exploration mingle: CITY EXPANSION

who: everyone in Riverview!
what: exploration mingle: city expansion
when: April 15 - May 15
where: Around the power relay station and abandoned amusement park.
warnings: likely violence; please put any necessary warnings in the subject lines

riverview: monthly exploration mission

One of the major and most highly-valued cultural concepts in Riverview is that of exploration, expansion. Especially now that, with the recent influx of new arrivals, as the portal kicks into high gear for reasons not entirely known, the Inhabited City, already comfortably full, is rapidly becoming overpopulated. With all the refugees from other worlds pouring in from day to day, the city's safe space and resources are being taxed to their breaking point.

Right now, exploration and expansion is key, and each month, the government has decided to focus on a particular objective, in order to unite citizens in expanding, securing, and supplying the city for everyone's benefit.

the story so far

Exploration & Expansion Progress ReportElectric RailsAmusement PerkSUBMIT YOUR SOLUTION

After city resident Ava Orlova accidentally brought an old power relay back online while testing her powers by running energy through an abandoned SkyTram line, a whole new opportunity for expansion presented itself, and the city's residents were more than willing to take that opportunity as far as they could. Together, teams of volunteers from the Quarantine took part in a widespread operation to secure the area surrounding the newly awakened power relay and the tram line that leads to the area in an attempt to make it more accessible and safe to work on.

After the line and area were decently secure, Ava Orlova once again headed into the area with a team to clear out any remaining monsters and restart the generator attached to the relay. Work on this project was carried on by Tony Stark (MCU) and a team, who used arc reactors to effectively and reliably repower the area. While it hasn't been officially opened to the public or entirely secured, several residents have made efforts to develop the abandoned amusement park, including starting up one of the generators to run the Ferris Wheel. Jim Kirk has done surveys to find which structures can and cannot be reclaimed. Another team will be spearheading clean up and securing of the hot springs that are also in the area.

This month's mission is to completely secure the area and start moving the inner wall of the Inhabited City out to encompass the newly-powered area, including the amusement park.

how it works

Phases: Each prompt is a different phase of the operation. Characters may partake in whichever part of the operation they choose, whether it is a large and prominent part, or a more of a backseat or support role.

Completion: When next month's exploration mingle goes up, the mission featured on this exploration mingle will be considered complete, and game canon, providing the entry has 200+ comments on it.

Submissions: If your character and/or your character's team has threaded something out to completion, or if you have added and solved a complication to the mission via player plot either on this log or elsewhere in the game, please use the "submit your solution" link above to submit that information so it can be added to the Progress Report.

Reward: The reward for completion of this month's exploration mingle is that the amusement park will be open in June, with an amusement park prompt in the Prijata log.

phase i: electric rails

The main method of access to the new area of the city is via the electric rails of the SkyTram, which are currently powered by the generator and arc reactors placed in the area. A previous city-wide operation has provided some security to this line of access by placing temporary laser fences on either side of the rail, but the solution is just that - temporary. This phase is for characters to either help with moving the stronger inner wall to encompass the new area or who want to serve as protection for characters moving the wall.

While the inner wall is very solid and secure, unlike the outer wall it was created to be portable through use of construction equipment and drivers, and there are additional segments of wall in storage that can be added to make it longer. The drawback is that, while the wall is being moved, it is not providing security for the city. This means that, besides people who are willing to contribute their labor and expertise with the moving of the wall, people willing to defend the gap in the wall and the people moving the fence are more than welcome. The more the merrier!

phase ii: amusement perk: cleaning house

Once the inner wall has been moved to encompass the area including the generators, power relay station, and the amusement park and hot springs, it will be time to start reclaiming the area. This means a lot of hard work cleaning and clearing out foliage from the area, as well as fighters to rid the area of monsters in whatever way is necessary. This step will allow for the amusement park to be assessed at a more in-depth level for functionality, and brought back into working order.

phase iii: amusement perk: get this party started

The final phase of the operation is for tech and science teams to get the park and relay station operational and includes both characters able to provide technical or engineering abilities as well as construction crews to get the rides, games, and food stands operational. It also requires characters with electric or energy abilities and electrical engineers or other experts to completely stabilize the power grid and get all of the generators back online to power the area.

It will also require fighters and surveyors to scout the line and make any last minute notations of problem areas in the fence, and escort tech teams out to correct them before the area is safe to open to the public.

phase iv: wildcard

Have an idea for a mission-adjacent plot, or want to make up an unexpected plot twist or problem and solve it with your character? Just write up a starter, and don't forget to give yourself props by submitting it for the Progress Report.

