hygge

In the days leading up to December 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Hygge. This holiday is one of Riverview Quarantine's four yearly celebrations of love, this one focused on familial love and found family. The traditions associated with Hygge involve coziness and warmth with loved ones, as snow begins to blanket the Quarantine. Meals comprised of family favorites are shared together most nights of the month of December, and families both biological and found gather together by outdoor fires to drink hot cocoa and other warm drinks, roast marshmallows, and enjoy the beauty of the short-lived winter season on the moon, especially at night, when both the stars and almost unreal aurora borealis light the night sky.

a celebration of familial love and found family

Winter comes to the moon very quickly every year, as the orbit of the Capitol World crosses between its moon and the sun - the temperature drops to just below freezing in the span of only a couple of days, and the trees often don't even change from green to orange. During this short winter, the celebration of Hygge keeps all the residents warm. The main traditions involve comfort and warmth with those people you think of as family - platonic or romantic, though preferably mixed between the two - groups of people gather together to share meals and exchange gifts. The city sets up a series of cabins, each fronted with a fire pit, along the banks of the river, which has been lined with floating logs to interrupt the rushing water and allow the surface to freeze solid and form a series of skating rinks for the public to enjoy. Throughout the month, anyone can head down to the riverbank to make taffy candy in troughs of cold snow and share the various flavors with other families, or toboggan along winding, circuitous courses that range from easygoing to high-speed for the adrenaline junkies. The Town Square has a large, intricate ice sculpture set up, this year in the theme of a castle, that once entered proves to be a maze with a prize at the center for anyone who happens to make it through.

i. beach treats

The cabins that are set up all along both banks of the river are small and cozy, big enough to provide a comfortable lounging area with piles of pillows in front of a small fireplace where gift exchanges can happen, a kitchen to cook in, and a table for groups of people to share a meal at. Much like hotel rooms but without a fee, they're intended to be claimed at the start of the day and used for a while before being tidied and reset for the next group. Each cabin has a fire pit out front where a fire can be set up so groups of people can cook marshmallows for their hot chocolate and share stories or play music together.

Another major feature on the beach are the candy making areas, each big enough to accommodate a couple groups of people, featuring a bank of burners that keep various flavors of thick sugary syrup hot and ready. Once the syrup is at the right temperature, it can be drizzled into the snow packed in troughs to chill, and then rolled onto popsicle sticks to be eaten as a sweet chewy treat. Many families have their own particular flavor combos that are the go-to every year, and new families gather every year to start their own tradition.

ii. winter activities

After all that sugar, everyone's sure to be pepped up for a little activity! Every year, just before the big freeze, crews set up a grid of floating logs to calm the surface of the river along the banks, and when the temperature drops, those areas freeze into a thick layer of ice. As soon as they're safe to be skated on, booths pop up to fit residents with skates so they can skate around with loved ones, participate in ice dances, and play the ice skating version of almost any sport you can think of.

But skating isn't the only type of activity available! The sloping banks of the river have been set up with a variety of tobogganing courses, where people can share various types of sleds to slide down various set winding paths ranging from slow sloped ones to steeper, higher-speed ones that almost resemble bobsled courses.

Finally, for the more competitive, there is a less-gender-divided variation on a Lumberjack Competition, with various physical events that residents can compete in like sawing massive logs, logrolling, speed climbs, and boom runs.

iii. skygazing

After all that sugar and activity, lots of groups of family will settle down around fires either at the cabin or along the beach to enjoy a cup of spiked hot chocolate, coffee, or tea, and look up at the sky. Throughout the cold snap season in December, the sky is almost unnaturally clear and both the stars and the Capitol World are easy to see. Besides that, large swaths of the sky are bathed in beautiful aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, that paint large swaths of bright, beautiful color across the night sky. Curl up with a lover, a friend, a family member, or all of the above to keep warm and enjoy nature's fireworks show.

iv: ice maze

In the city center, residents can find a large, beautiful, intricately carved castle-themed ice sculpture. From the outside, it looks only about as big as a small house, but once residents enter they will find that the inside doesn't quite match the outside - courtesy of some of Gramarye Magic Research's top magic-users, the inside is massive, at least the size of a stadium. While cheery music plays, residents can traverse the complicated ice maze, each wall intricately carved and decorated with greenery, lights, and translucent watercolor paints. The walls are almost opaque, and the maze generally takes a couple of hours to get through for most residents.

