introductory mingle: HYGGE
what: Introductory Log and Hygge celebration
when: The month of December.
where: Anywhere around the city.
warnings: please put any necessary warnings in the subject lines

In the days leading up to December 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Hygge. This holiday is one of Riverview Quarantine's four yearly celebrations of love, this one focused on familial love and found family. The traditions associated with Hygge involve coziness and warmth with loved ones, as snow begins to blanket the Quarantine. Meals comprised of family favorites are shared together most nights of the month of December, and families both biological and found gather together by outdoor fires to drink hot cocoa and other warm drinks, roast marshmallows, and enjoy the beauty of the short-lived winter season on the moon, especially at night, when both the stars and almost unreal aurora borealis light the night sky.

Winter comes to the moon very quickly every year, as the orbit of the Capitol World crosses between its moon and the sun - the temperature drops to just below freezing in the span of only a couple of days, and the trees often don't even change from green to orange. During this short winter, the celebration of Hygge keeps all the residents warm. The main traditions involve comfort and warmth with those people you think of as family - platonic or romantic, though preferably mixed between the two - groups of people gather together to share meals and exchange gifts. The city sets up a series of cabins, each fronted with a fire pit, along the banks of the river, which has been lined with floating logs to interrupt the rushing water and allow the surface to freeze solid and form a series of skating rinks for the public to enjoy. Throughout the month, anyone can head down to the riverbank to make taffy candy in troughs of cold snow and share the various flavors with other families, or toboggan along winding, circuitous courses that range from easygoing to high-speed for the adrenaline junkies. The Town Square has a large, intricate ice sculpture set up, this year in the theme of a castle, that once entered proves to be a maze with a prize at the center for anyone who happens to make it through.
i. beach treats
The cabins that are set up all along both banks of the river are small and cozy, big enough to provide a comfortable lounging area with piles of pillows in front of a small fireplace where gift exchanges can happen, a kitchen to cook in, and a table for groups of people to share a meal at. Much like hotel rooms but without a fee, they're intended to be claimed at the start of the day and used for a while before being tidied and reset for the next group. Each cabin has a fire pit out front where a fire can be set up so groups of people can cook marshmallows for their hot chocolate and share stories or play music together.
Another major feature on the beach are the candy making areas, each big enough to accommodate a couple groups of people, featuring a bank of burners that keep various flavors of thick sugary syrup hot and ready. Once the syrup is at the right temperature, it can be drizzled into the snow packed in troughs to chill, and then rolled onto popsicle sticks to be eaten as a sweet chewy treat. Many families have their own particular flavor combos that are the go-to every year, and new families gather every year to start their own tradition.
ii. winter activities
After all that sugar, everyone's sure to be pepped up for a little activity! Every year, just before the big freeze, crews set up a grid of floating logs to calm the surface of the river along the banks, and when the temperature drops, those areas freeze into a thick layer of ice. As soon as they're safe to be skated on, booths pop up to fit residents with skates so they can skate around with loved ones, participate in ice dances, and play the ice skating version of almost any sport you can think of.
But skating isn't the only type of activity available! The sloping banks of the river have been set up with a variety of tobogganing courses, where people can share various types of sleds to slide down various set winding paths ranging from slow sloped ones to steeper, higher-speed ones that almost resemble bobsled courses.
Finally, for the more competitive, there is a less-gender-divided variation on a Lumberjack Competition, with various physical events that residents can compete in like sawing massive logs, logrolling, speed climbs, and boom runs.
iii. skygazing
After all that sugar and activity, lots of groups of family will settle down around fires either at the cabin or along the beach to enjoy a cup of spiked hot chocolate, coffee, or tea, and look up at the sky. Throughout the cold snap season in December, the sky is almost unnaturally clear and both the stars and the Capitol World are easy to see. Besides that, large swaths of the sky are bathed in beautiful aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, that paint large swaths of bright, beautiful color across the night sky. Curl up with a lover, a friend, a family member, or all of the above to keep warm and enjoy nature's fireworks show.
iv: ice maze
In the city center, residents can find a large, beautiful, intricately carved castle-themed ice sculpture. From the outside, it looks only about as big as a small house, but once residents enter they will find that the inside doesn't quite match the outside - courtesy of some of Gramarye Magic Research's top magic-users, the inside is massive, at least the size of a stadium. While cheery music plays, residents can traverse the complicated ice maze, each wall intricately carved and decorated with greenery, lights, and translucent watercolor paints. The walls are almost opaque, and the maze generally takes a couple of hours to get through for most residents.
