carnivale

In the days leading up to July 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Carnivale. This holiday is in celebration of music, and the onset of summer and warmer weather. The celebrations are marked by street parties, an extensive program of live musical performances, with two large parades on July 8th and July 9th.

celebrating music, and summer

After a couple of months of low-key or even solemn celebrations, it's time for Riverview Quarantine to throw a good, old-fashioned party. Carnivale is a city-wide festival that pretty much everyone gets into, and many residents take the entire week off so they can enjoy all the festivities. With events ranging from impromptu street parties, free live musical performances, food stands, themed club nights, adult lounges with kink shows, and topped off with two massive party parades, the holiday has a lot to offer for anyone who likes to sing, dance, and show some skin!

i. street parties and food

One of the staples of the Carnivale festival is the spontaneous street parties and food trucks and carts. It's not unusual during the holiday to turn a corner and run into a group of people dressed in bright colors and sequins having an impromptu party with a few drinks, and then be invited to join right in! Carnivale is a celebration of music as well as summer, so most shops and stalls will be blasting danceable music into the streets to facilitate these little street parties - it's considered a sign of good luck for the owner of a business if an impromptu Carnivale celebration starts up in front of their door.

Considering the proliferation of street parties and people out and about to celebrate the warmer weather, local business owners also take to the streets. Food carts, stands, and trucks pop up on almost every street corner offering a wide variety of food from savory treats to sweet desserts. Many of the carts are offering one free item to anyone dressed up for Carnivale - anything shimmery, shiny, or brightly colored will do!

ii. live musical performances

One of the major roads in the city center has been completely roped off for the entire week, and all along this street, various temporary stages have been set up, each with a nice hefty sound system. Volunteers hand out printed flyers, and digital boards are set up here and there with schedules of various performances that are all free to attend, ranging from well-known popular music artists to new up-and-comers or independent artists who are looking to make a name for themselves. This event is very widely advertised around the city, and is accepting entries until the very last minute.

So jump in and stomp around in a mosh pit or just dance around in the streets, let yourself get lost in the music and the summer heat!

Any player-characters who are musically inclined are more than welcome to assume their character was fit in for a performance, and can post up a top-level with a rundown of their performance to get bonus Activity Points for posting a mingle!

iii. carnivale parade and children's parade

The other main attraction of Carnivale week comes on the weekend of July 8th and 9th, which are paid holiday days for everyone in the city. There are two parades, the Carnivale Parade on July 8th, and the Children's Parade on July 9th.

Both parades will start out by City Hall and wind through downtown in a lazy pattern so everyone in the city has a chance to see them. There will be all sorts of floats, dancers, marching bands, with all sorts of clubs, businesses, and other organizations represented. Observers can expect great music, excellent dancing and marching shows, neat vehicles provided by classic car clubs, the fire, police, and Perimeter Guard. They can also expect a lot of party favors, whether it's a sparkly plastic beaded necklace, a fan to take the edge off the heat, candy, popsicles, a temporary tattoo, or any number of other little treats or toys to be tossed into the crowd.

The Carnivale Parade on Saturday has a more adult tone to it, and party favors thrown may be toys or gag gifts of a more adult nature suitable for older teens and grown-ups. The floats are more risqué and the people in the parade show more skin, dance more provocatively, and there are wet T-shirts, occasional flashing, and other things that might not be suitable for children. The theme is theatrical, big and showy, bright and colorful, sparkly and shiny, with loud music and lots of glitz and glamour.

Geared toward children and younger teens, the Children's Parade is on Sunday and generally more low-key, with more of a cartoony than glitzy theme. The Children's Parade will have more conservative floats, with bright colors, juggling and dancing, and mascot costumes. Party favors will lean more toward candy and temporary tattoos, rainbow pinwheels, and small toys. Keep an eye out for floats with pop performers and for popular cartoons in the city!

