memoria

In the days leading up to May 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Memoria. A more solemn celebration than Sampremi or the Flower Festival, Memoria is a week-long time of remembrance for those lost in the Great War and the epidemic that decimated Riverview Quarantine's population 10 years ago. Memoria traditions include lighting lanterns for the dead, telling stories about lost loved ones or lost homes, eating meals with loved ones, and a special gathering to send floating lanterns down the river in honor of those lost.

a solemn commemoration of those lost

While the main city-wide event associated with Memoria is the floating of lanterns down the river on the evening of May 8th, the holiday is generally seen as a time of reflection on and appreciation of things that have been lost - people, homes, cultures, and planets. It is also a celebration of the things that remain. Many locally-owned shops will host displays of culturally-significant food, and will hand out informational flyers sharing the unique customs of their own homeworlds. There is a heavy emphasis on sharing time with family, friends, and lovers, and anyone who is able to will cook meals or treats for loved ones, or at least purchase them something good to eat.

i. hanging lanterns

Throughout the entire week of Memoria, residents will be hanging lanterns around the city. Lanterns are generally placed in greater number in places of passage - streets, bridges, and all alongside the train lines are particularly well-decorated, as are any trees alongside paths, and most homes and businesses have a profusion of lanterns around their doors and windows. This tradition is twofold; some people believe that the lanterns are hung in these places in order to guide the spirits of the dead back to those who still love them, other people believe that the lanterns are to give light for living loved ones to find their doors in times of darkness...many people believe both.

No matter what your character might believe, you can be sure they will find themselves offered a lantern for free from various businesses or friendly citizens passing by, and invited to hang it before the sun sets, or they may be handed a bundle of lanterns and asked to help share them with others.

ii. sharing life

Throughout the city, characters will find groups of people gathering to share hot drinks and talk about their loved ones lost, their homes and planets, or their experiences during the Great War and the epidemic. Anyone who has lost someone, who has fought to survive, who is feeling cut off and homesick, is welcome to sit and share their story. If your character chooses to sit and to share their story, they will find that people will gather to listen, will generally be respectful of the telling, and may share their own similar experiences in return. This is an excellent time to air grief in an environment where most people understand and respect grief, and a good time to deepen the connections to others around you, to understand them better.

There is also a very large focus on cooking or purchasing meals or treats for loved ones during Memoria, with many people taking meals with everyone they care about during the week of the holiday. Some go the extra mile and will hand out baked goods (usually chocolate or cinnamon), packets of candy, or other little treats to acquaintances, especially if they would like to form a closer bond with them. This is a great time for characters to reach out to someone they would like to get to know better with a surprise treat!

iii. floating of the lanterns

On the evening of May 8th, just before sundown, many of the city's residents will head toward the banks of the river, where they will light lanterns in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, in honor of their dead loved ones. The types of lanterns vary wildly, based on personality (either of the person floating it or the person they are honoring), culture, and many other factors. Some lanterns are very simple, others are incredibly complex, but the one common feature they all have is that people write on the shades of them - they write about their feelings for their loved ones, their wishes for their relationships and friendships, a memory from childhood or home, or even just lines of poetry or lyrics from songs that express something they miss, or something that hurts them.

Once those emotions are written on the lanterns, the lanterns are set free, floating down the river in the darkening evening, in a cathartic gesture shared by most residents of the city. Waves of lantern floating will start around 7 pm and continue until the sun rises on the morning of May 9th.

[ It's sudden and strange enough that he does get distracted, faltering in his steps and glancing away nervously. ]

Uh, what? No, I... [ He does not have pretty eyes, so now he just gives Loki a frustrated look ] You haven't even shown me proof that you're a god, you know.

[ Success, yes. Good. ]

You haven't shown me proof your real name is Adam. See? Same diff.

Not really. My name doesn't exactly matter, but claiming you're a god? That's a big deal.

[ Or maybe he's just wanting to see some godly powers. ] You should have magic, right?

[ikols]

Dunno, maybe.

[ This is too much fun, look how annoyed Adam is. Like a bird ruffling its feathers. ]

I'm a dab hand at poker, does that count as magic?

[antietam]

Not unless you're cheating. [ Is this why people don't seem to like Loki? This is probably why.

He scoffs. ] If you can only manage card tricks, no wonder you don't have any stories about yourself.

