( closed ) lost research

who: Jim Kirk, Leonard McCoy, Peggy Carter, Re-L Mayer, Shai Ebbisaryn, Sans, Dick Grayson, Scott Lang, Yuuri Katsuki, Victor Nikiforov
what: a rescue mission
when: from May 15th through to the end of the month
where: abandoned area, along the river, the delta and the waterfalls; between the first and second walls
warnings: monster attacks, probably some injuries/blood, don't expect anything more than that; add any needed warnings on your own threads as needed, please!

Despite the risks, most of the journey was a fairly quiet one. A lot of hours walking, making their way along the riverside, trekking through the woods and across small clearings. When the sun set they'd set up camp somewhere, and as soon as it rose they got back to their feet and out towards the Delta underneath the waterfalls.

Jim made sure they had all they needed; maps, compasses, whatever devices that could help them navigate the terrain. As far as supplies went, they had plenty of covers and extra clothes to make sure they didn't suffer through the colder nights, but there were no luxuries out here. If it rained, they'd be mostly unprotected, and they could only shower and wash their clothes so long as they had the time and access to the stream of the river. There was plenty of food, hopefully enough to last them the round trip, but they also had a myriad of tools and weaponry needed for any hunting and scavenging so they didn't always have to consume from the food they'd brought along for the trip.

The creatures living out here were another concern, and on a journey this long, they were bound to run into something sooner or later. They should be packing enough weaponry to keep the team safe and everyone in one piece, though.

Hopefully, it would be worth it. Jim didn't even care if they didn't get their hands on any of that research— all he cared about was that there were people possibly lost and in danger out there, and he wanted to try and save them.

Hazel eyes lowered to the younger man's hands as they fidgeted with the paper like that. Boy looked nervous as hell and needed a little bit of comfort. He just wasn't sure how he should go about that. Where it was easy to get to know the guy again, he didn't want to make any assumptions.

"Look, it's only natural for people feel nervous. Hell, I know I feel that way every time I go out on somethin' like this." Even more so because he knew Jim would play the big damn hero and get himself hurt. "I remind myself that I have a bigger job to focus on. People rely on me to put 'em back together when they go to far or stretch themsevles too thin. Just remember, bein' brave's got nothin' to do with bein' fearless and everything to do with what you do in spite of bein' afraid."

Offering him a small smile, he reached out and lightly squeezed his shoulder. "It'll get better. Promise. But for starters, distractin' yourself helps."

Honestly, the idea of people relying on him for their health should terrify him. For a second, it almost does as his anxiety threatens to rear its head again. The doctor's words help, though, surprisingly.

"It's okay to be afraid," Yuuri murmurs, almost to himself. Suddenly, he realizes that the idea of possibly patching people up is far less scary than trying to fight and protect people through sheer strength alone. He's studied for this, shadowed Dr. McCoy at the hospital for experience--he's not going into this blind. Some of his panic begins to retreat, and Yuuri inhales deeply.

"Okay." Dr. McCoy's hand on his shoulder grounds him and Yuuri smiles back at him. "Better make sure we have all the supplies we need, then."

"Damn right it is." He moved that hand up to lightly ruffle Yuuri's hair before moving to go through his immediate medical kit to make sure he had the medicines he might need. "Told a good friend of mine once that it's our fear of death that keeps us alive. Granted, I would never tell him he's a good friend." Snorting softly, thinking of Spock just made him smirk a little.

Shuffling through the vials, he smiled to himself as Yuuri seemed to find his second wind. "Better be prepared, I say. Just remember, much as a doctor or medic may want, don't get in the way if we get in a tussle. Cause if we get hurt, that leaves the others with no help." First rule of field work, too bad he tended to break that rule quite often cause of Jim.

"Feelin' better about it?"

Yuuri lets out a squawk of surprise and immediately tries to flatten his hair again. It's a bit of a lost cause, considering how messy it is most of the time anyway. But besides that, there's a blossom of warmth in his chest. When's the last time anyone's ruffled his hair like that? His sister, maybe, before he left to train in the States. Though Dr. McCoy had been incredibly accepting of him in this new city, it's really this gesture that makes it sink in fully.

He's practically beaming when he looks at the doctor again.

"Yeah--I am. Thanks." This time, he's able to smooth out the list and stop himself from fiddling with it nervously. "Oh, I... it wouldn't be a good idea for me to jump in anyway. I've been practicing defense, but I don't think I'd be able to help that much in a real fight."

Yuuri suddenly perks up with curiosity. "Did you ever get any kind of combat training when you joined Jim on the Enterprise?"

The doctor chuckled at that reaction and gave him a warm fond smile before returning to his own work. Not that it meant he wasn't listenin'. No, he made a point to keep his attention on both his assistant and the work at hand. Mainly keying up any information that was known that the researchers might've been working on so he could try to be ready for whatever might've happened.