And make sure you wear your waterproof mascara - Carnivale and Children's Parade floats have a tendency of spraying or spritzing water, both in an unspoken competition to see who can make the biggest water-refraction rainbow in the air, and to keep observers cool in the new summer heat.

iv. adult: lounges

Thanks to the Carnivale tradition of showing as much skin as possible, some event organizers' minds have turned to topics of a more adult nature. In the evenings, residents may see clubs doing "lounge nights"; these adults-only events have bouncers IDing everyone at the door to ensure they're 18+. The themes may vary, from very specific niche themes like 'golden age superheroes' to broad themes like 'rainbows,' and each event is clearly marked as what it is - all-nude or clothing-optional, and can host events ranging from amateur to professional exotic dancing, food served off of nude bodies, anonymous masked hookups, or just provide a comfortable space where casual sex is encouraged with whoever happens to be around. Various legal substances can be found at these lounges, but nothing that would cause violation of consent, and every substance would be clearly labeled and have warnings to ensure that no one partakes unless they choose to. Please be sure to warn in the subject line for sexual content or drug use (since some mild party drugs are legal in Riverview).

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during Carnivale, feel free to write it up!

II. LIVE PERFORMANCE

[Old habits die hard, even in a new verse. After barely a day to settle in, Stephen had gone straight to work, choosing to focus on what he could do to help this world while he bid his time as he waits to be sent back to his own universe. There's a small comfort in the thought that his absence will not impact the fate of the multiverse for the time being. And so he's gone back to the familiar routine of work, eat and sleep. The work he's been given is interesting: the mixing of his medical and magical knowledge is enough to prick his curiosity and leaving to work long days.

But it's also the same curious side of him that pulls him away from the same route he takes every morning and night from the communal residence to the Gramarye Magic Research building. The beats of the performances echo through the streets and soon enough, he's found his way to the main stage, a detour he takes every night for the duration of the Carnival.

He listens to the performances at the edge of the crowd, often time the corner of his lips curling slightly upward when he hears a song he knows and likes, mentally calling out the name and date of the album the song comes from. Stephen can't help but think of Billy and the rest of the surgery crew, but already, memories of that time feel like a lifetime away.

The music shows still are a nice distraction, and for those observing him long enough, they might notice how the bottom of his cloak curl on itself slightly before moving in sync with the rhythm of the music, as well as clapping its corners together at the end of any lively song played.]

IV. ADULT LOUNGE

[They say that the world is your oyster, and Stephen figures that if the displaced are in such a festive mood, he might as well join in on it, who knows, it might be contagious!

It's not, but Stephen does show up at a few lounge event, favoring the clothed ones to the alternative. He rarely dress within the theme of the night, but Strange at least takes the time to transmute his blue robes into something more appropriate and casual, using the Cloak as a jacket, the red lining the only thing betraying the real nature of his garment, the Eye of Agamotto hidden beneath his shirt.

He declines any drugs offered to him, sticking to bourbon only, and even then, he drains his glass slowly. He means not to lose any sense of control he might have, and clearly needs help in loosening up slightly. A mighty challenge to anyone interested in taking it head on...]

[ Sometime during a round of applause for the performer as they finish a song, Stephen will find that someone familiar is waving to him as she approaches. ]

Hi Stephen! Hello Cloak! Where is Sirius?

[ She looks around then, searching for the dog that usually follows Stephen (well, the Stephen she's met here who isn't from her world) around - and when her eyes settle on him again, she's close enough now that she gasps in recognition. ]

You are not Stephen! [ Wait no ] You are Stephen, the other Stephen. [ Wait no that's still not right ] The other Stephen is the other Stephen? You are- you are the wizard, the one from my world? [ The confusion is deep on her face as she figures out who is who, twisting her hands together anxiously. She decides then to ask, ] Do you remember me?
nomadeupname: (That's not convincing)

[personal profile] nomadeupname 2018-07-10 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
[It's impossible not to recognize the female alien, even from afar: it's not like Stephen has seen a lot of her kind before anyway. He waves back at her as does the Cloak, gathering a bit of cloth together to form a 'hand', but Stephen raises an eyebrow at the mention of something named after a star:]

Who's Sirius?

[But the question answers itself as Mantis struggles for a moment to place him within the different verses of himself she seems to have met here. He blinks, the confusion not only easy to pick from her face but also from the way she wriggles her hands together, and he nods once:]

I am the one from your world. And the preferred term is 'Master of the Mystic Arts'. [Not that it might do a difference here.] And yes, I do remember you. [A beat.] Mantis.

