riverview: monthly exploration mission

One of the major and most highly-valued cultural concepts in Riverview is that of exploration, expansion. Especially now that, with the recent influx of new arrivals, as the portal kicks into high gear for reasons not entirely known, the Inhabited City, already comfortably full, is rapidly becoming overpopulated. With all the refugees from other worlds pouring in from day to day, the city's safe space and resources are being taxed to their breaking point.

Right now, exploration and expansion is key, and each month, the government has decided to focus on a particular objective, in order to unite citizens in expanding, securing, and supplying the city for everyone's benefit.

After city resident Ava Orlova accidentally brought an old power relay back online while testing her powers by running energy through an abandoned SkyTram line, a whole new opportunity for expansion presented itself, and the city's residents were more than willing to take that opportunity as far as they could. Together, teams of volunteers from the Quarantine took part in a widespread operation to secure the area surrounding the newly awakened power relay and the tram line that leads to the area in an attempt to make it more accessible and safe to work on.

After the line and area were decently secure, Ava Orlova once again headed into the area with a team to clear out any remaining monsters and restart the generator attached to the relay. Work on this project was carried on by Tony Stark (MCU) and a team, who used arc reactors to effectively and reliably repower the area. While it hasn't been officially opened to the public or entirely secured, several residents have made efforts to develop the abandoned amusement park, including starting up one of the generators to run the Ferris Wheel. Jim Kirk has done surveys to find which structures can and cannot be reclaimed. Another team will be spearheading clean up and securing of the hot springs that are also in the area.

This month's mission is to completely secure the area and start moving the inner wall of the Inhabited City out to encompass the newly-powered area, including the amusement park.

how it works

● Phases: Each prompt is a different phase of the operation. Characters may partake in whichever part of the operation they choose, whether it is a large and prominent part, or a more of a backseat or support role.

● Completion: When next month's exploration mingle goes up, the mission featured on this exploration mingle will be considered complete, and game canon, providing the entry has 200+ comments on it.

● Submissions: If your character and/or your character's team has threaded something out to completion, or if you have added and solved a complication to the mission via player plot either on this log or elsewhere in the game, please use the "submit your solution" link above to submit that information so it can be added to the Progress Report.

● Reward: The reward for completion of this month's exploration mingle is that the amusement park will be open in June, with an amusement park prompt in the Prijata log.

phase i: electric rails

The main method of access to the new area of the city is via the electric rails of the SkyTram, which are currently powered by the generator and arc reactors placed in the area. A previous city-wide operation has provided some security to this line of access by placing temporary laser fences on either side of the rail, but the solution is just that - temporary. This phase is for characters to either help with moving the stronger inner wall to encompass the new area or who want to serve as protection for characters moving the wall.

While the inner wall is very solid and secure, unlike the outer wall it was created to be portable through use of construction equipment and drivers, and there are additional segments of wall in storage that can be added to make it longer. The drawback is that, while the wall is being moved, it is not providing security for the city. This means that, besides people who are willing to contribute their labor and expertise with the moving of the wall, people willing to defend the gap in the wall and the people moving the fence are more than welcome. The more the merrier!

phase ii: amusement perk: cleaning house

Once the inner wall has been moved to encompass the area including the generators, power relay station, and the amusement park and hot springs, it will be time to start reclaiming the area. This means a lot of hard work cleaning and clearing out foliage from the area, as well as fighters to rid the area of monsters in whatever way is necessary. This step will allow for the amusement park to be assessed at a more in-depth level for functionality, and brought back into working order.

phase iii: amusement perk: get this party started

The final phase of the operation is for tech and science teams to get the park and relay station operational and includes both characters able to provide technical or engineering abilities as well as construction crews to get the rides, games, and food stands operational. It also requires characters with electric or energy abilities and electrical engineers or other experts to completely stabilize the power grid and get all of the generators back online to power the area.

It will also require fighters and surveyors to scout the line and make any last minute notations of problem areas in the fence, and escort tech teams out to correct them before the area is safe to open to the public.

phase iv: wildcard

Have an idea for a mission-adjacent plot, or want to make up an unexpected plot twist or problem and solve it with your character? Just write up a starter, and don't forget to give yourself props by submitting it for the Progress Report.

[ But he likes her spirit. She reminds him--a little--of Clary. ]

"But, what if your taste is different than someone else's?" That was the confusing part. Because, really, Tieria didn't need a lot of heavy flavors and seasonings in his food. He had a sharp sense of taste that could be easily overwhelmed if someone overseasoned something.

[ Akira quite obviously back tracks then. Whatever he was going to say gets filed back into his mind and he shakes his head. ]

As okay as they are going to be.

