A Whole New Outlook on Life
who: Keith and Shiro
what: Canon updates
when: today?
where: Voltron house
warnings: mentions of violence
[This time when those from Quarantine came bringing canisters, there were two for the paladins. One for Keith and one for Shiro. It was both a relief and a concern for Shiro. So he'd gotten one. He could finally figure out what had happened back home!
But at the same time, what if it was something he didn't want to know?
Well, only one way to find out. Shiro had made Keith agree that they would open the canisters at the same time, but he wanted to open his in his room. He figured he'd need some time to process what had happened and having the time to sit there with only his thoughts might do him good in that situation.
So he went up to his room and sat down, waiting patiently for the designated time to open it. When it came, he picked it up, trusting Keith was doing the same thing right now, and he opened it.
The wave of memories hit him like a ton of bricks and it was impossible to sort them all out in such a sort amount of time. The last thing he became aware of was the fact that his right arm was now missing before he blacked out, toppling to the floor.
Meanwhile, downstairs, Black suddenly realized what had happened and ran towards the stairs, pausing just below the turn in the staircase, reaching out to Keith to try and get him to help. Recently opening his own canister be damned!]

Red had come with him, and was sitting in her usual spot on the floor by the desk. It took a moment for everything to really settle in as to what had happened before he could feel Black pushing for him to respond.
The sensation was suddenly much stronger than only a few moments ago.]
I'm up... I'm up.
[Red rumbled from the floor.]
What...? [Keith mentally scrambled, trying to get things in his head straight, the fact that his shirt felt like he'd grown out of it years ago, and then he managed to stumble his way down the steps of his bed and into the other room.]
Shiro?
[Cue panic. The clarity of his memories hit him like a ton of bricks. Seeing Shiro on the floor was enough to kick everything back into alignment in his head, and he dashed in, carefully rolling him to his back. Any soreness lingering in his own bruises and the burn on his face was forgotten in favor of making sure Shiro was alive.]
Shiro. Shiro, come on. Wake up.
no subject
Shiro was still for probably what felt like forever then suddenly he gasped as though he had been holding his breath, suddenly sitting up before promptly slumping over against Keith. He wasn't quite entirely with it yet]
K-keith?
no subject
[Keith caught him, holding on tightly for a moment. He was scared. Did he need to find a healer?]
Are you okay? Do you need me to call for help?
no subject
[And he hasn't quite finished processing he's missing an arm. There was too much going on there at the moment then suddenly something became fact in his head as he looked at Keith and spotted the burn]
Keith... I'm so sorry. I didn't mean- I didn't want to do that.
no subject
[He gently helped Shiro up and got him settled on the bed.] Take it easy, okay? I don't know what it is about these canisters, but... the effects from it certainly can't be making anything else that's happened easier.
[Keith couldn't help the small wince at how changed Shiro looked.]
no subject
Shiro accepted the help off the floor. It was at this point that he fully processed he was missing his right arm when trying to use it for leverage didn't work at all. Black however, moved in close, using his head to help lift and then his shoulder to keep Shiro upright for the short trip to the bed]
I'll try. Yeah, that's probably not doing me any good right now.
no subject
[Almost killing each other was definitely not the most ideal way of getting someone back.]
no subject
[He already knows it. He was not in control; he would have done anything to hurt Keith in that moment. Something that is a fate worse than death... which is true]
I'm sorry for doing that. I just couldn't... stop.
no subject
[Keith reached over and put his hand on Shiro's. He could check out his own injuries later. Right now, Shiro needed help.]
I couldn't give up on you. I promised I never would.
no subject
You're not broken, Keith. You're a good kid.
Thank you... for never giving up on me.
no subject
I know. I know I'm not.
[It had taken him two years alone with his mom, reliving forced memories through flashes of time in a gravity well, but he'd finally figured that out. Though, being a good kid? Well, he knew his own past. He had to differ on that one. But he knew he tried to be a good person now. He gave Shiro a small smile.]
You didn't give up on me. It's because of you that I didn't end up in worse trouble than I already was. You gave me a second chance.
no subject
I'd do it all over again if I had to. I'd never give up on you either.
[A pause]
You should see someone. Make sure you're okay.
[And of course his own health? Not even considered]
no subject
I'm okay... you need to be looked at, too.
[Funny... where did he learn that? His dad or Shiro? Or both? Either way, he wanted to make sure Shiro was okay more than worrying about himself. Sure, he ached, and that burn definitely itched and felt pretty bad, but Shiro had lost his arm and almost died. So, that kind of trumped things in Keith's book.]
I can call for someone. It'll be okay.
no subject
If you let them look at your burn too.
[He already knew he wasn't going to win this argument if he felt like trying]
no subject
Okay. I promise.
no subject
[Shiro settled back against the pillows, Black having nudged more behind him while they were talking. He had to let go of Keith's hand to try and get himself settled more so he didn't feel like he was going to fall over]
no subject
I'll be back in a bit, okay? I just have to get my communicator.
no subject
That's fine. I'll be here. I doubt Black would let me go anywhere.
[The lion grumbled and they could both hear the response. Nope, Black was not letting him leave]
no subject
Okay. I'll go make a call.
[And he headed back to his room to grab his communicator.]
{OOC: Shall we close it there and assume Keith finds help?}
