Carnivale is a ton of fun, but sometimes you just need a breather from the big parties —

Something easy! Like watching godawful movies and munching on popcorn.

Peter had originally planned for a much smaller movie night, but once the school and its excitable staff and slew of teenagers caught wind that Peter got a room for bad movie night, they were very susceptible to expanding on it; it's not even Peter's sole anxiety-inducing mini-project anymore, and for that he's kind of grateful, to be honest. People from school and the staff can help set it up without him wringing his hands and worrying that maybe he's flattering himself, trying to do something that requires guests and friends and people who actually listen to the monsoon of words that come out of his face when he's nervous.

The Riverview Highschool has put aside some of their typical school rooms, and in each there's a decent television with a movie player — nothing too fancy, but perfect for bad movies, right? The desks have been pushed around a bit and a collection of blankets and pillows fill the middle section, free to be used. Judging from the patterns on some, they were either made by the teenagers at the school or offered up by sweet old grandmas who love to crochet. Some rooms also have the beginnings of fortes being made by some of the older kids who totally did a little manual labor in exchange for sweets and chips.

Movies like Sharknado, Plan 9 From Outer Space, and old cheesy monster movies like 1954's Them! (where's Ant-Man when you need him) are playing from room to room, but anyone's free to play whatever awful movie they've scrounged up — free reign, as long as it's nothing too gross; don't be weirdos and play grindhouse movies to scar everyone in the room who just wanted to enjoy the popcorn.

There is one added benefit, as well! Pam the overly complicated pancake-making robot (in a questionable apron) is going room to room with warm pancakes and condiments, offering whoever asks a stack — and without screwing them up, either!  You probably can't thank Peter completely for that, he had to get a little help from people like Shuri. Of course, if you tell Pam your name when she asks, she doesn't remotely get the name right. Sorry, man, it's just a... flaw of the system, and not her being intentionally programmed to say the most endearingly incorrect and embarrassing name she can give you.

[Peter, by the way, is absolutely late to his own get-together he was trying to set up. It wasn't on purpose! In fact, he'd been here for most of the set-up, but then his acute hearing picked up trouble outside and he had to go help out, and then after that he ended up needing to go settle a dispute, and then after that a frantic lady said her dog got out, etc, etc.

It just kind of snowballed.

But he's here now!

Um. Breathing heavily and missing a shoe and trying not to be too conspicuous.

... He might even be nodding off a whole thirty minutes into the first movie, his soda dangerously leaning in his hands. God save this mess. Just, uh. Pinch him. Or something.]

Jyushimatsu will hold back just because Pete's a kid, but he'll go straight for his cheek, happily pulling. If he used his normal strength, there would have been a risk that he'd rip half of poor Pete's face off because the kid is not gag anime enough. He then talks while his mouth is full of popcorn. ]

Wake up! Wakey wakey! The movie just started and you're already conking out? Is it that boring?

[Ichimatsu's just going to claim his soda and set it at his feet, and then nudge him with a bare foot, instead. Of course, when Peter wakes up, he'll be seeing double, in a sense? What is having two of six identical brothers at the same bad movie night you're throwing, if not extremely confusing.]

Jyushimatsu Matsuno | OTA

[ Jyushimatsu never thought he would return to school as a grown ass adult, but such is life, so full of surprises. Or it's just because he's in the company of other grown ass adults and some kids who have gathered together for a bad movie night.

Claiming a stack of fluffy pillows and holding a grand total of four bowls full of chips, popcorn and candies in his arms, he's in the midst of watching the start of Sharknado with trepidation. That's exactly his favourite brand: stuff that doesn't make any fucking sense, some blood splattering around, sharks flying and eating people, random explosions. You know, movies he'd be definitely a protagonist of if he pursued a career as an actor.

He'll be mostly entranced by the movie, but he won't ignore the commentary going on around him and he's open to bond with anyone over the shitty movie. You can also snatch some of the food, too, he won't mind unless you try to grab a whole bowl. He will also happily accept pancakes and whatever Pam-chan serves him, and he's not even bothered by the bot calling him Fourteen Pines for some inexplicable reason; he supposes it's a pet name she's giving him.

