OPEN / "Bring Yourself" Arts & Culture event!
who: Cameron Waltz and you!
what: "Bring Yourself" Arts & Culture event!
when: Today!
where: Riverside Community Centre.
warnings: None predicted.
Open invitation on the network!
The community center is normally a modest building, albeit one with a spectacular riverfront view. Tonight, it's putting on the ritz. Multicolored lanterns hang on either side of the sidewalk leading up to the front of the building, and music of all kinds, depending on what time it is, pours out of the open doors and into the street. Local vendors have set up small carts to show off their wares and offer small trinkets and fresh food for sale, displaying their local pride.
Inside, things have been completely redecorated for the event. It's a modern open concept gallery, with blank walls for artwork and written word, empty pedestals to display objects, and plenty of tables with chairs. Some pieces are already on display, from paintings to exotic foods. Small crowds gather around people telling stories or showing off their special skills and talents.
That music plays live from the small main stage overlooking a dance floor, both of which can be cleared for demonstrations of everything from dance to martial arts. Anything physical that requires that little bit of extra room.
Musicians are free to write their names for a time-slot on the stage, and can choose to be accompanied by the onsite pianist and guitarist, bring their own instruments or backup, or perform solo.
All throughout the room are food and drink stations, where staff serves wine, beer, limited spirits, and soft drinks. The exotic foods are on display here, from which the guests can help themselves. If you can imagine it, someone has managed to cook it.
At the far end of the building is an outdoor patio overlooking the river, with seating and torches to light the area through the night. Most displays of magic take place out there, where practitioners can go all-out casting their most extravagant spells.
The crowd ebbs and flows, gathering to socialize during lulls and splitting off to see new events and installations as they come in. Other than opening and closing statements by Cameron Waltz, there's very little structure.
Casual and relaxed, the focus is on learning, generating conversation, and meeting new people. It's an organized free-for-all, a mini festival dedicated to the celebration of the cultures and backgrounds of everyone in Riverview. And in a city made up of a thousand universes worth of people, there's more than enough to see.
[Characters can bring pieces with them as they arrive, and simply set themselves up around the room. Contributions aren't limited to art, anything goes! Feel free to play random observer/staff/performer NPCs. The party goes until midnight, have fun!]

He sits back, wiping his face with his sleeve, letting Simon’s offer hang in the air between them. It’s been an emotional night for Cam. So much has happened, nearly all of it good. If the event were a disaster he could fall into the safety of his crises-management role. Since everything is more or less going smoothly, he has be wholly present as himself, which is far more difficult when who he is at this moment. AKA an oversensitive disaster, and PR crises unto himself. That’s why he’s here, in the stairwell, because he’d already cried publicly once tonight, and he doesn’t need the population of Riverview thinking he’s emotionally unstable. Or a crybaby.
The latter of which he secretly and definitely is.
He looks beside himself to Simon, a ghost of a smile on his lips.]
Breathing would be helpful, thank you.

Well then.
[ He gets up, dusts himself off, and descends the stairs without further comment. Simon might not be entirely allergic to feelings, but he certainly breaks out in a rash if they get too near the surface. Most particularly with people he doesn't really know.
Cameron Waltz is a confusing case. He has no obligation to the man, no investment in him, no possession of or partnership with him. All they share is a face.
He feels like a moth drawn to the blue light of a bug zapper. Nothing so romantic as a candle. Fascinated by something and someone that can only end badly for him. To those who know this man, he will only ever be the one who looks like Cameron Waltz. He would be better off avoiding Waltz entirely.
At the bottom of the stairs, Simon pauses, before he opens the door and holds it like a perfect gentleman. ]
Age before beauty.

The night air is pleasantly cool against his face. No doubt Cam looks like a mess, flushed, wet, and puffy. He'll have to take care of his skin tonight to undo the damage of smoking, drinking, and crying.
Looking at Simon, with his fresh face and dark hair, free of greys, he can't help but wonder if Simon wakes up and look in the mirror to tired eyes, the lines surrounding them seemingly deeper each day?]
How old are you?
no subject
Simon tries not to think much about his age. He doesn’t do birthdays, doesn’t mention each year that passes. As long as he’s fit enough to do his work, what does the rest matter?
It doesn’t. It doesn’t at all. ]
Thirty-five, if you must know.

[Cam smirks back over his shoulder as he shrugs out of his suit jacket, draping it over one arm. It's almost too cold when his sweat and tear slicked skin starts to chill, but he's felt overheated for the better part of the night.
That, and he's a little drunk. Sometimes the clothes come off when he's had one too many glasses of Merlot.]
Where were you born? I can tell you're British. Well-bred, too, with that accent. Are you an Eton boy?
no subject
He wasn't born anywhere that matters, anymore. He didn't go to school anywhere worth remembering.
He keeps his eyes on the river, the splashes of moonlight across its surface. ]
Hardly of relevance here, is it?
no subject
[Cam shivers, walking the length of the alley towards the water. It is beautiful.]
The more you don't say, the more I learn about you.
Whoever you were on Earth, you don't have to be that person here. Someone you're ashamed of. You could start over. Do things differently. That's the beauty of this place. For many people, it's a new beginning.
no subject
Really, is that what my silence tells you?
[ He glares back out over the water. ]
Yes, I was an Eton boy. We lived in a mansion outside of Windsor, until I was thirteen. Th--
[ He cuts himself off, jaw working. It isn't like it's any secret that his parents were killed. It's not like Waltz doesn't already know they're dead. It's just something he doesn't talk about. Even less so now, when it feels all at once like it happened yesterday. Like he's living through the shock of it afresh now that he knows whose thugs pulled the trigger. ]
Why does it matter? I'm-- [ Simon cuts himself off again. He grits out his next words. ] I don't want to start over, thank you. I would prefer to go home.
no subject
[Cam listens to Simon, arms folded across his chest. He doesn't need to see Simon's face. He knows what his own face looks like when his voice sounds tight in that same way. They're so different, and yet so much the same.]
So would I. I've made many mistakes back home, many of which I can do my best not to repeat here, yet that life, mistakes and all, is the one I chose for myself. The life I love.
It's strange, isn't it? How much we can wish to take something back, but given the opportunity... we'll usually take the results of our struggles and failure to an easy life handed to us on a silver platter.
[A low laugh, shaking his head.]
Or maybe I've had too much Merlot.
no subject
You're a romantic.
[ He tucks his hands into the pockets of his slacks. ]
It's charming, in a naive sort of way.
no subject
[Not that Cam thinks Simon is a nihilist. No, Simon is softer than that. Cam can see it in his eyes.]
I wish I were naive again. I'd like to forget a lot of what I've seen and done.
[He looks back over his shoulder at the man whose face he shares.]
Wouldn't you?
no subject
Besides, that question. That question. He meets Cameron's gaze, real composure descending, his stomach knotting with emotions he still finds hard to name, though they've been companions to him for years. ]
I would rather know what the world is like than be ignorant of what it can do.
