001. WORK IT OUT
[ Early mornings were a staple in Re-L’s life before she’d arrived on the Eluvio or in the Quarantine, and nothing has really changed for her since her arrival. Her alarm goes off at a prompt 6 AM, and after a moment to gather herself, she quickly pulls herself out of bed to begin the first leg of her day : a nice 2 mile running circuit. It’s a rather quiet morning practice, honestly – she’s rather unassuming in her usual uniform of all black, heels traded for tennis shoes and dark hair tied up and out of her pale face. If the weather is hot enough she might even bless the Quarantine with an unusually “undone” outfit for Re-L – a little bit of middrift showing as she ditches a shirt in her room for a more simplistic leggings and sports bra look. It’s practical, at least.
- The safest bet, however, is that her make-up is still on for vanity’s sake, even as she’s sweating off the previous day’s stressors on her run.
Once her two miles worth of laps is under her belt there’s the predictable cool down walk to an open spot in a park where she can get to stretching and some body weight strength training. All this in the early hours of the morning, every single day without fail, except maybe for a lazy Saturday every now and then. It’s an easy enough to track habit, should anyone wish to join her in her fitness efforts.
She may not even notice, at first, if focused enough. ]
002. BAD KIDS
[ During day time hours it’s easiest to find Re-L in one of two places: police headquarters with her head buried in a case or ten, or the café with a new volume in her hands to read.
Her work areas at Headquarters are always kept pristine and organized, her assigned cases outside of her assigned watch points organized in rather meticulous files. Small, looping cursive notes dot paperwork she keeps with observations and notes on locations and suspicious circumstances, the lot. Her natural curiosity and, at times, just being plain nosey has already been a bit of a thorn in the side for those looking to be a bit nefarious, but… Stay out of nefarious dealings and maybe she won’t have to lend voice to a conviction.
In the café she’s easiest found tucked away in a quiet corner, either with a hard volume or whatever she has uploaded in her holojournal. Flicking through pages and occasionally making some kind of note about some line or another, seemingly absorbed in taking in the information in front of her. Interruptions won’t be too unwelcome, though – she’s already read many of these passages before. ]
0003. IT’S 3 AM
[ Early mornings collide with late nights with regularity – at least as often as her body and sleep schedule can take. It isn’t unusual to find a certain darkly dressed woman wandering the streets of the Quarantine late at night and in the early hours of the morning, exploring the small crevices and forgotten alleyways. This practice is just as much for her curiosity as it is her edification should she ever have to escape the city quickly. Mental maps are drawn with increasing detail in her wanderings, more often a passing shadow in the night than a talkative creature, though..
Well, it’s pretty safe to say she’s going to assume most people wandering in the dark of night are up to something they shouldn’t be, despite her own appearance in the streets late at night – prime for questioning to see what the hell she’s up to in the wee hours of the morning, right? ]

When she approaches him as he's heading back from the rink, Yuuri freezes in his steps for a moment. Recognition makes him relax again.]
Re-L? [Yuuri shifts the duffel bag on his shoulder.] You're out late tonight.
[Never mind that he's doing the same.]

[ Back in Romdau it would've been looked down upon to be out and about at such an ungodly hour for any other reason than a newly discovered crime that needed investigating - thankfully, having grown up in the dome, the place became a well known map in her mind regardless. Riverview... like the Eluvio.. was a place that had to be learned in all of its back alleys and intricacies. If she hadn't been charged with police work, this would be less of a priority, however... she had a sneaking suspicion that this may be knowledge she'll need in the immediate future. It was only the annoyance called the sun and the fact that she was... a bit remiss with talking to too many people that prevented her from doing this in the light of day.
Plus.. she could be a little more nosey with no one around to grow suspicious.
Seeing Yuuri was a little bit of a surprise, though she's more bemused than anything else. ]
I could say the same for you, you know. [ Her brow arches for a moment before dropping, again neutral. ] Finding the nooks and crannies of this place is easier at night.

[It's his turn to raise his brows at her.]
Oh, that's what you were doing. [Somehow, he isn't too surprised.] What are you hoping to find?

One day I may have time to learn a little skating. [ More than likely she wouldn't have too much trouble. Daedalus had tried to teach her things like ballet as a child but her patience had been much more lacking than it was now, then. She hadn't had the attention span for it, and so they'd moved on to something a little more active to take care of all that excess energy. ]
Escape routes, if need be. Mainly the back places that anyone in the police force ought to know about if they're going to be finding.. let's say the less savory of this place, to be proper... [ Extracurricular work on top of her 'training', if anything. Perfectionism has its pit falls. ]
If I happen to find anything secretive at the same time.. all the better.

Haven't found anything yet? [Yuuri looks at her thoughtfully.] I've been looking in the library for more information on this place. The people here seem to be more willing to explain things to us, too.
["Unlike the crew we were dealing with before" he doesn't have to say.]

