Closed to Alec
Jace met Alec at the elevator, unable to wait for him in the kitchen. Partly because he's still worried about him and partly because he's happy to see him. He knows Magnus is more than capable of taking care of Alec, even healing him, but it's hard to step back and simply watch. So when he touches Alec, gently holding onto his arm, he's not thinking about what he's doing.
"I'm not planning to start a business or anything, just thought I'd help out. You have to be honest. Tell me what you think about the combinations of flavors."

Or maybe it wasn't something new for this Jace. There were subtle differences between the Jace he'd grown up with and the one from Magnus' world. Maybe there Jace was enthusiastic about whatever projects caught his interest instead of hiding his emotions.
"When did you start taking cake orders?" he teased. He was still limping slightly when he wasn't careful of how he walked. Magnus' magic and runes had healed most of the damage, but the knee was taking longer to go back to normal than it had the first time Alec had injured it. He probably should have told Magnus it still hurt, but he the injury would heal with time. He didn't need crutches, or he'd been telling himself that.
He did accept the support Jace offered, leaning on his parabatai more than he normally would. "Maybe you should start a business. You seem to be enjoying all this." Looking over at Jace, he was surprised by how true the comment was. "I promise I'll be honest."

He'd even started convincing himself that it was for the best for all of them that Alec and Magnus had moved.
The feeling of having Alec by his side, being close to him again, felt right and good, a release of a tension in his chest he hadn't notice was there before.
"No. I'm not the business managing sort. I just mix drinks and I'm baking one wedding cake. One."
Maybe two if he could figure out what kind of cake Alec and Magnus would want for their wedding.
"If I'd known your knee wasn't completely healed I would have brought the food to you."
no subject
"You should get someone to be your partner for the business side of things. Or bake for one of the local shops." It wasn't something he would have imagined for Jace before, but if he was truly happy in the kitchen, then why shouldn't he find ways to do what he loved? If Alec could have LUX, why shouldn't Jace have his baking? "One is going to turn into a dozen."
Laughing at himself, he forced more weight onto his bad leg. "It was worse than this when I snuck out to ask Magnus on a date." Despite his words, the injury did have him worried. Magnus had healed it, but it seemed to be taking longer than it should to recover completely. Probably because of the starvation and sleep deprivation. Runes and magic could only do so much. He doubted that he had the reserves for his runes to work and he couldn't keep asking Magnus to pour more energy into him. "I've had to fight through worse, Jace." He softened the words with a smile. "I'll be fine."

Jace was always so careful to say exactly what he meant to say, not let his thoughts spill out the way Simon seemed to be prone to doing. Shadowhunters learned to control emotions, control themselves, but a lot seemed to have changed since his world got turned upside. First Clary. Then Valentine. Simon. Magnus. Everything stopped being simple, clear.
Thankfully, being Alec's parabatai could easily excuse the slip. They were partners. Brothers. Funny how calling Alec his brother had the same affect as calling Clary his sister. It was a word used to define a relationship that was safer for them both.
"I don't think I know a dozen couples who are planning a wedding." He teased, letting himself relax into the hold he had on Alec. He missed him and this was the only way he could cling to him without giving anything away.
"One of these days you're going to have to share all the things I don't know about you." Alec was Alec. This world, his own world, or another. "I can feel you trying to put weight on your bad knee. Stop that. I'll throw you over my shoulder if I have to."
Despite the threat and the concern he was smiled at Alec, feeling deeply affectionate.

"I'm sure there's dozens of couples here who would want the best cake in Quarantine." It wasn't an exaggeration. Jace had a talent even if most people didn't notice it.
Grimacing at his parabatai when he was caught trying to force his knee to cooperate, he sighed and kept his weight braced on Jace. "I'm too tall for you to carry over your shoulder. Your Alec doesn't have a bad knee?" From what he'd learned from Magnus, the two versions of Alec were significantly different in the details of their daily lives but he had assumed that they had been injured in similar ways over the years.
Startled by the smile - why hadn't he noticed that the smile was different between his Jace and this one? - he blurted out the first thing that came to mind. "It doesn't seem to want to heal. It was slow the first time I messed it up too."