At some points he'll even yell and laugh like a madman. Feel free to scold him or scream along. ]

[You had better believe he's helping you eat your snacks, Jyushimatsu. He's actually somehow wedged himself partway between two of the pillows in his brother's stack, wound in what can't possibly be a comfortable pretzel-like fold that he's been settled into for the entire movie, now. He's raptly watching, regardless, sometimes even forgetting to claim himself a new palmful of snack, or pressing popcorn kernels into his cheek because he forgot to turn his head enough to get them in his mouth.]

What. The fuck. Is this movie.

[ Now this seemed like an entertaining way to start to learn more about and integrate himself into the Quarantine. He knew of human's penchant for enjoying objectively 'bad' media as a form of entertainment, so perhaps he would find he enjoys it himself.

And he supposes he does. Plan 9 From Outer Space was... dreadful. He quickly caught on when another actor was 'replacing' Bela Lugosi after his sudden death. But it wasn't unpleasant. The crowd laughing made it fun; Connor finds he understands this. A camaraderie made by experiencing something truly terrible, like a microcosm of getting through a stressful event together. Just fun.

How quaint.

Once that's done, he finds himself in the path of this 'Pam.' A robot? He supposes she's like a great-great aunt, to think of it in human terms. Less 'sophisticated' but still.

He's trying to speak with her, although he's quickly discovering it's... interesting. He doesn't get the impression she's treated poorly though. If someone approaches, they'll catch Connor saying gently: ]

My name is Connor, ma'am. Not Archibald.

You know what she calls me? Fourteen Pines! Fourteen Pines, you hear?

[ Said pine boy pops out from behind Connor, not at all trying to make him jump or anything! ]

Can you believe that? Pam-chan is so cute!

[Peter laughs a little on the approach, putting his hands in his pockets. As tired as he is from over-doing it on the patrolling, he has to admit, it's really nice to force himself to stay awake on caffeine and see how people are fairing. Especially with regards to his odd robot. She doesn't bump into walls anymore thanks to Shuri's sensor help, though! Just... the voice thing.

And it's funny now.]

But Archibald's a pretty nice name, too! I'm, uh. Not sure where she pulled that one from...

Usually it kinda sounds like your name; she calls me Sweety Parker instead of Peter Parker.

[Alex just happens to be passing at that moment, carrying her cup of coffee and wearing a broad smile. It's amusing to see Pam up and about and not possibly destroying the entire kitchen. So she pauses when she hears someone who she hasn't met patiently attempting to correct the robot, and she gives him a quick smile.

Alex is definitely one of the kinds of people who would sit with a scared roomba in her lap during a thunderstorm, so she's glad that someone's not yelling at the robot.

But still, she just says quickly:]

I have to wonder if Peter programmed her like that. It's sort of endearing, don't you think?

She keeps c-calling me Samuel... [ Why he doesn't know?! But at least it has the same letter he guesses. ]

I wonder why she keeps calling people all different names?

[ Well either way Shigeru seems to be enjoying himself, even if he's not exactly better from his recent step back with his phobia. He's a bit pale even now and he hasn't even been around other people all that much. ]

( the makeshift kitchen space is a good place to get a snack. it's also a good place to lean up against a desk and watch as countless people try their damnedest to get robot pam to stop butchering their given names. like not-archibald over here, the almost too perfect looking dude with an almost too calm tone.

as pam whirs around again, repeating of course, archibald and yes, archibald with each plaintive repetition, skye observes the man with a wry grin. )

I don't know. You do kind of have that Upper East Side jawline going on for you.

( oh no... did she just confess to watching gossip girl... )

Teddy Altman | ota

[How can anyone pass up stuff like Sharknado or Plan 9 From Outer Space? Seriously. It'd be a crime to not stop by and watch a few terrible movies, even if he wasn't on friendly terms with the guy who thought up the event. Besides, bad movie night is certainly the only reason Teddy can think of that anyone would actually want to go back to high school for.