Once they reach the center, they will find wrapped gifts arranged on a series of beautifully decorated tables, along with treats and warm drinks. The gifts are tailored to each individual in the maze, having been magically selected from a stockpile of items that have come through the portal, and consist of one small item from each character's home dimension (or, for CRAUs, from their previous game), similar to the "items from home" bonus reward, but without needing to spend points. The item should be small enough to fit in a shoebox, sentimental, and cannot be something intended for another person's character. Alternately, if there are no special items from home that a particular character would want or be attached to, an item of similar size and value that would make the character happy will be inside the box.
v. roommates or wildcard
Feel free to use this prompt to meet new roommates, for the purpose of getting to know each other, or hit up the mod-posted prompt to create a Communal Housing floor mingle. Or, if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set during the Hygge, feel free to write it up!

II and III
There is someone who catches her attention, someone all bundled up. Oh Cisco...]
Feeling cold? [She teases, throwing and then catching the snowball in her hands.] Did you have anything like this back home?
no subject
[ Cisco has absolutely no shame about the fact that he is wearing so many layers his arms are sticking out a little. He was not built for cold weather. It's not in his blood. No point in putting fashion
or dignityabove comfort. Besides. He thinks the hat and mittens look cute. ]Yeah, sometimes.
[ And then, making sure that Rey is looking at him before he does it, Cisco gathers up a snowball, grinning, and lobs it in Rey's direction. It misses her, hitting the ground and breaking apart, but the challenge behind it should be clear enough. Hopefully.
(He hasn't noticed that Rey doesn't have anything on her hands, yet - as soon as he does he will do something about that). ]
no subject
[She doesn't know what sort of climate he has! She lived in a desert planet that had little to no season changes. The temperatures ranged from hot, very hot, extremely hot, then cool, and cold. Nothing that could bring snow or anything like it. Rey isn't holding his wardrobe against him, but maybe he is over doing it a little? So many layers, won't he burn up?]
Define 'sometimes.' How often did it happen?
[Could he tell she was curious and excited about learning about this white powdery stuff? The same kind of stuff that isn't going to get them kill or have Kylo Ren pop up out of no where. She was still playing catch with herself when she saw that snowball thrown at her. It doesn't make contact...but she looks at Cisco with bewilderment.
Did he meant to--oh wait, looking around and seeing other people do it. Yes, he clearly meant to do that. The bewildered look changes to a sly smile as she throws her perfect snowball at him, hoping to hit him on his arm or side.
Game on.]
no subject
[ Central City never got really heavy snowfalls, like some places further north, but it always seemed to happen a handful of times per season. He remembers from their talks that Jakku was a desert planet, and seeing Rey's joy over the snow is honestly about as delightful as anything.
Cisco worries for a moment, as she stares at him in confusion, that he had made a mistake trying to get her into a snowball fight. But then she is smiling and tossing a snowball at him, and he's too relieved and happy that she got it to dodge properly. At least, that's the excuse he tells himself as the snowball catches him right in the side, bursting into a puff of snow when it impacts. ]
Lucky shot.
[ And then he's bending low, scooping up more snow quickly into another snowball that he throws at Rey, a little more accurately this time, though not very fast. ]
no subject
[That was amazing to Rey, considering the climate he lived in. In this moment she couldn't imagine anything wrong with snow falling a few times throughout a year. She simply imagined having a good time in the snow and playing around with it. Perhaps, she was making up for lost time. As a child she didn't get to play very much. She had a doll she made out of scrap cloth and twine, day dreaming about flying x-wing ships and being part of the Rebellion. Now, she could actually enjoy herself...just for a little bit.
To see the snow make contact with Cisco was perfect. Maybe a lucky shot, or maybe she had good aim.]
Maybe, or maybe you have poor aim.
[She's smiling at him, watching him scoop up more snow and does the same. She doesn't get a lot this time, only enough to fit in the palms of her hands before she's up. Rey looks up, about ready to move but the snowball does make contact with her shoulder. A cold chill runs up her spine, as does excitement.]
You're going to regret that. [More teasing, as she throws another snowball at him. Rey doesn't aim at any specific body part, only at her friend.]
no subject
[ Cisco grins mischievously, even wags his eyebrows a bit in challenge. It is fun, to play like this. Nice to see Rey smiling and laughing; to run around and make noise and not worry for a while.
Cisco tries to dodge her volley, and he does, partly. It still catches him, just barely, in the ear, sending bits of ice and snow falling down the neck of his shirt, which is very cold and unpleasant. Cisco pauses to get that lingering snow out of his scarf and collar, giving Rey a chance to prepare another snowball quicker than he could.
