river festival

In the days leading up to August 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: The River Festival. This holiday is in celebration of the river and the life that it gives to the city, as well as the heat of summer and forming bonds with friends, family, and romantic partners. The celebrations are marked by a community-wide cleanup of the docks and beaches along the river - particularly important considering the recent flooding that's left the banks of the river littered with debris - as well as beachfront cookouts and parties (both private and city sponsored) and beach sports tournaments happening on either open stretches of beach or in special clothing-optional beaches, all capped off with fireworks displays each weekend in August.

a celebration of the river and togetherness

Following the hedonism of Carnivale, it's time for something a little more low-key and relaxing. The River Festival happens every year in August, and is geared toward community building through cleaning up the beaches and docks along the river and then using all that freshly cleaned beach to gather on. During the month of August, there are various lightly-themed government-sponsored beach cookouts and parties geared toward family, romantic dates, or casual all-ages get-togethers for meeting new friends; there are also a few more racy parties at clothing-optional beaches around the city. Many private residents also take this time to gather together friends and family, and have cookouts on the beach with all the typical trappings of the beach barbecue. There are also various casual sports tournaments sponsored by community centers, gyms, and sports teams in the city, featuring prizes ranging from notoriety to sports equipment to big bucks. Every weekend, there are beautiful fireworks displays and free concerts. This year, the River Festival has been chosen for the unveiling of a new water park in the City, with free or heavily discounted tickets during August!

i. cleaning up

The holiday starts off on a note that is just a bit more sombre than the rest of the season, with the cleanup efforts following the recent flooding blending into the usual tradition of cleaning up beaches and docks along the river. The cleanup is a group effort, with every citizen who is physically able pitching in to comb the beaches, where they pick up fallen tree limbs, garbage, and anything else that's accumulated during the winter and spring, and then raking the beaches to make them clean and ready to use. The cleanup of the docks is similar, with residents sweeping and hosing them down where necessary. This year, there are a lot of repairs to be made to beachfront structures that might've been damaged by flooding and the traffic along the riverbanks from the heroes that participated in the rescue of cult hostages, so if anyone has some carpentry or building skills, those would definitely come in handy.

This is meant to be a community building effort, so many businesses in the area, more well-to-do private citizens, and the government have pitched in funding to provide lunches, cold drinks, coffee or tea, and snacks to anyone who's helping out with the cleanup efforts. All in all, the cleanup has a very friendly, welcoming vibe.

ii. beach activities

The main traditions of the River Festival involve cookouts and beach parties. Each weekend in August, the government as well as various corporations and businesses in the city, will be providing funds for large beach gatherings. On these days, there will be booths set up offering wares and freebies from various businesses around the city that have helped fund the party, large swaths of cleared beach where residents can don a swimsuit and catch some rays or swim in the river, massive barbecue setups to provide partygoers with all the standard barbecue fare, beach sports tournaments, dancing and musical performances, and fireworks displays (see prompts below).

The holiday isn't just about these big parties, though - many residents arrange their own barbecues, cookouts, beach camping trips, beach bonfires, and other riverside gatherings and outings. Many riverfront businesses offer discounts on services such as canoe or kayak rentals to go out paddling on the river, jetski or motorboat rentals for tubing, wakeboarding, or waterskiing, or mounts to take romantic rides in the surf. Additionally, there is an adults-only section of the beach where any of these activities can be done in the nude in a clothing-optional setting, including the big city-sponsored parties.

If your character is good at playing a particular sport that could, conceivably, be played on a beach, chances are that during the month of August, a tournament will be set up for them to participate in. The tournaments are pretty standard, generally sponsored by community centers, sports clubs and teams, gyms, and other organizations and businesses in the city, with various levels of specialization, and levels of skill or competitiveness. The prizes also vary, with everything from plain old bragging rights to sports equipment or passes to gyms and community centers, to large lump sums of cash money. Definitely worth it, for characters with a love for sport. Oh, and a lot of these tournaments are happening on the adults-only clothing-optional beaches, for those grown-up sports fans who like a bit of an extra challenge.

iii. fireworks and music

Each weekend throughout the month of August, there will be evening performances all along the beach. Not as extensive as the musical performances during Carnivale, the performances are geared more toward dancing than true concerts, with areas roped off on both on the regular and adults-only clothing-optional beaches for dancing and mingling (acts will switch off between the two areas so both areas get both performances).

Player-characters who are musical artists, DJs, or otherwise perform are free to set up shop around this party and panhandle or put on free performances for publicity.

After the sun goes down, boats will head out into the water carrying a variety of fireworks, and there will be a beautiful display of exploding color in the sky for residents to watch and enjoy. The fireworks are highly advanced, incorporating old-fashioned gunpowder as well as modern technology that result in really beautiful displays that can take the breath away!

iv. waterpark

This year, there's an extra little bit of fun being thrown into the River Festival - the grand opening of a new waterpark! It's quite the park, set near the river with a scenic view, and featuring all sorts of amazing rides, from waterslides that are catered to all ages and levels of thrill seeking, tube rides that are almost like a rollercoaster on water, a pool where customers can faux-surf, funnel rides, side-by-side racing slides, a lazy river, and almost anything else you can imagine. Besides the rides, there are also a wide variety of swimming pools for kids and adults - wave pools, lap pools, splash pools - and an equally wide variety of hot tubs featuring various minerals (and some aromatherapy) for relaxing, invigoration, and other effects.

