memoria

In the days leading up to May 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Memoria. A more solemn celebration than Sampremi or the Flower Festival, Memoria is a week-long time of remembrance for those lost in the Great War and the epidemic that decimated Riverview Quarantine's population 10 years ago. Memoria traditions include lighting lanterns for the dead, telling stories about lost loved ones or lost homes, eating meals with loved ones, and a special gathering to send floating lanterns down the river in honor of those lost.

a solemn commemoration of those lost

While the main city-wide event associated with Memoria is the floating of lanterns down the river on the evening of May 8th, the holiday is generally seen as a time of reflection on and appreciation of things that have been lost - people, homes, cultures, and planets. It is also a celebration of the things that remain. Many locally-owned shops will host displays of culturally-significant food, and will hand out informational flyers sharing the unique customs of their own homeworlds. There is a heavy emphasis on sharing time with family, friends, and lovers, and anyone who is able to will cook meals or treats for loved ones, or at least purchase them something good to eat.

i. hanging lanterns

Throughout the entire week of Memoria, residents will be hanging lanterns around the city. Lanterns are generally placed in greater number in places of passage - streets, bridges, and all alongside the train lines are particularly well-decorated, as are any trees alongside paths, and most homes and businesses have a profusion of lanterns around their doors and windows. This tradition is twofold; some people believe that the lanterns are hung in these places in order to guide the spirits of the dead back to those who still love them, other people believe that the lanterns are to give light for living loved ones to find their doors in times of darkness...many people believe both.

No matter what your character might believe, you can be sure they will find themselves offered a lantern for free from various businesses or friendly citizens passing by, and invited to hang it before the sun sets, or they may be handed a bundle of lanterns and asked to help share them with others.

ii. sharing life

Throughout the city, characters will find groups of people gathering to share hot drinks and talk about their loved ones lost, their homes and planets, or their experiences during the Great War and the epidemic. Anyone who has lost someone, who has fought to survive, who is feeling cut off and homesick, is welcome to sit and share their story. If your character chooses to sit and to share their story, they will find that people will gather to listen, will generally be respectful of the telling, and may share their own similar experiences in return. This is an excellent time to air grief in an environment where most people understand and respect grief, and a good time to deepen the connections to others around you, to understand them better.

There is also a very large focus on cooking or purchasing meals or treats for loved ones during Memoria, with many people taking meals with everyone they care about during the week of the holiday. Some go the extra mile and will hand out baked goods (usually chocolate or cinnamon), packets of candy, or other little treats to acquaintances, especially if they would like to form a closer bond with them. This is a great time for characters to reach out to someone they would like to get to know better with a surprise treat!

iii. floating of the lanterns

On the evening of May 8th, just before sundown, many of the city's residents will head toward the banks of the river, where they will light lanterns in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, in honor of their dead loved ones. The types of lanterns vary wildly, based on personality (either of the person floating it or the person they are honoring), culture, and many other factors. Some lanterns are very simple, others are incredibly complex, but the one common feature they all have is that people write on the shades of them - they write about their feelings for their loved ones, their wishes for their relationships and friendships, a memory from childhood or home, or even just lines of poetry or lyrics from songs that express something they miss, or something that hurts them.

Once those emotions are written on the lanterns, the lanterns are set free, floating down the river in the darkening evening, in a cathartic gesture shared by most residents of the city. Waves of lantern floating will start around 7 pm and continue until the sun rises on the morning of May 9th.

iv. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during Memoria, feel free to write it up!

[She takes a deep breath, and focuses. Many people around, so she must make sure this is extra precise.]

There.

[She jumps into the air! Well, more like launches herself into the air, judging by the height of the jump. Side spinning mid-air to extend the distance she covers, she manages to land in front of the cat - not right in front though, since she aimed for an opening without anyone around.

The cat jumps in surprise at first, but immediately tries to run around her as she's still in her landing pose.]

Ah...
earthy: ([ ?! recoil ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-05-12 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
[A shadow passes overhead and Terra watches as the woman in black suddenly lands near the cat, apparently completing one super long jump. Or did she fly?

... Either way, it's impressive.

Though Terra forgets his awe when he sees the cat regain its senses and dash around the woman.]

I don't think so!

[Catching up to them, he lunges awkwardly, diving to grab the cat and feeling his hands close over fur.]

Got you!

[The next thing he feels is many needle-like claws connecting with his face.

A strangled shout tears itself from his throat as he lets go of the cat and clutches his wounded face instead.

Cat's not giving up the lantern that easily.]