[He presses his lips together in a thin line, before he asks a question of his own:]

How much of Titan do you remember?
glowfeelers: (24)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-07-10 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh? Wizards are masters of mystical arts?

[ How interesting! Though, she supposes, "mystic arts" is probably a fancy way of saying magic, right? Do wizards like to be fancy? Either way, the worry on her face seems to lift when he tells her he is indeed from her universe, and that he does indeed remember her. ]

Oh! So many here have not remembered me, or known me at all, or remember the same things I do! [ And if he's asking her about Titan, that should mean that he does know what she does, right? (She fails, however, to consider that he might know more than she does...) ]

We were awaiting Thanos' arrival. You were going to throw me at him, when there was a chance.

[personal profile] nomadeupname 2018-09-04 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's the term we use, yes. [Although, all things considered, Stephen really might have to choose his battles and let this one go. In between her, Thor, Stark and Thanos, the use of 'wizard' might just catch on quicker than he'd like it to.

He nods once:]

Yes, so I've seen myself. It seems that we do not all come from the same timeline, at least for those that comes from our multiverse.

[He does know what she can do, and how their fight ends, but there is no point letting her know that they seemingly lost, when all is going according to plan, to what the Eye has showed him. Letting her believe that they failed isn't a burden he wants to leave on anyone. Instead, Stephen simply shrugs:]

Then we are from about the same time. We had engaged Thanos right before I was brought here.

[It's a half truth, but it'll leave it at that.]

How long have you been here, Mantis?

[There's an obnoxiously rowdy guy who goes in and out of the crowds during one of these otherwise lovely concerts — obviously a bit of a drinker, and obviously there just to be annoying. At some point, though, he'd gotten himself riled up with a couple of other concert-goers and decided to be a pain in the ass. Spider-Man's hanging out in the rafters and kicking a foot, enjoying the nice sounds, but his senses ping just as a beer bottle goes soaring through the air at the unaware singer—

Thwip! His web fires off, catches the bottle mid-travel, and he swings it up and into his open palm. What rude dude. The jerk in question looks around in confusion for the magick'd bottle. Why, look at that, Strange — it's the Spiderling, holding half full beer bottle upside down in his hand as he descends on a web to deposit it in a garbage bin (can't have it spilling all over!). He's practically right next to Strange and doesn't seem to realize who he is — or maybe he hasn't had the pleasure of rescuing him from aliens yet.

Spider-Man addresses the rude-ass patron:]

C'mon, dude, just enjoy the music! Why're you such a killjoy?

[And the drunk and disorderly dude nearby kind of just slinks off with a glare, temporarily defeated.

But hey, no injuries to any singers!]

[It's the tattletale sound of a web being sling that causes Strange to look up, even before the sticky line catches the flying beer bottle. And as expected, the spiderling is there, keeping the peace at the concert. Stephen watches as Peter slides down a web, something he's seen the kid do before, and he raises an eyebrow at what seems like a too gentle retort to be yelled at a drunk man:]

Do you really think he'll listen to you, kid?

[He asks, his gaze never leaving the troublemaker, not entirely convinced Parker's warning will be heed for long. Stephen puts the fact that Peter hasn't seen him yet on the mask he wears (how he can see anything in that is a real mystery), but surely his voice will be recognized, yes?]

Hey, hey, you never know. People can turn their attitudes around with a little politeness.

[He turns to the voice, having not focused too much on the rest of the crowd in his efforts. But if someone wants to make some small talk, he's not against a little casual chatter—]

It's usually a low percentage, but I like to give everyone fair chances.

[Oh, wait, it's Mr. Strand! In Mr. Dr. Strange's outfit?

What in tarnation; he seems puzzled for a moment.]