"Good to hear it." He paused in his reading to look over at Yuuri with a thoughtful expression. Reaching up, he ran a hand through his hair slowly. "Every Starfleet cadet goes through hand to hand training before they can graduate from the Academy. Jim is far better at it than me... Not that I can't do it. It's just..."

He pressed his lips together slowly before sighing. "As a doctor, my hands are the most important tool I own. That and a person that heals makes a promise to do no harm." His eyes dropped down to his hands and his brow furrowed slowly. "Not that I've always kept that promise." Because he would do anything for Jim and he didn't even need to ask him to.

Brief as their acquaintance-friendship has been, Yuuri's noticed that Dr. McCoy tended to keep to himself, and that's something he can relate to all too well. Knowing that as he does, Yuuri always takes careful note of whatever the doctor ends up sharing about himself.

"I... combat doesn't sit that well with me," Yuuri admits quietly as he searches the shelves for the bandages on the list. "I don't think I'm going to be that great at it even with a lot of practice, but I wanted to help the people I care about in some way, too."

He pauses. "I think I'm the same, though. I don't think I'll ever be able to really injure someone, but being in a place like this and Eluvio has made me do a lot of things I never thought I'd do either."

"I don't like combat. But I know the merits of self-defense and defending others can be important." He's learned that again and again since that first day of service on the Enterprise after smuggling Jim on board. After realizing if he hadn't, he would have been on the very deck that took the original CMO's life. Little things, like a damn chain reaction.

Shaking his head, he glanced up at Yuuri and offered him a small smile. "Nothin' wrong with not wanting to hurt another. I find that admirable. Most times I feel the same. But there are times when I have had to bite that down and do just that to protect what is most important to me."

Closing up his tricorder, he nudged the other softly. "If you want someone to teach you self defense, I'll do it. I'm sure Jim is a better choice, but if you want someone that gets it, I'll do it."

Yuuri smiles at him, just distracted enough to give Bones a nudge back without thinking too hard about it. "I wouldn't mind the extra practice. Someone's been teaching me how to fight, but I'm not picking it up too quickly. Even though I know it could be helpful in the end."

Another glance at the list, and another scan of the shelves for the next item they need to stock up on. He looks contemplative all the while. "Do you think it's just the world I grew up in? I'm used to things being pretty peaceful--none of the fighting and danger that I've run into since the first portal.

I wonder if I would've been more willing to learn all this if I'd come from a different world like yours."

"Oh? That person a good teacher?" He could tell that Yuuri isn't interested in the idea of learnin' that sort of thing. Not that he blamed him. He's been there before. He remembered that exact attitude.

"I didn't much either at first. I was just a country boy that never once had to fight. Well, beyond knockin' a guy out at prom cause he was hurtin' a girl." Rolling his eyes at himself, he knew that didn't help him much. Cause that got him Jocelyn, who landed back in bed with the same guy. Shaking his head, he glanced at Yuuri with an arched brow.

"Our world is peaceful. I joined Starfleet. The possibility of running into combative situations is why all cadets have to take hand-to-hand. The only reason I actually got my ass in gear was cause I didn't want to let Jim down." He rubbed at the back of his neck and hesitated at that. "See, that crazy guy planned to graduate in three years. If I planned to keep up with him, well... I needed to pass all my courses. Not just the ones I wanted to take. You do pretty crazy things for people you care about."

"Yeah." Yuuri's reply comes quickly. "Carolina's great. She's... a little no-nonsense, but at least I know that she's taking my training seriously, you know?" There's a certain kind of irony in Yuuri, of all people, saying that Carolina might be too serious.

Right. All of sudden, Yuuri's reminded that Leonard had gone into space for "that crazy guy" despite disliking space so much. His expression softens.

"Yeah... you're right about that," he says softly. Half a year ago, Yuuri never would have even considered picking up a weapon. Now, though, with people that he cares about at stake--with Viktor's safety at stake--Yuuri knows that there's really no option. He has to be able to defend himself against danger so he doesn't become a burden to the people around him.

"Good to know. Sometimes you have to deal with that sort of thing when you're against learning it to begin with. They basically held it over my head that if I didn't pass I'd never get to officer status no matter how good of a doctor I'd be." He made a face at that long talk with Pike before letting out a sigh. "And when you make a foolish promise like I did, you do or die." In theory, the idea was foolish. But Jim got him motivated like no one he'd ever met before. Well, it paid off regardless.

Cause even if the chances had been slim that he'd ever get the same assignment as Jim, he hoped he would as long as he kept up. In fact, it finally earned him a spot on the Enterprise on that awful distress call to Vulcan. Shaking his head, he took a deep breath and pushed those thoughts aside.

Turning his gaze back to the younger, he offered him a reassuring smile. "Looks like you know how I feel better than most. I know I'm ornery as a mule and I fuss enough to kick up a storm, but I do it cause no one else put that much effort or desire into keeping the brightest star in the universe burning. Let's just say I don't know what I'd do if I had to watch it burn out again." Shit. He'd not meant to say that. Straightening up, he turned back to his work. "Just take care of that person. Promise every effort you put into it will be worth it."