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-05-12 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! Are you alright?

[She calls out to Terra, but not losing the animal is a higher priority now. She's close enough to leap at it as well, one hand trying to grab for the lantern, the other for the cat.

The cat responds by furiously clawing both.]

Ow. Ow.

[Monotone voice of pain.]
earthy: ([ → train ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-05-14 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
[Flat though those pained sounds may be, they rouse Terra from his... facial suffering. His hands drop away from his head and he lurches back up onto his feet.

It's one thing for the cat to attack him... but for it to lash out at the woman who was only trying to help...

Terra snaps his right hand out at his side and his Keyblade materializes in his grasp. It takes him a second to 'lock on', to focus and make sure his heart targets the cat and only the cat, and then he's thrusting the gold blade up and out into the air. Sleep. White light bursts from the end of the blade and pulses out around him in a swirl of cloudy energy. It's a short-range spell but the woman's quick-thinking has ensured that the cat's still near enough to him for him to use it.

The magic hits the cat mid-mauling and it promptly slumps over, emitting a squeaky cat snore.

Terra stares at the cat a few moments longer before straightening and looking to the woman in black with clear concern in his eyes. His eyes framed by so many jagged red lines. Thanks, cat.]

Are you all right?

[Boy, the crowd here's gotten a bit of a show.]

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-05-14 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[She responds after a small delay, both sounding and looking surprised at the whole turn of events.]

Yes. I didn't expect a creature so small to offer so much resistance... I'm not seriously damaged though.

[2B lets go of the cat. It won't run anymore, so it's time to retrieve the lantern. Somehow, it seems the mission was a full success.]

What was that, just now?
earthy: ([ ← pause ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-05-19 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
You've gotta watch out for the small monsters sometimes. [Monsters, cats, same difference.] Looks can be deceiving.

[So very deceiving.

Confusion joins the concern in Terra's gaze. 'Damaged' sure is a funny way of saying hurt... But to her question-]
Magic?

[He assumes she means the spell and so gives her another demonstration, repeating the same up-and-out motion with the Keyblade. This time, the swirl of energy is green and concentrated around his body. Light takes the form of a blooming flower over his head, with petals floating down around him. The magic lasts only a second or two, but when the light fades, his face is completely healed, with not even a hint of a scar left behind.]

Sleep and Cure spells... Are you sure you're okay?

[His eyes fall to her hands, searching for any wounds he might be able to patch up with his Curaga.]
howlongiwonder: (surprise)

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-05-19 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Humans don't seem to mind having them around, however.

[Once again she states something in a strange way. 2B's attention drifts away from cats and towards the spell demonstration. She observes the cure with wide eyes, not that Terra can tell because, you know, blindfold.]

So it's magic, then? More humans can use this power than I thought...

Ah, but yes. I am fine. Look.

[She opens her hands. The gloves have some rips on them now, courtesy of a jerk animal, but her hands look perfectly normal underneath. Not even a single scratch present.]
earthy: ([ ← uneasy ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-05-22 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Not even a scratch... Terra frowns slightly but nods and, having no further use of the weapon, dismisses the Keyblade in a spiral of light.

He looks to the cat again and bends down to scoop it up under its 'armpits'. He can't just leave it here where someone might step on it. Even if it is a thief. A bit stiffly, as might be expected from a man with zero cat handling experience, he transports the tabby over to the side of the road and sets it down on top of a crate someone's left behind.

There.

Now the woman in black...

Terra turns and heads back toward her, stopping a short distance away. He can't help but start thinking about all those little oddities. Not even a scratch despite the cat's wild attack, her choice of the word 'damaged' when she reassured him she wasn't badly injured... and the way she keeps referring to people as 'humans'...

(The blindfold she can somehow see through is kind of strange, too, but he figures it's probably just the fashion in her home world. What other reason could someone possibly have for wearing a blindfold when they're out on the streets?)

Something's up here... but what?]

... Thanks for your help. I don't know if I could have gotten the lantern back by myself.

[He proceeds with a measure of caution, trying to puzzle out the mystery all on his own. After all, it might be rude to ask...]

I'm Terra. [He makes a subdued gesture to himself then motions to her.] What's your name?
howlongiwonder: (stare)

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-05-22 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry about it.

[She replies with some awkwardness, Terra's reluctance not having escaped her - though the reasons for it remain a mystery.]

I'm YoRHa unit 2 type B. "2B" is fine.

[She tries to introduce herself in a more casual manner - but, well, that name leaves very little to imagination, doesn't it?]
earthy: ([ ? mistake ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-05-22 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yor-what? Unit? Type?