Phase II | Youth/Community Group Cleanup... Mingle? [OTA]

[personal profile] timmers 2018-04-16 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
[Following Tim's post, he's hoping to get a bunch of volunteers to show up for the effort. They'll be starting at the entrance and working their way in alongside any other groups that may be working on the site. Dropping some potential prompts here.]

A: Entrance and fairways/roads, including small overgrown bridges that don't seem to go anywhere, overgrown plants poking through the pavement, the occasional roaming small animals and mama foxes (is that a fox?) crossing the road. Since these are open spaces, there shouldn't be any monsters lurking, but just in case, there will be people posted about to help guard. Whether you're cleaning, guarding, or making chitchat with either, feel free to have that here. Oh and don't touch the peanuts in that ancient peanut vendor cart. Really, don't.

B. House of Horrors - did you really need to clean this during the night? No. Ok then. Day or night, the place certainly give one the creeps. Daytime lets a few shafts of sunlight in through displaced shingles, but eyes glow deeper within, signalling that new owners have moved in since the time the amusement park has last been used. Critters taking shelter are mostly of the small-medium sized variety. Most are docile unless threatened or surprised by all the sudden activity in the area. Please be careful of falling props. Eerily realistic falling props.

C. Rides, rides, rides! - Rollercoasters may or may not be working still, hopefully you aren't on one if it starts moving due to gravity or leftover electricity fritz. Please be careful! Daring rescues encouraged. Rustier rides may need more TLC than others, but hacking away at all the overgrown weeds and things is definitely a good start. Clearing debris from those that have already fallen prey to the elements and shooing away any wildlife, small or large, and being very careful about that one gigantic hornets nest may ensue. (Tip, kill it with fire).

i. Entrance area

[Even as she's been busy settling into her studies, Makoto knows she needs something more than her studies to keep her going in a place like this. She's been researching how to make the best of her old hobbies, yes, but she's been itching for something more, some way she can help even while she's not sure if her Persona is present or strong enough for her to be a credible help with the more dangerous tasks.

Still. Clearing up an amusement park sounds like something she can handle - she's never been afraid of working hard and she's definitely doing her share of clearing away debris and pulling up plants (and quietly wishing Haru were around to make sure they weren't pulling anything worth cultivating).

But she's also that one person who likes to make sure that everyone is looking after themselves. So she'll be going around offering water to those she hasn't seen taking a break in a while, along with a question that's intended as more concerned than nagging:]

Here. When was the last time you stopped to eat something?

[And you bet she's brought protein bars and other healthy snacks to share with people who might have gone a little too long without.]

ii. House of Horrors

[No way Makoto is brave enough to clear out somewhere like this after dark. Even though she knows it's just an amusement park attraction, it's still dark and Makoto is still not as comfortable in the dark as she would care to admit.

But daytime should be okay, right? Even with the eyes on her, she can just pretend it's like the Shadows in Mementos only if she doesn't disturb them then they'll leave her alone. Hopefully.

For the most part, she sticks to clearing out the entrance areas but eventually she runs out of things to do there and ventures deeper. She even feels okay doing so, for a while, with so much to do that keeps her just on the edge of distracted.

Until something drops onto her shoulder and she can't stop the shriek leaving her mouth as she scrabbles to brush the offending item away and just hopes it's a prop rather than something living.]

[phase i: OPEN]
[Bucky is here with the Guard, officially speaking. Despite being a Squad Captain of Search and Rescue, normally, he does regular work with the organization as well. Whatever work they'll give him. He's taken charge of an area; others are set to move the wall with the heavy equipment, and he's patrolling the current gap in the inner wall, giving orders to other fighters when necessary.

All the noise and bustle around the area is bound to draw predators this way, creatures looking for an easy human snack. He pretty much leaves the actual wall to people who are good at that kind of thing, and he's happy to take over the fighting himself whenever necessary.

Sure enough, one section of the wall has been removed for barely ten minutes when there is rustling at the tree-line. Bucky slides into a defensive stance just as three huge, purplish leonid monsters with horns and stunted bat wings fling themselves out of the underbrush as a pack, snarling loudly, jaws dripping. Bucky rushes to meet one, the hard-light shield flaring up on his arm, and he jams it into the creature's jaws with the left arm.]
Hold the line!

[phase i: closed to tony stark (mcu)]
[More of those chimeras keep coming, drawn by some kind of pack instinct, or something. They're big and they're powerful, all corded muscle and snapping jaws and massive teeth, intent on getting through the open space into the inhabited city where easier prey awaits. Their hides are exceedingly tough and hard to get through; smaller rounds from his handgun aren't doing much, and in close combat, he's in no place to reach for something bigger.