I'd be open to a lesson or two, someday. That's not to say that I won't end up disliking it, though. [ There's the immediate rising need, slightly, to temper his expectations. She was fairly graceful, but that wasn't to say that failure for too long wouldn't mean a rage quit from Re-L either. Dealing with failure for very long wasn't exactly her style, even if it was over something as simple as keeping balance on a thin skate. ]
Not as of yet, no. I'm sure I will eventually. [ She hadn't yet made it outside of the philosophy section every time wandering to the library had occurred to her as a way to pass time on her days off. There were enough that she'd never read to make that feat just a little too hard. ]
Anything interesting come up in that? I've been.. preoccupied by their philosophy selection ..
[ Oops. ]

Mmm I found a few things while I was looking up information about the portal. [There's a flicker of a grin at what she admits. Now that he thinks about it, she did mention liking philosophy before, didn't she?] It's...not a lot, but it sounds like this place had a lot more portals once. There was a war not too long ago--it's why they want us to stay here, I think.

Maybe after we're back from the mission and have some time to recover, you think? [ She doesn't want to stack her calendar too entirely terribly, after all. There's a part of her that wholly believes that she'd rather spend time in a bath tub every day for a few days after they return just to scrub the left overs off. ]
Oh? You haven't shared any of it with me. [ Partially teasing, partially guilting, on that note. ]
A war ... and since this is called the Quarantine, a disease, maybe... Probably shouldn't think too far in to that for my own sanity, though, if I'm honest.
no subject
[A pause, then somewhat wonderingly--] Oh, that's right, you're going on that mission, too. This will be the first mission we've gone on together.
no subject
Yes, well, a little collaboration wouldn't go astray either, don't you think? [ At least from sources she trusted like Yuuri. Other people she might just have to check sources a little more thoroughly, if she's honest, but of course there's no hint that she's even had the thought in her mind at the moment. She is working toward knowing more and more about the new place she was calling 'home' - even if it was in the dead of night when it might seem kind of suspicious from darkly dressed person. There's always a chance someone may think she's a burglar, or something, but so far no one's stopped her, and so she'd continue on. ]
I wouldn't mind hearing some about that. I've been mostly concerned with learning the streets and all, if they're going to want me to be a beat cop for a little while... Knowing streets and where everything goes will be important..
[ She gives a small hum of agreement and a nod as he brings up the mission and the fact that this will be the first one they go on together, taking a moment to study another passerby. ]
Yes, it will be. I'll hope that means it will be quiet, but I think we both know better than to be too sure on anything to do with that.

Anyway, there's not too much more to the story. The portal we came out of is the only natural one; the others they had before were copies of this one. [He pauses.] Apparently... the people who lived here ended up using the portals to take resources from other universes, and that's how the war got started.
no subject
Well, other groups of people generally do not take it well when one is flourishing over the other... [ That little human emotion called jealousy that sh'd often shoved down now that she was out of Romdeau when it came to the freedoms other people had, namely. She knows, mentally, that even feeling it was kind of worthless, but it doesn't stop it from happening, either. ]
And they still profit off of the riches of other universes - bringing people here and the lot.
Does it seem to you that there's any particular... mmn.. rhyme or reason as to who comes here or not, though?
no subject
There's... what they told us during orientation. That thing about the portal latching onto people who feel like they need a new home.
no subject
I could think of someone far more capable of a fight than myself, still living, back in my world, too. [ One Vincent Law. She wasn't sure if she'd be happy to see him show up in Riverview, and not because of his own doing. He wanted so badly to figure himself out, and being yanked from place to place - She shakes herself from the thought, as if she might will his appearance upon him, blinking a few times before turning her attention back to Yuuri.
That part of the orientation had most stuck with her, if she's honest. She takes a breath in, seems to pause, and then - ]
Well, the Eluvio was not my favorite place to be, so I suppose that could be the reason for the three of us on the whole.
no subject
He turns his troubled gaze on her.] No... I don't think it was for all of us. Once we realized how much the Captain and his crew were hiding from us, and those murders... [Yuuri's jaw clenches.] It was hard to feel like we belonged there after all that, even if we were still stuck in that universe. It didn't feel...safe.
no subject
Exactly. I would have rather gone home, as well, but it is what it is. We're searching for a home there, too, so it may not have been any different. Or perhaps why I wasn't returned instead of being brought here... [ It was all a very confusing things, honestly. She wasn't sure what the hell she wanted to do at the moment - on one hand being here isn't too bad, on the other... she's very concerned for Vincent and the others. She's not been away from them for this long before, and she wonders how they're taking her disappearance. Vincent, for one, was probably worrying himself sick. ]
Really, the only way to make me more content would be to bring Vincent here, too. The others are autoreivs, they'll be fine regardless.
