OPEN / "Bring Yourself" Arts & Culture event!

who: Cameron Waltz and you!
what: "Bring Yourself" Arts & Culture event!
when: Today!
where: Riverside Community Centre.
warnings: None predicted.

Open invitation on the network!

The community center is normally a modest building, albeit one with a spectacular riverfront view. Tonight, it's putting on the ritz. Multicolored lanterns hang on either side of the sidewalk leading up to the front of the building, and music of all kinds, depending on what time it is, pours out of the open doors and into the street. Local vendors have set up small carts to show off their wares and offer small trinkets and fresh food for sale, displaying their local pride.

Inside, things have been completely redecorated for the event. It's a modern open concept gallery, with blank walls for artwork and written word, empty pedestals to display objects, and plenty of tables with chairs. Some pieces are already on display, from paintings to exotic foods. Small crowds gather around people telling stories or showing off their special skills and talents.

That music plays live from the small main stage overlooking a dance floor, both of which can be cleared for demonstrations of everything from dance to martial arts. Anything physical that requires that little bit of extra room.

Musicians are free to write their names for a time-slot on the stage, and can choose to be accompanied by the onsite pianist and guitarist, bring their own instruments or backup, or perform solo.

All throughout the room are food and drink stations, where staff serves wine, beer, limited spirits, and soft drinks. The exotic foods are on display here, from which the guests can help themselves. If you can imagine it, someone has managed to cook it.
At the far end of the building is an outdoor patio overlooking the river, with seating and torches to light the area through the night. Most displays of magic take place out there, where practitioners can go all-out casting their most extravagant spells.

The crowd ebbs and flows, gathering to socialize during lulls and splitting off to see new events and installations as they come in. Other than opening and closing statements by Cameron Waltz, there's very little structure.

Casual and relaxed, the focus is on learning, generating conversation, and meeting new people. It's an organized free-for-all, a mini festival dedicated to the celebration of the cultures and backgrounds of everyone in Riverview. And in a city made up of a thousand universes worth of people, there's more than enough to see.

[Characters can bring pieces with them as they arrive, and simply set themselves up around the room. Contributions aren't limited to art, anything goes! Feel free to play random observer/staff/performer NPCs. The party goes until midnight, have fun!]

Markus gave his friend a look not unlike ones he used to give Carl. "Jim, you forget that I was programmed to be a caretaker. I know that one does not get confined to a wheelchair because of something 'minor'."

Jim let out a soft sigh, rolling his eyes a little. "It's no big deal. I just got... stabbed. A little," he said, as though getting a little stabbed was less serious than being stabbed normally. "I'm all better now, I swear. I just have to let the injury heal a little more before I can get back up on my feet."

"I see." And he did. Jim was making his injury seem less severe so Markus wouldn't be as worried. "Then I hope you have a quick recovery."

"Thanks. It's going pretty well so far," he nodded. He didn't get an infection, which was a good start.

He nodded to the painting of him, smiling. "That looks really great. Almost as pretty as me," he joked. "I've got to do a drawing of you now, too."

Markus glanced between his painting and Jim, trying to see what the man meant. It wasn't an exact copy, but he thought he painted Jim fairly well. Maybe it was one of those "in the eye of the beholder" things. He turned his attention back to the captain.

"You don't have to, but I would be flattered if you did."

He was teasing, Markus. They really needed to work on that, huh.

"Brilliant," he smiled, nodding. "Can I move behind your table? You get me a sketchbook and I'll do it now."

"Now?" Markus repeated. "All right." He took one of his sketchpads and handed it over to Jim, making room for the man. He sat close by so he could watch Jim work.

Jim shrugged at the question. Why not? It wasn't like he had anything pressing to do, and they could spend a bit of time together at least. He pushed his wheelchair and rounded Markus's table, accepting the sketchpad and some pencils, crossing his legs to serve as leverage as he started doing a first vague sketch of Markus's figure.

"Have you started doing freelance work yet?"

"A little," he answered. "I still work in hospice, though now it's because I want to be there. A lot of the people there just need someone to spend time with them and talk to them. I can do that."
winscenario: (ninety six.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2018-10-09 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
"As long as you still enjoy doing it, I see no reason why you should stop," he shrugged. Breaking through his programming didn't necessarily have to mean that Markus needed to turn his back on everything that he was originally created for. If he did like caring for people, and keeping them company, then there was nothing wrong with still doing it now, so long as it was his choice.

Markus definitely understood the difference between doing something because he had to, and doing it because he wanted to. He wanted to listen to the hospice patients and spend time with them, and so he did it.

"Will we be playing chess again soon?" he wondered. "It may be a different outcome now that I've broken my programming."

"Yeah, I think so too. The game itself should play out differently, if nothing else," he agreed, eyes flicking up every so often as he worked on his sketch. "We can meet sometime. I've been staying at home as of late, so if you want to come by sometime, I'll most likely be there."

Markus was determined it would, and that he would beat Jim. "Carl stayed home most of the time," he remembered. "Of course, he was in a wheelchair because he was paralyzed." It was a bittersweet feeling whenever he thought about Carl; he missed the man very much and wished they could talk again.

"Hmm, my injury wasn't that severe, thankfully," he hummed, continuing to trace lines along the page. There was something in Markus's expression that he really liked; it always showed whenever he talked about Carl. "What kinds of paintings does Carl usually do?"
