Popular people create trends— everyone wants to be with them, or to be like them. But they're sort of... fake, you know? There's not a lot of honesty in those cliques, not a lot of real friendships. In my time it's not so bad anymore, society as a whole mostly grew out of that. But this movie is from a couple centuries before then, so... things were very different.
Anyway, this is just mocking that kind of environment. Comedy used as a means of criticism. It's funny because it's... well, honestly, completely ridiculous. [ He shrugs at her. ] Makes sense?
