain stating that the boxes are magic and will only seek and open for their rightful owners. Characters will find that, upon touching the water, a box will float over to them, and when they pick it up, the top will unfurl like flower petals, displaying the gift inside. Sometimes, the box won't appear on the first try, since there's only so much space in the fountain at any given time, but if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Every person in the city (including new arrivals) will receive one gift by the end of the week.

Gift fountain boxes will contain one small item from each character's home dimension (or, for CRAUs, from their previous game), similar to the "items from home" bonus reward, but without needing to spend points. The item should be small enough to fit in a shoebox, sentimental, and cannot be something intended for another person's character. ETA: If you can't think of an item like this that would work for your character, something of similar size and quality to what's described above that would make the character very happy can be substituted.

This prompt can also be used for gift exchanges and for characters to receive the Government-given gifts that were suggested in the Prijata Pregaming posts on the OOC community and the TDM.

ii. speed-friending

This is pretty much what it says on the tin! Much like speed-dating setups, many bars, coffee shops, and other places that people might gather are holding speed-friending! It's your standard setup - characters enter and fill out a quick questionnaire about themselves, and flit from table to table looking for someone with great friend chemistry. Not all of them are general and open to anyone who walks in, though, with many being specialized to people who are invested in certain hobbies, occupations, or with specific sets of interests. With specialized speed-friending setups ranging from horror movie buffs to members of the Perimeter Guard to fashionistas to sports or martial arts to video games, no matter what your character is into, they're likely to be able to sign up for a special event where they can go looking for a friend who's into the same things they are!

For this prompt, you can put up a list of hobbies or interests your character has, and compatible characters can hit them up for a speed-friending thread, like the IC equivalent of the CR meme!

iii. club exhibition

Speed-friending is all well and good, but not everyone is outgoing or open enough to know if they have friend chemistry in only a few minutes. For anyone looking to find groups of like-minded individuals they can spend more than a few minutes with before committing to something as daunting as a friendship, there is a week-long club exhibition happening in the Town Square in the City Center. Table after table and booth after booth are occupied by existing clubs in the city, with an incredibly broad scope of focus interests and hobbies - enough that any character should be able to find a club with their niche interest represented.

And if it isn't? Characters are welcome to start their own clubs - much like a business, a character-run club can have space set aside in the city for meetings and event mingles that are eligible for Activity Point Bonuses for the organizer.

iv. unveiling the new friendr

Prijata this year is marked by something special - the unveiling of a code rebuild of the ubiquitous Friendr app! Anyone with the app installed already will receive a prompt to update the app, and if anyone hasn't yet downloaded it, they'll receive a quick, easily-dismissed pop-up ad on their device when they next access the network, asking if they want to. No one is obligated, and the ad is a one-time instance, intended to make sure any character who hasn't heard of the app gets a chance.

The Friendr app is a swipe-left-or-right style friend matching and/or dating app that is very common in Riverview, both for PCs and NPCs, and it has received an upgrade with a new appearance, a new interests line for more accurate matching, and a wide variety of themes so that the colors can be customized!

Please see the updated appearance below, with the 'default' color scheme. Players are free to change the colors or appearance of the code but please do not remove the credit line showing where the base code came from, out of respect for the code creator.

For this prompt, you can either post your character's new, fancy Friendr app profile in the comments, or provide a link to their updated code in an entry on their journal. Whatever floats your boat!

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during Prijata, feel free to write it up!

( She doesn't have to wait very long before someone pops into the empty chair across from her, a mug of tea in hand and a friendly expression easing across his features. He sets his own questionnaire down on the tabletop in front of him, and casts a small, silent glance across at hers, brow quirking at all the cross out markings at the top. )

And here I thought you weren't supposed to ask a woman their age. ( Hi, it's nice to meet you. ) That is true, isn't it?

Uh, I think that it's probably fine? (What does that even mean? Lucretia sits up a little straighter, and cranes her head to look at his form in return.)

Time has been working a little differently for me– oh, are you working at Gramarye too? I guess we're coworkers.

[personal profile] judicia 2017-06-09 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
( Anders had been a little curious about that, he just didn't want to ask about it directly, especially not right out of the gate. He is trying to make a decent first impression, after all, which is why opted for a more charming remark than a blunt one.

