( closed ) lost research

who: Jim Kirk, Leonard McCoy, Peggy Carter, Re-L Mayer, Shai Ebbisaryn, Sans, Dick Grayson, Scott Lang, Yuuri Katsuki, Victor Nikiforov
what: a rescue mission
when: from May 15th through to the end of the month
where: abandoned area, along the river, the delta and the waterfalls; between the first and second walls
warnings: monster attacks, probably some injuries/blood, don't expect anything more than that; add any needed warnings on your own threads as needed, please!

Despite the risks, most of the journey was a fairly quiet one. A lot of hours walking, making their way along the riverside, trekking through the woods and across small clearings. When the sun set they'd set up camp somewhere, and as soon as it rose they got back to their feet and out towards the Delta underneath the waterfalls.

Jim made sure they had all they needed; maps, compasses, whatever devices that could help them navigate the terrain. As far as supplies went, they had plenty of covers and extra clothes to make sure they didn't suffer through the colder nights, but there were no luxuries out here. If it rained, they'd be mostly unprotected, and they could only shower and wash their clothes so long as they had the time and access to the stream of the river. There was plenty of food, hopefully enough to last them the round trip, but they also had a myriad of tools and weaponry needed for any hunting and scavenging so they didn't always have to consume from the food they'd brought along for the trip.

The creatures living out here were another concern, and on a journey this long, they were bound to run into something sooner or later. They should be packing enough weaponry to keep the team safe and everyone in one piece, though.

Hopefully, it would be worth it. Jim didn't even care if they didn't get their hands on any of that research— all he cared about was that there were people possibly lost and in danger out there, and he wanted to try and save them.

"I can imagine. Is it matter out of nowhere or do you pull it from something else?" The idea was interestin' to say the least. Not that most people went into the science of their abilities. "Doubt you're a party coordinator, however." He pointed out without any feeling behind it. If that were the case, she wouldn't be there with them. Which meant, likely, the ability could be lethal and useful.

Hazel eyes came to rest on her for a moment at the specifics to what she could do and he decided it best not to ask about that further right in that moment. If he didn't know or understand the mechanics of her abilities, he rather not use them. Not that he wouldn't break that particular rule given the right circumstances.

"Where I can't say I know the sentiment toward an object, I can understand it in other ways." Granted he figured his love for his daughter scaled higher in importance to himself than an inanimate object. But he would never say that out loud. "What sort of work did you do, if you don't mind me askin'. I'm sure Jim told you about Starfleet's mission..."

"Matter out of nowhere would be scientifically impossible, I think. It's more... a manipulation of what already exists." Molecules, and the like. Orpheo would probably know, or could easily pluck the answer from a leading culgenic scientist, but Shai's always been content with knowing that the power's there if she reaches for it.

She blows out a breath in amusement. "Oh, I could be, at the right sort of party." She'd be a ruthless planner of surprise birthdays, if she knew that was a thing other cultures did. Where she comes from, one had only a birth month, and celebrated at the midmark of the month - along with everyone else born in that time frame. It involved a national holiday, a government stipend, and a brilliant festival that celebrated the togetherness and warmth of the shared ceremony.

She misses it, honestly. Yet, she's not bothered to celebrate in years.

"It was actually a point of conversation we both had. I'm from a peacekeeping corps as well, the Greyjanes. We help broker treaties between worlds as necessary, keep things above board. Knock heads together when the situation calls for it."

That last one is most definitely almost always her job. She's good at it, and at thirty-three she's not certain she could track another trajectory even if she wanted to.

"It would be. But I hear some people around here are a bit beyond my pay grade." He never cut out possibilities. Not with some of the people he'd heard about. Though, he feels more at ease in a way that it is grounded in the principles of mass and matter. "Guess I just get curious about the hows and whys. Does it effect you in the area of medical care?" That curiosity was his job, though. To know if he should be aware of anything when treating her should he need to.

"That mean you like a good party?" He chuckled at that, trying to imagine that. She looked like a warrior. A fighter of sorts. At least he could read some of the telltale things that he saw in Jim. Even if both she and Jim were in something of a peace keeping force. If nothing else, he'd guess she was not one to back down when the cards were on the table.

"Sounds a lot like life on the Enterprise. I'm sure the two of you get on real well when you talk." It really felt as though she and Jim had plenty to talk about and compare. "Someone's gotta do it... some people just end up 'knockin' heads together' more often than others." Sometimes he felt like that sort of thing followed Jim like the plague. "Long as you love the work, I s'pose."

