[She wasn't one to visit the coffee shops. They were often too busy for her liking, but right now, Elizabeth needed the crowd; the whole of this plague was setting her at unease and she needed signs of life-if only to have the outward signs of normalcy.
She did order tea instead of coffee, adding a good amount of milk, before she spotted Alex at her table. She was only about to ask for an invitation to sit down-when it was gladly offered.] Thank you. I do not mind sitting by myself, but someone to talk with is always welcomed.
[Well, someone she knew atleast, to do so otherwise would just be awkward.]
[Alex definitely looks better than she did the last time that Elizabeth saw her, the dark circles below her eyes are gone for the most part, and she's got more life in her than she even did during the dance. Clearly, life is agreeing with her at the moment. The grin that she gives her friend is bright and she nods.]
Of course, Elizabeth. If you ever want someone to visit coffee shops with, I'm your gal. I'm practically here all the time anyway!
[Close inspection, she had noticed, recalling what Mr. Strand told her about her sleep: clearly there was some truth in what he told her.] Clearly, you have made your home here, indeed.
[She carefully moved some of the books aside, catching their titles.] You are looking much better now. So am I to believe that you are finally getting more sleep?
[Cheerful as she kept her expression, she also couldn't help but voice some concern; she was indeed worried about the state of her health prior to this meeting.]
Yeah, they have much better coffee here than they do at my office, honestly. No matter what I do, it always ends up like tepid brown water.
[Alex makes a face at the mention of the bad coffee and then takes a sip of the good before nodding and looking at the books she's got around her, taking up a fair bit of residence on the table. The question makes her grin a bit, in a way that felt more than a little silly to her.
But she still did it.]
Yeah, my partner is here now. Well, he's my partner now too, he wasn't then. At least in that way. But he showed up this past month and now we're living together. It helps with the sleep. A lot, actually. I wish I had known that ,months ago.
[Not that Alex would have done anything. Granted her sleep was better when she crashed on Richard's couch, because her lack of sleep wasn't as bad as it had been before that. Or as bad as it was when she'd arrived here.]
Perhaps because someone at your office is aware of your habits? [By now, the thought of a woman working in a professional setting no long surprises her, and she feels she could tease Alex as much as she'd like, so long as the woman is taking care of herself.]
[What she says next gets her attention. Of course, she knew of her and Mr. Strand, but to hear it in context. For all she thought humanity as silly back home, so habits refused to die.] I believe I have met this gentlemen friend of yours. He did say you were sleeping better.
[And from her rambling, she could only say their friendship was deep-that was all she would say on the matter.] He is a Doctor Richard Strand, yes?
Maybe. But that would be really obnxious to mess with the coffee maker. Even my friend Nic wouldn't stoop that far!
[Probably. He better not. Besides, he wasn't much better than she was with what he did on Tanis. But the mention of Strand just makes her smile bigger.]
Yeah. That's him. [A beat.] I'm sorry if he was an ass to you, but I would guess you understand men who are asses at times.
[Look, she's not saying she's compared him to Darcy before and she hasn't even gotten the hotel proposal yet but she's definitely done it before to Nic and Amalia when she was drunk.]
He seemed alright to me. [In truth she felt nothing in way of an opinion for him.] A little proud, perhaps, but then we met during the festival of the lanterns, and you cannot deny that the locals here could be rather pressing with their traditions. I had to lend him some books of my own, just so as to give him some peace.
[She eyed the try of cookies on the table.] May I?
Go right ahead! [Alex lifted the plate of cookies and offered it to Elizabeth with a grin.] I should have offered before, honestly.
[Sometimes Alex let herself be easily distracted. It was a thing that happened more when she was less rested, but also something that happened when she was talking about Strand or the show more.]
But yeah, I think he's being on his best behavior right now, because he's so new and I asked him not to get punched. Sometimes his attitude makes that harder than I'd like it to be, honestly. [But it's clear that she wouldn't change a thing.]
[She accepted one of the cookies, not taking a bite just yet.] To hear that, he sounds like someone else I know. [She smiled, recalling the book. However there are many details that are wrong, the spirit was still here.] Actually, he does remind me a little of Mr. Darcy, if you would believe it.
[Only she referenced herself telling him not to get himself punched, so she guessed Dr. Strand wasn't skilled in the deadly arts.] He is a doctor, yes? I suppose with all of that studying and research, social skills had to be sacrificed.
Yeah. He definitely has his Darcy-like moments, sometimes. And he can be just as rude and headstrong. [Alex doesn't even know about his most Darcy moment yet, but it's certainly something that she will probably mention later on. Instead Alex just smiles and takes a long sip of her coffee before setting it down and gesturing to the cookie that Elizabeth was holding.]
You should try it. They have the best cookies in the city here. But yes, he's a doctor and he's a skeptic, and I swear he thinks that niceness is something that will make people believe him less rather than more.
[Someone she once interviewed described Strand as someone who enjoyed pulling the blanket off of people who needed religion, and while she once agreed, now she didn't.]