The mention of Gramarye tosses most of that curiosity out the window, though. )

Ah, so does that mean you're you a mage as well? ( Color him very interested, then. Anders allows a smile to spread across his face. ) It's a pleasure to meet you, then. I'm Anders.
scholiast: <user name=purmeka site=tumblr.com> (☆ you have me)

A mage? Please. (Whoops, it comes out a little more derisively than she had meant it to, and she coughs, embarrassed.) I'm a wizard.

And, uh, it's very nice to meet you too, Anders. I'm Lucretia. (She offers her hand across the table to him.)

[personal profile] judicia 2017-06-12 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
( It's a good thing she clarifies that quickly, because Anders was about to give her the stink eye for it. )

Is there a difference? ( Because to him, they are basically the same thing. Mage is just the preferred descriptor. Maybe wizard is hers? She's a user of magic, at any rate, though, which seems to be a satisfying enough answer for him.

He takes her proffered hand and squeezes back gently. Then, in his own self-deprecating fashion, he answers, half-jokingly, )
Give it time, you may think otherwise.

(Lucretia shrugs, taking her hand back so she can tap her fingers restlessly on the side of her cup.)

As I understand it the method of casting is different, though not by all that much. Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so rude. (She gives him a weak smile.)

Only time will tell, I guess? But I doubt it. It's nice to meet somebody else working at Gramarye. I was worried I was going to show up for my first day and not know anybody there.

[personal profile] judicia 2017-06-15 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's all right. ( He's not used to others apologizing to him like this, so the fact that Lucretia does it at all earns her his appreciation. Anders returns the look with an almost-smile. )

I'd actually like to know a little more about it, if you wouldn't mind indulging me. ( Just to sate his own personal curiosity, to know how magic works and is treated in other worlds. )

We're in the same boat, then, at least. I've just arrived to the city a few days ago. ( Which is why he thought it would be beneficial to go to one of these speed friending events. Even if he ultimately ends up annoying most of the people that he meets, at least he'll be able to say that he knows them. It'll make him feel a less alone. ) I'm still trying to get used to it all. There's so much here that I've never seen or heard of before.

(She props her elbows up on the table, resting her face in her palms as she thinks.)

Well... I've always felt that mages cast with preparation a little more clearly in mind than wizards do. I just tap into my power and use without thinking about it. There's more power, but less control.

(Hopefully this makes sense to him. She's very interested in his own opinion of the magic that he uses.)

I know what you mean. I've spent my first couple days here trying to take everything in. (And Lucretia is used to exploring and detailing her surroundings. There is so much to see and do here, not to mention all of the interesting people to talk to.)

[personal profile] judicia 2017-06-16 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose that's a fair distinction. ( For him as a mage, at least. ) When my powers first manifested, I certainly didn't have any control over them. I could summon the energy unintentionally, without thinking, but I couldn't manipulate it until I'd been taught the proper discipline and gestures.

( He was all but forced to. Because a mage who couldn't control his powers was a danger to themselves and the world. Anders stews on that thought a moment, before pushing it aside and moving on to more pleasant topics. )

Does the place you're living at have those strange machines, too? The ones they say are used for cooking? ( He doesn't even know where to begin with that, which is why he hasn't tried, thus far. He's relieved, at least, to know he's not the only one struggling with all of this. )

(She drops her arms to rummage in her pocket for her notebook and pen, nodding as she slowly writes out a couple notes without looking down at the page.) Hmm. What do you mean by manifested? Did they suddenly appear one day?

(So he didn't learn to produce magic over time? She's fascinated, despite his abrupt change of subject. Hopefully he doesn't mind her probing a little further.)

Wait, you're– you're not talking about microwaves, are you? (Aw Anders, unfortunately she does know what a microwave is.)

[personal profile] judicia 2017-06-18 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
( He doesn't mind it at all. It's— nice, actually, to talk to someone who seems genuinely interested in what he has to say. Anders sets his hands atop the table, clasped together, shrugging a bit as he answers, )

As far as I know. ( He wishes he could explain why, but he's not even sure himself. Maybe it's just part of growing up, like puberty. )

I was a bit of a late bloomer, though — my magic didn't appear until I was twelve. Most others' appear long before that, when they're eight or six.

( He's a little surprised that she knows what he's talking about, enough to at least call it by it's name. Anders hadn't thought to ask when he was looking around his communal quarters. )

Yes, I think so. The small box with a door on it, I don't know how you're supposed to cook with it.

