community housing

[ Anyone who knows Ronan Lynch or has seen him around will recognize his raven Chainsaw swooping around menacingly in front of the community housing. Is she hunting something? Trying to gouge your eyes out?

Another look will reveal Adam standing below her trajectory. Every so often, he tosses up some food that gets her to swoop and calls out something in Latin. Whatever he's saying, she responds by doing aerobatic tricks.

Stand there long enough and she might come barreling worryingly close to you. ]

breaking and centering

[ Have some sort of vehicle that needs a tune-up? Or just want to find someone with a wrench? Breaking and Centering is your place! Adam is working, but it's a slow day. If you're just passing by, he's balancing on a workbench with a textbook in his lap and a wrench in the other.

If you're bringing him something to look at, you might be treated to a mildly judgmental: ] What did you do to it?

perimeter

[ Adam has been taking classes at the university, but he's not getting all of the information he wants. Therefore, he has to find it for himself. He takes some light provisions, long-sleeved shirt and pants to protect from strange plants, a knife, cheap binoculars, and a notebook.

The plan is to find a creature he's never seen before and study it from afar. Find him kneeling between overgrown plants and taking notes, or maybe save him from a creature that will probably eat him. ]

Oh—you don't have to. I didn't want to interrupt your work. [ He really didn't expect such a friendly response. Still, he steps closer to examine the lettuce, reaching out to feel at the leaves. ]

I'm Adam, by the way. Should've introduced myself earlier.

Hey, Adam. I'm Iris.

[Not that his presence bothers her. If the smile on her face is anything to go by, she's perfectly happy to have another person around.]

Then why don't I take a break and give you a tour? It's a pretty neat place.

[That way it doesn't interrupt work and gets some answers to his earlier questions. All at the same time.]

Well— [ He feels even worse taking up her break time, but it would be nice to get a tour and see the actual process they use. ] Sure, I'd appreciate that, miss.

[ It doesn't seem as if things are too busy here. Maybe it'd be a nice place for a part-time, laid-back job. ] Did you use anything like this back where you're from? It's sort of amazing to me, even though I'd heard of it before.

Home had nothing like this. My world used farmlands to grow food. This is the first I've heard of hydroponic gardening. I always thought there was just the one kind.

[The soil kind. This is still a learning process for her and the tour might be lackluster with her limited knowledge. She's definitely going to try and be informative though.]

You said you've heard of it. Was it used in your world?

[ Honestly, he's glad he's not the only one in the dark. He'd hate to feel stupid. ]

Yeah, but not much. It's mostly farmlands, I'd really only heard of it in regards to space travel. You know, trying to grow plants on different planets that don't have our soil. But that's really futuristic stuff. [ He sounds a little more excited when talking about it, like he has a lot of thoughts on that topic. ]

I'm guessing all of this technology is pretty new for you too?

[The thought of space travel never crossed her mind back on Eos. While they had a high level of technology in her hometown, going into space was never a point of discussion. Her knowledge on the subject only extends to knowing they have a moon and sun, and somewhere between that the astrals hung out. Probably.]

Yeah, the farming especially. There was so much to learn when I first started and-well.

[She looks around, rubbing the back of her head.]

As great as this is, I kinda miss planting things the other way. You know, in the ground.

[ He looks over at her and gives a quiet laugh in surprise. ]

Really? I've never actually done any sort of farming, but I always got tired of being around dirt and dust anyway. What do you miss about it?

Hm-guess it's hard to put a finger on that.

[It gave her a feeling of a accomplishment. All the digging in the dirt, watering the plant for days and making sure no bugs chomped it. It made her feel useful to her friends and brother too, when they would occasionally come back to her house to sell the vegetable.]

It was just amazing to see all your hard work turn into something useful. Vegetables taste better when you grow them with your own two hands.

[ It's weird, actually, how much that makes sense to him. He can definitely understand the value of hard work and not taking the easy route. ]

Huh. I think I get that. Not with farming exactly, but working as hard as possible so you can have something you enjoy, something you got on your own that doesn't belong to anyone else. [ That's one of the most important things to him. ]

Was this a hobby or your job, back home?

[Her face lights up when he puts into words what she couldn't and nods her head at the question.]

Yeah, you got it. Guess it was both. It started as a way to help out and then my friends were able to sell them. Kinda thought I could turn it into a job.

[Then neverending darkness happened and she doesn't want to get into that. Let's leave it on a happy note.]

What about you? Do you have something you enjoy like that?

[ That sounds pretty smart of her, especially for someone who looks awfully young. Although the question makes him pause and frown.

Work and school aren't really answers because he has to do them. ] Uh... I guess not. It sounds pathetic, I know, but I never really had the time for hobbies.

I think that's why I'm interested in this. I have a lot more time than at home and I have no clue what to do with it. A lot of people take up gardening, right?

That's right. It's a great hobby! You get see everything grow and take care of it. They're kinda like pets that way.

[It doesn't sound pathetic to her. It's just the luck of the draw. She had time for hobbies back in her world, but there were innumerable others who weren't lucky enough to have that amount of free time.]

The vegetables are fun, but have you ever thought about growing flowers too?

[She loves flowers. Those are the best to grow.]

[ Well, she doesn't sound like she thinks he's lame. Her optimism is pretty encouraging, actually. ]

Aren't flowers sorta... [ Girly is the first thing that comes to mind, but he can hear Blue telling him that he's being sexist. Okay, give it a chance. ] I mean, would you recommend that?

I think it's handy to grow your own food, but I dunno what I'd do with flowers.

You don't have to do anything with flowers. That's kinda the point. They're a good way to practice when you aren't in the gardens and besides, they make a house feel like home.

[She can guess the word about to come out of his mouth and she's going to do her best to convince him otherwise. Flowers are great Adam.]

Consider it your first homework assignment.

[With an automatic 100% for an attempt at it. She's a generous teacher.]

The rooms they put us in here are barely houses in the first place. [ It's the homework assignment that gets to him. Look, he's a model student. He can't pass down a chance to get an A. ]

... Alright. I get it. Training wheels first. I don't want to grow some awful mutant vegetable on accident. [ Which is a very real threat here, he imagines. ]

Any flowers you'd suggest? You can tell I don't know much about 'em.

No one said a mutant vegetable can't taste good!

[It could be a new staple in their hydroponic farm in the future. They have hybrid vegetables afterall. Why not mutant ones?
]

Why don't we start with...violets! Those are pretty easy to take care of.

[ That makes him laugh. Her positivity is refreshing after being constantly suspicious of people. ]

Violets... Yeah, I can handle that. Those are actually pretty useful, I've heard. The Romans used to sweeten their wine with them, and I think you can use them in food.

[ Not that he knows how to cook at all. ]

Once I'm done, how about I make something out of them for you? And then you can decide if I pass.

Oh, that's a great idea! Do your best then. I'm a tough grader.

[Despite the joy she gets from tending to the garden, she doesn't know any uses for most of the plants outside of looking pretty. Adam is a wealth of information and that's very cool.]