Her next snowball catches him in the stomach, but his puffy jacket is padded enough that he barely feels it before throwing a snowball in her direction, with a boisterous: ]
Take that!
no subject
[Rey is actually giggling and smiling, more so than she's done before. It doesn't matter who wins in this 'snowball fight' as long as they have fun. Though, she has to say, with her lack of layers and mittens, it's easier for her to gather the snow and turn it into a ball.
She seems to have pretty darn good aim from how many times she's hit him already.]
Ah! [The snowball from him comes in faster this time, and Rey doesn't dodge it. It hits the side of her arm, sending another cold chill down her spine, but she's very quick to return the favor and throw more snow at him.]
no subject
Hold up- hold up! Are you... do you not have gloves on?
[ He comes trotting over to Rey, then, heedless of the advantage he might be giving her if she chooses to throw one last snowball his direction. His brow is growing furrowed with worry as he gets closer and sees that, yes, she is definitely not wearing gloves and her hands are definitely bright red from the cold. ]
Come on, let's get inside, my cabin's that one right there.
[ He gestures to the closest of the little cabins. ]
no subject
When Cisco asked her to stop, she did, not bothering to throw anything else at him.]
No? I don't... [Which was a silly move on her part, considering she didn't even have a jacket, but her hands were red. She still had feeling in them, but the ice...it wasn't so bad.]
I think if I just have something warm, I'll be fine. [Really, there was nothing to concern himself with--and they were going to his cabin regardless.]
Like I said, I'll be fine. Nothing to worry about.
no subject
It is something to worry about.
[ Something's gone a touch tight in his voice. He opens the door and ushers her inside, leading her over to the small sink in the kitchen. The cabin is cozy, the light inside orange and warm and flickering from the fire. Cisco tugs off his mittens and turns on the water, testing the temperature. He starts it off cool, then gestures for Rey to put her hands under the flow. They don't look too bad, but that doesn't mean he can get careless. ]
Have you heard of frostbite? You can hurt yourself really badly, if you're not careful-
[ Very gradually, he adjusts the temperature of the water, a little warmer. He'd seen how this worked, had read far too many websites about it, after what had happened to Dante...
Cisco realizes that he is gnawing at his lip, anxiety all too easy to read. He knows he should explain, that he owes Rey that (even if he is right). ]
My brother- he got hurt really badly.
[ It's only a partial explanation, but it's a start. ]
no subject
The brunette goes with Cisco into his cabin, it's cozy and warm. The fire is a great relief to her skin, but instead of moving towards it, she's following him to the sink. Her eyes blink detecting the tightness in his voice.]
...I'm fine, Cisco. [It wasn't her intention to make him worry. She thought a few minutes in the snow wouldn't do any damage to her hands.]
No, I haven't heard of it.. [Not of frostbite, but she does do as he wants, placing her hands under the water, almost hissing from the change in temperature. Her hands are red, but there wasn't any sign of frostbite. Little by little the water gets warmer, and she feels guilty for making her friend worry.]
I'm sorry. [Her voice is softer then, apologizing for making him worry and for what happened to his brother.] I'll be careful, promise. [Rey flexes her fingers under the warmer water. It's much better than the cold, that's for sure, though the rest of her body wants to warm up by the fire....
But until Cisco tells her it's okay, she'll stay at the sink with her hands under the faucet.]
no subject
[ Cisco keeps adjusting the temperature of the water by slow increments, from cool to warm to just below hot, looking down at Rey's hands, watching closely for any signs of damage. It also helps him to avoid her gaze, which he can feel on him - the guilt and concern of it. The fear seeps out of him, and by the time he shuts off the water, he feels a bit silly for having reacted as strongly as he did. He pulls down a towel and dries off Rey's hands.
When he makes himself look up finally, he smiles, but it's small, sadder around the edges than he realizes. ]
Naw, don't apologize. I'm just sort of, uh, paranoid about it.
[ Moreso than he had realized, apparently. He nods his head towards the fire, where there are two rocking chairs piled with blankets. Cisco doesn't join her there right away, though. Instead, he goes to a coat that is hanging from a hook by the door, digging into its pockets. He pulls from them a pair of knitted gloves. They are nothing all that special: they are plain black and unadorned, but they're warm. Cisco comes over to Rey and holds them out towards her, simply. ]
They're spares. You should have them.
no subject
She stays where she is, feeling the water gradually get warmer. He doesn't look at her, making her wonder if she had accidentally made him upset with her lack of appropriate clothing. Rey didn't think it was too big of a deal. She wasn't planning on staying outside for too long, but he probably had a reason. Besides...it showed he cared.