[ jessica jones isn't the type to fall in love. she's learned from extensive experience that caring about others only leads to despair, from the tragic accident that stole her family away to the countless people she's failed to protect. however, there was something about stephen strange — his obstinate nature and refusal to give up on jessica, that ultimately resonated with her.

they weren't a perfect couple. hell, she could never even bring herself to use that label, but goddammit, they tried. she tried, for once, and look how fate rewarded her in the end. stephen returned home, abandoning her. sure, it was through no fault of his own, but it still hurt like hell.

that's why she's here — in some crapass lounge with a glass of hard liquor as her only companion. she wants to drown her sorrows away, mainly through cheap booze. it's a toxic outlet; then again, jess has always been known for her questionable life choices.

she catches a glimpse of him from her peripheral vision. at first, she wonders if this is some kind of cruel dream, or perhaps a hallucination. her head turns sharply, while her fist tightens around her bourbon. on instinct, she shatters it with her strength, and small pieces of glass pierce her flesh. the sound should suffice to catch his attention — the noise disrupts the silence in the air, even if the pain has yet to register. ]

Shit.

[ she mumbles to herself, still incredulous. she can't move or even think. ]

Stephen?

[Tonight is the first night Stephen has turned around from the nicer lounges: the theme is a 'no clothes' night, and while he's not ashamed of his body, that sort of party feels entirely too intimate to his tastes. But he's out already, and so he ducks inside the first lounge that will let him keep his clothes on. It's smaller than the other ones, quieter too, and most likely the place where the less savory residents of the Quarantine come, but nothing that can really deter him. Who knows, this place might churn out an interesting night.

He's on his way to the other end of the bar counter when he hears glass break before someone cursing, and he looks at the injured woman as she utters his name.]

That's my name, don't wear it out.

[Still, despite the dry tone, he makes his way to her, leaning over the counter to grab a few clean napkins, not trusting the rags there to be safe enough to be used to clean her cuts. Stephen assumes she's called him out to help her with the cuts: she either knows his other, older counter part, or she knew him from before. Or maybe from his future, but part of Strange still worries that might never come. Either way, he takes it as a call for help because of his medical knowledge and nothing else, clearly missing the incredulous looks she's giving him.

Sitting on a stool beside her, Stephen reaches for her hand: if she lets him, he gently plucks out the glass pieces stuck in her palm, his moves precise despite the tremors of his hands. It's been two years now since his accident, and while they still shake, his hands have grown stronger and steadier. He'll never operate again, but at least he can perform simple first aid. Once her hand is free of shards, he gives the cut a quick assessing look and presses the napkin into her palm before closing her hand into a fist.]

It doesn't look too deep, you won't be needing any stitches,

[he says a he orders her another round with his: Stephen knows all too well how hand injuries are painful, no doubt she'll need some liquid courage for once the pain hits.]
hardedged: (stay alive)

it's great!

[personal profile] hardedged 2018-07-10 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ she's still too shocked, unable to process what's occurring in front of her eyes. although she would normally withdraw her hand or offer a wry retort by now, jess chooses neither option. a part of her realizes that there's something amiss, but all she can focus on is that he's here. he's returned to her.

pressing her lips together, jess waits in silence as he mends her palm. she's lost in thought, her mind racing with confusion. when she does finally speak, as he covers her hand with his own, jess swallows hard and scoffs. ]

You're back. You asshole.

[ she's a romantic at heart, clearly. despite the insult, it's said with affection. well, as much affection as someone like her can offer in such an emotional state. ]

Back again?

[When Stephen's glass of bourbon is empty, Sam brings a new one over with a friendly smile.]

Or is this one of those cases where you don't remember having been here before? In which case, I guess I oughta welcome you to the Quarantine. You gonna need the whole introduction to the multiverse?

[If so, he might need to go get another drink.]

[They might have never met before, but Stephen is familiar enough with the Avengers to know who the young man hailing him is. Beside, the fallout of the Sokovian accords coincided with his accident, leaving him to watch countless hours of newscasts rehashing the whole event. Still, the offered drink is welcomed, and he smiles tightly as he picks the glass from Sam's hand:]

I'm afraid it's one of those case of selected amnesia. [He nods curtly at Sam before sipping from the glass. Though this time around, his smile is a bit more convinced:]

I know about the multiverse. I've been through a few dimensions of it, but this is the first I'm stuck in one. Or well, the second time, I suppose.

[Probably not exactly how this place works, but he' already met with people that he remembers that swear they've never met before, and there's even another him. It is worth another drink, but Stephen is going to nurse this one all the same.]

How long have you been stuck here?

