memoria

In the days leading up to May 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Memoria. A more solemn celebration than Sampremi or the Flower Festival, Memoria is a week-long time of remembrance for those lost in the Great War and the epidemic that decimated Riverview Quarantine's population 10 years ago. Memoria traditions include lighting lanterns for the dead, telling stories about lost loved ones or lost homes, eating meals with loved ones, and a special gathering to send floating lanterns down the river in honor of those lost.

a solemn commemoration of those lost

While the main city-wide event associated with Memoria is the floating of lanterns down the river on the evening of May 8th, the holiday is generally seen as a time of reflection on and appreciation of things that have been lost - people, homes, cultures, and planets. It is also a celebration of the things that remain. Many locally-owned shops will host displays of culturally-significant food, and will hand out informational flyers sharing the unique customs of their own homeworlds. There is a heavy emphasis on sharing time with family, friends, and lovers, and anyone who is able to will cook meals or treats for loved ones, or at least purchase them something good to eat.

i. hanging lanterns

Throughout the entire week of Memoria, residents will be hanging lanterns around the city. Lanterns are generally placed in greater number in places of passage - streets, bridges, and all alongside the train lines are particularly well-decorated, as are any trees alongside paths, and most homes and businesses have a profusion of lanterns around their doors and windows. This tradition is twofold; some people believe that the lanterns are hung in these places in order to guide the spirits of the dead back to those who still love them, other people believe that the lanterns are to give light for living loved ones to find their doors in times of darkness...many people believe both.

No matter what your character might believe, you can be sure they will find themselves offered a lantern for free from various businesses or friendly citizens passing by, and invited to hang it before the sun sets, or they may be handed a bundle of lanterns and asked to help share them with others.

ii. sharing life

Throughout the city, characters will find groups of people gathering to share hot drinks and talk about their loved ones lost, their homes and planets, or their experiences during the Great War and the epidemic. Anyone who has lost someone, who has fought to survive, who is feeling cut off and homesick, is welcome to sit and share their story. If your character chooses to sit and to share their story, they will find that people will gather to listen, will generally be respectful of the telling, and may share their own similar experiences in return. This is an excellent time to air grief in an environment where most people understand and respect grief, and a good time to deepen the connections to others around you, to understand them better.

There is also a very large focus on cooking or purchasing meals or treats for loved ones during Memoria, with many people taking meals with everyone they care about during the week of the holiday. Some go the extra mile and will hand out baked goods (usually chocolate or cinnamon), packets of candy, or other little treats to acquaintances, especially if they would like to form a closer bond with them. This is a great time for characters to reach out to someone they would like to get to know better with a surprise treat!

iii. floating of the lanterns

On the evening of May 8th, just before sundown, many of the city's residents will head toward the banks of the river, where they will light lanterns in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, in honor of their dead loved ones. The types of lanterns vary wildly, based on personality (either of the person floating it or the person they are honoring), culture, and many other factors. Some lanterns are very simple, others are incredibly complex, but the one common feature they all have is that people write on the shades of them - they write about their feelings for their loved ones, their wishes for their relationships and friendships, a memory from childhood or home, or even just lines of poetry or lyrics from songs that express something they miss, or something that hurts them.

Once those emotions are written on the lanterns, the lanterns are set free, floating down the river in the darkening evening, in a cathartic gesture shared by most residents of the city. Waves of lantern floating will start around 7 pm and continue until the sun rises on the morning of May 9th.

iv. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during Memoria, feel free to write it up!

ultimates issues

[It hurts Steve to see the man like this. It hurts his pride, knowing he can't necessarily help in the long run, that has to be Tony's choice, and it hurts to watch him fumble with his balance when he's clearly sick already. But worse than that is when Tony talks, falling into a conversation that might actually be familiar to him. The ghost of a time he himself still remembers, but has lost.

Steve reaches out to steady Tony, supporting his weight with an arm around his back, leading him away from the table.]

No armor. Not tonight. We're going to head home and regroup.

[He hopes that Tony won't try to get in his armor while caught up in a drunk memory. Steve silently decides he'd better keep watch just in case.]

[If there's no emergency and it's Steve here to pick him up, he must be a bigger mess than usual. Steve had done his fair share over the years, but he had bigger constraints on his time with trying to keep their nation running so it was hardly fair to expect him to chase after Tony.

Steve has to carry most of his weight which means it's a lot more obvious what he is or more accurately isn't eating. He isn't dangerously underweight, but nutrition hadn't been a priority.]

Oh. What about Carol?

[There's something niggling at him about this whole thing in the back of his head, but he ignores it.]

...Can I be your vice president if I distract her?

[Tony's condition is painfully clear when Steve holds him up. He is struck by how weak the man seems. The drinking already bothers him, but this just makes it worse. It makes Steve wonder what kind of friends Tony had in his world, and if they would have come to get him if they were there. He holds Tony up and leads him away from his litter of empty bottles, sighing to himself at how close to home this feels. It's too familiar for comfort.]