Ever the doctor. Of course he'd be curious, and wonder, and perhaps even worry. If he's anything like the ones she knows, he'd be fussed about the possibility of some extranormal reaction to medicinal care until he got a proper scan of her on a sub atomic level. "No. I get shot, you'll need to pull it out same as anybody." The probability of a bullet being able to pierce her shielding is slim, but her awareness and attention isn't infinite. These things happen. Bullets? Not her favourite experience, but better a few bloody, screaming hours than dead.

Parties, though. Kveth's tits, she's not attended one that wasn't at a public function in years. She laughs a bit. "I suppose. If the circumstances suited me. Generally, though... mm. Better places to be." At the helm of the Ephemera. Closest thing she has to a home these days. "And yeah, it sounds a lot like what your Jim's touched on. Smaller crew, of course. Never more than eight of us on my girl. Wouldn't trade it for the world." And isn't that just the meat of it. Her smile twists. "What about you, Doc? What lead you to your little corner of the stars?"

"So no change on the biological level. Good to know. Makes it more cut and dry to treat then. Thanks." It's not that he wanted any secrets or anything of the sort. He was a doctor. He needed to know if something did happen. What should he do? "I'm a pretty fast learner, but I prefer to know what I'm up against if there is something I should know." He could learn quick and on the fly, but that left room for errors.

"Not much time for parties, I'm sure. If it's anything like being on the Enterprise." Not that they didn't try to have their own fun when it allowed. It just didn't happen on large scales, what with shifts and all. Though he stops a second at her calling Jim 'his' and quickly shoves that aside. It likely didn't mean much. He hoped he wasn't that obvious.

Well... he likely wasn't till she asked him that question and the only answer he really had was Jim. Pressing his lips together, he ran a hand through his hair. "Went through a really bad divorce. Ex-wife took it all including our kid." Sighing softly, he leaned back and tipped his head up to look up at the sky. He liked to pretend she was out there somewhere, but he knew that damn door was the only way to her. "Went to Starfleet just to have a place to go away from that." Away from the death of his father and losing his family.

"Planned on just doing medical research. Just wanted some outpost to do my work. I like research." But that didn't explain why he agreed to take a commission on a starship and go out for five years into the very thing that terrified him. After a moment he just gave it up and told the truth. "Guess the thing is, I'd follow him anywhere. So that's that."

"I have a write-up of my pertinent medical history on my comms. I can transfer it to you if you'd rather." It's the commander in her that necessitated writing it down. She's only really willing to be this open about such things with a doctor, but she's been in more than one situation where having a regenerist or a physician know the extent of someone's history saved their life. She's stubborn, not stupid. Fine line she doesn't often cross.

(You're a little obvious, Bones, but in all honesty it's more Jim than you that's given the game away. Though all that talk about following him anywhere doesn't lend itself to debunking her theories.)

It's cute. Shai keeps herself well away from anything involving feelings, but she always appreciates when other people find happiness for themselves.

"He's a very followable sort, that fellow. I can certainly see the allure." If Liranya walked straight down into the molten heart of a sun she would follow apace, so she Gets It, even if the circumstances of their relationships are surely different. Liranya mourns a husband lost lifetimes ago, and Shai-- well, she has her issues.

Her expression softens a bit, though, easing back out of the gently teasing veneer she usually wears. "I'm sorry about your former partner, though. And your child. Imagine that must be difficult to live with."

"That would be more than useful, yes. Best to always know your patient well before treatment." And not even just in the field like this. Should she ever get hurt later, he would be able to treat her appropriately and that always stood a better chance than going in blind. "Thank you."

And well, if he was tryin' not to make his feelings an open book, his head turning and eyes instantly finding Jim doin' whatever it was he was doin' likely didn't help that image none. Still, he found he always tended to mark his location in an area when he could. He likely always would. "He's got a lot of charisma to go with that big heart of his." He commented softly and shook his head. "And a whole lot of stupid idiotic stunts as well." And god, sometimes he'd like to shake the stupid out of him. But then Jim wouldn't be Jim.

Drawing his gaze back to Shai, he smiled at her wryly and shrugged slightly. "I loved her once. Then realized when things got busy and real bad, we weren't made for each other after all." Not just on her part, but his as well. He didn't blame her for everything, but he did blame her for taking everything including his daughter when she didn't deserve that much. "Yeah, main thing I miss is my little girl. Even if I lost her to the ex, least I used to be able to talk to her every week." Now that was an impossibility. "But I guess these people need our help, so I can't be too selfish."
