When Val disappeared after going to investigate the portal, Ed has his theories about what that meant. She wouldn't have gone home without saying goodbye, and she wouldn't have left to go anywhere else without telling him, and there was only one way to go through that portal by accident. Whether she left intentionally or not wasn't the issue, the issue was that she had left without notice and that meant that he had to deal with that reality in the here and now.
Which, for Ed, meant needing some time alone to think. He would have followed after her if he thought the portal would lead him to where she went, but he knew it wasn't as easy as that. If the direction of the portal had changed since she disappeared by the time he got to it, there was nothing to gain by going through. Still, he knew the only way he was going to get a break from everyone was by going away for awhile.
So, that's what he did. Packed up, said his goodbyes to everyone as if he was actually leaving and disappeared the only way he could while still trapped on this moon. By disconnecting his device and hiding out beyond the wall. There were a few places he'd stop during his time absent from living within the city limits, if someone really wanted to find him they probably could. Alternately, if someone was the type to wander around outside of the wall they could also bump into him by chance either when he's not hiding out in a building or by exploring the building he happens to be hiding out in.
By the time the monthly holiday had begun Ed had already disappeared, but it wasn't hard to follow along with what was going on in the city. Does this bring me joy? was hardly a concept he wanted to think about at this point, which only made it all the more appropriate that he wasn't around to deal with things when this tradition occurred. Of course, he couldn't stay away forever, there were obligations to take care of for one thing, he just needed time to clear his head and work out what to do moving forward. If there was one thing Ed was a firm believer in, it was doing what had to be done to keep going.
So, after about a week of solitude, one Edward Elric was back on the roster with a new username, lacking the memories of someone that had been there all along.

Ed doesn't realize her lack of upset is from not really considering animals as the feeling creatures that they were. He wouldn't have been much different, considering most of his own were strays he'd taken in out of obligation to his friends. "Haven't heard of a Phantump-" but he knows what Pokemon are, so he tilts his head curiously as she continues speaking. "Ghost type, huh? Do you think there might be one in the cemetery out back?" He'd be willing to look into it with her, especially considering she does seem oblivious to the dangers of being out here.
After a moment he turns to start digging through his bag of belongings. "I have some treats that might help catch one, I got my Pokemon that way." Not intentionally, but the Vulpix just wouldn't quit. "Do you have a ball or ... just hoping to get on its good side?"

She does notice the tone, though, and doesn't pursue the topic much further. Pokemon are, after all, much more important. Her eyes light up when he mentions his own Pokemon, and she searches through her bag again for a pokeball. "I bought a few before coming out, in case I did run across one. But as it stands I don't have anything to battle it with, so I was really just hoping it would like to make a friend."
Which might seem silly, but her logic carries in her mind. She has ghost-like powers, surely she can befriend a ghost creature.
"Are your Pokemon with you? Perhaps I could borrow one while we're hunting."
no subject
He watches her go through the bag curiously, smiling faintly at her words. "Where I was before here Pokemon were just like every other stray animal. Sometimes they'd just pick a person and tag along, but you could almost always get one with enough food." Making a friend was hardly a weird concept to him, with how he'd gotten two of his own Pokemon. He does offer her some of the treats then, it seemed like the best bet.
"Sure do. I keep them on me all the time." Give him a moment to shuffle his own belongings around once more, before pulling out the balls in his possession. "They might be able to locate another Pokemon easy for you, but I don't know how good they'd be in a fight." They sparred and played on their own but he didn't battle them if he could avoid it. "I don't know much about the fighting if I'm being honest, my knowledge is pretty limited." Letha might know a lot more than him on several topics. "The only reason I know anything is from a Milotic adopting me a few years ago. I've heard they're rare from a few people native to that world, but that doesn't really mean all that much to me." Maybe she'd know what a Milotic was, she'd probably fare better with that one anyway considering it wasn't a fire type and it definitely had some previous experience.