Gathering up some popcorn and candy, Teddy's found himself a corner and grabbed a few pillows and a couple blankets to make himself comfortable.

Teddy's mostly a good person to watch movies with -- he's quiet, he's polite, and he doesn't mind sharing his snacks at all.

But you can bet there might be some occasional commentary here and there, or Teddy tossing out some terrible quotes along with the movies. He won't ignore anyone else's commentary or if someone tries to start up a chat.

He'll also be valiantly attempting to teach Pam how to say Teddy or Theodore, something, but she keeps coming back with everything except. He gives up on Berry. It's-- vaguely close, right? Ish. Kinda.

Teddy's also brought a couple movies of his own to add to the party -- Manos: The Hand of Fate and Troll 2, specifically. A bad movie night would never be complete without some of the absolute worst.]

[ He glances curiously at the movies Teddy brought along, both sleeves covering his mouth. ]

Manos? That's a weird name to give a movie! [ At least Trolls seems to be specific about what it's about. ]

Alex Reagan| OTA!

[There was no way that Alex was going to miss a bad movie night, even though Peter had already brought her some when she was laid up. Nope, she was going to go and she was going to enjoy it because well, it sounded like just the sort of thing that she needed. Dressed in comfy clothing for what would no doubt involve a fair amount of being on the floor, Alex carried a few large boxes of cookies in one hand, and an overly large cup of coffee in the other. Look, it never hurt to be prepared or whatever, and at least now there was a sweet option to go with all of the popcorn.

Settling into the room that's playing one of the old and thus terrible monster movies, Alex settles onto a pillow, and puts the coffee in front of her, waiting for the break between movies to end. While she's waiting, she breaks open the string on the cookie box and offers it to someone near her.]

( good minds think alike, apparently. where alex has come prepared with sweet snacks and a large to-go cup of coffee, skye's brought a straight up growler of piping hot mocha to be shared with the party at large. caffeine for kids, an excellent choice. not that she can't top up her friend first, of course. she's not a total heathen. )

Obviously. ( cookies are important. enough that skye actually bothers to finish her own before continuing her thought, settling down next to alex on a pile of collected pillows. ) These are good, too. Thanks for not cheaping out on the store brand for this important occasion.

( the occasion being movie marathons, of course. )

[ Seeking refuge away from a very insistent Pam, Robbie stumbles around the halls until he makes his way into yet another classroom. It's intermission time in this one and he inches closer to the screen, wiping his brow as he plops onto the floor with a sigh of relief.

He hadn't actually noticed that there was someone nearby when he'd settled down, but she's offering him a cookie.]

As long as it's not a pancake, I'll take it.

[He reaches into the box, grabbing one the freshly baked cookies and taking a bite into it. A smile, genuine, appears on his face.]

Thanks for the cookie. Have you been waiting awhile for the next movie?

Aeacinos Ixocia | OTA!

[ Well if anyone wants to get cozy with a giant 35 foot long half man half snake they are more than welcomed to do so.

Aeacinos is quite comfortable just lounging in his snake form, although he's curled up so as to leave space for everyone else, as he watches these movies. They're all rather awful and he can't understand why so many people are here watching, himself included, but he'll just chill and curl up on himself as he snorts with amusement. ]

This shark tornado would not stand a chance against myself or my warriors. Tornado or not. But it seems like a decent foe to go up against. [ He flexes his claws as he watches, clearly he's enjoying himself more than he should, if the tip of his tail wagging back and forth was any indication. ]

What other movies have you humans made? I would like to watch more, ones with monsters perhaps. [ Please save him. He's gonna watch all sorts of crappy kaiju movies once he goes back home. ]

There's a lot of movies with monsters where I come from!