Once they reach the center, they will find wrapped gifts arranged on a series of beautifully decorated tables, along with treats and warm drinks. The gifts are tailored to each individual in the maze, having been magically selected from a stockpile of items that have come through the portal, and consist of one small item from each character's home dimension (or, for CRAUs, from their previous game), similar to the "items from home" bonus reward, but without needing to spend points. The item should be small enough to fit in a shoebox, sentimental, and cannot be something intended for another person's character. Alternately, if there are no special items from home that a particular character would want or be attached to, an item of similar size and value that would make the character happy will be inside the box.

[ This little gathering is already less off-putting than the last one Finn wound up going to. No offense meant to Cisco or his boyfriend or any of their other guests last month, of course. Everyone was nice. He likes Cisco.

He primarily went there for Rey, though. It meant a lot to her to introduce them all. They both did a lot of staring at a festive centerpiece together.

This is a little more... his speed. Almost none of the people here are very good at this, they've all got the same basic understandings of home, and they make up a cabin of folks with relatively similar like. Political situations? They're all out of place together in a very specific way. Sort of like Poe was saying to him last time.

Anyway it helps that Jyn and Cassian show up and confirm "oh so it's definitely that guy I talked about lamps and guns with, that could be a lot Worse".

So Finn is hanging out with a cup of coffee, because if he's 100% on the level, a lot of sweet stuff isn't his style once he's tried it a couple of times, and hot chocolate is straddling a very fine tolerance line that he doesn't wanna jinx. (He will always continue to try sweet stuff, though, because Rey loves sweet stuff and likes being able to share it.) ]

We're glad you could make it. [ He takes a drink. ] Pretty sure Poe's lapped me on saying that a few times, but at least it's true.

[ Poe Dameron is the most sincere person he's ever met and sometimes it's positively wild existing in that orbit. ]

[there is no dressing up to poe's cabin party, which already makes it easier to motivate himself to go to than taako's. it's quieter here, and cassian likes it that way more too. there's something weirdly comforting at least in knowing they're all from the same... place. their understanding of the world is similar.]

[dryly:] He has. I have lost count.

[dragging poe is apparently becoming one of his new favorite things? maybe it's a sign poe is growing on him, but that's gross. he takes a sip of his own drink, a hot chocolate because he's growing very fond of it.]

[he looks at finn, far less suspiciously than he did originally.] Thanks.

[have one awkward, belatedly attempt at polite gratitude. it's really easy to fake that sort of thing, but cassian is trying to attempt this new thing called being a Real Human and Not A Spy. it's been going on for weeks and he's still stumbling, but it's hard to erase years.] Good to see you are settling.

[ What everyone in Poe's vicinity learns eventually is that dragging Poe is absolutely a sign that he's grown on them, and that it's super gross. But Finn is gonna let Cassian and Jyn figure that out in their own time, since Poe growing on people is all but a given.

He gives Cassian's thanks a nod. Finn doesn't have a lot of social expectations in stock, so it's mostly nice that Cassian threw all that out there at all. It gets a quick, genuine smile out of him. ]

Good to know I seem settled. [ He's been working on his Real Person and Not A Stormtrooper angles for a while. It's clearly paying off. ] It's-- okay around here. Too many holidays lined up after each other, but. It could be worse.

[ If the second shoe that inevitably drops on all these nice people and harmless events to make things worse is a death plague, and that's why this is a quarantine, he's personally quitting. ]

[it's the grossest. maybe if they ignore that feeling like they do every other feeling, nothing bad will happen. poe will just keep existing in their vicinity that's all.]

[cassian knows how to carry himself in a social setting, but it usually depends on the kind of setting. parties versus meetings versus business transactions, they all have different tones, and rarely had he attended them even as himself. there's no precedent for a cabin on the beach on some weird winter holiday with people from the future you're never going to witness. it'd be easier to wing it if cassian knew how to do that without complaining the whole time.]

Doesn't giving off the air of it keep people off your back at any rate? [wait no don't give finn any hints about his own inability to feel completely settled.] I have been here near four months and the endless celebrations still kind of feel like a distraction. But it is just... normal, apparently.

