i. community housing: floor 10

[ Turns out Ren doesn’t need much to be comfortable. The ascetic lifestyle comes easily to him now, after years of practice – and he has such meagre possessions besides.

His helmet he stows in the sturdy trunk at the foot of his bed. He has no need of it now, here, where his face is not known. His saber remains clipped to his belt, more out of habit than need. It’s too much a part of himself to leave behind.

This done, he can likely be found inspecting the floor, familiarizing himself with his new surroundings, or heading toward the elevator with the intention of heading out into the city. ]

ii. portal

[ While he has only the vaguest memory of the portal, Ren has seen enough bewildered newcomers by now that it’s lost some of its novelty.

Still, there’s a café en-route that he stops by on the way to either the barracks (to train or to check over the job roster for the day) or to the university.

He buys himself a cup of coffee (black and spiced) and a fruit pastry. ]

iii. university

[ Finally, he visits the university in the hopes of learning something of the history of his new (temporary) home. To pour over what historical records there are to be found, or perhaps to simply satisfy his curiosity.

It’s been awhile, after all, since he’s had the chance to indulge this side of himself, and so he folds himself into one of the corners of the library, several books open in front of him, and reads. ]

[since they're both in perimeter guard, it would make sense that sometimes their paths cross while traveling back and forth from the barracks. and he happens to also be a lover of coffee and baked goods, so it would also make sense that on at least one occasion they happened to be in the cafe at the same time.

and because poe is basically a puppy, he gets super excited to see the new friend he made back at memoria again.]

Hey, buddy!

[did he ever get his name? did he forget it? ~it's a mystery~ ]

Hey. [ His wave is more an awkward flick of his fingers, the greeting muffled by the pastry caught between his teeth. If he's surprised at seeing Poe again, it doesn't show. ]

We meet again.

[followhim]

[he takes a huge bite out of his cinnamon roll and swallows it down before speaking again] So we do. How've you been? Adjusting okay?

[jiaasjen]

Adjusting. [ Ren pulls the pastry from between his teeth, slowing his walk so Poe can fall into step with him should he choose, but not stopping entirely. Opportunity though this may be, he still has places he wants to visit before his next patrol starts. ]

I'd heard that they let you take a closer look at the portal if you ask but having done so, it remains as much a mystery now as it ever did. [ Not surprising but still frustrating. ]

And you? It seems like you've at least acquainted yourself with the local fare.

[followhim]

[poe follows along with him because why not. he's got the time to kill. and also, friendship.]

I've been trying. [he shrugs.] If we're going to be here for awhile, I don't see the point in resisting. Besides, this? [he gestures at the cinnamon roll] Is amazing. You've gotta try one sometime. [wait, what was the other thing he said?] ... You were looking at the portal? Why, just to ... try and learn more?

[jiaasjen]

[ It's probably the right attitude to have, considering, but Ren has yet to work himself around to that state of acceptance - if he ever will. ]

Curiosity mostly. [ It's said will all the casualness of a verbal shrug, like it costs nothing for him to admit. ] Something that can pull people from multiple points in time and multiple universes is pretty remarkable, regardless of your opinions of being brought here.

[followhim]

[to be fair, poe is only so gung-ho about being here because he thinks that he died. but he doesn't like to come right out with that. it's kind of a downer. and at least he's alive here? so ... he's trying to look on the bright side.]

I'm not disagreeing with that. I guess I didn't think that I could gain anything by going back, that's all. I barely remember being there.

[jiaasjen]

[ That damned optimism. Granted, Ren doesn't really know Poe beyond their own brief encounter and by reputation. Talented, daring; somehow his being a nice guy on top of that seems almost unfair.

He takes a bite of his cinnamon bun, chews, looking thoughtful as Poe confesses that he doesn't think he'll be going back. ] To the portal?

[followhim]

Yeah, to the portal. [said in the intonation of duh weirdo what did you think i meant?] Were you planning on going back again today?

[jiaasjen]

[ The obvious answer in retrospect but then there'd been something in the phrasing, a subtle dip in his mood even if it had only lasted seconds.

He continues to chew thoughtfully a moment longer before answering, turning his head: ] Thought I'd check out the university actually.

[followhim]

[GET OUTTA MY HEAD CHARLES!!

anyway, poe takes in this information thoughtfully.]

Why the university?

[jiaasjen]

The library. [ There has to be one somewhere, or some kind of historical record in general. Something that hasn't been reduced, sanitized, over the years.

Better to be proactive than risk losing what remains of his sanity pacing the housing floor. ] I've a little while before my next patrol starts.

[followhim]

To research the portal? [he asks, then takes another huge bite out of his cinnamon roll while mulling this over.] You're obsessed. [the statement is teasing, a friendly jab. because they're friends, ok. also he has clearly invited himself along without actually saying as much.]

[jiaasjen]

Among other things. [ It's not his intention to be cryptic but he will work the mystery to his advantage if he can, luring along his unexpected company along with him if he can. ]

You never mentioned your name. [ He knows, of course, but tucks this knowledge away carefully, betraying nothing in his expression. ] When we met before. I'm Ben.

[followhim]

Oh! You're right. I'm sorry. I'm Poe, Poe Dameron. [he'd offer his hand for shaking but it's full of cinnamon roll so he does not.] It's good to meet you, Ben.

[Speaking of ascetic lifestyles, one of the people living on floor 10 turns out to be a woman whose possessions seem to be limited to, well, the clothes she's wearing and that's it. The surroundings of the bed she's sitting on are empty and don't give the impression of being used at all.

Her attire includes a weird blindfold by the way, though upon Ren approaching she turns towards him with an expression of moderate interest. Maybe she can see him after all.]

Yes?

[ So far his investigation of this floor hasn't turned up much of interest: two large rooms, each with five beds, some in use and some not. Several large, communal areas. Slightly more spacious than the average military barracks but still spartan in comparison to some of the other levels.

Interesting.

Then there's a voice, soft. He pauses, mid-step, turning. His gaze settles on the woman, on her strange (to his mind, he had no idea what counts as strange here) attire and his brows lift slightly: ] What?

You seemed interested in something.

[The impression of someone exploring new surroundings, trying to familiarize themselves with the unknown. 2B recognizes it - she was there not too long ago herself.]

Can I help you with anything?

[jiaasjen]

[ Rather an understatement that. The housing area offers him little by way of interest save in getting a sense for the people he is currently sharing space with.

Searching for one in particular, in fact, though he hasn't felt her presence save for that brief flicker during those early, bewildering days. ] No.

Alright then.

[She doesn't sound bothered. It's only natural that some people may prefer to keep to themselves. In fact, 2B is one of them.

But on the other hand, she still feels the need to help humans if she meets one who looks like they could use some assistance.]

[He's not going to offer a reason why he's here, but he is, dwi Kylo Ren. Before he even sees what sorts of books Ren's reading--]