[ Now isn't the time. They have a task at hand to focus on and... he isn't sure it is good to speak of any of it. Maybe another time.

Although, he knows, that now she'll quietly wait for him to talk about it. She's aware something is amiss in the Phantom Thief leader. He knows she won't let it rest for too long. ]

Well, that's somewhere to start.

[That, she figures, is open enough. Either he'll see fit to explain himself or he won't, but this isn't an interrogation and she's not about to corner him over something he doesn't want to divulge.

At least, not yet. Not to say she won't be keeping an eye on how he continues to adjust and perhaps revisit this if she feels she needs to. But short of being able to send him back to finish unfinished business, which is far beyond what she can do, there's really not much she can do save to leave the space for him to talk if he wants and to listen if and when he does.]

[ Akira nods simply to her statement and decides to keep it at that. Maybe they can talk about it somewhere else later. When its just the two of them and they don't need to worry about being overheard. Even if it's Akira worrying about the overhearing.

He turns his attention towards the buildings. His eyes narrow slightly. ]

Should we go exploring?

[ Maybe acting like a thief will help. ]

Now? There's still a lot to do here.

[And she definitely doesn't want to do too much exploration of the building they're in now. She won't even when it's up and running again, really.

On the other hand, maybe it'll help her feel a bit better to get out of the haunted house surroundings, and it wouldn't hurt, maybe, to start on a new section as well.]

But I guess a break wouldn't hurt. Where were you thinking of checking out?

Scouting the area out can't hurt.

[ There is a general direction he nods in. Which isn't entirely helpful, but, its better than nothing. ]

If that's what it takes to keep it from tryin' to get into the city, yeah. [Bucky would have his issues with the thought of killing a person, but killing monsters, beasts, predatory animals that want to prey on the city residents, that gives him much less of a moral headache. It's easier. It's part of why he's found it so good for him, to be part of the Perimeter Guard. Here, he can fight, here he can do good.

He isn't sure how much shit Steve is going to give him for this plan of action. His Steve wouldn't have an issue, would go along with him easily and even agree it was for the best, but he's learned enough from the other Barnes that they - and the Steves - are very different people.] It's better to be proactive with the shit that gets too close to the wall. They're always predators, and usually pretty big.

[Like... that thing that is coming out from the forest, footsteps thudding heavily on the ground. Bucky hits the button on the device on his wrist, and the hard-light shield flares to life.] It doesn't look too friendly. Careful of the back spines, they might be poisonous.

[Bucky shakes his head, stubbornly walking his own way to one of the beds. He sits on the edge of it, letting her take scissors to the ruins of his t-shirt. At least it's just standard-issue, he can get another one.]

Nothing too crazy. Got raked by some claws, but I think I need stitches. I don't feel strange or anythin', it probably wasn't poisonous. [He's no stranger to injuries, apparently, because he's taking this rather well, calm despite the blood still oozing hotly down his back. It's slowed, at least.] Might have a few bruised ribs too, but I don't think they're cracked. Doesn't hurt enough.

[It comes in handy at times like these, being able to pull it out of the metal housing built into his shoulder. It throws him off-balance, the thing is definitely heavy and he carries it around on that side all day every day, but he's quick to adjust.] Yeah, can you patch it up to working order? I can make sure these guys are finished off. [He's fought with one arm before. Maybe he's not at his best like this, but he can manage - he's the Winter Soldier.

He hands over the sparking piece of dead machinery; one of the fingers twitches sadly.] I feel a little disarmed right now. [Oh. Arm puns. That's how it's going to be.]

Next time I'll be sure to engrave an invitation for you. [He says wryly, surveying the damage. One chimera twitches weakly beneath the other two dead ones, paw flexing in the dirt as it tests the weight. They're incredibly heavy for what they are, though, and that one isn't going anywhere for the moment. Not without a hell of a lot of struggling.

Bucky rolls his shoulders, rotating the left one in the socket to make sure it isn't too damaged. Seems to be in working order still. He's keeping alert in case the commotion brings anything else to the party, but for now, the only sounds are construction equipment, people shouting orders to each other, and the natural ambient noise of the Quarantine.]

It's a little bad. Mean to kick him while he's down. [Motioning to the third chimera.] So far so good moving this section of the wall. If nothing else too big comes to see what's going on, they should be ready to move on to the next section in an hour or so.

A can-do attitude won't stop that thing from gutting you on its claws. [Why are teenagers like this? Never mind that he was pretty much the same when he was around that age, always rushing into fights and trying to keep up with the adults, the super-powereds. He delivers a bone-crunching left-handed punch to the third chimera, then twists around to try and back himself closer to his new comrade. The chimeras are trying to regroup, backing off for the moment, prowling in a wide circle.]