The smile doesn't really reach his eyes. It was sadder than anything else. She starts to dry her hands with the offered towel.]
You have a reason for it, and I should've looked into what the appropriate clothing would be rather than go straight into the snow.
[Her gaze goes to the chairs with the blankets on them. Cisco moves away from her, leaving her to finish drying her hands. She folds the small towel and places it on the counter. Rey moves more towards the fire to warm up first. No need to take out the blankets if she could just enjoy the warmth of the fire itself.
The sudden offer of gloves makes her blink. She wasn't expecting that.]
No, I couldn't, Cisco. I'll be fine. I can get gloves, it's okay. [He might need them! They're spares for a reason.]
no subject
[ Cisco settles into the chair next to hers; he reaches himself a blanket, draping it around his shoulders and sighing, rocking the chair a little, trying to dispel the last traces of unhappiness. ]
Seriously, it's fine, take 'em. I insist.
[ He knows that Rey has a difficult time with generosity, sometimes, but he also knows that if she doesn't, he's going to worry about her. For his own peace of mind, he'd rather she take those gloves than leave them sitting around in case he ever forgets his mittens. ]
That way, once we've warmed up a little bit, we can go back out there and build a snowman together. Okay?
[ Cisco's just assuming that, if Rey's never had a snowball fight, she's probably never built a snowman, either, and that seems like an important item to tick off the list. ]
no subject
And he was going to back down to her, insisting the keep the gloves. She won't argue with him, or push back. Instead there's a nod of her head, moving to take on of the blankets to drape over her shoulders and slowly slide into the rocking chair... odd, very odd, but she wasn't about to complain.]
Thank you.
[Wait a moment, a man made out of snow?]
..Why would you want to build a snowman? [Were they going to summon him or...was it just for fun?]
no subject
[ And with that, the last echoes of worry are chased away and Cisco is back to his usual self, smiling and radiant. The fire is crackling away pleasantly, and he's feeling cozy, excited by the prospect of getting to share something new with a friend. He wondered if they had any carrots handy... he might have to run to the nearest store to get one, and some coal to boot. ]
It's really easy, trust me. You can get all elaborate with it, but we can just make a classic one.
[ Then, because he can't honestly resist, Cisco leans closer to Rey, sings a little snippet of a song in a coaxing tone: ]
Do you wanna build a snowman?
[ He knows she likely won't get the reference, but he can't help himself. ]
no subject
[Really, an honest question because she hasn't a clue. It wasn't like she played around in the sand on Jakku. Or did anything fun, except play with a doll she made from old rags. But that was so long ago.
And more answers gives way to more questions and just...why would you want to make it elaborate? Again, were they about to do magic? Summon a man literally made of snow? Or was she really over thinking everything at this point?]
....I don't know? [Does she? And he does have a nice voice. Perfect for carry a tune. Rey starts to smile, trying to wrap her mind around such a simple concept.]
If you want to build a snowman, we can. What exactly do we do? Just gather snow and pile it on?
[...and if they could make a snowman, maybe they could make a snow droid.]
no subject
I don't know? It's just... fun to make stuff, I guess? To take a bunch of snow and build it into this kinda human shaped thing.
[ He considers cutting their little fireside interlude short and just rushing outside to start the snowman right now, rather than explaining. But Rey will probably have a better time, he thinks, if she knows what she's doing in advance. That way Cisco won't end up just showing her what to do, but they can do it together, collaboratively. ]
You take a big ball of snow and roll it around on the ground, so more snow sticks to it and it gets bigger and bigger, until it's like, this big. [ And Cisco demonstrates, holding his arms out in a big circle in front of him. ] Then you do that again, but you make it a little smaller, and you stack that on top of the first ball. Then you do one more, even smaller, and stack that on top, and that's the head. Then you decorate it, you know, with branches sticking out of the sides like arms, and you put two eyes and something for a nose and a mouth. And then you put, like, a hat or a scarf or stuff like that, to accessorize. And boom! You've got yourself a snowman.
no subject
So then what happens after you've placed these objects on the snow? Does anything happen?
[Or was that just it? Not judging or anything, just wondering....but she is open to the idea. Though now, she's wondering how she could build a snow droid, maybe one that looks like BB-8. He was round over all, it wouldn't take much to decorate it, and draw the orange pattern on it...