Carol isn't here, Tony. And you can't be anyone's vice president until you get some sleep.

[Steve knows that what he says probably isn't reaching him. The man is so drunk that it's difficult to tell what he's really getting out of the moment, but if he can get him home and cleaned up that at least will be an improvement. The absent rambling from Tony about Carol apparently being his vice president makes Steve raise both eyebrows, but he must be mistaken.]

You shouldn't have come out here by yourself.
inebriety: (tony › such a mess)

[personal profile] inebriety 2017-05-27 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Tony makes a half-hearted attempt to shake his head that gets aborted when it makes everything spin more. He doesn't want to sleep unless he passes out. He has too many nightmares for anything resembling a good night's sleep otherwise.]

Thor's still moping, you don't like hanging out with me, Monica's got SHIELD stuff and Clint hasn't been the same since... you know.

[He is trying to walk as well, but it might be a lot easier for Steve to more or less drag him along.]

[He doesn't know and Tony's rambling just makes Steve think even more that his friend from another world is in bad shape. He pulls him out of the bar and down the street toward the housing building, then pauses as he realizes he's basically walking a cat on a leash--Tony isn't so much walking as being pulled.]

You need to call me. I'd rather you did that then hang out in this place by yourself.

[Steve puts his hand on Tony's back and walks with him, guiding him instead of leading him because he's honestly not sure if the man can even see clearly at this point. Probably not.]

Do you do this a lot?
inebriety: (tony › o captain my captain)

[personal profile] inebriety 2017-06-22 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
[A part of Tony can recognise that Steve is behaving very oddly, but he doesn't quite make the connection just yet. He subconsciously doesn't want to acknowledge what is going on.]

Not when I was still taking my meds. I learned my lesson from last time.

[Their pace starts to drag significantly when Steve switches from pulling him along to helping.]
livingsymbol: ([S] OBJECTION!!)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-07-09 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It's like Steve's support just slows them down. When he's not pulling, Tony just lets the pace slow to a stop. He frowns, wondering if he really was the only thing moving them along. He stops temporarily. ]

But you aren't taking them? That sounds like a bad idea.

[ He's fighting the urge to tell Tony what he thinks of the drinking. It's a hard struggle, because Steve wants to tell the man that he shouldn't be alone in a bar passing out drunk like this.

That never worked before. It'll just drive him further into it. Steve bites his tongue and takes a breath. Cool it. Just- try to be supportive. Yeah. ]

You need to stay in touch. What if I need you?

[ ...It's harder than fighting. ]
inebriety: (tony › pigeon watching)

seriously this is excessive

[personal profile] inebriety 2017-07-11 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
[Things that would help Tony: Getting told to stop drinking because someone cares.

Things that Steve isn't doing: That.]

You've always known I'm on borrowed time. It was always a race to see what got to me first. I asked him not to grow, but we'll have to wait and see.

[He awkwardly pats Steve on the shoulder.]</small. You'll be fine, you'll all be billionaires when I go. Don't smother me in my sleep because I said that, there's a murder clause in my will.
livingsymbol: ([Cap] Princess Lashes Rogers)

He needs a hug!

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-07-12 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
[ He knows that Tony is drunk and coming from a world where the rules are different, but Steve can't stand what the man says. That answer is just wrong. ]

I don't need other billionaires, Tony. I need you. You're my friend. If this is borrowed time, then don't help it along. You don't have to race to beat it with alcohol. I can't stand watching you do this to yourself.

[ Maybe Tony is too drunk and he won't remember this later. Or he's so caught up in talking to the shadows of his own world he won't think Steve said it. He does anyway, because it's true. ]
inebriety: (tony › checking)

then hug him also why didn't you tell me about my html

[personal profile] inebriety 2017-07-16 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
[And that's a little too far-fetched for his denial. Tony stills then shakes his head and aborts the motion since it's making him sick.]

Wow, I am seriously hallucinating.
livingsymbol: ([S] modeling for that superhero porn)

hugs are hard and oops?

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-07-20 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not hallucinating. Keep walking, we need to go home.

[ It feels like he's pulling Tony along, and once they finally get out of the bar, Steve debates whether it might be easier to just carry him. Chances are Tony won't even notice anyway. ]

Do you remember coming here?
inebriety: (tony › don't you love me)

smh on both

[personal profile] inebriety 2017-07-23 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm definitely hallucinating. It's a symptom which you already know since I'm imagining you.

[Tony has more or less stopped making even the vaguest attempt at moving on his own free will since he figures he's actually passed out on the ground somewhere.]

And why are you asking this? You should know that already.
livingsymbol: ([S] Son I'm not mad just disappointed.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-08-02 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
If I'm just your hallucination, then I wouldn't need to ask.

[ Wow, Tony, what a mess. Steve sighs. They aren't getting anywhere anyway, so he stops trying to half-haul the man along and just mulls over what is happening. ]

... If I sit back down with you, can we talk? Will you hold off on the drinks for me?
