When Val disappeared after going to investigate the portal, Ed has his theories about what that meant. She wouldn't have gone home without saying goodbye, and she wouldn't have left to go anywhere else without telling him, and there was only one way to go through that portal by accident. Whether she left intentionally or not wasn't the issue, the issue was that she had left without notice and that meant that he had to deal with that reality in the here and now.
Which, for Ed, meant needing some time alone to think. He would have followed after her if he thought the portal would lead him to where she went, but he knew it wasn't as easy as that. If the direction of the portal had changed since she disappeared by the time he got to it, there was nothing to gain by going through. Still, he knew the only way he was going to get a break from everyone was by going away for awhile.
So, that's what he did. Packed up, said his goodbyes to everyone as if he was actually leaving and disappeared the only way he could while still trapped on this moon. By disconnecting his device and hiding out beyond the wall. There were a few places he'd stop during his time absent from living within the city limits, if someone really wanted to find him they probably could. Alternately, if someone was the type to wander around outside of the wall they could also bump into him by chance either when he's not hiding out in a building or by exploring the building he happens to be hiding out in.
By the time the monthly holiday had begun Ed had already disappeared, but it wasn't hard to follow along with what was going on in the city. Does this bring me joy? was hardly a concept he wanted to think about at this point, which only made it all the more appropriate that he wasn't around to deal with things when this tradition occurred. Of course, he couldn't stay away forever, there were obligations to take care of for one thing, he just needed time to clear his head and work out what to do moving forward. If there was one thing Ed was a firm believer in, it was doing what had to be done to keep going.
So, after about a week of solitude, one Edward Elric was back on the roster with a new username, lacking the memories of someone that had been there all along.

"Hi Ed." He landed a couple feet in front of him. "I wasn't sure if you were still around here. It's good to see you." It was odd for Link to see him alone. During his last time in Riverview Ed, while not necessarily a people-person, had been the one to organize search groups for exploration beyond the wall. Then again, everyone needed time to themselves every once in a while.
"What are you up to?"
no subject
"Would you believe 'taking a vacation'? I just needed a break for awhile... I didn't tell anyone where I was going, so-" If he could kind of keep that quiet, it'd be great. "What about you? It's good to see you again, how long have you been back?"
He might have been too caught up in his own personal drama to notice.
no subject
"Yes, actually." Don't worry Ed, he's got your back. "I've only been back for a couple weeks myself, though I was told a few months had gone by here." The weather certainly seemed to support that fact if he had been in any doubt about how much time had passed in Riverview.
"I'm sorry if I bothered you out here."
no subject
"You're no bother, I just like to come out here to think sometimes. It's quiet... peaceful." Kind of like how he used to describe his hometown to people back in Amestris.

Link tilted his head when he looked back at Ed. There was something a little different about his physical appearance from the last time Link had seen him. "Did something happen while I was gone? You look a little different from the last time I saw you."
no subject
He squinted slightly at the question, for a moment debating telling Link he was imagining the difference. After all the way he appeared now wouldn't last until the next time Link saw him, so he'd only have to explain it a second time. It only takes a moment before he gives up on that idea, though.
"Do you know anything about the memory canisters? They can give us memories of our future as if we've already lived it. They can erase memories, too. When you use one your physical appearance changes to match however you turn out in that memory. So if you age a few years you come out looking older. I had one done a few months ago, I actually look younger but that's part of all this multi-verse travel I've been doing since I was a kid."

He tilted his head in focus as he listened to Ed's explanation. "I might have heard something about them before, but I never really looked into it." It was an interesting concept, and it sounded easier than what he was doing in Hyrule to regain his memories. "I see," he murmured after Ed finished his explanation. Now that he knew what they were, he'd have to investigate it further.
"Since we're here, do you want something to eat?" Granted, there were no open restaurants beyond the wall, but Link always came prepared when it came to food.
no subject
"You brought food with you?" It wasn't surprising, if someone thought they might be a few days or just to have emergency rations. "I don't want to use what you need, I do have my own nearby."
no subject
"Of course." When didn't he have food on him? Even when he was on the other side of the wall, he would usually carry something on him to munch on while he walked or shopped or reported in to the Perimeter Guard. He shrugged. "I've got plenty, but I won't complain if you'd rather eat your own food." He pulls out a stick wrapped with aluminum foil and rips the wrapping off, revealing a meat and mushroom shishkabob and promptly tears into it.
"Do you know how long you're gonna stay out here," he asks after swallowing.
