[ there are probably better and healthier means of bonding with a child than taking them out for ice cream once a week, but this is something that lois already knows works and she's still at a loss on how to feel about jonathan kent. he's her son, but he isn't her son, not really. she isn't ready for children and doesn't know if she'll ever be. just because some version of her in another universe had a child at some point in her life doesn't mean that lois ever will, she knows that.

it doesn't really matter, though. she's the adult here and jon's so quick to call her mom, he obviously misses his mother and admires his father endlessly and lois isn't going to fail him just because she never counted on having children. besides, spending time with him is not exactly a hardship. he's cute, generally easy-going, he hasn't thrown any tantrums or anything — the other her probably did a pretty good job raising him. or he just got all that from clark.

so she invites him out for ice cream again and they walk through the park with it. lois has managed to escape the fireflies so far, though she's heard about them. it isn't really the time of day she expects them to be out, though, and so she isn't paying attention — until she feels one bite her in the arm. ]

Damn. [ she probably shouldn't swear around a minor, should she? ]

[ lois thinks clark is out exploring, and she's not quite willing to just go back to the housing that she still refuses to call a home. so she texts someone she hadn't been sure she'd contact again instead, someone she's pretty sure will listen and get a kick out of it without making a fuss about it later.

she might have been skeptical about his magic, but she'd like to think that she got a good read on who he is as a person despite that and he'd seemed, well, nice. she really needs more people to drink with, to spend time with outside of work.

that's an odd thought; work has always been everything to lois.

once at the bar, it isn't difficult at all to spot taako. ] Thanks for meeting me. [ she says with a grin that's a lot softer than any expression she's worn during their previous meeting. ]

[ at some point, lois leaves taako alone at their table for a while to freshen up in the restrooms and to get more drinks. leaning against the bar, she meets the gaze of a woman with dark hair in beautiful rolls, immaculate lipstick, a glass of some dark amber liquid in front of her. ]

Scotch? [ lois asks, and ] Can you recommend it?

[ between spending time with jon and meeting taako for drinks, lois can be found on a park bench with a soppy grin on her face, ready to tell just about anyone about how great a partner clark kent is.

alternatively, come chat with her in the bar while taako's on a bathroom break or getting more drinks. ]

Well, I did have this lil thing with the grim reaper, but we left shit kinda open. [He shrugs, easy, but not really planning to go into what he's got going on here.] You, on the other hand, have got it bad, huh?

Is that some kind of metaphor or are you talking about the actual grim reaper?

[ lois is pretty sure that she can't exclude either option, so asking it is.

I'm pretty sure I can see little hearts floating around your head.

[Oh wait he has magic.

Taako casts prestidigition to make little love hearts float around Lois, while he answers her other question:]

Lit-er-al grim reaper, works for the goddess of death, has a sweet scythe and could probably fuck me up.

[Maybe that's his type a little bit.

[ he says that, and suddenly there are actual hearts floating around her head. lois narrows her eyes at him, even if mostly in jest. ] Those weren't there a second before, don't pretend that wasn't magic or whatever.

[ apparently, the existence of magic is something she accepts now. look at that. ]

Could, but won't? Or could and will?

[With a little wiggle of his fingers, the hearts turn to lipstick marks as Taako blows a kiss at Lois, because he's a jerk.]

Tried to once before we sorted it out. There was the whole thing where we died, super weird, but it's chill now.

[He's going to get back to teasing her for all those sappy feelings for Clark, but he'll explain the whole Kravtiz deal first.]

[ he thinks he's funny, isn't he? the worst thing is that he kind of is, in the same way that clark's terrible dad jokes and puns are funny. they're not, but lois can't help but be amused regardless. ]

You lost me there.

[ he died? ]

[He knows he's funny thank you very much.]

Haaave you seen Groundhog Day?

[Someone has been watching a lot of movies since he got to Riverview.]

So, kinda like that, except it was just for an hour and we got super dead every time.

[He shrugs and grins, like it's not a big deal that he died multiple times.]

How did you get out of it?

[ it is a big deal, but if he doesn't make a fuss about it, lois won't. not when there's a mystery of sorts to solve still. ]

It was caused by a real powerful magic item being wielded by a little kid who couldn't control it super well. Once we got it off June, all we had to do was pop the time bubble surrounding the town. Annnnnd make sure the giant purple worm under the town didn't kill everyone.

[He leaves out the part with Istus, knowing that explaining a goddess is going to take a few more drinks.]

Your life sounds like something they'd write comic books about in my world.

[ comic books that lois probably wouldn't read, but she doesn't say that right now and there's nothing in her tone to imply it, just quiet disbelieving awe (though she does believe him). ]

Oh gods no, we kill way too many people for that.

[Clark has shown him comic books, and morality always seems to be a sticking point, killing people is a line that most heroes don't cross.

Also stealing shit, Taako steals a lot of shit.]

[ maybe that means he's not the hero, and despite her mellow and affectionate state, lois' eyes narrow. ]

Why?

Cause I like not being dead? I mean... [he seems to consider it for a moment longer, before adding:] Yeah that basically covers it, not being dead is pretty great.

[They are occasionally a little trigger happy, metaphorically, but mostly it's just a case of kill or be killed.]

[ lois thinks about it for a moment, studying him, then she nods. ] That's a fair reason. What's your world like?

[ if it's kill or be killed. ]

Sure as shit isn't advanced as this place, but it's... I dunno. Clark showed me some fantasy films and there's a lotta stuff that's similar but there's also some that's way different.

[He wonders how much of that can be attributed to the Millers stealing ideas from various planes of existence, but that's a whole other can of worms he doesn't want to explain.]

Like, uh, robots? Got those. Elevators, got those. But we don't have guns, most folks fight with swords or axes or magic. [He pauses, thinking, then shrugs.] I grew up on a farm, spent most of my life with traveling caravans, just kinda doing whatever I could to get by cause there's no fucking social services or whatever. But now I live on a fake moon? So...

[So it's a wild ride, and hard to explain.]

Well, at least your life doesn't sound boring.

[ that's lois' verdict, passed after a long pause in which her main thought ran along the lines of "what the actual fuck?" ]

Isn't that shit kinda relative? I mean, the last year has been buckwild, but before that it was pretty much just how life was.

[He spent five years on the run from The Law(tm), but that was still just mostly boring.]

It does depend on how much as to be going on for you not to get bored, yes.

[ for lois, well. there's always something going on, some new truth to uncover. it isn't anything as wild as his last year, at least. not generally. not before aliens and this place. ]

Oh, do not get me wrong, if I could avoid all the fucking drama and world ending horseshit I totally would. All I ever wanted was to not be starving and for my show to work out, I'm a dude of simple needs.

[So... he likes some excitement km his life, but the regular kind of excitement, not the life threatening kind.

This is kind of a lie though, he does enjoy adventuring with Magnus and Merle.]

[ honestly, lois is not sure she believes him entirely. about the world ending "horseshit" she does, but he doesn't seem the type of person who'd do well just sitting at a desk from 9 to 5. ]

I used to have a cooking show, it's a super boring story.

[It's not, really, but for once in his life Taako is kind of bored of talking about himself.

Mostly because Lois seems like the sort of person who wants to dig into shit, and he'd rather avoid that when it comes to how Sizzle It Up ended.]

[ lois lifts a hand, waving it around vaguely. ]

[He says this as though that's the worst possible decision that she could've made.]