[normal is weird.]

Gets old meeting people by having them ask if you're okay.

[ So yeah, he gets that. Settling like adapting, he thinks he has a handle on. Learn where things are, learn how the tech works, learn how not to stand in a public space looking two steps from exploding. Settling like relaxing, genuinely, Finn knows he can't do. Maybe he's not the only one who can't. Same hat. ]

And I've heard normal is different everywhere. [ Does he know for sure? No. But it sounds accurate and it makes him think there's no point having the word exist. So it's probably right.

Finn leans in a little bit, conspiratorially. ]

Would've been nice to get quarantined somewhere with an easier normal.

That's why you ask them first and steer the conversation. [that's not even a neat spy trick, that's an "i hate talking about myself so lets not" trick.]

I could buy that. I am sure your normal and my normal are also quite different. [ex-stormtrooper?? ex-spy?? ok maybe their normals are similar enough in the wtf is a normal but the day to day was different! but inability to relax is definitely same hat.]

Finn also nearly laughs, just from not expecting the question. Like, he can't figure out if it's a joke or not and it's pretty much the last thing he expected. He doesn't laugh, but he can't help the flicker of a smile. ]

Have I tried jogging. [ His tone isn't demeaning. He's really interested in where this is going. ]

[something about their combined inability to figure out how to hold a real conversation and the lightness finn holds in himself despite of it lets cassian... relax a little. how odd!!!!]

[he doesn't quite smile back, but the lines in his face lessen, and he looks lighter. less like a child soldier all grown up and maybe almost a regular person.]

I go every morning. It's a normal I created that I can control.

[ he sees that, mister. maybe it's the simple effect of a stay-sharp holdover. maybe it's because he lives with rey, and that means daily practice in seeing just a little bit of light thread its way into a person once in a while, without them even realizing. ~~maybe it's maybelline.~~

but a little goes a long way, in finn's experience. it sits well. ]

If you started with that, you wouldn't have lost me. It makes sense.

[who are these people and why do they keep pulling almost-smiles and a sense of ease out of him?? it's not the same as jyn, but it's still a very new and very strange way to exist.]

[the lightness doesn't go away though, even with the realization that he feels at ease.]

Even I know you cannot just walk up to a person and suggest jogging. [HAPPY HOLIDAYS HAVE YOU RAN AROUND THE BLOCK??] But it is more than that. Once I figured out a basic sense of this place, I created a routine for myself around the constant factors. Even with all the celebrations, at least I know I can always go for a run.

[ Cassian didn't you just suggest it to him. Then again, it did also get explained right away. So like, that's fair enough.

Finn probably makes a mental note of this explanation and reasoning since it tracks really well.

It isn't about restriction, he thinks. It's about choice. Choosing your own normal. Choice is always something that has value. And he'd be lying if he said some of the routine of the Perimeter Guard's boot camp wasn't a help in getting adjusted. ]

Not a bad way to put it. [ What's he gonna do, judge how weird it sounds to be like "yes in spite of all the city-wide happy celebrations i find ways to manage"? He can't. he doesn't think it's weird to feel like that.

so he takes a sip of his coffee, then: ]

[they had a FEW sentences of conversation first! then comes the jogging suggestion!]

[choice is control for cassian. as long as he retains control of his situation, he feels safe, even in whatever constitutes his new normal. he has no say in the celebrations, but it's always his own choice to involve himself or to go for a goddamn run. when his back cooperates, of course.]

As long as you get enjoyment out of it, I would say it counts. [he's never had a real hobby before!! it's easy to say he runs for fun as a hobby than deal say he's dealing with a constant crisis of figuring out identity.] I am counting it.

[ I'm so proud of Cassian. I'm so proud of him having a hobby even if it's a camouflage mechanism for his constant identity crisis.

Finn is not proud exactly, technically. But he has a very definite moment of just like, being happy for him that he counts it. Hobbies are practically the definition of choosing your own normal. They're a whole person-ing category. He grins because he's a big loser, it's too late for him to become a cool guy. ]

[but finn is glad to hear it? how weird, someone else other than jyn being glad for him for trying to be a person. he even smiles about it and that's another bizarre thing. choose your own normal, believe it.]