See what you've done, Cisco? Got Rey thinking about how to build a figure out of snow that looks like her friend.]
no subject
[ Cisco laughs, not exactly sure what it was Rey was expecting. ]
It's not, like, a freaking snow golem. It's not gonna come to life and be our servant or whatever. It's just, like, a statue made outta snow. Though there is a silly kid's song in my world about a snowman that did come to life because of a magic hat. I can teach it to you, if you want. I gotta warn you, though, it'll probably get stuck in your head.
[ With that, he decides he has warmed up enough, and that he's eager to get started. He gets to his feet, motioning with his head towards the door. ]
You wanna give it a try? You should grab that coat on the hook and borrow it... don't worry, I'm not gonna give that one to you, too.
no subject
Okay, okay so they're not summoning a snow golem, or any other creature that could possibly do them or anyone harm. Just making sure!]
Wait, there's a myth [Yes, that's what she's calling it] that a magical hat can bring a snowman to life? That's really a myth in your world? [Trying not to laugh because it does sound so silly. But...maybe it was real? After all, she thought the Jedi were a myth and she was on her way to finding Luke Skywalker.
Rey gets up from her chair, making sure to put those gloves on.]
We can try it, but if we suddenly find a magical hat, and things happen...I'll looking to you for guidance on it. [Joking of course, and the offer of a coat makes her nod her head.] Okay good, I can buy my own coat, but do you think it's necessary? It shouldn't be cold for much longer.
no subject
[ He could tell her stories about things both far sillier and far stranger than a sentient snowman. In fact, Cisco makes a mental note to tell her some of those stories, later on. For now, though, he contents himself with simply saying: ]
Not sure it really counts as a myth. It's just a song that kids sing, you know? But I promise, I'll steer clear of old silk hats for our guy, magical or otherwise.
[ Rey's question about a coat surprises him a little, though maybe it shouldn't. It's not so much the fact that she clearly still thinks about things in terms of what is necessary for survival and what isn't, but the implied temporariness. Even if the cold were nearly over, there would be next year, and the year after. But of course, Rey doesn't intend on staying that long, probably. That's not exactly the most cheerful thought. ]
It's gonna be cold plenty longer. You really oughta have one.
[ Cisco heads out the door, towards a nearby undisturbed patch of snow. When he gets there he crouches down. He starts scooping it up, forming a large sphere that will eventually be the base of the snowman. ]
no subject
[Joking of course. Men of snow coming to life because of a magical hat. Not just any hat, but a silk hat. But it's just a children's song. Nothing more than that. Yet, behind every song or story, there had to be a bit of truth to it, right? Or maybe she was thinking too much on the subject.
But they could talk about that later. She doesn't argue with the necessity of the coat and simply puts it on. How much longer was he thinking? A few more weeks? Maybe a month?]
How long does snow fall usually last? I'm not going to put off getting one, but it can't be this cold for too long.
[She follows behind him, feeling much better in a coat and gloves. Okay they were needed, and it made it easier for her to have fun in the snow. Cisco already starts preparing the base of the snowman, leaving Rey to create a small snowball and then roll it up to be a smaller size of what Cisco's making. They'll have a base and a torso!]
no subject
[ Cisco keeps work, rolling the snow, talking to Rey as he does. The cold makes both of their breaths into clouds of steam, and Cisco can see Rey's cheeks and the tip of her nose get red from the chill, knows the same must be happening to him. But isn't going to freeze her fingers off at least. ]
Speaking of truly ridiculous myths, there's another one back home, about how long the winter will last. There's this kind of animal, called a groundhog. They're tiny little rodents that live underground, about this big. And on this one particular day every year, you're supposed to be able to tell if it will be an early spring or if the winter will last another month and a half, depending on whether or not the groundhog sees its shadow and gets spooked and goes back underground.
[ He has gotten the base large enough, now, and spends some time shaping it, trying to get it as perfectly spherical as possible. This involves some patting on ice to some areas, buffing off the pointy parts with his palm elsewhere. Honestly, the more Cisco says about the whole groundhog day thing, the weirder it sounds in retrospect. ]
no subject
Her nose is feeling a bit running form the cold weather, and her lips are chapped. She would have to be mindful of getting something to help with it. A balm or salve to keep her skin from cracking in such cold conditions...and to help prevent sickness.]
So...you leave your weather predictions to this...groundhog deity?
[Truly this is confusing to someone like Rey. Why would they let an animal decide how much longer winter was? And did it actually work? She moved over to him, patting down the snow she had gathered, trying to make it the same shape as his.]
Do you know, there's an actual planet called Hoth where it's nothing but ice and snow? The complete opposite of Jakku.