[ Here's a muppet in a yellow hoodie who quickly went past the "HOLY SHIT THAT'S A SNAKE DUDE???" phase and is now comfortably watching Sharknado with him. He gulps down a whole handful of chips before he adds: ]

Godzilla is the most popular! Most of the movies are about him fighting other monsters! There's also King Kong, but he only appears in a couple movies. He does fight Godzilla in one of them though!

[Ivar's leaning up quite contentedly against his giant snake friend. There's an interesting sensation of being pressed up against scales and muscles. He's been fascinated by the movie on the screen.]

I agree. We catch such creatures for food back home. One flying through the air would provide a challenge for a time.

[He's gnawing on some caramel popcorn and offers the bowl up to Aeacinos.]

I recommend The Creature From The Black Lagoon. It's about a monster that's half fish, half man.

[Ivar loves old Hollywood classics. He's watched a lot of movies since ending up here a year and a half ago.]

[Robbie, surprisingly enough, enjoys monster movies. There's something that's a bit of a relief when it comes to watching the likes of Godzilla (yes even the terrible 2014 version) terrorizing mankind. Perhaps it's the fact that he's dealt with real monsters that he enjoys the escape that the fake ones provide. Bad movie night sounded like just the kind of thing for someone who wasn't too big on parties.

Anyone looking to join him in a marathon of the Godzilla franchise is welcome to join him on the floor of one of the classrooms where he's made himself at home with a few pillows and a large bowl of popcorn.

Don't mind him while he stuffs his face full. It's been awhile since he's a: interacted with people in a setting that wasn't life or death, or b: had down time.

Still, if asked, he'll be happy to comment on his favorite parts, or argue about the merits of one film over another.

Before long, however, the popcorn bowl is empty, but he's still got room in his tank, which brings him face to face with 'Pam' as he heads off to grab more snacks. Robbie's history with robots is less than stellar, so her cheerful demeanor isn't exactly appreciated... especially after the third short stack of pancakes is oh so lovingly shoved into his hands.]

Hey. Look. I was good with the first set, but really I'm pretty full.

[Pam continues to whir away, making more pancakes than Robbie can eat. Help in encouraging the robot to find someone else to feed would be quite appreciated.]

I said you could stop already. [She hands him yet another plate of perfectly fluffy pancakes — chocolate chip — and patently ignores his request.]

Ugh, do you come with an off switch?

( did she stalk him here? no. definitely not. but she did send him an encouraging text message saying that it'd probably help his street cred to actually attend social gatherings instead of holing up like a recluse in his room... so, you know. obviously she's going to say hi. or laugh at his misery, either or. )

Don't listen to him, Pam. You're doing amazing. Ronaldo's just a shy boy, he's really hungry.

[Sam's setup at movie night is fairly normal - a large blanket on the floor, a couple piles of pillows, bowls of snacks and a plate of pancakes, courtesy of Pam. What's a little less normal is that at the front of the blanket, atop a small ottoman of their very own, are four or five mice watching the movie with rapt interest, their whiskers occasionally twitching. They have motley clothing made from brightly-colored scraps of cloth, and featuring feathers, snakeskin, or small animal bones - and occasionally, one of them will whisper (or try to whisper) to the others in a high-pitched mouse voice.]

Should we incorporate the Barstool into the Holy Writ of Sharknados?

Guys, people are trying to watch the movie.

[Okay, so it's kind of hard to top Sharknado, but talking... mice? They definitely do it. Teddy looks over his shoulder, watching quietly for a moment, brows furrowed curiously.]

... Did-- can those mice talk?

[Honestly, he's probably seen stranger things, but still.]

[It's a muppet invasion. Okay, so you've only got two of the four that are in Riverview, but that's still a startling amount of twins to have at a bad movie night, probably. At least you got two that are reasonably easy to tell apart?]

[He spent Sharknado with Jyushimatsu, highly reactionary to the entire film like it wasn't a weird shitty movie about sharks in tornadoes, and afterwards seems a little dazed, like he's trying to make sense of the entire thing. Ichimatsu this is exactly what you're not meant to do with B-movies, don't try to analyze them you will just give yourself a headache.]