That isn't stopping him, though, from grappling with one of the creatures and meeting teeth and claws straight on. At this point, he's using his left arm almost as a battering ram, letting the creature wrap its toothy jaws around the metal. Gritting his teeth, he wraps his fingers around a wet tongue, and electrocutes it. It clamps down with a hideous screech of tooth on metal as it jolts and seizes, but two others are about to move in for the kill while Bucky is occupied.]

[phase ii: OPEN]
[Bucky is back patrolling the area once it's deemed safe enough to start construction work. Not everything has been cleared out; there are all kinds of nooks and crannies for creatures to hide, and he's moving around with the fighters, at the ready for whatever might pop out. Still scraped up from previous encounters, he's not looking fantastic, but he still prowls with an easy grace, so he must not be too bad off.]

Let's double-check this building over here.

[One of the chimeras hunkers down and then leaps at Bucky -- only to met mid-air by a bright flash and go down with a high-pitched yelp. The sound of moving metal is audible even over the sounds of the rest of the pack as Iron Man comes up to Bucky's side, one arm still outstretched, repulsor bright and ready.]

I don't mean to criticize, but I'm not sure letting things chew on you is a great tactic.

[It's teasing more than any real censure, Tony's well aware that Bucky knows what he's doing. He still can't help a professional wince at the sight of mangled metal.]

phase i
[The armor might be Tony's pride and joy, but it isn't exactly construction equipment. He does some heavy lifting where he can, but mostly he's trading off helping out with a bit more delicate maneuvering and taking a step back to keep guard. The armor's sensors are on full alert and Tony himself is as aware as he can be.

But even Tony can only do so many things at once. He's just stepped back from a section of the wall they're trying to shift when his HUD throws up an alarm seconds before he sees movement heading for them fast.]

Get down!

[The command is barked at anyone around him, amplified by the armor's vocal filters as he spins around and puts his hands up, repulsors already warming up to try to catch whatever is coming.]

phase iii
[With everything significantly more cleared out, Tony's feeling a bit more comfortable with leaving the armor at home. He's still got one of the gauntlets with him, but that's just because he's paranoid. He keeps it hanging from his tool belt for the most part, he needs all the dexterity he can get for this bit.

He's focusing mainly on the generators, making sure they're in good working order before he follows the power lines to the next one down, checking in on them as he goes aw well. He may nod occasionally to anyone in the area who seems to be playing security, but Tony's tunnel-visioning at the moment, focused almost entirely on his work.

Which is probably why he's started talking to himself, the way he does in his workshop. One sorry-looking switch box gets an almost sympathetic looking grimace, and Tony pats it comfortingly as he hunkers down.]

Yeah, sorry buddy. We're going to be here for a while.

[Rogue had deemed herself a floater of sorts, providing aerial support while the Starks were grounded and otherwise occupied with the more technical aspects of this section of the wall. She offered to provide heavy lifting, but the general consensus was that she holds more value as a mobile, invulnerable fighter than a mutant crane operator.

So when she catches sudden movement at the edge of her sight line, she's already banking down towards it, surveying the area with a more critical eye before deciding a course of action. With Bucky having already chosen a target, she takes the middle of the three, putting herself right in the middle of the fray by cutting sharply and landing hard on the beast. She drives her heels hard into the creature's back right above the wings, a terrible crunching noise following the impact as she twists to grab hold of it's horns.

You looked bored. [She explains cheerfully, or as cheerfully as one could while straining to savagely break the neck of a giant monster.]

a. Entrance Area

[ Stephanie shows up only five minutes late, clutching an iced coffee and looking nervous. She hasn't really talked to new people here in person, only on the network. She's ready to work, though - her thick blonde hair is tied back, and she's wearing overalls. Of course she is. She waves to the nearest person, offering a grin that's as sunny as humanly possible before absolutely downing her coffee and starting to clear plants away.

It's kinda nice, to do physical labor without having to think about the easiest way to land a punch on the nearest baddie. This is almost as therapeutic. She glances at the nearest person, offering a grin. ]

This isn't so bad, huh? At least we'll have an amusement park. You know, for the youth.

b. House of Horrors

[ It might be day, but this is undeniably creepy. Steph has dealt with way worse - chasing a serial killer with a ridiculously unpronounceable name through the sewers, for one. But she feels just a little bit more on-edge here in the dark - especially when she can't help but remember-

(a dark, laughing skull and the whir of a drill, the useless weight of a gun in her hand)

-and god, Steph, you need to stop being so melodramatic. It's a freakin' haunted house, and she's literal universes away from Gotham. Everything is Fine.

