exploration mingle: CITY EXPANSION
what: exploration mingle: city expansion
when: April 15 - May 15
where: Around the power relay station and abandoned amusement park.
warnings: likely violence; please put any necessary warnings in the subject lines

One of the major and most highly-valued cultural concepts in Riverview is that of exploration, expansion. Especially now that, with the recent influx of new arrivals, as the portal kicks into high gear for reasons not entirely known, the Inhabited City, already comfortably full, is rapidly becoming overpopulated. With all the refugees from other worlds pouring in from day to day, the city's safe space and resources are being taxed to their breaking point.
Right now, exploration and expansion is key, and each month, the government has decided to focus on a particular objective, in order to unite citizens in expanding, securing, and supplying the city for everyone's benefit.
the story so far
Exploration & Expansion Progress Report ● Electric Rails ● Amusement Perk ● SUBMIT YOUR SOLUTION
After city resident Ava Orlova accidentally brought an old power relay back online while testing her powers by running energy through an abandoned SkyTram line, a whole new opportunity for expansion presented itself, and the city's residents were more than willing to take that opportunity as far as they could. Together, teams of volunteers from the Quarantine took part in a widespread operation to secure the area surrounding the newly awakened power relay and the tram line that leads to the area in an attempt to make it more accessible and safe to work on.
After the line and area were decently secure, Ava Orlova once again headed into the area with a team to clear out any remaining monsters and restart the generator attached to the relay. Work on this project was carried on by Tony Stark (MCU) and a team, who used arc reactors to effectively and reliably repower the area. While it hasn't been officially opened to the public or entirely secured, several residents have made efforts to develop the abandoned amusement park, including starting up one of the generators to run the Ferris Wheel. Jim Kirk has done surveys to find which structures can and cannot be reclaimed. Another team will be spearheading clean up and securing of the hot springs that are also in the area.
This month's mission is to completely secure the area and start moving the inner wall of the Inhabited City out to encompass the newly-powered area, including the amusement park.
how it works
● Phases: Each prompt is a different phase of the operation. Characters may partake in whichever part of the operation they choose, whether it is a large and prominent part, or a more of a backseat or support role.
● Completion: When next month's exploration mingle goes up, the mission featured on this exploration mingle will be considered complete, and game canon, providing the entry has 200+ comments on it.
● Submissions: If your character and/or your character's team has threaded something out to completion, or if you have added and solved a complication to the mission via player plot either on this log or elsewhere in the game, please use the "submit your solution" link above to submit that information so it can be added to the Progress Report.
● Reward: The reward for completion of this month's exploration mingle is that the amusement park will be open in June, with an amusement park prompt in the Prijata log.

The main method of access to the new area of the city is via the electric rails of the SkyTram, which are currently powered by the generator and arc reactors placed in the area. A previous city-wide operation has provided some security to this line of access by placing temporary laser fences on either side of the rail, but the solution is just that - temporary. This phase is for characters to either help with moving the stronger inner wall to encompass the new area or who want to serve as protection for characters moving the wall.
While the inner wall is very solid and secure, unlike the outer wall it was created to be portable through use of construction equipment and drivers, and there are additional segments of wall in storage that can be added to make it longer. The drawback is that, while the wall is being moved, it is not providing security for the city. This means that, besides people who are willing to contribute their labor and expertise with the moving of the wall, people willing to defend the gap in the wall and the people moving the fence are more than welcome. The more the merrier!
Once the inner wall has been moved to encompass the area including the generators, power relay station, and the amusement park and hot springs, it will be time to start reclaiming the area. This means a lot of hard work cleaning and clearing out foliage from the area, as well as fighters to rid the area of monsters in whatever way is necessary. This step will allow for the amusement park to be assessed at a more in-depth level for functionality, and brought back into working order.
The final phase of the operation is for tech and science teams to get the park and relay station operational and includes both characters able to provide technical or engineering abilities as well as construction crews to get the rides, games, and food stands operational. It also requires characters with electric or energy abilities and electrical engineers or other experts to completely stabilize the power grid and get all of the generators back online to power the area.
It will also require fighters and surveyors to scout the line and make any last minute notations of problem areas in the fence, and escort tech teams out to correct them before the area is safe to open to the public.
Have an idea for a mission-adjacent plot, or want to make up an unexpected plot twist or problem and solve it with your character? Just write up a starter, and don't forget to give yourself props by submitting it for the Progress Report.

