[ Jim's been in the Quarantine for a year now. Plenty of time to make connections, and establish a solid circle of friends that he cares for, trusts and relies on.

Granted, nothing's perfect. Plenty of people have come and gone. A number of names come to mind, too many people who left that he misses dearly. But the people he has here now, he cherishes them immensely. They're important to him, and some of them he'd almost consider family.

And Victor has mentioned more than once that he'd like to meet his friends. Jim's not keeping their relationship secret by any means, and after a month of going steady, he knows for sure how important Victor is to him, and that he'll be an important part of his life for as long as they're both in the Quarantine. So, it seems like the perfect time to set up a little get-together and invite his friends so he can introduce them to Victor.

Finding a place is a little tricky at first, because his loft is still inaccessible due to the flood, and it's not like he's gonna ask Victor to do it at his place. Beverly offers the perfect suggestion, though, and so Jim sets up one of the holosuites with his Enterprise program. Once arriving at the holosuites downtown and stepping inside, everyone will get to walk through a few of the various corridors of his ship, but the simulation is still fairly limited, and there's only so many areas one can visit. The small party itself is happening on the bridge, which would likely be the most inadequate location if this happened to be the real Enterprise. Seen as it isn't, though, no harm done.

There are a few snacks and sweets for people to help themselves to, plenty of drinks to go around (alcoholic and otherwise), and Jim has gone with a selection of old pop and rock music to be playing quietly in the background. It's not much, but it's really a very informal thing. His main purpose here —and he'll be going around the party making sure it happens— is to introduce Victor to his friends. ]

[he knows they were only teasing (flirting?) but her question does give him genuine pause.]

I never imagined making it to that point. [immediate moodkill.] But I am not sure I would have wanted to rank up that high. [but now it's better??] Especially now.

[he likes being out of the war. with jyn, specifically, but out of the war is part of that.]

No, I don't think it'd suit you.

[ if something dangerous was afoot she doesn't think cassian would want to delegate, he'd want to do it himself because she doesn't need to have known him for her whole life to know they're the same kind of self-sacrificing like that. ]

The title, yeah, but not the actual job.

[he sort of smiles. called out!! but in a nice way.]

Some generals do stay in the field. [he has a hard enough time commanding people already under the captain rank, especially when it's something that could lead to their deaths. being a general sometimes feels like it would have really killed him, if he wasn't already dead.] But I don't think I want to turn into a Draven.

[realists]

[ jyn's mouth settles into something thoughtful, nearly somber. they don't often talk about the emotional toll of their lives, but they don't need to, it's apparent in their nightmares and paranoia, their shoved down grief and inability to function like normal human beings at times.

cassian would have made a great general, made the hard choices that mon mothma and bail organa were too idealistic to make. just because she hates draven's decision regarding her father doesn't mean she doesn't understand it was the right decision at the time. ]

You've hollowed out enough of yourself.

[he knows draven probably would have liked him to succeed him one day. if he hadn't met jyn and the others, maybe he would have. but even if he did survive, knowing them and knowing that slim chance to have a life outside of war, he doesn't think he'd want it.]

[jyn's comment is very sombering. he is hollow. he lost pieces of himself with each murder, each mission.]

I am trying to fill it all back up.

Me too.

[ breathing out a heavy sigh, jyn unfolds from the captain's seat, stretching up languidly like a cat, as they didn't just admit they were broken shells of human beings. her arms lift over her head and it must look to anyone nearby that they were just having a casual chat (or flirtation, probably, in jim's opinion.)

she circles around the chair to come up next to cassian. ]

Come on, let's get some fresh air and forget to come back.

[at least it's a very familiar shift, moving on from one subject to another. it's fine by him, he has nothing more to say.]

[he shoots her the tiniest grin at her suggestion.]

Jim is probably expecting it. It's his party, we shouldn't let him down.

[realists]

I would never, [ jyn says with mock solemnity, sneaking her fingers through cassian's and giving his hand the tiniest squeeze before she leads them out of the party.

jim was definitely expecting it so she doesn't feel bad in the slightest. jyn erso is the queen of the irish goodbye. ]