Some of the hot tubs are in a clothing-optional adult area, where there are some normal pools and some clearly-labelled pools contain elements that increase arousal or desire, or simply affection to encourage some closer bonding!

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to meet new roommates, for the purpose of getting to know each other, or hit up one of the mod-posted prompts for each Communal Floor. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during the River Festival, feel free to write it up!

i. cleaning up

[ Cleaning up by hand is very inefficient, isn't it? Of all the yearly traditions in this place, Cisco just doesn't get the appeal of this one. Who makes a big party out of picking up trash? There is nothing festive about picking up trash. So of course, he's done the most Cisco thing possible and decided to augment the day with a little technological help.

As he roams the beach, he is accompanied by a helper. It's a rather ugly looking thing - a solid metal box, from the outside, with a sliding opening at the top and one side, and flat wheels to help it move along the sand. But its use becomes clear every time Cisco picks up a branch, or fills up a bag of trash, or comes across other detritus. He merely drops it into the top of the bot, waits a few seconds, and then it comes out the side - melted down or compressed, for any recyclable materials; as a block of charcoal, for the wood. The garbage just incinerates without coming out the other end.

Very efficient. Not big enough for everyone to use, but if someone wants to come up and share, two people could feed material into it, trading off as they gather things up strolling down the beach. ]

iii. music

[ Cisco never in a million years would've expected he would be doing this. Music is one of those few things that makes him nervous. He'd always loved it, sure, but... it had always been Dante's thing. Dante was the prodigy. It was Dante's concerts Cisco was dragged to as a kid; Dante's practicing which had filled the house day after day. Cisco hadn't even tried to compete with that, after a while.

But here he is, just outside the area where the evening's concert is going to take place, with his guitar. It's not as bad as it would be, if he were on stage. If there were people sitting in chairs and rows, looking at him, with programs in their hands telling his name. He's just found a nice rock to sit on, and is going to play guitar for the folks who are trickling in, in pairs and small groups, coming to find their spots on the beach before the real concert starts.

He is nervous, but it shows more in how he keeps fussing with his hair and pushing it back, until finally he starts in on a first song. It's nothing complex, nothing very out of the ordinary. Just some fun arrangements of songs that were popular on Earth. Your Ariana Grande's, your Ciara's, your Natalia Kills. ]

iv. waterpark (established cr most likely?)

[ Cisco is ALL ABOUT that lazy river life. Haven't seen him in a while and want to catch up? He is going to be camped out in an inflatable raft, with a pair of sunglasses and a fruity drink, for several hours. It's a perfect chill time for a relaxed heart to heart, though he's probably not going to be starting conversations with any strangers. That's contrary to the lazy river spirit. ]

Dude, that is such a cool robot. Did you make it?

[Yes, that's definitely an overly cheerful woman bounding up to look at the trashbot. Feel free to ignore her tail or the small army of squirrels hanging around her. Or don't, because that's a lot of squurrels in one place for a species that's normally asocial.]

How'd you program to recognize and s9rr the individual pieces of trash?
franciscoramon: (:! whoa whoa whoa bro)

[personal profile] franciscoramon 2018-08-07 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Well that sure is a girl with a tail! And not, like, a teenager-at-an-anime-con clip-on deal. That is a giant-ass, real-looking tail. Honestly, it might have fazed him at one point, but Cisco's been living on this weird moon full of elves and aliens and ghosts and shit for over a year. It takes a lot to surprise him.

But having a whole squad of squirrel companions, like some kind of Disney princess who is about to break out into song? Yeah, that's enough to earn a double-take. ]

I- uh... yep. I made it.

[ He feeds the branch he'd just picked up into the robot, pointing to the closing door on top as he explains: ]

It's- I mean, it's pretty simple actually, I've just got a little sensor in there that measures the density, and then it automatically activates, you know, the proper setting for how to process it.

[ Yeah okay he can't pretend it's normal any longer, he can't do it! He turns, knowing he might be acting rude right now but a man has his limits: ]

I'm sorry, are those real?!

[ And he gestures to her gaggle of fuzzy companions. They... could be robots themselves! Or holograms. Or maybe she's a witch and has transformed her enemies into squirrels and brainwashed them into a very small squirrel army. Honestly you never know in this place. ]

They're real, alright. The Squirrel Scouts have been helping me clean in exchange for walnuts. Most of them anyways. Stevie Nuts over there wants almonds instead.

[She points over to a female red squirrel, who waves back.]
franciscoramon: by hollywoo (:o but wait)

[personal profile] franciscoramon 2018-08-07 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Cool.