He had considered it. Doing something more Mundane with his time and energy. But the sad truth was he had been born and raised a fighter. It was in his blood. Jace wasn't sure he could be anything else. Family and business life seemed to fit Alec and Magnus very well.
"My Alec...the last time I saw my Alec he was risking his soul and life to find me. He didn't have a bad knee. Just a selfish parabatai." Jace didn't remember a first time. He'd been so distracted by Clary he'd missed a lot of things that had happened to Alec. But he would have known if Alec had injured his knee. "You're my Alec, too."
He meant that with all the sincerity and warmth of someone who loved deeply. It didn't matter to him they had come from different versions of their worlds.
"Maybe you need a more powerful iratze."
no subject
Another detail he still needed to finalize... once he found someone he could trust.
"You're my Jace too and I doubt you were a selfish parabatai." It didn't matter that his was in another reality. The two of them had bonded as if they shared runes with each other instead of variations that were in other worlds. He cared for Jace as if he were the one he'd grown up with. "We were attacked by a Greater Demon. It slashed me open and poisoned me. I almost died that night. I don't really remember how I injured my knee in the fight but it took about a week to heal even with runes and magic."
Sighing at how his knee kept struggling to keep his weight, he knew Jace was right. "I probably do. We can test and see if your iratze are like my parabatai's" Which would prove that they really were bonded the way they thought.

It made him oddly happy to know Alec wasn't planning to leave the guard despite having the club to focus on. He enjoyed helping him with the club and anything Alec needed or wanted. But the guard was something like a piece of who he was deep down and he wasn't ready to let that go. Even if baking did make him happy and having a Mundane life was slightly more appealing here than it was back home. He was a weapon first and for far longer than he'd been anything else, including a friend and brother.
He wasn't sure what he'd do if he had to do it alone. Maybe after some time, when his heart wasn't so hell bent on holding on so tightly to Alec...no, even then. Nothing was the same without Alec by his side.
"I put a complete stranger first, ignored my training, my own judgement, and put him at risk. Being selfish is what Jace Wayland-Morgenstern-Whatever my name is does. I'm just grateful I got a second chance to not be selfish and to make things right between us."
Jace braced himself to take more of Alec's weight, holding him against his side tightly and keeping the pace slow as they made their way towards the kitchen.
"Do you have your stele?"
no subject
Making a thoughtful sound, he gestured toward the first available surface that he could sit on. Alec might appreciate the help but he knew that he couldn't keep using Jace as an improvised crutch. "So it's not so different than what happened in my world." Since one arm wasn't draped around his parabatai's shoulder's, he used his free hand to swat Jace's chest. "You weren't being selfish, you were in love." Which for Jace was all consuming. Alec had hit a similar level of love for Magnus, but there'd been lines he couldn't cross. Thankfully he'd never had to test his morals as much as Jace had during the wars.
"He settled on Lightwood-Herondale. I think he would have given up Herondale if it hadn't meant giving up the legacy." The fortune and everything that went with it would have been difficult to let go... and Jace probably felt that it was his duty to try to continue on one of the oldest Shadowhunter lines. "It's in my boot."
no subject
The moment Alec was settled, Jace moved to kneel in front of him and his injured knee, leg between his knees. He found Alec's stele without even looking, smiling softly up at Alec.
"Herondale's are like royalty for Shadowhunters. Why would I give that up?" He smiled even brighter, teasing and twirling Alec's stele between his fingers. "Lift your shirt. Unless you want to drop your pants so I can draw it as close to your knee as possible."
no subject
If he hadn't been so focused on his own wishes and insecurities then maybe it wouldn't have happened.
Getting comfortable in the chair, he rolled his eyes at how quickly Jace began fussing over his leg. "Jace wasn't this attentive the first time I tore it up."
"You'd give it up because you're a Lightwood. They wanted you to ignore your past." At least that was how Alec had understood it when his parabatai tried to explain the situation. "I am not moving my leg more than I have to until you've drawn the iratze." Pulling off his shirt, he turned his arm so he could see the scar from the Fearless rune. "I should have realized something was off when you didn't have one."
no subject
He touched Alec's leg, careful as his hand ghosted over his knee. He couldn't imagine Alec being selfish. Alec was the one who put everyone before himself. Even when they were kids. It was Alec who had been there for him first, before anyone else. And he'd stayed by his side.
"If he had been maybe you wouldn't have gotten hurt in the first place." He imagined Jace being too distracted by Clary and it just made him angry at himself. His Alec had been hurt and even risked death for him. "They wanted him to pretend he had never been raised by a traitor, but why would they want him to forget being a Lightwood?"
It hadn't actually been his intention to get Alec to strip, but the moment Alec removed his shirt he remembered why Alec and Magnus had needed their own space.
"Didn't have what?" Just draw the ratze, Jace. Which he would have gladly done if he hadn't suddenly noticed how different Alec's runes were from what he remembered.
no subject
"I jumped in front of him to protect him from a greater demon." Pausing he tapped the scar that ran along his torso. "And got this and the bad knee." Which should have healed more than it has. Maybe the suppression collar did something to his healing abilities that Alec hadn't quite recovered from.
There could have been more reasons than Alec considered, but the most important one was probably the simplest. "Because he's the last Herondale. No one wants the royal family to die out."
Twisting to show Jace his arm, he touched the rune that had almost caused him to leap out of the closet. "This one. It's Fearless. Clary created it. So far, Jace and I are the only ones to ever use it."