[Ivar asks all too cheerfully after the movie has ended. He's sitting comfortably nearby with some popcorn salted with all sorts of spices. He really enjoyed that movie, mainly because doing something like slicing through a flying shark with a chainsaw appeals to Viking sensibilities. He can't wait for the next movie to start.]

[ In all honesty, she can't quite see the sense behind advertising a bad movie night but she's there anyway if only because it's a good opportunity to get out, see how everyone is doing and keep an eye on Tony's new student of a sort. She's in one of the old dresses she found in her apartment ( luckily unclaimed and untouched, she probably has sam to thank for that ) and a pair of heels. Only, she's still sporting an injury; it may be unseen, but she walks slowly and often times she has to lean on the sofa and take a breath before taking her seat. ]

-- He wasn't joking when he said bad.

[ she says as she watches Them with a skeptic expression. She might also roll her eyes at the robot and mutter technology at its worst.

Sometime towards the end of the movie, she twists in her seat for her plate and mutters a soft curse at a small ripping sound..

[Peter's no stranger to getting hurt him! But you know, he doesn't go falling into rebars, Peggy. Sheesh. He's late to the party after having mysteriously vanished, like, just before it started — and now he's down one shoe an hour later when he comes in thanks to misplacing it in an alleyway; he's kicking off the surviving shoe to the pile people have created so he can come see how everyone's doing. He's practically beaming when he notices Miss Carter's there, because he really wanted her to see Them, like, super bad.

He plops down on the couch (he's honestly not even sure where this came from) with one or two new bruises on his arms and a huge-ass tub of popcorn.]

C'mon, Pam's not that bad! I did my best.

[There is a military fighting a giant fake ant on the screen. So cool.

Someone tell her about Ant-Man.]

Athena Parker | OTA

[ This is awesome. Way, way better than the party lounges, that's for damn sure. The only high she has to worry about here is one that comes from too much snack food and staying up way too late.

She pops from room to room for a little while, meeting people, making friends with some of the students, sampling the snacks. Athena ends up in the room where Sharktopus is playing, making herself at home in a pillow and blanket fort and stuffing popcorn in her face while she watches.

After a while, though, she's back on her bullshit, following Pam down the hall and tormenting the poor machine. ]

No, it's Larry.

Anyway, Chase is enjoying the opportunity to hang out with his Fellow Kids, even though he's like, in this weird position where these people should be his peers, but he's not actually in high school anymore, because he's getting his moon GED instead. So...

[ If you ask Gamora, she won't tell you that she likes "bad movies." In fact, she'll probably say that she doesn't understand wasting time on movies that are decidedly awful, but she's here, because she's come to enjoy watching movies, period.

Also, Terran movies are just odd on their own, so movies that others think are bad might be plain old entertainment for her.

(But that would also require admitting to having fun, and that's like pulling teeth with Gamora.)

She can be found in a classroom, sitting outside of a blanket fort as The Reptile plays on a screen. It's... weird, and not necessarily in a good way, but she also thinks the creature looks strikingly like a species she once saw traveling the galaxy.

Not only does she have popcorn on offer, but there's at least four plates of pancakes on the floor with her, and she has absolutely no idea what to do with them.

Groot, however, is standing next to one of the plates that's stacked high with chocolate pancakes, and he's greedily stuffing them into his mouth as quickly as possible.

Frowning, she reaches out to put a hand over the little twig's armful of food. ]

Slow down, before you make yourself sick.

[Peter stops behind them where he walks, frozen in the midst of cramming more gummy bears into his face. Oh thank god, she's talking to Groot — he has been spared any stern orders this night. He swallows hard and plops down next to the little tree guy now, taking the Moral High Ground.]

Yeah, Groot, you don't wanna enjoy it just to lose it all on the floor.

[Look at me, being a responsible older person to a youngster.

Pay no mind to the unkempt hair and new bruises on his arm.

He just had to help... someone move... earlier... yes. They'll heal in an hour or two.]