[ If she's going to say it like it's a totally normal thing to be happening, then Cisco is going to accept it in the same fashion. At least, he tries to. He just raises his eyebrows, nods a few times, bites his lips and goes back to picking up trash. For a few paces, he walks alongside the girl with the squirrel entourage ('sounds like a very strange parody of girl with the dragon tattoo, doesn't it?' his brain oh-so-helpfully adds). But then because it's driving him, well, nuts, he asks: ]

So are you like part squirrel?

[ Look, he had to ask. She's probably used to that by now, right? And won't sic her 'Squirrel Scouts' on him for being so rude?? ]
partiallysquirrelblood: (Introductions)

[personal profile] partiallysquirrelblood 2018-08-08 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Basically, yeah. Being an animal-human hybrid's a pretty common way of getting superpowers in my universe. A lot of them are part-spider for some reason though.

[It was weird. She liked Spider-Man, but all things considered she really preferred being part squirrel.]

I'm Doreen, by the way. But I also go by the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.
franciscoramon: (:? a handsome boy)

[personal profile] franciscoramon 2018-08-16 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
[ Cisco's still a little dumbfounded, but he doesn't question that she's telling the truth. Why would she lie, anyway? And she's clearly got a great big squirrel tail, so... chalk it up to the multiverse being big and strange. Really strange. ]

Uh huh. Right. Well, I guess that makes sense. Not the lots of spider peeps thing, cuz that's just weird. I meant the rest.

[ Then, because it only seemed polite to, he explained: ]

Where I come from it's pretty much dark-matter-from-a-particle-accelerator-explosion superpowers or no superpowers at all. Never met an animal-human hybrid before.

[ Come to think of it, though... ]

Although actually I did meet a guy callin' himself Spiderman a while back. He only had two arms but maybe he was one of yours?

[ When she introduces herself he gives a little wave, grinning: ]

I dig it. Big name to live up to, but you seem like you could pull it off. I'm Cisco.

[ Should he...? He has been much more open these last few months, about his powers, and really, if there were ever an opportunity to drop the superhero name, this is it. After half a second's pause he adds: ]

Uh, but. I also go by Vibe.
partiallysquirrelblood: (Grin)

[personal profile] partiallysquirrelblood 2018-08-17 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
A friend from home mentioned him earlier. He's definitely not from our universe, but there's a version of him that is.

[Doreen grins as he mentions his codename. If there's anything she loves as much as squirrels and making friends, it's super-cool team-ups.]

Do you have vibration powers, or is it more of a clairvoyance-slash-precognition thing?

iv. waterpark

[personal profile] whosthemonsternow 2018-08-07 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[South figures enjoying some down time after the fuckton of cleaning would be a great idea. A better idea is, of course, harassing poor Cisco once she sees him relaxing on his little raft, trying to just enjoy some calmness. She's in sunglasses, bikini, flipflops, and has her own fruity drink. She leaves it all on the shore and slowly slips out to him, waiting until she's close enough to jump and belly flop on him. Hello buddy, how is it going?]
bythehand: (what the fuck is this thing)

[personal profile] bythehand 2018-08-08 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
[ Finn isn't exactly all about the lazy river life, strictly speaking, but it's turning out to be more his speed than most of what the waterpark has to offer. Easy to get in and out of? Check. Feet easily touch the bottom if someone decides this relatively chill zone looks great for horsing around? Check.

He's not exactly predisposed to lounging. Sitting very still is one of his specialties, though, and when it comes to lazy river-ing, sitting still and lounging are basically exactly the same thing. That's what he chooses to believe.

It's not bad.

Like almost everything in life, better with company. ]

Pretty nice glasses. [ Who said compliments are dead. He knows how to test the conversational waters. ] Been out here long?
franciscoramon: (:) hair up)

[personal profile] franciscoramon 2018-08-16 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Finnnnn!

[ Cisco draws the name out, sounding genuinely delighted to see Finn floating up near him. Without asking for permission, he reaches over, just grabbing the edge of Finn's tube and hauling it a little closer in the water, so they can float side-by-side. ]

Buddy, it's been forever.

[ Between this and that, Cisco had not had as much time recently to keep as well in touch with his friends as he would have liked, and he's not going to pass up this opportunity to make up for lost time. Settling his drink on his stomach, he sighs. ]

Naw, just got here. How've you been? Tell me, like, literally everything about your life these days. Anything exciting?
bythehand: (casual shittalk)

[personal profile] bythehand 2018-08-17 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He doesn't have any beef with getting wrangled into some tandem floating. It makes it a little easier to have an actual conversation. Or at least it's better than drifting apart until they're half yelling at each other from opposite sides for however long they're here.

Cisco is truly a genius. ]

I don't know about exciting. The Perimeter Guard gets plenty of excitement. [ If it's not regular monster duty it's mass abductions by cultists. ] I bought a fish? It's a little funny-looking, but I think it works. Oh-- Poe put cookie dough in our egg roller a while back. Almost started a fire. That was exciting. You know, in an annoying way.