(She hums in interest, carefully filling the page she's on right to the edge of the paper with her neat, compact handwriting. One page is unfortunately all she can spare right now: the notebook is almost full, scuffed and dogeared around the edges.)

Strange. Where do you come from, if you don't mind my asking? (It's strange to think of magic being something that suddenly manifests. Lucretia doesn't know if she envies it or not

– and, she does know what he's talking about. She may be from a fantasy world, but they also have elevators for no reason? And she is best friends with a chef.)

It's– well, it's electronic? It uses, um, radio waves to heat the molecules in food.

[personal profile] judicia 2017-06-25 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Thedas. That's what we call our world. ( He doesn't know if anyone else has stepped through the portal from Thedas, or if there will be any in the future, but he imagines if they do, that name might mean something. For now, it's just a reference note. Anders seems a little more interested in her first remark, though — )

What about it is so strange to you? How does someone become a mage, or wizard, in your world?

( He's completely lost on when she begins talking about with radio waves and molecules. Maker only knows what those are. )

Couldn't you just use fire to do that instead?
scholiast: <user name=oolongteamix site=tumblr.com> (☆ most powerful wizard)

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-25 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thedas...

(She hasn't heard of it. She jots it down anyway, circles it twice, and makes a note to cross reference it later just in case.) I don't think I've been there before, fortunately.

And- well, magic is something that you learn, where I come from. I became a wizard mostly through self-study. Your way isn't really strange at all, it just seems... odd to be born with power like that.

(She grins.) Sure, but I wouldn't want to waste a spell slot on something I could just microwave, y'know?

[personal profile] judicia 2017-06-27 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
You wouldn't want to. ( He responds bluntly. No one with any gift for magic would, not unless you enjoyed being locked up in a tower your entire life, being treated like something less than human just because you were born with powers the Chantry deems dangerous.

He listens carefully to Lucretia's explanation, novel as it is to him. That people choose to be mages where she comes from, just the same as they would choose to wield a sword or a bow. )

But since it's something that you can learn, doesn't that mean that everyone in your world must be born with some degree of magical talent?

( As for the microwave situation, ) Are you sure it's safe? I mean, you've used before haven't you?
scholiast: <user name=anonbeadraws site=tumblr.com> ((young) something to say)

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-28 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Why not? (She pauses for a moment in her note-taking to look curiously at him. She loves travelling. She's glad she has not visited Thedas because it means the Hunger will have never tried to follow her there, but under less dire circumstances she'd love to visit anyway.)

Well, yes and no. I suppose the potential is there for everybody, but- well, an elf would find it a lot easier to take to magic than an orc would, for example. Does that make sense? (It feels strange, trying to find simple enough language in order to explain this to somebody who doesn't come from Faerûn.)

And of course it's safe. They've very useful, actually. (This is so funny. Wait until she tells Taako she's met somebody who didn't understand the function of a microwave.)

[personal profile] judicia 2017-06-28 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
( The question's almost like a switch, in the way that it causes his demeanor to suddenly shift. From mildly pleasant and friendly to something more angry. Not at her, of course, but at the unjust situation back home. He frowns. )

Because you wouldn't be safe there. If you're seen using magic the templars will find you, strip you of all your rights and freedoms and lock you up in a tower for the rest of your life. Having magic is a sin, where I come from. ( There's a lot of bitterness packed into that one word, so much anger he has to give himself a moment to calm down. It wouldn't do for him to lose control, of his temper or the spirit of vengeance inside him.

He doesn't want a repeat of what happened with Ella. Anders couldn't help but still feel guilty about that. )

I think I understand. The dwarves in Thedas, they don't have any magical capacity at all. I suppose it'd make sense that some species have a better aptitude for it than others.

( Don't laugh at him, okay. He's just really suspicious about it. )

Maybe I'll give it a try, then, when I figure out how to use it.
scholiast: <user name=anonbeadraws site=tumblr.com> ((young) unconvinced)

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-06-29 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
(His anger startles her, and even though it isn't directed at her she still leans back against her chair automatically to put a little extra distance between them.)

... That's awful. (She says quietly, watching his fury ebb away just as soon as it had appeared. She can't imagine being persecuted for something like that. No wonder he's furious.) I'm sorry to hear it, Anders.

(Perhaps he is glad for the trip away from Thedas, then. Casting magic is harmless, here.)