You ever fired a gun before?

[Tony's expression goes downright pained, though whether it's at being blithely handed the tortured piece of machinery or the terrible pun is up for debate, and Bucky can't even see it anyway. The sigh he gives as he looks it over is a lot more obvious, even through the helmet.]

Think you can get me a little space to slip into something more comfortable?

[Of course he's going to fix it, that's not even a question. But he can't exactly do that in the armor.]

[ Dying visions kind of kill the flirtatious mood, Cassie. She glances at her expression, grinning in response. Stephanie Brown can never back down from any kind of challenge, especially from Cass. Unceremoniously, she reaches to sweep Cass off her feet, bridal style, with a soft grunt. ]

Dude, you even weigh less than me. It's not fair, you're like solid muscle.

[ Still, she manages it fairly easily. A champion all around. ]

We might. [ She shrugs. ] I've never really given it much thought, but we have like, superheroes and shit. So it makes sense for us to have that sort of thing. Or, at least, some kind of it. I can suspend my disbelief that far, I guess.

And I like the movies, but only when they're too dumb to take seriously. 'Cause then, they're funny.

[ She grins, motioning to the flashlight. ]

Thanks! And nice to meet you!

[Cass slips an arm quickly over Steph's shoulder to brace herself, letting out a squeak as she's picked up. She smiles up at her, eyes wide, face flushed crimson as she pulls her arm back.]

Jealous?

You're not gonna die. Not allowed, Drake. No more dead Bats. It's a goddamn rule.

[ She jabs him in the chest, able to at least momentarily recover from her shock. It's nice to joke with him again, even if she's not sure exactly what this older Tim must think of her. ]

But, yeah. It's just, I dunno. My mom wanted me to go to college, but I only ever just wanted to be a hero. So I get it, yanno?

If I acted like I was some badass, people would overestimate me. Or, like, estimate me. It's easier when you keep things light!

[ She grins. ]

And then the baddies don't see it coming when you kick their asses.

[ She watches, thrilled, as he punches that thing super hard. Steph wonders if Bruce could punch that hard, or if this dude is enhanced in some way. It's not out of the question - sometimes, Gotham feels like the only place without capes that have superpowers. ]

Uh, no. Nope. I've held one, but -

[ But then she didn't fire it, because of what Bruce had taught her. And then she'd died. Because of that hesitation. ]

But, uh. I could try?

I mean, kind of. You're ripped.

[ And super pretty. And Steph's gotta be a little jealous, because otherwise her face wouldn't get hot at her holding Cass like this. ]

Wouldn't anyone be? You're amazing.

You're amazing.

[Cass looks very solemnly up at her for a couple of seconds, cheeks still bright red, before sticking her tongue out.

Y'know Steph if you were just trying to make a point you could have put her down by now.]

[Shuri nods her head in a quick decisive motion.]

That's what happened with the Avengers too. They were real and then toys were made of them. [Something that she never let her older brother completely live down. She's waiting for the Black Panther action figure so she can give it to T'challa as a present.]

What are Gundam's specific function? Are they used for war?

[It's the common theme that Shuri has gathered from most places. Their weapons are far superior to their defenses and that makes them weak. She would have never let Wakanda's weapons advance to a point where they couldn't defend against them, it was common sense.]

If you're a badass you don't need to catch the baddies by surprise to kick their ass.

[ The grin gets an amused chuckle out of Jace. ]

It may be easier, but it's not as much fun.

[Yeah, he hears that sigh, but he's used to Tony sighing over him or Steve managing to wreck some sophisticated piece of machinery in battle by now. He always comes through to fix it back up again, whatever it is. Honestly they put this man through hell and he still puts up with them.]

I always got your back. [It comes out like a wry joke, but there's a sincerity there too, an honesty. He would never leave Tony open and unprotected in the field.

One of the chimeras is moving again, struggling to its feet, and Bucky whips out a hunting knife in his remaining hand, slipping into a fighting stance and facing it head-on.] I got this.

My hero.

[It's dry, sure, but there's a matching undercurrent of something like sincerity. It's nice to know that there's someone looking out for him, what can he say.

He takes a couple steps away to put his back against the nearest tree, trying to at least give himself some cover that's not just a guy with a knife. Not that he doesn't trust Bucky to handle these things, but he'd also like not to get jumped while he's busy.]

Try not to wreck the other arm, I can't fix that one.

[That one comes out in his normal voice as he steps out of the armor and sets it to guard. Just one more precaution.]
