Eddie's got the right idea. She does good things, because she knows she's not good, that she can't ever truly make up for the things she's done with her life, under the influence of evil masquerading as national pride. She's put so much darkness into the universe. She'd always hoped that, if she was incredibly lucky, she'd be able to balance the scales before she died, to be the cause of more good than bad. Not that it would have erased the bad.
