Hmmm... Don't remember. I think it has something to do with the old alphabet being, like, too complicated. People tried to simplify kanji, but then the old alphabet was still used sometimes. [he rubs his chin in thought] And then katakana is for foreign words, or, like, sound effects. It can be pretty weird if you're tryin' t'learn it, I guess!
