[Steve doesn't mind the music. It's reminiscent of music he grew up listening to. His mother had loved to dance, at home or elsewhere, and would often play the music as she did random house chores, making up her own steps as she went along.

As Kirk makes for the sound system and shuts it off, Steve steps properly into the room.]

You are. There were a couple of turns that could use some work, but that's an area that's hard to improve when you've only got an invisible partner you're trying to not bump into. [He speaks from experience.] You'll get the hang of it.

And don't apologize on my account. This facility has a large floor, an ideal practice space. If I can just grab a few things I'll find another space to work-out in and leave you to it.

[He begins walking towards one of the shelves towards the back of room that holds training and weight lifting equipment.]

Yeah, I think I will. Practice makes perfect, as they say.

[ It's easier during the classes, when he has someone else to correct his steps as needed, and to serve as a partner so he can practice. Alone, it's not the same thing.

He waves a hand and shakes his head as Steve moves towards the training equipment. ]

Are you kidding? No way. I have the shuttle bay, that's plenty of room if I wanna keep practicing. [ A pause— ] Or you could be my partner, if you want. Do you dance?

[He pauses in front of the equipment, hand outstretched to grab one of the weights. When Kirk's question registers though, he lets his hand fall away as he glances at the other man in surprise.]

I do. [He half smiles.] But I haven't had a chance to practice in awhile. If you don't mind a little rustiness I'd be happy to be your partner.

Not at all.

[ His smile stretches wider, and he straightens his back into a proper stance. All playfully of course, as he stretches a hand out towards Steve, palm turned upwards. ] May I have this dance, then?

[He can't help but grin as he approaches, stopping only when he's an arm's length away from the other man. Adopting the same stance, he places one hand into Kirk's outstretched one and the other on his shoulder.]

You may.

[He's danced in the 'woman's' position before so he's not unfamiliar with being lead, which will help.]

[ Jim steps closer to Steve, hand resting on his lower back, easily adopting the leading stance. Not because he has a preference either way, although admittedly it's the one he's been practicing the most.

With the music still playing, he taps his fingers against Steve's hand, a way to mark the rhythm before he takes the first step. Nothing too quick or complex, but he does seem to be fairly at ease with the steps by now. ]

[It's been a couple of months since he last danced, but he falls back into the steps easily enough, allowing Kirk and the music to guide him. Dancing is one of those things that once you learn you never really forget.

He notices the ease with which the other man moves as well. His practice is clearly paying off.]

I don't mean to pry but can I ask what you're practicing for?

[winscenario]

[ There's a lot of practice involved, true. But Jim's also always been good at learning new things. Comes easy to him— in an annoying sort of way to other people, particularly when he was younger and liked to brag and gloat about it. ]

I'm surprising my boyfriend. [ He lifts a shoulder just barely. ] He likes the waltz.

[neversurrender]

[He smiles slowly.]

He has good taste. The waltz is a great dance.

Is there a special occasion coming up?

[winscenario]

Not really, I just wanted to set up a nice surprise for him. [ He quirks an eyebrow, even as they keep dancing to the music. ]

You're not the first to ask. Does there have to be a special reason for me to want to surprise him?

[neversurrender]

Not at all. It just seems like an easy assumption to make. If an incorrect one in this case.

For what it's worth I think it's sweet.

[winscenario]

Yeah, I guess you're right. [ He shrugs. ] I'm odd like that. Just felt like surprising him, so that's what I'm doing. Maybe when a special occasion does come around I'll have a tough time thinking of something special, but— Victor wouldn't mind. He's not the sort to care about that kind of thing.