It was a year in February. 'Cept Stark and I got caught up with what's been going on back home last month - they have these weird capsules that they deliver sometimes, and if you open it, then you suddenly get memories crammed into your head. Physical changes, too.

[Sam hesitates for a moment, and then-]

Tony said you were with him on Titan?

[Not the only one out and about. Stephen was on his way back from the grocery store, bags in one hand, along with the leash of the black lab trotting at his side, decked out in a red and gold collar and a service vest. He crossed the street and rounded the corner before he slowed at the edge of the crowd watching the performance, attention was caught by the movement of the other's cloak. He'd gotten good at spotting those subtle twitches of fabric when learning the moods of his own cloak, which was currently playing scarf under his jacket.]

It's decent entertainment.

[Stephen answers with an equally wry smile, before turning fully to the other master of the mystic arts. Even if he is getting his mind around the fact that another him is in this world as well, it still feels weird, given how alike they look. There are some subtleties, yes, but it's still jarring.

His own cloak perks up at the little wave and waves back. It's not so hard to imagine the trouble those two could cause it they wanted to.

Strange nods toward the black lab, an eyebrow arching upward:]

[Well, that is a familiar looking profile back, and for a moment, Alex just smiles. It's a rather huge smile, and she's so happy that she's just going to overlook the strange clothing. After all, with something like this, it's probably Simon's fault. Or her fault in some roundabout way. It wasn't a suit, but it wasn't like he was wearing something that weird. This was a bar, so maybe that was the reason he was wearing something different.

Not that Alex actually minded. It was a good look.

So, without thinking too much about it, and too pleased at the idea he's here, Alex just moved behind him and wrapped her arms around his back, holding onto him tightly before she just quickly whispers into his ear, in her ready for radio voice with it's slight twinge of a canadian accent:

[Stephen has never been a fan of affectionate gestures, only initiating some as a lover, and always shying from it whenever it was coming from strangers. It isn't in his genes, it seems, to be warm, though perhaps one day it's a flaw he would work on.

But tonight is not the night, and when he feels arms wrapping around his mid-section, he stiffens instinctively. The voice that whispers in his ear is unknown, but when the young woman it belongs to calls him by another name, he frowns lightly. His hands covers her as he gently pries them off him.]

I'm afraid you are hugging the wrong person, Miss. [He says as he turns around to face her. He's fairly certain he couldn't have been that much of an asshole on his first round in the Quarantine to lead a woman with a false name, unless he's hit his head somewhere along the way. The smile he offers her isn't exactly apologetic; it's more dry and amused than anything else.]

My name is Stephen, not Richard.
11calls: Why are they shipping me and Strand?! Lol. JK. (The interns said what)

[personal profile] 11calls 2018-07-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Alex wouldn't be surprised by anyone who wore Richard Strand's face not to be very big on the whole hugging thing. Especially with someone who he didn't know. The only person who got away with it just happened to be Alex, and now here she was hugging someone who definitely wasn't her partner, no matter how much he looked like him. His voice, however was entirely different and Alex quickly pulled her arms tightly to her chest, wrapping them around herself.

As someone who was pale, when Alex went scarlet, she went scarlet and her face was the absolute epitome of 'oh shit' for a moment. There were downsides of being so expressive, and this was definitely one of them. For a moment, Alex's mouth just opened and closed, because finding words was difficult in her embarrassment. If he knew her, he'd know just how big that was.

In the end she just shook her head quickly, and tried a quick half smile before she spoke softly:
]

Oh my god. I'm so sorry. It's just that you look pretty much exactly like my partner. Well, other than the goatee thing.

[A beat and she added:]

I'm so sorry, I'm definitely not the sort of person who goes around molesting people. Also hi I'm Alex and did I mention I'm sorry?

[Her voice went up a bit at that last question, and then she tucked some hair behind her ear, trying to will away the redness and the wrong-footing that she'd started out on.]

[ Listen, Peter Quill and music go together like peanut butter and jelly. Like salt and pepper. Like macaroni and cheese. So of course he's going to come out here and enjoy the shows. He similarly sits on the outskirts, in deference to his recent and still-healing injuries, perching on a walkway railing.