That doesn't mean that she won't freak the fuck out if you startle her, though. Best be careful. ]

[Hiccup only sort of fits the definition of 'youth' - he's technically 21, his birthday come and gone in February, but they seemed like they could use the help and so he's shown up with Toothless, who rarely leaves his side except for Hiccup to attend his classes. In jeans and a Riverview University sweatshirt, a new work boot on his right foot, he's ready to do grunt work, and with a leather bag of tools, he's ready for handy-work. Whatever might be asked of him.

Toothless is less interested in amusement parks, and while Hiccup will call him over to help with any heavy lifting, he mostly lets the dragon prowl the area and play guard-dragon over the group of humans. If anything monstrous tries to wander in, Toothless will know about and warn him.

Smudged with dirt from pulling up overgrown weeds around the base of a ticket stand, Hiccup glances up, smiles wide to see a familiar face (and water - it's April and it's already seeming to get warm here, to him).]
Hey! Oh, uh, breakfast, I guess?

[personal profile] phantomqueen 2018-04-17 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's probably for the best that Makoto had already seen Toothless in calmer circumstances because she's not sure how well she'd have focused with half a mind towards wondering if she was supposed to be worrying more about the roaming dragon than she was. As it is, she finds it more reassuring to know they'll probably get fair warning about any trouble that gets that little bit too close.

And if Toothless is around, it's safe to assume his - owner? handler? she never did quite determine what the right term would be - is probably not too far away. Makoto doesn't deliberately seek him out, not when there's so much else to be done, but that's not to say she's not happy for the familiar face when she finds him.

Even if that comes with a soft tut at his response.]

Well, don't push yourself too hard. I know there's a lot of people excited about this place but it's not going anywhere.

[It's not that she thinks he can't look after himself. But someone might as well remind people to take care of themselves and that someone might as well be Makoto given she'd be asking the same questions either way.]

[ Monsters, huh?

Knowing that they can summon their personas makes the idea simple. He's even tempted to send a call to the other Makoto he knows. It might go easier with multiple people with multiple personas.... but then again, broadcasting their powers might not be the best idea. Akira is still very hesitant and very not willing to trust of broadcasting himself.

Then again, nearly a year of having to watch how he acts has probably done that.

Instead he has shown up with Makoto (namely due to her insistence and his natural will to help people) to check things out. He keeps an eye on the monsters that scramble around. Just in case. ]
phantomqueen: (01)

[personal profile] phantomqueen 2018-04-17 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[If she's honest, Makoto's had ulterior motives for keeping Akira this close. It's not like she's insisting that he help her with her work, specifically, but the darker areas still make her nervous and it helps to have someone with her who knows that and won't be unduly surprised when something startles her more than it actually should.

On the other hand, his alertness over the movements further within is doing little to settle her concerns over what might be further within. As though she's not already worried about what she might disturb while clearing away debris - and all the more so because she's not even sure she can summon her Persona any more.

But hey. Focus on the positives and maybe things will go more smoothly. She hopes.]

Thanks for coming out here with me. I figured if people are so keen to get this up and running, we need all the hands we can get.

[ Cisco, like Tony, is paranoid. Despite the guards all around - plenty of them sporting weapons that Cisco had designed for them - he has a pulse rifle slung across his back as he works on helping Tony to get the generators back up. The process goes twice as fast with the two of them there, and this way, if any sort of arc reactor-related questions come up, Cisco doesn't have far to guy to find the guy himself.

But the two of them are mostly working apart from one another, covering more ground. Except when problems come up. And boy... this one's a real doozy. ]

Hey, Tony.

[ Cisco's just jogged up to the switch box that Tony's halfway through repairing. He's a little out of breath from hurrying here, braces his hands on his thighs for a moment before explaining: ]

I uh- I think I'm gonna need some help. You know that room with the transformers in it that I said I was gonna go just check on?

[ Cisco gives a kind of half-shrug. ]

Not to get all Indiana Jones on you, but there are just - there are way too many motherfucking snakes in that motherfucking room, and they're all up in the transformers themselves, I can't just blast 'em out or I'll end up wrecking the whole thing.

[ This is going to take either a level of precision that Cisco's rife skills and powers both lack, or it's going to take more than one pair of hands, and quite some time. ]

A shuffling sound ahead bring him to a stop and he raises a hand a motions a few other guards forward. They can't lose time by making the equipment drivers stop. They'll just have to deal with the threat as they move.]