Phase II | Youth/Community Group Cleanup... Mingle? [OTA]
A: Entrance and fairways/roads, including small overgrown bridges that don't seem to go anywhere, overgrown plants poking through the pavement, the occasional roaming small animals and mama foxes (is that a fox?) crossing the road. Since these are open spaces, there shouldn't be any monsters lurking, but just in case, there will be people posted about to help guard. Whether you're cleaning, guarding, or making chitchat with either, feel free to have that here. Oh and don't touch the peanuts in that ancient peanut vendor cart. Really, don't.
B. House of Horrors - did you really need to clean this during the night? No. Ok then. Day or night, the place certainly give one the creeps. Daytime lets a few shafts of sunlight in through displaced shingles, but eyes glow deeper within, signalling that new owners have moved in since the time the amusement park has last been used. Critters taking shelter are mostly of the small-medium sized variety. Most are docile unless threatened or surprised by all the sudden activity in the area. Please be careful of falling props. Eerily realistic falling props.
C. Rides, rides, rides! - Rollercoasters may or may not be working still, hopefully you aren't on one if it starts moving due to gravity or leftover electricity fritz. Please be careful! Daring rescues encouraged. Rustier rides may need more TLC than others, but hacking away at all the overgrown weeds and things is definitely a good start. Clearing debris from those that have already fallen prey to the elements and shooing away any wildlife, small or large, and being very careful about that one gigantic hornets nest may ensue. (Tip, kill it with fire).

[Bucky is here with the Guard, officially speaking. Despite being a Squad Captain of Search and Rescue, normally, he does regular work with the organization as well. Whatever work they'll give him. He's taken charge of an area; others are set to move the wall with the heavy equipment, and he's patrolling the current gap in the inner wall, giving orders to other fighters when necessary.
All the noise and bustle around the area is bound to draw predators this way, creatures looking for an easy human snack. He pretty much leaves the actual wall to people who are good at that kind of thing, and he's happy to take over the fighting himself whenever necessary.
Sure enough, one section of the wall has been removed for barely ten minutes when there is rustling at the tree-line. Bucky slides into a defensive stance just as three huge, purplish leonid monsters with horns and stunted bat wings fling themselves out of the underbrush as a pack, snarling loudly, jaws dripping. Bucky rushes to meet one, the hard-light shield flaring up on his arm, and he jams it into the creature's jaws with the left arm.] Hold the line!
[phase i: closed to tony stark (mcu)]
[More of those chimeras keep coming, drawn by some kind of pack instinct, or something. They're big and they're powerful, all corded muscle and snapping jaws and massive teeth, intent on getting through the open space into the inhabited city where easier prey awaits. Their hides are exceedingly tough and hard to get through; smaller rounds from his handgun aren't doing much, and in close combat, he's in no place to reach for something bigger.
That isn't stopping him, though, from grappling with one of the creatures and meeting teeth and claws straight on. At this point, he's using his left arm almost as a battering ram, letting the creature wrap its toothy jaws around the metal. Gritting his teeth, he wraps his fingers around a wet tongue, and electrocutes it. It clamps down with a hideous screech of tooth on metal as it jolts and seizes, but two others are about to move in for the kill while Bucky is occupied.]
[phase ii: OPEN]
[Bucky is back patrolling the area once it's deemed safe enough to start construction work. Not everything has been cleared out; there are all kinds of nooks and crannies for creatures to hide, and he's moving around with the fighters, at the ready for whatever might pop out. Still scraped up from previous encounters, he's not looking fantastic, but he still prowls with an easy grace, so he must not be too bad off.]
Let's double-check this building over here.