[ikols]

You look lovely when you talk and I'm sure I could watch the shapes your lips make for hours, but nothing you have to say is attractive at all. It's not even pleasant. I mean, I'm not only a god, you know? I'm also me.

[ He stops and bows, an arm flourishing out to the side before he straightens to head off with purpose. ]

Have a tolerable day, fair Adam of Sour Grapes. I take my leave of you and your demands.

[antietam]

[ He would just let him go since it doesn't seem he'll be getting any answers out of him, but—he was being pretty rude. With a purpose, but he's clearly not getting any flies with vinegar. ]

I—look, I'm sorry. I got caught up in the whole god thing. I'll let you go, but you know, no need for sour grapes.

[ikols]

[ Pausing mid-step to peer at Adam, he shrugs one-shouldered in a casual way that doesn't fit with the weight in his eyes. Adam's are pretty but Loki's are old. ]

Do you make many friends by harassing them for magic tricks?

[antietam]

[ Adam doesn't like that look, so he stares off to the side. ]

Usually I find out about their magic tricks after we're friends. It's not like I've ever met a god before, though, so—I mean, it's hard to believe in what I can't see. I still probably should have offered you some conversation first.

[ He is well-aware that he sucks at People. ]

[ikols]

I suppose I'll forgive you.

[ It sounds haughty unless his expression is taken into account, an amused smirk tugging up the corners of his lips. ]

Anyway, I put myself out there to be questioned when I wove tales of yore, no worries. Let's start over, yes?

[antietam]

[ He does glance over and, well, he probably deserves that smirk. Maybe using people for information isn't a good thing? He'll try. ]

Yeah. Thanks. [ He holds out his hand. ] My name really is Adam. And I did like your stories. Do you have any more? Or am I not allowed to ask more questions?

[ikols]

You can ask but I may not answer.

[ Capricious as he has proven himself to be, he sees fit to remind Adam of it. With a shrug, Loki re-invites him to walk at his side now the apology has been accepted. ]

[antietam]

[ He holds back a sigh but not the roll of his eyes as he returns to walk by him. He no longer seems mildly suspicious (as he gets around all new, strange people), at least.

It's only right that if Adam is going to avoid talking about himself, he should let others do the same. ]

Fair enough. I'm still curious about this city. Things like, where's the best place to hang out? Or would you happen to know where its source of magic comes from? [ Same thing. ]

[ikols]

Nice segue, very smooth. [ Of course, he oh so helpfully answers with, ] Best place to hang out is the border.

[antietam]

I really did want to know. [ Joke's on him!! ] What's so nice about the border? I haven't gone.

[ikols]

It might get attacked by monsters at any minute. What's not thrilling about that?

[antietam]

Oh. Comforting. [ He doesn't seem pleased about that information. ] Monsters aren't exactly my idea of fun. I think I'd rather stay with the mourners.

[ikols]

Best stay deep in the central Quarantine, Bright Eyes, or make nice with the wall's defense teams.

[antietam]

[ There's a quiet huff that probably translates to I can take care of myself. ]

You don't have to keep making fun of my eyes. I get it.

[ikols]

[ Glancing sideways, he laughs under his breath. ]

Can't take a compliment, can you? Alright, never again. Was there anything else you wanted to ask this walking novelty?

[antietam]

I take real compliments. Besides, wasn't I supposed to be treating you like a person? Or do you prefer the novelty angle?

[ He really just has no idea what to do with this guy. He can't get any sort of lead. ]

[ikols]

You mistake my levity for insincerity. And I'm simply saying how I feel, Adam. As a person.

[ Twisting and turning perspective so ambivalence is always there but not quite rooted, enjoying keeping Adam on his toes. ]

[antietam]

Isn't that the point of levity? [ There's a long pause as he works this out in his head. ]

If I were a god, I think I'd like being seen as a novelty. Being associated with humans sounds more like an insult.

[ikols]

Not if you're me ... or Willy Wonka.

[ Gene Wilder era, obvs. ]

Whyever would it be an insult to have an association with humans? They created pizza. That's ingenius.

[antietam]

[ Amazingly, Adam laughs. ] Okay, agreed. The only thing I'll miss about home is the pizza place I used to go to. Hopefully there's some alien version of pizza here?

[ As an afterthought: ] By the way, Willy Wonka was an asshole.