The weird thing about Riverview is that this place has a lot of the music and films and TV shows that he remembers from his childhood in Missouri. More than once he's picked up an old cassette tape of a band from his childhood and gleefully slapped down credits to spirit the thing home. What that means is that the performers around here had a surprising habit of doing covers of old songs from Earth.

So when some band actually comes out and plays Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird"? Peter totally barks out a laugh (followed by a wince; thanks, broken rib).

And when it comes to an end, he lets out a shrill whistle by way of applause, two fingers hooked into his mouth— though it comes to an abrupt stop when he sees the dude standing nearby.

[It's nice to hear music from Earth, even if he hasn't been long enough in this world to actually miss Earth. Strange hasn't really noticed Quill, even if they're both at the edge of the crowd, otherwise he would have at least acknowledge the other man. Still, there's a wry smile when he turns to Peter, mistakenly assuming the Guardian's friendly demure for recognition:]

Depends on what cocktail you're taking, Quill.

[Stephen knows both from his medical knowledge and his personal experience that certain painkillers can really shift perceptions. Meanwhile, the Cloak waves at Peter enthusiastically, probably not helping his buzzed feeling.]

Peter blinks at the other guy for a second, expression slipping into something slightly wary.

He's run into a handful of folks around here who knew who he was, and as flattering as that's been, he's more used to being recognized as a precursor to getting punched.

It's why Peter straightens a little where he sits, perched on the railing with a foot hooked around a baluster to keep his balance. His gaze flicks briefly to the cape thing that is absolutely waving at him right now, and that's so weird, but first things first: ]

[It's a break from work and a break from learning more about this place. To date, Padmé hasn't found a way to depart from this place. It may well be that the only route for departure is as they are told, but Padmé has always been one to make up her own mind and seek out her own truths.

Yet that doesn't mean that she's going to plow through it without a thought for anything else. Like it or not, she does appear to be stuck here for the time being and driving herself insane is not beneficial. It is why she has stopped by the music, finding it strange, yet lovely, at least in some situations. This whole place is unexplored territory, so to speak, and little by little she is learning more about the foods and the culture.

She has been there for some time, listening, shifting now and then to change her spot to watch. It's later that she does come across a sight that does make her pause and do a double take as the cloak seems to be... Well, maybe not alive, but moving on its own accord? She doesn't know if it is technology or some foreign technology, but as the cloak seems to get in to a particular song, it does earn a soft laugh from Padmé.]

[Even if it doesn't have ears like humanoids do, the Cloak does catch on the young woman's laugh and figures out that it is the cause of it. Intrigued, and ever-so easy to please when one has a pretty face like the brunette standing a few pace behind Stephen, the Cloak moves closer to her, not without tugging on the doctor's shoulders before thinking of unclipping itself from it's position.

It flies up to the young woman, floating there before folding itself in two, in what looks like a bow. It gathers a bit of cloth together at one of it's lower corners and holding it up, like an offered hand. If the young woman chooses to take it, the Cloak will lean over, its collar pressing a bit of its collar's fabric together to create 'lips' before lightly touching the back of her hand with it.

When it finally floats completely unfolded again, the sound of someone clearing their throat can be heard and the Cloak turns around to see its master giving it a pointed look, his arms crossed over his chest and eyebrow raised in slight disapprobation.]

Would you stop bothering you ladies? You're old enough to her great grand-father, I'm sure.

[Why yes, the Cloak gathers its two corners over its collar, mimicking what can easily pass for a shocked expression.]

[She watches with a curious expression. Padmé might have thought that the Force was somehow involved, but she has since learned of such things as magic. Or, for all she knows, the cloak is a being that is sentient on its own accord, a race that simply doesn't exist in her galaxy.

Her smile grows, offering her hand to the cloak, as it gives the impression that it is providing one in return. Smooth, is what she thinks, uncertain still if it is alive or aware, as the cloth is pressed against her hand. It's not until that noise arises that Padmé finds her attention diverted away from the cloak, to a man who bears a less than impressed expression on his face.

Yet, she cannot help the small peel of laughter at the interaction between the two.]

If - he? [It? She doesn't want to offend.] Is that old, he's in quite good shape.

[That light twinkle in her eye.]

Padmé Amidala. A pleasure to meet you and....?

[Does the cloak even have a name?]