Steve Rogers (MCU) | OTA
[Steve moves ahead of the construction equipment, close enough to remain in sight and able to quickly double back to the others, but far enough ahead to keep some distance between him and the equipment. He's acquired a simple metal shield for the mission that rests on his forearm. He moves at an even pace, scanning ahead for movement, and keeping an ear out for sounds that shouldn't be there.
A shuffling sound ahead bring him to a stop and he raises a hand a motions a few other guards forward. They can't lose time by making the equipment drivers stop. They'll just have to deal with the threat as they move.]
Whatever it is, don't let it draw you too far away from the group. If it runs away, let it go for now. We need to keep moving.
phase ii;
[Steve puts his strength to good use helping clear the area of large debris and attacking the foliage with gardening tools mainly. He's always enjoyed walking side-by-side with people, and the work they're doing makes him feel like he's accomplishing something. Something that will hopefully be overall positive once they get the area fixed up and clear of monsters.
Occasionally he can be found taking a break, sitting a little distance away from where everyone is working, with a sketch pad in his lap. He sketches the area around him, the people working. Ideally, he'd like to sketch the area in its different stages of rebuilding.]

[Knowing that the tricorder could be invaluable as a lookout during the clean up process, Beverly volunteers a few afternoons when she can to help out. She has to admit, there is something spooky in walking around an abandoned amusement park, with its faded signs and quiet rides covered in foliage. As the team she is with moves into the tangle of weeds and vines under a roller coaster, she stays slightly ahead, scanning for any signs of danger.
A blip appears on the tricorder. She motions for people to stop. Quietly:]
There's something ahead.
[Apparently, she was not quiet enough. A flock of small... birds... bats? Whatever they are, they fly out of the brush in a shrieking burst, dive bombing anyone who doesn't duck quick enough.]
iv. med tent/wildcard
[When she's not out surveying, Beverly will often be at a field med tent instead, back closer to the wall. Anything requiring surgery, of course, she'll have to send you out with her team to the hospital, but most injuries, even a few stitches, she can take care of right here.]

Jace Wayland | OTA
While Jace takes his job seriously, here and back home, he also knows his capabilities. He's been trained his entire life to fight and to die if that's what it takes. So he's not really distracted. Not really. He's armed with blades of varying sizes, strapped to his legs and back, but he's also holding his phone, scrolling through recipes between careful scans of the area. He stays just outside the perimeter of work, taking a stand between what monsters that lie beyond and the good people doing their job.
"Using a premade mix is cheating." He grumbles and continues his search.
Phase ii
Not much has changed. He's a bit less clean after helping to take out a few over-eager monsters trying to charge through the gap, but the search continues. He's not interested in easy recipes. He wants a challenge. Something to distract and take up as much time in his head as possible. Something Magnus and Alec would like.
He's even considered asking TJ over for dinner. Maybe. As friends.

Shuri [OPEN]
She starts by scouting down the railings to find structural weak points and locations that need to be completely reworked before she can proceed to then make the system safer and more efficient.
Shuri has one of her panther shotguns tied to her hip for protection however her focus is on the screen in her hand. She has one of the spheres from her bracelet connected to a handheld tablet. It isn't an ideal set up but it gives her enough power to work and lets her project her designs for a more accurate comparison.
She has a backpack that's filled with food but she leaves it at one of the track points as she slowly makes her way down the line.]
[ooc: feel free to come work with shuri, share lunch with her or safe her from something while she's not paying attention! I am up for whatever but she'll be working on the rails for a few days.]

finn | ota
[ Running escort is sort of part and parcel with the Perimeter Guard gig by this point in time. Finn knows how this works. He's no engineer or construction crew, of course, so escorting is very much the primary objective as far as he's concerned. Running defense for the people who need it and for the gaps in the wall is something he can handle.
Finn is a very team-oriented person at heart; he'll be going out of his way to try to introduce himself and coordinate with any other Perimeter Guard members or volunteer combatants while the group is traveling. All the better to avoid any trouble they can't handle. ]
We still have everybody?
phase iii.
[ The second verse is... more or less the same as the first in this case, albeit with less traveling and more contained work. The escort teams run a little smaller in this situation, but he doesn't mind too much. It's pretty involved technical work. Better to have a team that can mobilize and fall back more easily than to have a party of ten to try to wrangle.
Finn is very sharply focused on his work-- this is one of the times when it pays off to be bad at relaxing and good at hypervigilance. But he's not necessarily against conversation or helping out with other things as needed, whether it's a quick monster kill or moving some equipment around. He's done enough duty rotations to not take issue with helping move things around. ]
phase iv.
