I was going as part of the Blades. You weren't thrilled about it, either. [Keith really didn't want to get into that argument again.] It started with just training, but they needed my help on a few things, and... well... it started to become a regular thing.

And Voltron was doing stuff. There were things going on all over with the effort. I guess it got to be too much. I couldn't balance them. So, when the Black Lion took you back, I decided to go with the Blades instead of making everyone try to switch Lions again. The Black Lion is supposed to be yours. It's better that way.

[Shiro sits quietly as he absorbs that information. Keith had basically given up on Voltron? Because he didn't want to make them switch lions? That sounded... he knew Keith. It sounded like he'd basically left the team because he'd be left out. Red had gone to Lance and Black had left him for Shiro.

But then he... "you weren't thrilled about it, either." No, he wasn't happy with the fact that this was happening just because he was gone, but something felt... weird with that statement]

No matter what happens with the lions you are always a part of the team, Keith. I hope you know that.

You are right though, I'm not thrilled about the idea, Keith. I know the Blade accepted you and they were our allies, but you almost died during the trial. The only reason it stopped was because Red tried to destroy their base.

[Knowledge or death was the way of the Blades, like victory or death was the way of Galra.

But Shiro's concern was for Keith's safety, not that it was disrupting the team]

[Shiro hit the nail on the head with that first statement. Keith sniffed sharply and then looked away, taking in a deep breath and letting it out slowly. He didn't feel much like he was, but at least he was still doing something... something to help with defeating Zarkon and Lotor, and all of it. It was better than wallowing around wondering what to do with himself without a Lion.

But the next part... Shiro wasn't wrong. The Trials had been tough, physically, mentally, emotionally, and Keith really had gone through the wringer to get through it all. He knew that. And he still didn't have all the answers.]

I had to get my answers, Shiro. [He stood by his decision to do it, regardless. No regrets.] Maybe now... maybe I can find more.

[Shiro watched as Keith looked away from him at the comment about him still being a part of the team. It hurt. Keith didn't feel like he was anymore. That's why he had gone; based on what Keith had said, he felt like he didn't belong. Keith was his teammate, his friend, and his brother and he no longer felt like he belonged.

There was only a moment of hesitation then Shiro closed the distance between them and wrapped his arms around Keith, giving him a hug]

[Keith's eyes widened for a second in surprise, but then leaned into the hug. He squeezed his eyes shut against the sting. Ow... ow ow ow... this was a lot to deal with in a short time, and he just... he couldn't help it. He clung tightly to Shiro. This hug meant a lot more than the one before he'd left the Castle. He didn't know how to interpret how things had gone while he had been the pilot of the Black Lion after Shiro got back... before it took him back. But, now? This right here... this was the hug he'd been looking for.]

[Shiro held tight to Keith as well, letting the younger paladin hug him for as long as he needed to. He had no answers for Keith about why things had gone the way that they had back home. He no longer had the same memories that Keith did. But he would be there to try and help or just offer support if that was all he could. He hated not having the answers, but if he didn't...]

You'll always be a teammate no matter what happens.

[Keith sniffed sharply, burying his face against Shiro's shoulder.]

I... thanks.

[He hoped that was the case. It didn't feel much like it right now, but he really hoped that was the case, that he could come back some day, but... right now? This had felt like the right thing to do.]

[Shiro kept his arm around Keith, not going to be the one to move back first at the moment. He wanted Keith to know everything was okay with them]

Look, you just got those memories. This is all probably new and confusing. Why don't we talk about it more later, after you've had a chance to process everything?

[He was confused too and wanted to help, but maybe him pushing Keith to tell him things was making it worse so soon after it happened]

[He nodded.]

Yeah. It's a lot.

[He was definitely okay with putting this off, and getting his head back on straight. He felt like stuff was a little mixed up, and maybe that's why he couldn't explain things clearly enough.]

[Shiro nodded, glad that Keith agreed. He really did want to know everything that had happened, but it sounded like things hadnt't been easy for Keith so he wanted to let him adjust to this]

Do you want to do something else in the mean time? A distraction?

[Keith considered that for a moment, and then looked at Shiro.]

Like what?

Well… video games. We could go out and jog or spar. Something like that. If you want to.

[If Keith said no, that was the end of it, but he wanted to offer. This was hard for him and he wasn't even the one who had gotten the memories. It had to be so much worse for Keith, who had actually received them]

[He considered it for a moment, and then nodded.]

Yeah... that's probably a good idea. [The options actually all sounded pretty tempting, but he was in the mood for something more physical than video games. He got up.] I could use something to blow off some steam... if you don't mind sparring a bit...