......... Okay, you know what, the worlds aren't going to end if he's a little rude.]

What are you...?
howlongiwonder: (Default)

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-05-23 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an android. An artificially created being built to serve and protect humanity.

[This may explain why she helped a random stranger so readily. Or maybe there's another reason.]

However, I found myself here now, and it seems androids like me are a rarity in this city...
earthy: ([ ! wonder ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-05-23 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Android...? [That's a new word for him. An 'artificially created being'...]

Like a machine?

[She looks so... 'human', though.]
howlongiwonder: (stare)

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-05-23 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but androids are made to resemble human beings. Machine lifeforms are... different.

[Strange choice of words aside, she tends to sound pretty human too. Including reluctance in her voice right now.]
earthy: ([ ← indifferent ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-05-25 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Different, huh...? That reluctance keeps him from pressing the subject. There's something he's more curious about, anyway.]

And you said there aren't many... androids here. Have you seen anyone you recognize from your world?
howlongiwonder: (stare)

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-05-25 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

[A quick answer.]

There's only me that I know of.

[Well. That is a bit awkward.]
earthy: ([ → issue ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-05-28 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
[Terra nods a little, thinking nothing of how quickly she replied.

He considers telling her he suspects he's the only one from his 'world' here, too, but it seems like... cold comfort. He might be the only one from his dimension, but he's sure not the only one of his kind here.

He finds another question to ask instead.]

How long have you been here, if you don't mind me asking?
howlongiwonder: (conversation)

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-05-28 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thirty four days.

[Once again an immediate answer, but for a different reason. Androids are just very precise regarding this kind of thing.]

It is not long, I know of residents who have been here for months, and sometimes even years. They all came from various locations across different worlds.
earthy: ([ ← troubled ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-05-28 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
About a month ago... I got pulled in around then, too. [He hasn't been keeping count of the days.] Or a little later, actually...

[He reaches for the lantern, his expression pensive. Yeah, some people have been here for quite a while... That was their choice, their decision. To start a new life in Riverview rather than go back to where they came from.]

Are you planning on staying?
howlongiwonder: (focus)

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-05-28 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
... No. Not any longer than necessary.

[The words escape 2B's mouth with some hesitation, but in the end, it was never a secret to anyone she knows. She will go back, certainly.]

I'll just have to make sure bringing me here wasn't a waste, first.
earthy: ([ ← interest ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-05-29 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Make sure bringing you here wasn't a waste? You mean, doing the work they require? The... community service?

[There's a hint of frustration there in those last two words... but only a hint.]
howlongiwonder: (conversation)

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-05-29 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Something like that.

[Does she notice the frustrated tone? If she does, she doesn't comment on it.]

My assistance here is also, in a way, a part of that. It's no problem.
earthy: ([ ← neutral ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-05-31 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Terra thinks he understands.]

I've been doing everything I can to get back, too.

[He turns the lantern in his hands, absently checking it for damage.]

All of this is wrong. This... taking people from their worlds business.

[The frustration sticks in his voice but doesn't graduate to any kind of real anger. He's come to find out it's a pretty complicated situation, in general and for some people specifically. Like people who have nothing to go back to.]
howlongiwonder: (contemplation)

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-05-31 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's a selfish thing, isn't it? Force your will on others to save yourself.

But this kind of thing happens all the time, not just here. Everywhere. At least the local authorities allow you to eventually go back...

[Hard to say if 2B is happy with how the Quarantine is being run or not. Mostly she sounds melancholic right now.]
earthy: ([ ← troubled ])

[personal profile] earthy 2017-06-02 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
[Terra's eyes narrow and his fingertips dig against the lantern.]

Yeah... [He doesn't think anything quite like this has ever happened where he's from... He would have heard about it and been sent to stop it, if it had.

But this definitely isn't the first time someone's tried to save themselves by forcing their will on someone else, that's for sure.

She has a point about them at least being willing to let people go, too. How much worse would this all be if they were just trapping people here indefinitely, refusing to give them any say in their fate?

... Anyway.]

I should get this lantern back to the old woman. Thanks again for your help, Toobee. [... He'll figure out the spelling someday.]
howlongiwonder: (Default)

[personal profile] howlongiwonder 2017-06-02 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It's no problem.

[She mentions offhandedly. It looks like this is where they part ways, except 2B stops to add...]

Regardless of how the world might be, remember this.

You helped get the lantern back not because you were told to. You decided to do it by yourself.

(no subject)