Oh– you have dwarves too. It's precisely like that. (She relaxes, picks up her coffee cup again for a sip.) I'm human, so though I am not able to cast as easily as perhaps an elf might, I'm still able to learn. But it does take study.

(It's sort of cute. Maybe this is why Cain thought watching her try to use her phone was so funny?)

It's not that hard to use. Just button pushing, really.

[personal profile] judicia 2017-07-03 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It is awful, a lot of people know back home know is it. The problem is that they just don't care. They just see it as this necessary evil, something that has to be done to keep the mages in check. ( He still sounds a bit bitter, though not as angry as he was just a few moments ago. Before he could continue on, though, he sighs. )

Sorry, it's just — something of a sore subject for me. ( He admits, looking a bit bashful for a moment before reaching for his tea and takes a drink. Best to let the subject drop there, he thinks, before he could get himself any more riled up. )

That makes sense. Magic used to be a lot more prevalent amongst the elves than it is now. I don't know why.

( It's just something he's heard. He can commiserate with her about not being able to use a phone, though, as he's still trying to get used to his. Why does everything always have to have so many buttons? )

I suppose. I just got to learn what they all mean.
scholiast: <user name=purmeka site=tumblr.com> (☆ you have me)

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-07-04 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. (She had been prepared to voice a little more outrage at his situation, but it's very obvious that he loathes to talk about it. Lucretia hesitates, then reaches across the table to give his shoulder a little reassuring touch with her fingertips. A sort of 'don't worry' gesture. Hopefully he doesn't find it too strange.)

Same here. Magic is very prevalent among elves where I come from. (It's kind of a joke. Two out of seven people she knows are elves who can cast magic, so. She smiles.

Also– amen to the so many buttons. She has the basic functions nailed but any time somebody tries to teach her stuff that is a little more complex, she gets a bit frustrated.)

I understand. There is a lot to learn here. But, that kinda makes it exciting.

[personal profile] judicia 2017-07-08 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
( It is a bit strange to him. But only because he's been starved of any kind of physical affection for so long it's hard to remember what it even feels like. No one ever seemed to care either, about what he's been through, what other mages are going through. He was just being overdramatic, whiney.

He gives her a soft smile, as thanks. )

I've traveled around with two of them, at two different points. About as opposite as two people can be. Velanna was always so prickly. ( Him trying to hit on her probably didn't help things. He thinks back on that fondly, almost sighing when he adds, ) She called me repulsive, once.

( Good times. Anders isn't nearly as enthusiastic about all this technology, but he will admit that it has been quite convenient. )

At least I know I won't be the only one muddling through it all.
scholiast: <user name=rabdoidal site=tumblr.com> (☆ big book fulla secrets)

Oh, you know elves too!

(A point of reference is always exciting.) I've been travelling with two as well, and I'm sorry to say the both of them have called me names several times over. So perhaps it's an elf thing.

(She snorts, and rolls her eyes.)

Yeah, no kidding. I think there's quite a few people here who are in the same boat, thankfully.

[personal profile] judicia 2017-07-15 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you're right. ( He makes a little hmm sound as he considers the thought. It's a bit of an amusing one, he will admit, especially because, )

The elves back home call us humans "shemlens." I think it's supposed to be some kind of derogatory term. They do a good job of making it sound that way, anyway.

( Not that it bothered him that much. Anders is used to get sneered at and called names by now, so. That's just his normal. )

At least our work will be somewhat familiar, so we got that going for us. Maybe I'll... see you around Gramarye sometime?
scholiast: <user name=cerigg site=tumblr.com> (☆ wall flower)

[personal profile] scholiast 2017-07-17 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
'Shemlens'...

(She rolls the word around in her mouth for a moment. She's been learning Elvish, but the word is unfamiliar to her.)

It sounds far more eloquent than 'nerd', which is what my elves typically call me. (In a loving way, though, of course.)

Yes, absolutely. I'm... actually quite excited about starting work.

[personal profile] judicia 2017-07-21 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
( He doesn't know what it means either. Just that it's a slur, and the elves that use it do so in the most derisive way possible. His lips twist into his tiny half smirk when she reveals what her elves call her. )

I think I'd prefer to be called that. At least then they'd be admitting that I was smart. ( And he has no reason to doubt that she probably is, too, so. )

As am I. I'm curious about what sorts of magic they have here.
