what: housewarming party
when: mid-august
where: jyn & cassian's home
warnings:
--

It's not a very inviting text but since technically Jyn did invite the recipients to come to a location at a predetermined time, that counts as an invitation and Cassian cannot complain. The location is a small cottage home, space masonry covered in the same creeping leafy ivy as the rest of the moon, an overgrown garden on the side of the house being (what looks like violently) cut back to make room for the fresh plots of tiny herbs, each carefully labeled. There's a welcome mat and the door is open with the sounds of music drifting out of the screen door.
(Side note: none of that was there if early recon happened on the [LOCATION], so jot that down. This happened nearly overnight.)
Once inside, it's... shit, is it a party? Is it a party in Jyn and Cassian's new home that they got without telling anyone, moving in the cloak of night so that they could steal literally all of the furniture in their apartment that wasn't nailed down? Well, the shrimp dispenser is there in the kitchen and Jyn's wall of herbs are still there so that must be the case.
That's 100% what happened.
The kitchen is full of food, made by Cassian, and alcohol, and there is a small ginger cat prowling around and a small grey pile of fluff that occasionally makes a noise so it must be alive, the music is low enough to hold a conversation, and of course there is shrimp. Never ending bottomless shrimp. This is the extent of the party but be grateful that a year after Jyn and Cassian arrived in the Quarantine, they're inviting their, like, five friends to their home. Some people have never even seen the apartment, but that time has passed. Pour one out.
In addition to the food, there is one single cake, homemade, because turns out this party doubles as a joint birthday party. You know, for the birthdays neither of them told anyone about.
Yay! Party!

[ FULL OFFENSE. Okay he's not telling the whole truth there--one of his favorite feelings in the universe is the way gravity loses its hold on a ship, the way the world rolls from a planet's sky into blackness.
He's trying to find a way to describe the feeling, what it means. The struggle is p clear on his face. ]
First time I flew I was... maybe three years old. I don't know if it's the time I remember, or if I remember a bunch of little pieces from a bunch of different flights, but. My mom had me in her lap, and I remember being pressed up against her while we took off, that sense of the world trying to keep us in its grip, and then we were in the air and we could see everything. Everything. We broke through the atmosphere and I got to see the stars, yeah, but I got to see Yavin 4 too. The whole thing, all the way to the curve of the moon.
I'm pretty sure I fell in love with home when I saw it like that. Yavin 4, Hosnian Prime, D'Qar. When I fell in love with those places, I fell in love with them from the sky.

but she couldn't see the caves on lah'mu that held skittering purple crabs with iridescent bellies or that the path in the valley was the only part of the planet untouched by the seemingly ever present mists or that the ocean is so full of minerals that you could float without effort.
she reaches over to flip the pages of the journal, stopping on a page that has a sketched picture of a tiny rodent looking animal with tiny paws and a long, silken tale wound around itself. the page labels it as a 'ajidamoo'. ]
Have you seen one of these? They're all over the capital world. They nest in tree roots and raise their babies in raised nests with bats, co-parenting with an entirely different species. But you can't see that from here, or even from the sky over the capital world.

No, you can't. [ Poe shakes his head. ] But have you ever seen a valley or a waterfall or a canyon and just... had to take a second, had to drink it in? That's what it's like for me when I'm in the sky.
[ He lets his hand fall away from the little book. ] But it's more than that, too. It's the feeling of gravity losing its grip, or of turning with the wind and feeling the pressure vanish. It's the freedom of knowing you can go anywhere, anywhere, see anything.
So maybe it is a little bit about throwing yourself into space. Maybe it's a about that, too. When I'm in a cockpit I'm home. Doesn't mean I can't love the time I'm on the ground, too. When I'm planetside. I ended up flanked by whisper birds once, on Yavin. Flying on either side of the ship, above it. It was beautiful. Never gonna forget that. I dunno, I just never thought of it as having to be one or the other.

the one time it was just a joyful jaunt into the atmosphere she had this same argument with hadder "if i can't fly i will literally die and no, jyn, that is not an exaggeration, i will expire" ponta. he had the same, bright idealism as poe, the same cheerful, adventurous spirit and wide eyed hope that he could change the world.
oh for hutt's sake, that is who poe reminds her of. she puffs out a breath, sweeping her hair back from her forehead when her too long bangs tumble free of her bun. ]
Maybe it doesn't. I hope it doesn't for you. [ she can't smooch poe to win this argument via distraction, so she's just going to have to give in like a god damn chump. ]

He can't find anything to argue against in that statement. That doesn't seem right.
Hang on. ]
Did I just win?
[ A slow grin. Because like any little-big brother he's got to be a pill about it. ]

[ that is different! he didn't win, she retired; she retains all the credit. she debates, briefly, tripping him because it's harder to gloat from the floor but decides on another tactic instead.
she can always trip him later.
conversationally: ] So I heard Cassian told you we're fucking.
[ that was not at all what he said. ]
no subject
He said something, yeah. [ Hang on, he can get back on solid ground here, he can do it. ] Congratulations, to both of you.
[ Pause. ]
I mean, not on the--on the relationship part.

And for the record, that couch you were sittin' on earlier? Many repeat performances.
[ she winks, smile turning almost taunting because at least she has the upper hand in this respect. nothing is safe in this house, poe dameron! ]