[Why do Mundanes think that haunted houses are fun? It probably has something to do with the fact that they don't know that the things that go bump in the night is real. [As a flyer that's able to help with moving large, heavy objects in a pinch, Rogue's taken to the sky to not only aid in protecting the people and equipment, but to take inventory of those fighting below her. If they need her, she'll jump into the fray for certain, but there are several higher objectives at play here and she's good at multitasking.

One person she rather wanted to see in action was the Cap she just had the pleasure of meeting, and once she spots him (the shield makes for a familiar silhouette), Rogue drops down closer and follows. Remaining high enough to keep a bird's eye on the field, her attention shifts immediately at sudden noise, and she immediately flies higher and forward for a hopefully better view of the noise's source.

[The sound of the armor is unmistakable, and Bucky offers a jaunty two-fingered salute with his free hand, a 'thanks for the assist'. He's always comfortable with Tony having his back; the man's never let him down before and he doesn't think he will in the future. Gritting his teeth against the acrid stench of burning flesh, he pulls at his left arm, trapped in the dead chimera's teeth.] Yeah, it probably ain't my best idea. Their skins are tougher than I figured.

[The third chimera is prowling in a loose circle around them at this point, wary about the bright light of Iron Man's repulsor, having seen what it did to its fellow. It's searching for an opening, and Bucky doesn't want to give it one. It needs to be taken out. Unfortunately, his arm is going to be a problem.

When he finally manages to wrench it out, he lists slightly to the left because it's gone to dead weight, something shorted in the inner workings, torn wire maybe. One of the joins between the plates has been pushed open by a tooth, and it sparks alarmingly. Bucky curses, fingers going to the shoulder join to release the arm from the socket.]

Oh, you know. This is same old same old. [Bucky might not be enhanced, save for his left arm, but he fights hard, with an efficient brutality that comes from years and years of training and conditioning. The Winter Soldier was a ghost story for young spies for a reason, though these days, he only has to put his skills to work against beasts and monsters. It's better that way, easier. There is no moral question whether or not he's doing good and protecting people, trying to make up for the shit he did.

So he fights hard and single-mindedly, but he's not going to say no to a little help when these things are difficult to take down solo. They work as a pack, almost a hivemind, and apparently never by themselves. Sparks fly from Bucky's left arm, lodged in the left chimera's mouth, and send convulsions through it. Rogue has the one in the middle pretty well occupied, but the third has skittered off, is preparing itself to lunge.]
Heads up!

[Grunting with the effort, he hurls the body of the dying chimera clear over Rogue's head to intercept the third. It won't take it out, but it does knock it back several yards and it struggles under the weight of the creature.]

[Bucky isn't one of the people around here that might think the two Steves are interchangeable, but he won't shy away from working with the Steve that isn't his own brother, partner, friend. He doesn't shy away from working with anyone, holding the title that he does within the Perimeter Guard. After a year of service, he's risen in the ranks to Squad Captain, and he's more than proven himself capable.

He has the device on his arm for the hard-light shield that Steve had been using previously, before they swapped out vibranium for tech with each other, and from the looks of Bucky, he's already been in a few scrapes today. He's changed out his handguns as well, for a bigger rifle.

Bucky glances over at Steve briefly before his gaze is back to the noise ahead, trying to work out in his head how big it is, what it might be.]

If it runs away, it's just going to double back and come around from another side, or bypass us entirely to get through the gap in the wall.

[At one point during the day, Bucky reluctantly has to seek medical attention. He's grappled with several creatures by now with varying degrees of success (success being measured in how unscathed he comes out of the fight). The old soldier is kind of a mess as he pushes aside the tent flap and steps in; he's sweaty, dirty, bruised and bloodied, and... missing his entire left arm. The left sleeve of his t-shirt is empty, though there doesn't seem to be any blood. In truth, his bionic prosthetic is just getting fixed up with someone else, but it can seem alarming without a clear look at the metal socket built into his body.

What he's really here for is the three gashes on his back, from one shoulder-blade to the other side, deep enough to require stitches and sluggishly oozing blood through the rips in his shirt. He caught the wrong side of some claws during a scuffle.]

Is the doctor in?

[ Steph isn't a fighter in any official capacity; she's got formal training from Batman, and was overall pretty decent as a superhero. She came here with Tim's group, but Steph is pretty restless. She takes to wandering around the area, before she comes across a highly-professional looking group. One that's probably way too professional for her to be around, but she can't think about that for very long, because all of the sudden, some kind of monster comes from the forest. ]

What the hell?!

[ But one of the dudes who seems to be in charge barks some orders, and Steph can fight well enough that she doesn't hesitate to run at one of the monsters.

Of course, she's a teenage girl in overalls without a weapon. But her heart is in the right place, and she manages to land a solid kick on the side of one of the creatures. ]