[He knew Keith. When Keith was stressed, he moved. Sitting and stewing drove him crazy so the offer to spar would help work out some of that stress and make him feel better. Also an additional side effect: if he was stressed about things going on with Shiro - which it kind of sounded like he was - it gave him the excuse to beat up on Shiro for a bit]

I don't mind sparring.

[Keith nodded a little, not even thinking about the fact that his fighting had evolved with the Blade training he'd been granted the memories of.]

Okay.

[They had the space for some practice fighting in the house, so it would be easy to just move a few things to the side and get set up for a session. Once that was done, he stretched his arms and legs a bit before giving Shiro a nod that he was ready.]

[Since bringing up the Blade of Marmora, Shiro suspected that Keith's fighting style had changed. They definitely were a far more physical group, more violent. He was curious to see the changes.

So Shiro helped move the furniture to one side to give them enough space to spare. He stretched, taking off the shirt he was wearing over his undershirt. If they were going to spar, let's at least do this properly]

When you're ready.

[Giving Keith the go ahead to make the first move.

Now all they needed was one of the lions saying "round one fight". Never mind... that would be weird]

[Keith took a breath and let it out before charging in. He was just as aggressive as before, and still used his legs a lot with kicks and attempts to trip his opponent. It came in handy against people larger than him, which Shiro was. But he had more spins and more agility, if that was possible, and he seemed faster than before, too.]

[Shiro was expecting a change, but he wasn't sure how much of a change he was expecting. That was definitely a change. Keith was significantly faster than he had been before he was definitely using some of the techniques that he had witnessed the Blades using when he had first fought them. Yes, he had been training with the Blades.

So it did make it trickier for Shiro, but it was still enough of Keith's fighting style that he wasn't thrown completely off, still sparring with Keith]

[Keith's style had always been a little more aggressive and somewhat faster than most people, which no one had really paid much attention to before, but working with the Blades had enhanced that part of it, showing that there had always been hints to his alien heritage... that and his strange feelings and sharp instincts that were usually right. While alone, they didn't speak of much, especially when there was no physical traits that showed that side of him, but with continued interactions, Keith was finding it surprisingly easy to develop those traits and use them more to his advantage.

The fighting style and techniques had been the easiest. The rest was still something to work on.

He had gotten stronger, too, able to take a hit better and recover faster, keeping himself in the fight longer. His endurance was higher, too, and he really wasn't getting winded. At the same time, he was still holding back a little. He might have been frustrated, and part of that might have been directed at Shiro, but this was still Shiro Keith was fighting against, and he didn't want to hurt him or fight too strongly.

It was just a spar...]

[Keith was more of challenge for Shiro now, not only because of the new style, but also because he had clearly improved in the time that he had been training with Blades. Which was weird because he hadn't gone anywhere...

Keith was able to take Shiro off guard a few times when he tried a new move, but Shiro wasn't going to give in just because Keith was trying something new. He was holding his own against the young man's assault. Once he started to get into Keith's new fighting style, he started to improve as well.

He managed grab Keith's arm. He wasn't going to throw or flip him when they didn't have a mat, but was going to try and pin Keith]

[Shiro didn't survive in the arena by pure luck alone, and the fact that he was able to adapt to Keith's changes, even if they'd been pretty much instantaneous with that canister, showed why. Keith grunted, his arm tense against Shiro's hold for just a second before he went loose, letting Shiro grapple him for a moment, and moving with the change in momentum to reverse the hold, grabbing Shiro from behind.]

[Shiro felt Keith let himself go limp, making it easier to grapple him until Keith turned the table and reversed the hold. He could have easily flipped Keith over his head from that position, but the lack of mat from his current position could hurt if Keith landed wrong. So Shiro paused, waiting a moment to see if Keith would let his guard down]

You've learned some new stuff.

[The comment caught Keith off guard, and he pulled back, releasing the hold and stepping away for a moment.]

Uh... I guess I have.

[It was weird. Part of him wasn't sure where the newer moves were coming from, and the other part was used to him doing them already.]

[Well now Shiro was taken aback by suddenly releasing his arm and stepping back. He turned to face Keith when he did]

There’s not really anything wrong with that. I was just surprised. I wouldn’t have thought something like that would happen so quickly.

[Consider he had literally been there only moments before and hadn’t know how to do this]

[Keith looked at Shiro for a moment, and then nodded, dropping his gaze to the floor.]

It's weird, I guess. I mean, like... I know I've been fighting that way for a while, but I also know that it's something new that I didn't know how to do this morning.

[He also didn't seem as winded as he might have been before, either... like his endurance was higher.]
