[OPEN] let the wind carry us
who: Hiccup and YOU
what: Bugs, surveyor stuff, and daily life. If you want to do something specific, hit me up at
nekky!
when: Late Jan. through Feb.
where: Around Riverview
warnings: None so far.
[i. Beetles Attack]
[Giant beetles. Sure, no problem, why not. They're on a rampage toward the city, and that's dangerous, but nothing that can't be handled, right? Unlike others, though, Hiccup is not keen on resorting to lethal methods. They're creatures looking out for their own survival, just like anything. Even dangerous dragons back home could be relocated, rehomed, settled somewhere to live in their natural environment.
Hiccup is up in the air on Toothless, trying to steer one of the beetles off-course. The dragon's huge wings flap in the beetle's face area, and he darts away with impressive agility before he can be caught in snapping pincers. From there, Toothless fires off a few blasts of purple fire, leaving smoking spots on the ground, trying to deter it. Sure enough, the beetle does turn somewhat to the left. A success.
Until it suddenly rears back, and catches dragon and rider by surprise. Toothless roars in alarm and Hiccup shouts as the horn rakes across the night fury's body and tears off the prosthetic tail fin, sending them both veering toward the ground.] No, no, no-!
[ii. Even Action Heroes Go to School]
[It's a little sunnier today, slightly warmer than it's been, but the cold has never bothered Hiccup much. It's winter 9 months of the year on Berk, after all - he's used to it. He's found a nice patch of grass in a courtyard area just outside the communal housing building; being cooped up at his desk was not resulting in work being done.
Toothless is curled on the grass, dozing pleasantly in a sunbeam, and Hiccup has fitted himself into the C of the reptile's sleeping body, leaning against one tucked-in wing, looking much more casual today. He's adopted some of the local style, wearing jeans with one of the legs rolled up so as not to get caught in the metal workings of his prosthetic, a sage green hoodie, and a thrift-store sneaker.
There are books and papers spread out all around him - remedial biology, basic engineering, catch-up math, beginner chemistry, and some spiral notebooks that seem to be filled with sketches and notes.] Imaginary numbers... Are we sure they didn't make this stuff up? [He muses to Toothless, who just mrrs in response without opening his eyes.
And then the wind blows one of his papers out of his hand, and he gets up to scramble after it. Maybe help him catch it?] No no no, hey, wait, I need that!
[iii. Dragon Ate My Homework]
[You can't take a dragon to class, not even at university. So, when Hiccup attends, he has to leave Toothless on his own for a few hours. Of course, the dragon is quite smart, and capable of meeting his rider at a certain time of day, so in the mean time, he wanders. On the ground, one might notice, never quite taking to the air when he's alone.
Maybe you find him pouncing on beams of light outside the communal housing building, or possibly he's downtown, sitting back on his haunches and intently watching a fish vendor, tongue flicking out a few times with interest. Hiccup will come to find him at some point, but for now, Toothless is having his own day out on the town.]

After a moment, though, his ears cock up, and he tilts his head, turning to look at the person talking to him directly. He's not exactly fluent in human, but he does recognize the word 'fish', and his tongue flicks out a few times. Looks from her, to the fish vendor. Maybe she will give him a fish!]
no subject
Come on. Go get it. Cause some mayhem.
[She has no idea if the puppy-like dragon will be able to understand her so she gestures towards the fish, hoping that he gets the idea that he can bounce over there and grab it.]
Don't you want to eat?
no subject
If a human says it's okay it's fine, right? Clearly.]
no subject
Willa waves a hand towards him as she creeps near the lock box that she's seen the traders put their cash in. She just needs Toothless to cause a ruckus and she can swipe the box and make her getaway.
It's a very good impromptu plan and even if she gets caught she can drop the bock and disappear into the dense afternoon crowd.]
no subject
Toothless tilts his head, slurping up half a fish, rumbling out an inquisitive noise. Why you upset, human fish man. Ruckus accomplished, apparently.]
no subject
She stands for a few minutes and watches the scene with an amused smile before slowly working her way towards the edge of the crowd. She doubts that the dragon needs back up.]
no subject
Luckily, or maybe unluckily, Hiccup is out of class by now, and can be heard calling over the crowd,] Toothless? Where are you going, bud?
no subject
Willa gets part way through the crowd when Toothless comes up behind her. The money is stashed safely away and there is nothing linking her to the thief except that this dragon is trying to follow her through the crowd. When she realizes that she is the dragon's target she pauses, turns towards Toothless and holds up her palm.]
I do not have food.
[Just to make that clear.]
no subject
Evidently, he understands 'I don't have food', because... he starts to hork up half a fish covered in slobber, and drops it at her feet, rumbling out a happy noise. Look, he'll share his food!
Hiccup catches up by then and takes in the sight with a raised eyebrow.]
Uh. Hey, what's going on here?
no subject
[Willa's nose scrunches up as the fish is regurgitated at her feet. That is not what she wants and she has no idea how to tell this dragon that. She really hopes he doesn't eat that again.]
I don't even know anymore.
[She doesn't know a lot about dragons.]
I don't want that.
[Willa points down at the fish looking very put out by the sight. It's going to be awhile before she eats fish again.]
no subject
Hiccup rolls his eyes at the sight, and frankly has to suppress a shudder. He's been in that position and actually had to take a bite before, so. Finally, he stoops down and picks up the half a fish, offering it back to the dragon, who rumbles out a little roar and eats it delicately from his hand. Enjoy never eating fish again.]
She's not into the regurgitated fish, I think, sorry, bud. [He wipes his hand on his jeans and offers her a sheepish smile.] Sorry, is he bothering you? Normally he's with me, but I can't take him to class...
no subject
Not bothering but ew... [She is never eating fish again.] Maybe sign him up for day care? I'd say something pet related but he's more like a toddler than he is a pet.
[Willa's gaze flicks over to Hiccup. He looks like he could be a little older than her but it's hard to tell.]
What class? Like school?
no subject
At the University. I'm taking chemistry and biology and engineering and math, to get caught up to where I would be if we had schools like this back home.
no subject
Ah.
Fun.
[Willa doesn't like school. She has a GED and that's enough.]
no subject
He's... not really like a dog. Or a horse. It's a lot harder to take care of a dragon than either of those animals. [Dogs and horses don't breathe fire. Fortunately.]
It is fun, actually! I've learned a lot of cool stuff.
no subject
Right. [She looks over towards the dock and it looks like there is more shouting.]
If you want to keep talking we should walk. It looks like things haven't calmed down and I was looking to get something... not fish- [She points at toothless.] -to eat.
You're welcome to tag along if you want.

[Toothless might be an accessory to theft. Luckily, no one will find out about it since he's such a cute dragon.]
no subject
With raised eyebrows, he looks to Toothless for an answer, but the dragon just cocks his head to the side.]
Well, I should. Probably go, you know, pay for the fish he ate. [Squint.] Honestly, Toothless, you know better.
no subject
I'll see you around.
